of discovery and collaboration. This environment is maintained in a challenging climate for higher education, a testament to our careful planning and management of constrained state resources and to the strength and endurance of the New Paltz vision.

W E MAINTAIN EXCELLENCE in the face of ever-constrained public funding. We manage budgets and other resources carefully, keeping a sharp focus on our core mission and the priorities of our strategic plan. “Frills” are difficult to find on the New Paltz campus. New York State support of the College’s instructional budget has dropped to 24% from 50% a decade ago. The New Paltz advantages of affordability and value open the door to higher education and provide upward mobility for many first-generation, academically capable students. Nonetheless, financial challenges prevent some well-qualified prospective students from attending. By supporting access and quality, your philanthropic investment has timeless returns for individual students, for SUNY New Paltz, and for the future of society.

CLASS OF 2014: PREPARED, EAGER & COMMITTED

SCHOLARSHIPS

Like many students across the country, the future success of many New Paltz graduates is tethered to the reality of student loan debt. Through scholarship support we help these students realize their full potential, freeing them to follow the current of their dreams and positioning them to contribute to society and to their communities. We invest not only in a student or in SUNY New Paltz, but in a generation working toward a better future.

A SHARED OPPORTUNITY... to provide a student’s education and shape a workforce.

THE REALITY OF DEBT

62% carried student loans averaging $24,857. This debt level is well below the national average, as is the loan-repayment default rate of our students.

THE REALITY OF CURRENT SUPPORT

$275,000 Combined Scholarship Dollars Thanks to philanthropy, New Paltz now has over 70 endowed scholarship funds. But this is for about 6,500 undergraduate students, and the cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, room and board reaches nearly $18,000 for in-state students residing on campus. Your scholarship dollars directly impact the lives of students and our society.

SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT SPECIFIC DISCIPLINES AND AREAS OF STUDY.

M AIN AREAS OF HIGH-IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP INCLUDE: HONORS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP-INTERSHIPS UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN STEM

HONORS PROGRAM

Recruitment scholarships allow us to attract the best and brightest young people and to provide steady support throughout a student’s education. Some donors establish scholarships to support students in specific disciplines and areas of study.

For 160 high-performing students whose future capabilities are enriched by intense engagement with other students and professors in creative study that spans disciplinary boundaries, the Honors Program is an intellectual haven. Honors students take small, integrative seminars, engage in community service, produce a senior thesis, and maintain strict academic standards.

“I always felt that the Honors Program was a place I called home.” Honors student Ricardo Hernandez ‘13 served as a research assistant at the Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach with Dr. Gerald Benjamin, and as editor-inchief of Avant-Garde Magazine, the first women’s magazine at New Paltz. He received the Cetrino Scholarship, which enabled him to attend New Paltz by funding his tuition.

“Students should be able to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be, unfettered by financial debt.” —Tom Cetrino ’73

IMAGINE expanding the Honors Program to support

distinctive, interdisciplinary work by providing 50 new Honors students with 50% tuition scholarships.

New Paltz’s fertile environment of discovery and innovation extends beyond the campus through our internship program. Most internships are unpaid; scholarships provide the support that gives students the benefits of a live-learn experience. Students have the opportunity to explore their chosen fields and learn how to excel in the workplace. Employers benefit from the new ideas and energy that an intern brings to their organization, and the opportunity to evaluate a possible future employee.

SCHOLARSHIPINTERNSHIPS

Between the 2009–10 and 2013–14 academic years, our internship program nearly doubled to 512 from 258 credit-bearing student internships.

“... the aspect I most enjoyed from the internship was being able to combine work and school for a semester. After the internship I found a job right away on a campaign in Ulster County due largely in part to my experience in the Assembly.” Brian Collis ’11 was accepted into the New York State Assembly’s competitive internship program in Winter 2011. His report, “An Analysis of Microstamping Legislation in the Political Process” was selected for inclusion in the New York State Assembly 2011 Distinguished Internship Reports.

STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM FIELDS

IMAGINE investing

in scholarship-internships for 40 additional students with 50% tuition scholarships allowing them to translate potential into results.

In the past five years, the number of STEM majors at New Paltz has nearly doubled to 769 from 439—in physical and biological sciences, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Targeted scholarships open these fields of study to historically underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

Kasandra Diaz Santana ’15, a psychobiology major, won 1st place at the 2014 Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program Statewide Conference for her poster presenting her work with New Paltz professor Jennifer Waldo in genetics.

“ The research I’ve been working on in the lab with my mentor, Dr. Grossi, is an ongoing project I started when I was an undergraduate student. We’re still learning from it and extracting new findings... My master’s thesis is based on our neuroscience research. I really love what I’m doing here. I couldn’t picture myself at any other university.” –Emily Heimbender ’13 ‘15g
