PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In 2019, SUNY Schenectady County Community College will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Thousands of students have felt empowered and have been impacted by faculty, staff, and administrators. And, they all have one thing in common: they seek the American dream as they train for jobs, earn transfer credits, or enhance professional skills. These, their dreams, would not be within their reach without your selfless generosity. You give unselfishly to the College so that our students have the best chances of success, which is seen through their determination and commitment to their studies, while they are often balancing the challenges of family, work, and other responsibilities. I know that as our friends and supporters, you understand the impact of doing something extraordinary for others…you touch our students’ hearts and inspire them to forge ahead in spite of their challenges. I thank you for all you do for SUNY Schenectady and for all of our terrific students. You are transforming lives…one life at a time, and one family at a time. With Thanksgiving,

Steady H. Moono President

The two energetic Schenectady High School students (shown with Keturah Tallon, Grant Coordinator) were part of the inaugural group of 41 students in the new Smart Transfer Early College High School Program (ST-ECHS) who spent their summer at the College taking Psychology and First Year Success Seminar. Students will be able to earn their SUNY Schenectady associate’s degrees while still in high school through a $1 million grant from the New York State Education Department. They take college courses at Schenectady High School during their 9th and 10th grade years and at the College during the summers. Then, they’ll spend their 11th and 12th grade years taking courses full time on campus. In addition to Schenectady High School, the College partners with the University at Albany and SUNY Delhi on Smart Transfer. Both institutions have committed to accepting students into their institutions upon successful completion of program requirements.

Supplemental Grant Means Good Dollars and Sense for Students The College earned a highly competitive Title III Supplemental Grant of $150,000 for 2018-2019 from the U.S. Department of Education. FOUNDATION New Keystone Society Members Keystone Society members are those who decide to recognize the College in their estate plans. Keystone Society events are held throughout the year to celebrate members and the students that they support. We recognize the following new members of the Keystone Society: Anne and Terry Phillips have been a part of the Schenectady community for more than 50 years. During that time, they raised three children and are now the lucky grandparents of seven grandchildren, ranging in age from 6 to 24. They established a Charitable Remainder Unitrust, with SUNY Schenectady named as one of the beneficiaries. Terry Phillips said that his involvement on the Foundation Board over the years has given him valuable insight as to the kind of opportunities available, and he and his wife simply wanted to help support those opportunities. “Our philosophy of philanthropy encourages us to realize that we are blessed with the ability to help our community in a small way,” Terry said. “The College gives local students an opportunity that they could not have otherwise.” Margaret A. Evans graduated from SUNY Schenectady in 1981 with her degree in Accounting, taking evening classes while she raised a family. She landed a job as Assistant Bookkeeper at the Visiting Nurse Association of Albany in August of that year, and 32 years later retired as Accounting Manager, overseeing the payroll, accounts payable, and general accounting functions of the organization. Margaret has returned to campus to take classes for fun and enjoys meeting young students. “The knowledge that I gained at SUNY Schenectady enabled me to get a good job, and to do a good job,” Margaret said. “Because of that I am now able to leave a legacy as a way of expressing my gratitude for that experience. I truly enjoyed taking classes at the College as it was a comfortable fit for me. The evening classes were generally attended by students like me, who were juggling family and work responsibilities along with their studies.”
