2 SUNY Erie Annual Report 2018-2019
A Message from President Hocoy At SUNY Erie, we pride ourselves on providing a diverse range of educational courses and programs in an inclusive and flexible environment. We strive to ensure our programs and faculty continuously reflect SUNY Erie’s mission to serve students to the best of our ability. The 2018-2019 year marked pivotal change with the re-evaluation of SUNY Erie’s infrastructure, services and educational programs to improve the student experience. As we focused on implementing these changes, we simultaneously developed a set of values that would guide administrators, faculty and staff through the process, keeping our focus studentcentered. The SUNY Erie CARES values are:
Compassion: We are sensitive to the needs of those we serve
Accountability: We always strive to do the right thing
Racial Equity: We respect and value every student and colleague regardless of any differences in background, experience and opinion
Excellence: We demonstrate the highest level of performance in all that we do
Students First: We value and respect our students’ voices
We hold these values close to our work as we usher in a new era at SUNY Erie. We continue to experience the external challenges most community colleges face today in the pursuit of accessible and customizable education. The constant source of strength continues to be our dedicated students, generous donors, supportive community leaders and passionate employees. The greater Western New York region will continue to progress with the option of affordable education. As the 2018-2019 year closes, an opportunity opens with a shared future and common vision. Thank You,
Dan Hocoy, Ph.D.

Chairman Lenihan’s Message As SUNY Erie closes its 2018-2019 year, we reflect on our performance across multiple functional areas of the college. Fiscally, we are proud to announce SUNY Erie will hold the line in tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year, maintaining accessible education for our community members. Our athletic teams and coaches are shining across the board in scholarship and talent, including our Men’s Basketball Team who took home the NJCAA Region 3 Championship for the second consecutive year in 2019 and finished the year with a 27-6 record. Overall, the 2018-2019 year marks a new era at SUNY Erie of efficiency and innovation in higher education. The Board of Trustees recognizes the individual contributions of leadership that propelled SUNY Erie’s successes. We applaud President Dan Hocoy, who continues to promote effective operations and relationships, both internally and externally. Some examples include the steps we have taken to make online education available and incorporate Workday, an business management system that is bringing SUNY Erie into the cutting edge of business processes. Additionally, this year we welcomed our new Provost, Doug Scheidt, who is currently heading SUNY Erie’s re-design of academic organization. He will implement new infrastructures that will provide students with increased access to services and advisement. We value our relationships involving shared governance, specifically with SUNY Erie’s Faculty Senate, chaired by Assistant Professor Colleen Quinn. We acknowledge the successes of SUNY Erie strongly correlate with the hard work and passion of its employees.
It is an honor to serve as Chairperson to an excellent Board of Trustees, whose main mission is twofold: to ensure SUNY Erie is maintaining an environment that promotes both student centeredness and fiscal stability.
As we move into the next academic year, we rely on our strong relationships with stakeholders, local government and educational collaborators. With the continued passion and dedication of faculty and staff, SUNY Erie will continue to be an excellent, affordable choice for educating our local citizens to prepare them for the workforce or future academic pursuits. Thank You,
Leonard Lenihan

Dear Friends of SUNY Erie, Over the past year, we have witnessed the continued renaissance of the City of Buffalo and the County of Erie. This economic and cultural upswing is something that many native Western New Yorker’s, including myself, have waited for our entire lives; and it is exciting to be a part of a community experiencing such a resurgence. The revitalization is wonderful for our region, but the cost of housing, childcare, healthcare and education - that impact our overall standard of living continues to rise - with access to the middle class becoming increasingly expensive and elusive for the disadvantaged. As chair of the SUNY Erie CC Foundation I have the pleasure of working with the college to identify and interview worthy applicants through the Foundation’s Scholarship Program. It is one of the true pleasures of volunteering for my alma mater- and to hear the incredible stories of our students and the things that they have had to overcome in their personal lives is inspiring. And that is where the importance of SUNY Erie and supporters like you intersect – your generosity gives our students a chance of advancing themselves and participating in our region’s upswing without carrying the heavy debt burden we hear is all too common today. As the economic re-emergence of the Niagara Frontier continues, the opportunities SUNY Erie provides for our students to participate in the workforce grows proportionately. Over just the past year alone, the SUNY Erie CC Foundation provided nearly $307,000 in scholarships to help students achieve their dreams of participating meaningfully in our community. In closing, even after a few years of involvement with the college as a volunteer I continue to be amazed by the community of donors like you who are a catalyst in helping change lives. Thank you for your continued dedication to SUNY Erie students and by extension the community at large. Sincerely,
Mark Gaulin ‘79

