The theme of this portfolio is evolution. As ecosystem or human society, architecture or city also has an intrinsic rule about evolution. More or less, elements of a design are transformed from the simplest geometry in nature. In ancient days, this transformation seemed extremely obvious, but the progress of technology gives people more ways to create chromatic spaces. We could even put some complex representations such as emotion, philosophy and computer programming into a building, which make spaces exceedingly different. Therefore, the process of design is exploring how to manipulate the evolution, which is worth learning for a very long period.

The theme of UIA-HYP CUP 2016 Competition is Concept and Symbol. People commonly evaluate a building by its shape, space or meterial but this time I am expected to create spaces showing some feelings of human like smell, taste or emotion, etc. I choose to bring human's emotions into my design: every space used for storing commemorative albums has a theme to show one kind of emotion. Meanwhile, a choice mechanism will give each space different experience while people are touring. In addition, th exterior shape is like a stack of Chongqing traditional houses which represents the reemerging of ruined old town. The cemetery is finally evolved from the prototypes of six emotions and the formation of traditional house.

Background of Cemetery
Funeral was an indispensible part of Chinese culture and Chinese believe death means a new birth.
In modern society, more Chinese neglect funeral culture and cemetery is no longer considered in urban planning and design.
On the contrary, cemeteries built in western countries often have connections with people's daily life.
In China, lots of high-rise buildings in cities have occupied almost the whole land, and there is no more space for cemetery.
Site Analysis
It is required to combine urban spaces with burial culture and build cemeteries as centers of memorizing.
Spatial Series of Daijia Lane
Narrow passageways.
Many ladders.
The gallery biside the cliff offers people a platform to take a break and communicate.
Modern sapce can be seen through the old lane.
Yuzhong District is a peninsula surrounded by Jialing River and Changjiang river.Daijia Lane is located on a cliff off the shore of Jialing River. The height of the cliff is about 30m and the cliff is like an obstacle between the upper city and Jiabin Road. I think it is necessary to build a connection with them for people's commuting.

Nowdays, Daijia Lane is a place which is not fit for the modern surrounding environment because it has a lot of old and shabby houses. The composition of Daijia Lane's population is quite mixed and the income of people here is very low. Therefore, Daijia Lane is like a slum in Yuzhong district of Chongqing.

Outside The Entrance. It provides people with a platform to enjoy the view of city.
Theme: Pain
Theme: Delight
Narrow passageways and waterways, vertical rough walls and dim atmosphere make this space full of contradiction and pain.
Plant vegetations are in rounded sinking spaces and the sunlight can come into the room through glass boxes to illuminate the whole space, which means delight and happiness.
Theme: Confusion
Entrance. It is the beginning of this cemetery.
Theme: Enlightenment
The arrangement of shelf is like a maze which symbolizes confusion and lost while sparks in shelves will guide people to go ahead.
A large piece of glass, symmetrical geometry and a sinking part of floor mean enlightened experiences of life.
Theme: Depression
People make their first choice in the hallway.
Some trees are rounded by glass columns which means immortality life cycle.
Water falls down along the arc-shaped wall and that symbolizes periodicity.
Theme: Brightness
The limited number of window prevents sunlight into the space. Those shelves are all in order and the sinking spaces mean a feeling of depression in one's mind.
Broken windows produce lively shadows which symbolize a bright period in one's life.

Dublin is a city which is damp, gloomy and cold during the winter. People in Dublin want to experience outdoors whenever there is any sunlight, so a lot of activities can happen outdoors when the weather is fine. Therefore, I tried to design a building more than a normal apartment. It is a community for people to meet each other, creating more possibilities about life.

KNOTS
In this design, I want to make the hign-speed rail station seem transparent in the environment, to reduce the visual impact on nature. Thus, I get inspiration from forest because trees can fit for the nature perfectly.

Site Analysis
Normal Pattern
Inspiration
Normally, architects design a station with a enomous form in order to offer sufficient spaces to meet the demand of people. However, the pattern will lead to a nagative impact on surrounding environment because the huge body is a visual barrier.
I get inspiration from forest due to its transparency and penetrability. The sunlight and the wind can penetrate it through the interspace of leaves to make interchange of material. Also, people's sight will not be blocked because trunks are relative slender. I think these characteristics can be use in building design, to break a huge body into pieces.

Site
Lan-Yu Line
The site of this high-speed rail station is located in Guang'an, Sichuan Province. Due to the far distance to the downtown of Guang'an, the local government plan to build a new town here with a rail station. Previously, there were many natural resources especially forests, but modern buildings would substitute most of them.
Xixi River
Downtown
Qu River
The central pillar of a basic unit is evolved from a trunk and the celling is like a tree crown, so the sunlight and the wind can go through it.
Basic Form Selection
In all plane geometries, only triangle, rectangle and hexagon can complete seamless combination because the angle in a circular segment is 360°.
15
·Mingjian Suo ·Email smj08642@outlook.com ·Tel +1 314-229-7831
In these three options, if one of them has more edges, its ratio of area to perimeter is bigger and can save materials. Therefore, hexagon is the best choice.

THE CHAIN OF CITY
The theme of this urban design is TOD City because a high-speed rail station will be built in this site. We have to find a solution to deal with the relationship between the station and the rest part of this site.
Studio Work Instructor: Liu Jie Team: Deng Yuwen Work:Anlysis 50%, Design 50%, Drawing 50% Date: July 2017 Location: Fengjie, Chongqing, China
We design several axes to dominate the area and all the planning is based on these axes. In the urban design, buildings, roads and trees can be regarded as foundamental prototypes which construct the whole city together. Thus, city is a result of evolution.

Development Pattern
Small cities and towns in China are facing a severe peoblem that most young people would not like to stay here but choose to leave their hometowns for big cities because the transportation in small town is inconvenient and the local government does not exactly know how to make full use natrual and cultrual resources to attract young people. However, if there is a high-speed rail station, locals can integrate all available resources and then create a complete chain of industry due to the convenient transportation, appealing to more people, especially for the young. We think it will offer vitality to the old city. Fengjie has abundant natural resources and a facinating cultural backgound. We want to make Fengjie a place where people can not only see beautiful scenery but also learn about some Chinese traditional cultures such as poem. Meanwhile, locals will find a way to earn more money and young people will stay here. Transportation

Zhengwan-Line crosses the site and divides the site into two parts.
We want to make the railway a generator of daily life and attach many functions to it.
Introduce main axes and accessory axes in to the site.
High-speed rail station is the center of city and there are also many accessory centers.
We design the space like a chain above or under the railway to connect the two parts.
The extension of the chain can form some enclosed spaces.
Build a block in the north along with an accessory axis.
Most public functions like transportation and commerce are arranged along the main axis.
Establish space corridors to connect every tower on the main axis.
The pedestrian system is like a net to improve the transportation in the site.
