WELCOME TO

SUPANOVA 2018 Welcome to Supanova Comic Con & Gaming 2018 in Sydney and Perth! This time I’m beginning with Perth!

sponsors

It was ten years ago in 2008 that Supanova first made its way across the Nullarbor and just like now we were on the last weekend that fell fully within June. The reception we received from the 7,800 amazing fans that turned out (our biggest first up crowd at the time) meant we were always going to come back. You loved us, and we loved you! And we still do, which makes it that much more of a privilege to keep supporting the community there, as you’ve supported us. Perth’s been through some tougher economic times of late, but we know this too shall pass and for one glorious weekend of pop culture comic con goodness we can forget about all that and just enjoy immersing ourselves in cosplay and muggle awesomeness! As for Sydney, there’s so much to be said and so little space. Supanova has its roots in Sydney, having begun humbly in 2000 as comicfest! Changing our name to Supanova in 2002 helped, yet it still took a while to grind up through the gears being in such a large a city. But we kept at it long enough for fans to find the comic con they were looking for! Now, as the jewel in our crown we look forward to making Sydney the best event it can possibly be while challenging ourselves to continually step up on your behalf, our fans. So, as you immerse yourself in this Event Programme we hope you’re either planning your weekend strategically in having downloaded it in advance or you’re rekindling, in your mind’s eye, the fun you had by walking back through the convention via these pages. Yours in fun, Daniel Zachariou Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Founder and Event Director

Info Booth, ATMs, toilets and parent change rooms are marked on the precinct maps on page 34 of this Programme. An all-ages event, Supanova is a friendly and fun place where everyone can feel included, so please be kind to your fellow fans. Harassment in any form will not be tolerated. Supanova encourages a diverse and colourful community – everyone deserves equal respect, so mind your manners and be kind to one another! Always ask permission if you’d like to take a photo and never touch someone without consent.

Where Are Your Kids?

For parents and guardians: as you enter Supanova, agree on a place to meet your child if they somehow get lost. The “Kids Wristbands” table near the entrance (see the map on pages 36-37) is where you pick up a Child ID Wristband, so you can be contacted if your child becomes separated from you. Children 12 years and under cannot be left unattended. If you need to report a lost child, please do so at the Information Desk.

If you have a special needs access request (e.g. in Q&A panels or autograph lines) due to a disability or mobility requirement, please approach a volunteer and let them know what you need because they can assist you. Remember to bring your disability or carer’s card with you. Supanova has a designated Meeting Point at the Information Desk for friends and families to coordinate themselves throughout the day. If you get separated, have a plan!

Need Help?

Feeling overwhelmed by the crowds? Just need some fresh air? Supanova is a busy and noisy place and sometimes you just need a time out. Be sure to ask for help from our volunteers or at the Information Desk, where our staff can assist you in feeling yourself again.

ely hard behind in. m e r t x e k r o w f f a Our st lift the curta o t e im t ’s it o s , s e the scen nd rose! a e c u r b t e e m e s a e Pl Bruce

Bruce’s beard game has grown stronger over the years, but back in 2005 when he first stumbled into Supanova bright eyed and bushy tailed, he did not know that it was the beginning of an epic journey in pop culture. From that first event in Sydney, Bruce has brought his knowledge of all things tech, AV and broadcast to Supanova as the Head of AV Tech. Working with everyone from cosplayers and exhibitors, right up to the big players like Hasbro and Disney, every show brings a unique challenge for Bruce and his team to sink their teeth into. When not working with Supanova, Bruce is an award winning commercial and fine art photographer, broadcast director, and video producer. It’s not uncommon to see Bruce in an airport heading to some other destination with camera bag in tow. Bruce has been a pop culture fan since childhood, watching Saturday morning cartoons and wearing out his taped-from-TV copy of Superman. His teenage years were spent playing D&D in the science lab and avoiding the sun. Over the years his tastes have evolved to include horror, anime and cult foreign films. Just like Where’s Wally, if you catch a glimpse of the bearded wonder at a Supanova show, you are one of the privileged few as his job means that he is never in one place long enough for the dust to settle.

Rose

Rose heads up the Stage Management team and is an integral part of the well-oiled machine that makes all the theatres and panels at Supanova run smoothly. In a nutshell, the team is responsible for ensuring that the right things are happening on the right stage at the right time. Working hard to pull so many different departments together at Supanova can be a challenge (especially when guests pop out for a “quick break” just before their Q&A and don’t come back for 20 minutes!), but hearing the cheers of the fans and seeing the smiles on the panellists’ faces is worth the effort. Rose started volunteering for Supanova in 2014 just to try something different, and it ended up propelling her into a professional career in events. Growing up in a strict household, Rose is a relative newcomer to the world of pop culture; she may not have known her Star Wars from her Star Trek but she has boldly gone where many have gone before (into some serious catching-up), and she is loving every minute of it. Especially now that she finally understands all the references she’s been missing out on her entire life! Outside of Supanova she works on major events in Sydney such as the official Australia Day, Anzac Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations. You might not see Rose and the stage managers at the show because they’re usually lurking backstage, but if you cheer extra loud for your favourite guest it makes their jobs worthwhile!

Turn your passion into a career! Applications for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Costume, Design and Props and Diploma of Make-up open in July.

