SIMULATED AND VISUALIZED the flow of water on such an organic roof through 3D models and diagrmas, and provide options of how to effectively drain water under different conditions. PROVIDED a set of drawings oncluding detailed plans, section studies, and elevations that showcase the design and functionality of the space. MADE physical models at various scales, to test spatial conditions and human interactions to evaluate how the idea would function in real-world conditions.

ARCHITECTURE: A ROCK When I gaze at a rock I become fascinated by its diversity and complexity. This may be due to the serendipity that occurs within the process of rock formation. Some rocks remind me of the shape of a face, and other ones remind me of a saw. There are rocks with huge holes, and others that are as enormous as a mountain. Rocks are solid structures that are also sculptural; they are landscapes that can shape a space with infinite variations. Is it possible to create architecture that is like a rock?

Thereafter, concrete is poured into the holes. As a result, a single rock-like concrete volume appears. Finally, as glass and doors are inserted between the formed concrete volumes, it becomes architecture. And that is all. The space that emerges is like a light and bright cave.

KAIT II CAFE IN KANAGAWA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLODY


KAIT II 2015

TYPE: CAFE (BUILT), JAPAN STAGE: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT ROLE:

ACCOMPLISHED a site visit with Ishigami and the team to observe real-world conditions and challenges, s well as gather documentation related to KAIT II. CONSTRUCTED physical models to explore how the design would appear in real-life scenarios. CREATED a set of drawings and studies design details to showcase the overl design concept and provide explanations on the construction process.


KAIT II CAFE IN KANAGAWA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLODY

KAIT II This semi-outdoor multi-purpose plaza is currently in planning within a university, adjacent to the ‘KAIT Workshop’. It is a one-story building measuring approximately 100 meters × 60 meters. Contrary to its expansive floor plan the ceiling height is about 2.3 meters, and is devoid of any columns. As opposed to its extensive space of almost unfathomable scale that spreads horizontally, the ceiling maintains a human scale like that of standard Japanese houses. Furthermore despite the sheer extent of this roof, its thickness is a mere 12 millimeters, and in respect establishes the building as a ‘super delicate mega-structure’. It is very delicate yet is very dynamic. X1

A series of skylights are opened within the huge steel roof, however no glass is installed in these openings. Therefore, light, wind and rain seeps through them into the interior space. Also, each opening will be equipped with cover flashing to capture the rainfall on the roof in order to prevent it from flowing into the interior. Only the rain that falls directly from the sky will enter the room, and will be absorbed by the improved soil on the ground. X1

SECTIONAL SOLUTION The structure of the roof comprises solely of a 12-millimeter thick large steel sheet that is only supported by four exterior walls. As the building’s foundation is designed exclusively underneath the surrounding walls, there is no structure at all on the interior floor. RAIN SOLUTION The main roof retains most of the rainfall, which is gathered at the one opening. From this opening, the water pours into the space like a waterfall. On a sunny day, a pleasant light shines through the windows, and creates rectangular shaped sunny spots on the floor. On a cloudy day, the rectangles will disappeared due to the diffusion of light. The density of the openings creates a space where light areas and dark areas are in a state of gradual transition . On a rainy day the water droplets that enter through the openings, allow numerous volumes to emerge like a cubed-shower. One can simultaneously witness patches of rainy scenes and a single, beautiful waterfall.

INDEPENDENT RESEARCH/WORKS Utilizing ArcGIS, Rhinoceros 3D modeling tools, and the Adobe Suite visualization software, I employed Python programming as the predominant language to establish interoperability across diverse software platforms. Complementing these efforts, I leveraged Grasshopper, a scripting tool within the realm of 3D software, to craft a bespoke visual language that effectively communicates my research focus and scholarly pursuits in the domains of data visualization, mapping, and disaster study. Noteworthy undertakings encompassed the assessment of oil palm suitability in Myanmar, comprehensive analysis of flood issue in Manila, and visual representation showcasing moon phases in Hong Kong.
