n 2001 at the 50 year reunion, the Class of 1951 made a commitment to create an endowed scholarship to benefit ESF students. While the minimum amount for an endowed scholarship was $10,000, we set our sights a little higher and set a goal of raising $100,000 in five years. At our 55th reunion in 2006, we presented a check to ESF President Neil Murphy in the amount of $109,000! In 2004, the Class of 1951 Scholarship Selection Committee awarded $500 to six students. Through continued contributions and investment returns over the last 12 years, we have been able to award over $62,000 to 83 students with the individual scholarship amount growing to $1,600 each in 2016.

Members of the Class still continue to give to the scholarship fund and in just the last year alone, donated an additional $15,000, bringing the total endowment value to a staggering $234,583.32. As Vice President of the Class of 1951, I wanted to take this moment to thank all of you for your generous contributions, both past and future. The goal of the scholarship was to ease the financial burden for students who demonstrated financial need, academic merit and strength of character. After reading the following notes from some of the Class of 1951 Scholarship recipients, I think you will all agree that our donations clearly made a difference in the lives of these outstanding students.

In 2006, College President Dr. Neil Murphy presented a plaque to representatives from the Class of 1951 in recognition of their class gift.
This scholarship allowed me to enjoy my final year at ESF by relieving some of that financial stress, and because of that, I am forever grateful.
Thomas Decker Class of 2015 . Fort Collins, CO Scholarship recipient in 2013
“A huge thank you to the Class of 1951 for awarding me a scholarship that helped in financing my senior year of college. Being an out-of-state student that pays for school on my own, funds were tight when it came down to paying for my last two semesters. This scholarship allowed me to enjoy my final year at ESF by relieving some of that financial stress, and because of that, I am forever grateful. Cheers to the Class of 1951!”

“I want to thank the Class of 1951 for the scholarship. The funds have impacted my current career in a very positive way. I have been able to limit my loans to an extremely low amount while still having enough to cover books and other necessities. I greatly appreciate it!”
Class of 2013 & 2016 . Syracuse, NY Scholarship recipient in 2012 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES ENGINEERING B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY M.S. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
I look forward to giving back to future generations of ESF students as I progress in my career! “As someone that relied on scholarships, student loans, and sometimes three or four jobs at a time to be able to go to college at such a wonderful school as ESF, it meant the world to me to be awarded the Class of 1951 Scholarship as an undergraduate. After receiving two bachelor’s degrees in 2013, I went on to graduate school at ESF, recently receiving a master’s degree in May 2016. I am now starting a Ph.D. program in Soil and Crop Sciences at Cornell University, fully-funded due to the excellent education and many opportunities that ESF provided me. I look forward to giving back to future generations of ESF students as I progress in my career!” 3
Timothy Callahan Class of 2014 . Massapequa, NY Scholarship recipient in 2012 B.S. CONSERVATION BIOLOGY M.S. ECOLOGY AND ECOSYSTEMS
With your help, my college education was made possible and opened up many doors for me to pursue my passions!
Theresa Evans Class of 2009 . Syracuse, NY Scholarship recipient in 2007 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
“Thank you Class of 1951! After I was awarded the scholarship in 2012, I went on to finish my undergraduate degree in three years, then went on to work on my graduate degree at ESF. During my five years at ESF, I loved studying, working and running in the ESF community. ESF has taught me so much in the scientific field, but also in life in general. I now serve with Baptist Campus Ministry at Syracuse University and working here allows me to maintain the great relationships I formed at ESF. With your help, my college education was made possible and opened up many doors for me to pursue my passions! Thank you!”
“I am sincerely honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Class of 1951 scholarship. Thank you for your generosity, which helped to lighten my financial burden and allow me to focus more on the importance of what I was learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous gift. I wouldn’t be thriving in the local community today if it wasn’t for your support! Thank you!” 4

“The Class of 1951 Scholarship was an incredible help in funding my academics at ESF. As the daughter of an alumnus, the rich history of ESF was what drew me to the school in the first place. Soon after I arrived on campus, I was receiving financial help in the form of a scholarship from the Class of 1951. This was a lovely reminder of the family I joined when I started my journey at ESF. Today the people I’ve met and the things I learned at ESF have brought me to Europe, where I am responsible for the environmental sustainability of the American military training areas in Germany. Without the Class of 1951’s help and ‘you can do it!’ attitude, I would not be here. Thank you Class of 1951!”
“The scholarship made it possible for me to attend the Ranger School! Thank you so much for giving thought to us on our journey to finish school!”

