It was an extremely tough and volatile week at the bourses. Markets were all over the place and the small net change at the end of the week, does not convey the overall movement or the sentiment that prevailed. Markets gained on two of the five sessions and lost on three. BSESENSEX lost 462.80 points or 0.80 per cent to close at 57,527.10 points while NIFTY lost 155 points or 0.91 per cent to close at 16,945.05 points. The broader indices saw BSE100, BSE200 and BSE500 lose 0.97 per cent, 0.93 per cent and 0.99 per cent respectively. BSEMIDCAP and BSESMALLCAP lost significantly more at 1.98 per cent and 1.48 per cent respectively. The Indian Rupee gained 7 paisa or 0.08 per cent to close at Rs 82.48 to the US Dollar. Dow Jones gained on four of the five trading sessions and lost only on the day FED raised interest rates. Dow Jones was up 375.55 points or 1.18 per cent to close at 32,237.53 points. The US FED raised interest rates by 25 basis points on expected lines. The rate band is now at 4.75 per cent – 5.00 per cent. This is the ninth consecutive rate hike since the FED began raising rates from March 22. Suffice to say that because of the high inflation, rates which were at 0-0.25 per cent one year ago, are now at 4.75 per cent -5.00 per cent. Further, Jerome Powell, post the announcement has not said or conveyed that there would be an immediate pause going forward. There may be further hikes and then a pause. Keep your fingers crossed. A point to be kept in mind is that 2/3rd of the Quantitative Tightening has been returned post the bank failure. After the two banks went down in the US followed by the Swiss bank Credit Suisse, it’s now the turn of the German Bank, Deutsche Bank. Shares of the bank have crashed and there is talk on the street that the German regulator would have to step in and ensure a bailout of sorts.

Jubilations erupted in the RJD camp on Monday as news spread that Tejashwi Yadav, the party’s de facto leader and the deputy chief minister of Bihar, has become a father. Yadav, who has stayed back in Delhi by the side of his wife Rajshree after an interrogation by the CBI last weekend, broke the news on his Twitter handle and also shared a picture of himself holding the baby girl. Yadav was on March 25 quizzed by the Central Bureau of Investigation for more than eight hours, while the Enforcement Directorate questioned his MP sister Misa Bharti for over six hours, in connection with the railways land-for-jobs scam case. In north India, which is largely patrilinear, most families have traditionally wished for sons to the extent that there have been cases of infanticides of baby girls. Indore stadium pitch rating changed from ‘poor’ to ‘below average’

Agency News : Indore

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has changed the pitch rating of Indore’s Holkar Stadium -- the venue for the third Test between India and Australia -- to ‘below average’ from ‘poor’ following a BCCI appeal. The ICC also gave the Narendra Modi Stadium pitch in Ahmedabad, the venue for the fourth Test, an ‘average’ rating for the slow batting deck where both teams had one completed innings each. The match had ended in a tame draw, with India winning the series 2-1. At Indore, Australia had defeated India by nine wickets inside three days of the Border-Gavaskar Test to secure a World Test Championship final berth. The ICC appeal panel reviewed the earlier decision of the match referee Chris Broad and found that there was not enough excessive variable bounce to warrant the ‘poor’ rating. The pitch, which had initially received three demerit points, will now get only one demerit point. “The footage from the Test was reviewed by an ICC appeal panel consisting of Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, and Roger Harper, ICC Men’s Cricket Committee Member. Both were of the opinion that, while the guidelines had been followed by the Match Referee in accordance with Appendix A of the Pitch Monitoring Process, there was not enough excessive variable bounce to warrant the ‘poor’ rating,” said an ICC statement on Monday. ”The panel, therefore, concluded that the pitch should be rated ‘below average’, meaning the Holkar Stadium will receive only one demerit.
