Mamata Banerjee Takes Over TMC’s Birbhum Organisation

There’s an old saying about how the flap of a butterfly’s wing in one corner of the world can lead to a hurricane in another. This week’s events have shown precisely how these knock-on effects can be transmitted across the globe, with the closure of three relatively regional banks in the US leading to panic not just in the European banking sector, but also in Asian stock markets. The genesis of this world-wide banking contagion was the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last week, but there has been enough turmoil in the banking sector since even Monday to make the global banking sector our Newsmaker of the Week.First, a bit of recent history before we get to the week that has just elapsed. Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was a pretty integral part of the tech startup ecosystem in the US, since it not only lent to startups in need of funds for growth, but also held a large chunk of their deposits. When problems became visible in the bank last Wednesday due to a confluence of bad luck and poor financial planning, all the President’s horses and all the President’s men rushed to put Humpty Dumpty together again. Within a couple of days of the crisis breaking out, three different regulator institutions shut down the bank, secured its deposits, and promised depositors that they would have access to all of their deposits, not just the insured ones. Unlike the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty was put together again pretty quickly—to an extent. With the collapse of Silvergate Bank and Signature Bank that same week—and for pretty much the same reasons—deep cracks had been made in investors’ confidence in the banking sector. That’s what leads us to this week. US President Joe Biden kicked off the week on Monday with a speech where he emphasised that “no losses will be borne by the taxpayers” due to the SVB crisis. Instead, he said, the money will come from the fees that banks pay into a Deposit Insurance Fund, maintained by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Sounds good, but the jitters had hit and the US banking stocks were not going to be calmed so easily.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the BJP, which has only eight MLAs in the Delhi Assembly, is trying to topple the Arvind Kejriwal government by issuing threats to legislators under the guise of a no-confidence motion. Addressing a press conference here, the AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is offering two options to his party MLAs — they should either join the saffron party or the CBI-ED will put them in jail. The BJP is planning to bring a no-confidence motion against the Kejriwal government during the ongoing session of the Delhi Assembly.“The AAP has 62 MLAs with a thumping majority and the BJP has eight MLAs. But the BJP wants to topple the government by buying MLAs under the guise of a no-confidence motion, just like governments that fell from Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra.

They met only once: on Bradman’s 90th birthday. The documentary looks into this remarkable bond between the two men, who always admired each other and reveals both were as nervous as the other about the meeting.Bradman once said it was impossible to rate players of different eras.

India defeated Australia by five wickets in a low-scoring game at the Wankhede Stadium, with Rahul, who struggled to find form during the Border-Gavaskar series leading to him being dropped for the third and fourth Tests, scoring a patient unbeaten 75 as the hosts cantered home.Jadeja, playing ODI cricket after nearly eight months due to a knee injury and subsequent surgery, scored an unbeaten 45 in the chase of 188 on Friday. He also bowled a tight spell and returned figures of 2/46 to be declared ‘Player of the Match’. With the ODI World Cup being hosted by India later this year, an in-form Rahul and a fully-fit Jadeja will be an asset, and the threematch series will help the selectors assess the duo’s progress.India would look to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and also try to make amends with the bat, after they were in a spot of bother at 4/39, and later 5/83.