Because of this award, I have been able to focus more time and energy on campus service.
“I am extremely grateful to the Class of 1951 for supporting this scholarship program! Receiving this award was very beneficial to me as I completed my studies at ESF.”
“My experience at ESF is like no other. I absolutely love this school, much like you do. Because of this award, I have been able to focus more time and energy on campus service as VP and President of our Undergraduate Student Association last year and this coming year. You have absolutely blessed me and I will continue to study hard, work hard, and strive for an ESF that reaches the world and changes the way we think about the natural environment. I truly thank you.”
Kirsten Scherrer Class of 2017 . Niagara Falls, NY Scholarship recipient in 2015 & 2016 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES ENGINEERING
“Thank you so much to the Class of 1951 for this scholarship! This scholarship has been a huge help in paying for tuition and other costs of college and living off-campus. During the Fall 2015 semester, I had health issues and was unable to work as much as I had been due to frequent trips between Syracuse and home for medical appointments and surgery. Thanks to this scholarship, I was able to keep up with rent and other bills. This saved me a lot of stress during an already difficult time, and helped me focus on keeping up with my engineering classes. Thank you Class of 1951!”

“I feel so blessed to have received this scholarship. It really goes to show you how giving people are in the real world. I honestly hope that one day I become fortunate enough to be able to donate funds back—enabling another student to achieve their dreams. Thank you again and I hope you all have a wonderful day! You all sure have made mine!”

Thank you all for helping me accomplish my goals and supporting me in my journey. “Thank you very much for providing me with funds from the Class of 1951 Scholarship to help support my degree in Chemistry. I am very grateful that my student loans were not a terribly large financial burden for me, thanks to the assistance from scholarships like this one which helped pay for my education. I am happy to say that I paid off my student loans in full earlier this year. I am currently working as a Technical Applications Scientist II for Thermo Fisher Scientific in Carlsbad, CA, after completing my Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii in May 2015. I will forever cherish the numerous memories made during my time at ESF and thank you all for helping me accomplish my goals and supporting me in my journey.”
Lauren Gibbs Class of 2013 . Syracuse, NY Scholarship recipient in 2009 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
I can’t thank you enough for working to support this initiative, for myself, and others before and after me. “In the world of higher education today, paying for your own schooling is extremely challenging, to say the least. I went to school full-time and also worked full-time, and it was never easy. Receiving assistance like this scholarship helped relieve some of that burden. I will be forever grateful to those people who took the time to review my scholarship application and consider me a valid recipient. The scholarship helped more than I can say, honestly. I can’t thank you enough for working to support this initiative, for myself, and others before and after me. The monetary support, and also just the encouragement gained from receiving this scholarship, is something that I will truly never forget.”
Connor Terry Class of 2018 . Weedsport, NY Scholarship recipient in 2016 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES ENGINEERING
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this very generous award. This scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to continue my schooling fulltime as opposed to working more in order to pay for it. Because of this award, I can continue working part-time while taking more classes, meaning that I am on track to graduate between one and two semesters earlier than planned. Your generosity has greatly impacted my life, and I will always remember that.” 8
Jacob Gaskill Class of 2014 . Brockport, NY Scholarship recipient in 2012 B.S. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Your generosity played a big part in allowing me to maintain a GPA that was competitive for graduate schools. “Thank you so much for making this scholarship available! It allowed me to spend considerably less time working that year and more time focusing on academics. The courses I took during my junior year (the year I was awarded the scholarship) were especially difficult, so it is not an overstatement to say that your generosity played a big part in allowing me to maintain a GPA that was competitive for graduate schools. Thank you so much!”
Mikayla Warren Class of 2017 . Chaumont, NY Scholarship recipient in 2016 B.S. WILDLIFE SCIENCE
I hope to someday be able to help a student in much the same way that you have helped me in my journey. “I cannot express my gratitude enough to the Class of 1951 for choosing to support me in my academic journey here at ESF. As most people know, it is virtually impossible to attend school full-time while also working full-time, so income is generally limited for a student. This kind of support means the world to me and has allowed me to continue at ESF into my senior year with less financial stress. Thank you again to the Class of 1951. I hope to someday be able to help a student in much the same way that you have helped me in my journey.”
