PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of SUNY Schenectady County Community College (SUNY Schenectady). I am most fortunate to serve as president of the College at this time, as the anniversary gives me yet another opportunity to share my pride for this institution, which stands as an enduring anchor institution and as a gateway of opportunity for thousands of students and community members. SUNY Schenectady has transformed the lives of more than 21,000 alumni and impacted thousands of others through its educational, cultural, and community outreach programs and events. Today, we are privileged to educate thousands more students who strive to make their lives better, and they come to us from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. I am very confident that in the years to come we will not only further SUNY Schenectady as an economic engine in the County and Region, but also inspire thousands of talented students who are coming of age who perhaps don’t view a college education as attainable. Thank you for walking this journey with us. Here is to another 50 Years! Photo by Stan Horaczek

ACADEMICS New Academic Programs Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate CHWs serve as liaisons between health care/social services and the community through outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy. Students learn how to apply best practices for healthcare literacy, and promotion, appropriate strategies in working with culturally diverse populations, and skills required to effectively facilitate and manage healthcare.

Direct Support Professional (DSP) Certificate Direct-care workers provide an estimated 70 to 80 percent of the paid, hands-on long-term care and personal assistance received by Americans who are elderly or living with disabilities or other chronic conditions. Students analyze the impact of social policies on individuals and systems and apply major social work theories, identifying cultural barriers to societal integration, taking courses in biology, sociology, human services, and psychology.

Dr. Joshua S. Schwartz The Honorable Karen Brown Johnson (in memoriam) Esther Swanker (in memoriam) David A. Harris Margaret A. Evans ’81 Galesi Group Stewart’s Shops

“My passion and mission in life are to ensure every person who wants a college degree, can get one – and SUNY Schenectady works to make that possible,” said top donor Dr. Joshua Schwartz. “With my current employer, TargetX, I’m fortunate to travel to college and university campuses across the world. I hear about the diverse student needs – and I always reflect on my classroom at SUNY Schenectady. My students come from many different backgrounds and ages – all eager to learn – many wanting to be role models for their children. I’m hoping my contribution to the campaign leaves a legacy behind that promotes innovation, encourages diversity in the classroom, and inspires students to challenge the status quo and make a change as future leaders. Giving to this campaign is the one way I can make sure my passion and mission live on for many years to come.” “Karen was a passionate supporter of SUNY Schenectady during her lifetime,” said Kent Johnson, Karen Johnson’s eldest son. “She believed in the power of education to transform lives. She believed that the Schenectady community would be made stronger if more of its residents could overcome financial obstacles in pursuit of their dreams through education. FOUNDATION Remembering the Honorable Karen Brown Johnson SUNY Schenectady honors the extraordinary life of the Honorable Karen Brown Johnson, who supported countless students attending the College over the course of decades. Karen passed away peacefully at her home in Schenectady on June 10, 2019. Karen was a champion of the people of Schenectady throughout her many years of civic engagement and tireless advocacy. When she moved to Schenectady in 1967, her career in public service started almost immediately. Early on, she devoted her energies to the Schenectady City School District and increased her service through her election as the first woman to the Schenectady City Council in 1975. In 1983, Karen became the first woman to be elected Schenectady’s mayor, serving in this role for two terms, and later serving as a member of the Schenectady County Legislature from 2001 until her death. Always passionate about bringing people together for the common purpose of creating innovative solutions to community challenges, Karen was instrumental in preventing the Glendale Nursing Home from closing, helped to save Proctors from demolition, established the Kids Arts Festival, and founded Jazz on Jay. She was also a member of the third generation of her family’s business, Highlights for Children. SUNY Schenectady honored Karen as a Distinguished Community Volunteer in 2016. In 2018, she earned Schenectady’s highest distinction, the Patroon Award, and she was recognized by the Women’s Fund of the Capital Region as a Trailblazer. In March 2019, the Schenectady County Legislature elected to name in her honor the main branch

At once both tenacious and humble, Karen’s thoughtful nature, fierce determination, strength, commitment to inclusiveness, and change-maker mentality touched many lives and will be deeply missed. She leaves a legacy to support students in perpetuity through

her Karen Brown Johnson Scholarship endowment at SUNY Schenectady, which will enable Schenectady students to pursue their dreams, impacting generations with her kindness.

COUNT Y COMMUNIT Y COLLEGE FOUNDATION

PAVING THE WAY FOR FUTURE ROYALS On September 17, 1969, Schenectady County Community College opened its doors to the public, welcoming students who were ready to take the next steps in their education.

Join us in marking 50 years of empowering students through education, and helping to lay the groundwork for the next 50 with your gift to our 50th Anniversary Brick Campaign: Paving the Way for Future Royals. SUNY Schenectady is creating an area that will beautify the campus and become a serene space for students and visitors. The walkway will feature a commemorative brick pathway. Bricks engraved with the names of alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and retirees serve as a reminder of the people who are part of our history and our future.

Support Students on Their SUNY Schenectady Journey Your participation in Paving the Way for Future Royals will help to ease financial burdens that pose obstacles to a student’s academic success, graduation, and personal growth. Contributions fund scholarships that cover the cost of books and fees, emergency loans that help alleviate temporary stresses, Food Pantry supplies, and Achieving The Dream. Support for Paving The Way for Future Royals will help students to manage challenges and put them on the path to accomplishing their goals.

ORDER YOUR BRICK TODAY. Bricks can be purchased for $150 ($100 for faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees). Fee covers bricks, engraving of text, and installation. Bricks measure approximately 7 ½ x 4 inches. Your engraved brick connects you with our College and its mission. Name, class (or retirement) year, and a school or department name can be listed. Up to three lines of text, 18 characters per line can be displayed. Character count will include punctuation and spaces. All inscriptions shall be centered on the brick in capital letters. Punctuation is limited to any contemporary keyboard symbol. Spaces between words cannot be omitted to make an inscription fit within the character limit. Learn more or buy a brick at sunysccc.edu/50years.