A SUPERHERO COSTUME

WITH A TWIST

Not all heroes wear capes,

some wear Supertees! Australian company Supertee produces children’s medical garments disguised as superhero costumes that give courage and comfort to children battling cancer, and co-founder Jason Sotiris will launch the amazing product this month. After years of hard work and with the help of Supanova, Sotiris will unveil the range of garments at Westmead Children’s Hospital, with “Supa-Stars”, cosplayers and more attending the launch and meeting ill children, while attendees at the Sydney convention can purchase the garment or make a donation at their booth. The story of Supertee begins five years ago when Sotiris was sitting by his then one-year-old daughter Angela’s hospital bed after she had been diagnosed with a rare cancer-like disease, multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis. “I just remember being angry, scared and sad. Why her? Why not me? She was so little so innocent, so perfect,” Sotiris recalls. The chemotherapy was intense and with a lot of equipment around the place, including cables from the drip, lines and monitors, something so simple as changing t-shirts became a challenge. Sotiris teamed up with childhood friend and tradie mate Yusuf Muklis and came

26

up with the idea of the Supertee. “It’s a way we can all help, all fight back and help these kids believe they are stronger than they think,” Sotiris explains. With Angela turning six this year and now healthy, Sotiris has big plans for the Supertee – the next goal is to raise $60,000 via a GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign in order to develop and massproduce the Supertee. This will ultimately boost funding and raise awareness for all-important hospital research into childhood cancer. Each Supertee comes with its own comic book and the option of an added cape that doubles as a bib. You can join the fight by stopping by their booth in Sydney and donating a Supertee to a sick child or leaving a gold coin donation. You can also contribute to the GoFundMe campaign, follow Supertee on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag #HEROESWANTED when posting about the cause. “Come by, say hello, we look forward to meeting you,” Sotiris says. “If you’re lucky, you might be able to meet my little superhero that inspired it all. “We want to empower little heroes everywhere, fighting their own battles with illness, to have the courage to win those battles.”

SUPANOVA’STHEALLEY! Most pop culture conventions have an Artists’ Alley. Us? We have THE ALLEY! Showcasing incredible artists, fan clubs, storytellers and traders of the most amazing merch, The Alley is an absolute must-see for every visitor to Supanova. To make it easier to discover what makes your heart pound or soar, The Alley is divided into the following easily navigated districts…

This is the place for indie gaming and film/TV-based startups and promotions. Get in on the ground floor of these grass roots creative endeavours!

The home of artisans and craftspeople producing their own prints, posters and postcards, jewellery and badges, t-shirts and other amazing wearables, mugs, frames, statues and any number of other incredible, singular products.

The name says it all! Fans showing and sharing their love for their chosen obsessions. Hook up with kindred spirits and benefit from the camaraderie of shared interests. This is also where you’ll find charity organisations.

This is where storytellers of all kinds can be found. Whether presented in comics or graphic novels, self-published children’s books or novels, manga or mini-comics, it’s all here – presented by the creators, writers, artists and publishers themselves.

This is where you can discover those hard to find collectables and imports, interesting and must have artifacts, and stuff that just can’t be found anywhere else! The Supa Market fills the gap between the large importers and the lone creators.

AUTOGRAPH &PHOTOOPS HOW TO REDEEM YOUR AUTOGRAPH & PHOTOGRAPH TOKENS Bought your Token online? Jump straight to point 2! Some guests sell their autographs directly from their table and don’t require a pre-purchased Token. AUTOGRAPHS: 1. Purchase your Token/s from the Supanova Store or online at Moshtix. 2. Take your Token or printed Barcode to the Supa-Star Signing Area and queue for your turn. 3. Exchange your Token, or have your Barcode scanned, and get your celebrity print from the Supa-Star’s assistant. If you have your own item, just hand in your Token or Barcode. 4. Enjoy your moment with your favourite Supa-Star, and your newly signed item! NOTE: a) One (1) signature per Token. b) Tokens and pre-purchased Barcodes are NON-REFUNDABLE and deemed void if you do not redeem them during the Event. Consider Tokens as if they’re CASH as they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. PHOTOGRAPHS: 1. Purchase your Token/s from the Supanova Store. The photo session time is printed on the Token you purchase. 2. Make sure you line up 10 minutes before your session at Nebula Photo Studio. 3. Hand your Token or Barcode to the assistant as you enter the queue, they’ll exchange it for a Validation Ticket. 4. Hand over your Validation Ticket at the studio door and have your photo taken with the Supa-Star! 5. Collect your photo Collection Docket on exiting the Photo Studio. 6. Proceed straight to the Photo Collection Area where a volunteer will scan your Docket and print your photo. NOTE: a) Photo fees do not include an autograph. To get your photo signed, you must have an autograph Token/Barcode as well (see above). b) Tokens are NONREFUNDABLE if you do not redeem them during your nominated photo session. c) Consider Tokens as if they’re CASH as they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.

Hey Supa-Fans!

Cosplay has grown and expanded over the past 15 years to become one of the most incredible parts of the show. To keep up with that growth as well as the legislative requirements of each state, we’ve put some rules in place regarding props and costumes to ensure everyone is cosplaying safely. The Supanova Cosplay Guidelines include the following 6 Core Guidelines:

1. Respect Everyone

Treat your fellow attendees with kindness and respect.

2. Excessive Prop Weights

Overly heavy props can cause injury, so aim to use light materials if you can.

3. Excessive Prop and Costume Sizes Props longer than 1.5m will need to be taken to Weapons Check.

4. State and Federal Legislative Requirements We must comply with the law, so any violations will be addressed.

5. Hazardous Materials

Metal blades, firearms and similar items are not safe for conventions.

6. Cosplay HQ’s Weapons Check If in doubt, come by – it’s there to assist the cosplayers of Supanova!

The Supanova Cosplay Guidelines were developed with feedback from the Australian cosplay community, research and consultation. We’re confident they’re the best way to maintain a safe and friendly environment for all attendees. Check out the Supanova Website for the full list of the Supanova Cosplay Guidelines: http://www.supanova.com.au/weapons-policy/ or come speak to the team at Cosplay HQ.
