Bachelor of Science
Applied Mathematics
SUNY Polytechnic Institute
SUNY Polytechnic Institute, New York’s premier public polytechnic, provides an innovative and affordable higher education for students interested in science, engineering, technology, business, healthcare, and other liberal arts offerings for a well-rounded approach to experiential learning. Our commitment to a hands-on education situates students with both the academic structure customary of undergraduate study and unique opportunities for training and cutting-edge research, ultimately providing learners an unmatched education targeted for success in our fast-changing world. SUNY Poly students enjoy public school tuition with benefits that many small, private institutions boast, including small class sizes, individualized learning experiences, and a tight-knit community.
The Program
SUNY Poly’s Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics allows you to apply your mathematical and problem-solving skills to real world problems. The field of applied mathematics develops and uses a wide variety of mathematical methods in order to understand and to work with systems encountered in science and industry. As an applied mathematician, you might simulate the behavior of complex systems without actually having to construct expensive physical models.
People with rigorous training in applied mathematics are needed in industrial, corporate, and academic settings. Our graduates acquire the necessary mathematical skills to help meet this demand and have achieved outstanding careers doing what they love to do.
Depending upon your future goals, you may structure your coursework with an emphasis on preparing for graduate school or for more immediate employment.
Choosing Your Focus
If you are considering graduate study in mathematics or a related field, SUNY Polytechnic Institute can help you develop a strong background in some of the more rigorous and abstract aspects of mathematics, such as:
• Algebra and analysis
• Computational mathematics
• Mathematical physics
• Probability and decision theory
If you are looking to enter the workforce, you can develop a rich background in areas especially suitable to industry such as:
• Computational mathematics and scientific computing
• Data analysis and cognitive computing
• Mathematical finance and analytics
• Mathematical modeling
Individual Study + Faculty Research
Students may also work individually with faculty members to pursue special interests in class projects or outside of formal coursework. The faculty conduct research in areas including mathematical physics, computational mathematical modeling, and data science. Moreover, some faculty have external partnerships with industry in the Mohawk Valley and in New York State in areas such as data analysis and financial mathematics.
Internships
Students are also encouraged to receive academic credit through our Applied Mathematics internship. This provides interested students with the opportunity to work with local companies, putting their mathematics skills to work in applied settings.
Career Opportunities
Many of our graduates pursue careers in business, industry, government, and academia. They find employment as diverse as:
• Teaching mathematics at the high school or college level
• Industrial or computational mathematician or engineer
• Data analyst, financial analyst, or actuary
• Software engineer or cryptographer
• Quality or reliability analyst