FIRST DOWN TO Scoring a Giving Relationship
The year was 1992, County Executive Dennis Gorski, joined Buffalo Bills All-Pro running back Thurman Thomas and ECC President Louis Ricci in the Atrium of City Campus to announce the “Thurman Thomas Distinguished Scholarship Award;” designed to help deserving City of Buffalo residents break free from the cycle of poverty through education.
the Western New York Community with programs in emerging fields like nanotechnology and social media marketing and the humble running back from Houston, Texas is now enshrined in the National Football League Hall of Fame, is the President of 34 Group, a Telecommunications, Construction and A&E company and started his own foundation, the Thurman Thomas Family Foundation. But some things have remained constant for both – for the college – it’s the mission of providing an open access education to anyone who seeks it – and for Thurman – its taking his responsibility as a role model very seriously on behalf of those kids who need help lifting themselves up from disadvantaged circumstances.
Speaking at the press conference announcing his scholarship, the then 3rd year running back Thomas stated, “Bills fans and the people of Buffalo have been so good to me that I really wanted to give something back to the community. I feel the greatest gift of all is the gift of education…” Thurman pledged his own personal resources to start the $25,000 endowed scholarship with Erie Community College – an institution to which he had no President Dan Hocoy with Patti and Thurman previous relationship. Thomas at the scholarship announcement. Nearly two decades have passed and a lot has changed for both the college and Thurman since that momentous day. The college, now known as SUNY Erie, continues to fill the evolving workforce needs of 12 SUNY Erie Annual Report 2018-2019
Through the years - the relationship has continued to grow, with Thurman serving a stint on the SUNY Erie CC Foundation Board of Directors, where he also acted as Honorary Chair of the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. Thurman’s company 34 Group became SUNY Erie’s first START-UP NY sponsored company, prompting the company to move its headquarters from Atlanta, Georgia to Buffalo.
TOUCHDOWN And the relationship didn’t stop there, in 2018 the college and Thurman teamed up to present the SUNY Erie Kats – Thurman Thomas Youth Football Camp which attracted over 300 youth football players from 3 football organizations primary from the City of Buffalo over two days. This year, the camp was expanded to three days and was made free thanks to the generous donations solicited in partnership by the college and the Thurman Thomas Family Foundation. The camp attracted 600 youth football players from 7 organizations. In November and December 2018, the relationship came full circle as Thurman and Patti Thomas joined President Hocoy to announce a new scholarship, funded by the Thurman Thomas Family Foundation for students who completed their first year of college against all odds. Thurman’s Foundation pledged to take the financial burden away from the students so they can concentrate on their studies. The new scholarship provides full tuition, fees, books and related costs for up to three disadvantaged second year students: equating to approximately $5,0006,000 per award! This scholarship was in part funded through another collaborative effort as SUNY Erie hosted the Thurman Thomas Family Foundation 2nd annual ‘Holidaze’ fundraiser, both events occurred
in the Atrium of the Old Post Office where Thurman announced his initial scholarship all those years ago. The fundraiser was designed in the spirit of the relationship between the college, Thurman and now his family- to bring like-minded individuals together to raise funds to support local under resourced youth with the gift of education. “We are honored that the Thurman Thomas Family Foundation has chosen to work with SUNY Erie to provide scholarships to students who might not otherwise have the resources to finish their education with us,” President Hocoy said. “SUNY Erie’s commitment to student success is in the forefront of our goals as a College, and the generosity shown by Thurman and Patti will help us to further our mission.” According to Thurman, the goal of the scholarship is to allow students to “focus on their studies and move toward completing their degree without the financial burden of paying tuition. We really hope to make a difference in the lives of students who are struggling to make ends meet, so they can focus on fulfilling their dream of attaining a college degree without the worry of how they are going to pay their tuition,” he said. Three Occupational Therapy Assistants present at National Conference
The SUNY Erie Foundation proudly supported three recent graduates in presenting at the annual National Occupational Therapy Association Conference in New Orleans this Spring. SUNY Erie was honored to be the only community college in the country to have new graduates as presenters at the conference.
Hannah Renaldo
Occupational Therapy Assistant ‘18 “The OTA program at SUNY Erie provided me with an in-depth understanding of occupational therapy through rigorous course loads, experienced professors and a variety of educational techniques, with a client-centered focus. SUNY Erie’s initiative to create a collaborative relationship with People Inc. allowed my peers and I to develop a unique skill set, and to elevate OT’s role in a community-based setting.”
Tiffany Williams
Occupational Therapy Assistant ‘18 “I have always had a passion to pursue a career helping others. At SUNY Erie, I discovered how to fulfill that dream. Through the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, I have learned more than I could have ever hoped for. The hands-on experience in the field has truly prepared me for my future. Completing my fieldwork at People Inc.’s Young Adult Life Transition program led myself and two fellow classmates to submit a presentation proposal to the 2019 American Occupational Therapy Association. Presenting in New Orleans allowed us to promote the importance and value of the field of OTA and programs like SUNY Erie’s.”
Kristin Skoney
Occupational Therapy Assistant ‘18 “I wanted to find a career path involving helping others on a day to day basis. I was later introduced to the field of occupational therapy when my mother underwent surgery. I did my research and discovered that SUNY Erie’s program was the right fit for me. I started the occupational therapy program at SUNY Erie in 2016. The professors engaged us in hands-on activities that enhanced my understanding of the job and the skills I needed to excel in this profession. My fieldwork placement at People Inc. really expanded my idea of what occupational therapy can do for this emerging practice area. I couldn’t be happier with the career path I chose and deciding to carry out my education at SUNY Erie. In April 2019, my fellow classmates and I presented in the AOTA National Conference in New Orleans.” SUNY Erie Annual Report 2018-2019

Training the next generation of STEM Leaders The process from concept to completion took more than eight years, but the long awaited Center for STEM Studies at SUNY Erie’s North Campus is now in its second year of operation. This project, with support from state and county officials, including County Executive Mark Poloncarz, provides approximately 57,000 square feet of new facility space for labs, prep rooms and support spaces for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Science programs. With more than half of SUNY Erie’s programs leading to an associate degree in STEM fields, this state-of-theart facility supports training for a variety of growing WNY employment fields. SUNY Erie President Dr. Dan Hocoy has stressed the importance of progress at the College as a way to impart a renewed vision of SUNY Erie to the community. “The Center for STEM Studies is a symbol of the overall culture change at SUNY Erie,” President Hocoy said. “SUNY Erie is continuously evolving as a College that connects with students and is dedicated to increasing student success, while training the future workforce of the region. This STEM facility supports that new vision.” The SUNY Erie Foundation hosted the STEM Business Showcase in November to provide local business leaders the opportunity learn first-hand about the College’s plans for the future. A keynote presentation featuring President Dan Hocoy, College Board Chairman Len Lenihan and Foundation Board Chairman Mark Gaulin, along with student demonstrations, were part of the evening.
