OUR CENTERS Center for Advanced Microelectronics Manufacturing Center for Autonomous Solar Power Center for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems Center for Heterogeneous Integration Research in Packaging Integrated Electronics Engineering Center NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage

S3IP is proud to be the research home of Nobel laureate M. Stanley Whittingham. A pioneer in the development of the lithium-ion battery, he serves as director of the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage.

UNITING ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY FLEXIBLE ELECTRONICS The Center for Advanced Microelectronics Manufacturing (CAMM) is the New York node of the manufacturing innovation institute for flexible hybrid electronics. The center develops technologies such as sensors and health devices with support from the Department of Defense and New York State. CAMM, a microelectronics R&D commercialization center, demonstrates the feasibility of roll-to-roll flexible electronics manufacturing. Its 10,000-square-foot facility boasts a panel line for process and product development and a roll-to-roll research line.

ADVANCED BATTERIES The NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage (NECCES) supports basic research in the design of the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, which requires the development of new chemistries and a fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical processes that occur in these complex systems. NECCES, led by Binghamton University with an international team of partner schools and labs, is an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the Department of Energy.

GREEN DATA CENTERS The Center for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems (ES2), a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, brings government, industry and academic partners together to develop systematic methodologies for efficiently operating electronic systems, including data centers. The focus is on controlling resources and managing workloads to achieve optimal energy consumption. The ES2 data center is a living lab where industry standards can be tested and developed.

ADVANCING ELECTRONICS R&D ENERGY HARVESTING The Center for Autonomous Solar Power (CASP) addresses scientific challenges to reduce the cost of solar power and enhance energy efficiency. The center, established in 2008, draws expertise from engineering, computer science, chemistry and physics to bridge the gap between technology and commercialization. CASP conducts research related to thin-film solar cells, supercapacitors, thermoelectric cells and reliability studies with an emphasis on Earth-abundant, low-toxicity materials.

ELECTRONICS PACKAGING The Integrated Electronics Engineering Center (IEEC), a New York State Center for Advanced Technology, performs leading-edge research in electronics packaging for the technological and economic benefit of its member companies. Capabilities include reliability analysis; mechanical/thermal analysis and testing; solder mechanics; failure mechanism determination; and micromechanical analysis and testing. The center, founded in 1991, also studies sensors and new materials for electronic systems.

HETEROGENEOUS INTEGRATION The Center for Heterogeneous Integration Research in Packaging (CHIRP) will help to define the future of electronics packaging for the next decade. Heterogeneous integration of many microchips into single packages will be essential to technology ranging from autonomous vehicles to the internet of things for at least the next decade. Faculty teams at Binghamton and Purdue University conduct research in global interconnects, efficient power delivery, system design, thermal management, novel materials, reliability and other topics.

UNIQUE LABORATORIES S3IP has a number of unique, multiuser laboratories available for academic and industrial use. The Analytical and Diagnostics Laboratory (ADL) offers state-of-the-art instrumentation for electron microscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray analysis, surface and interface analysis and more. The Nanofabrication Laboratory (NLAB) and the Center for Autonomous Solar Power (CASP) lab provide capability for atomic layer deposition to produce solar cells, thermoelectric devices, MEMS devices and supercapacitors. The Reliability and Failure Analysis Lab focuses on evaluating reliability of electronic packaging and determination of failure modes. The Smart Electronics Manufacturing Lab (SEML) offers an end-to-end Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly line for prototyping the manufacture and small-lot production of electronics assemblies. At the Center for Advanced Microelectronics Manufacturing (CAMM), vacuum photolithography is integrated with roll-to-roll material handlers for plastic and glass films. The Center for Energy-Smart Electronics Systems (ES2) runs a moderate-scale data center as a living laboratory for research. The NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Research (NECCES) boasts a Battery Dry Room that supports advanced battery research.

EDUCATION S3IP, a New York State Center of Excellence, is part of Binghamton University, the premier public university in the Northeast. Education and outreach are at the core of many S3IP initiatives.
