MERRIMAN PARK FUN DAY
T
he third annual Merriman Park Fun Day will take place on Saturday, September 2. The objectives of the day are to attract local residents to visit the park and to give local clubs and organisations the opportunity to promote themselves and to also raise funds for their cause. Last year was a resounding success, and the support of residents throughout the day was remarkable considering the weather. The event will start at 1pm and run through to the evening, finishing by 10pm. The format this year will be similar to the previous two years, with plenty of stalls together with music and refreshments during the afternoon, but the layout of the park and some of the attractions during the day will be quite different. Among those changes will be more rides and activities for the youngsters. There will be live music featuring Livewired and TJ, together with a bar and hot and cold food from 6.30pm in the evening. The event is organised by the Merriman Park Community Group and is sponsored by Street Parish Council. To get further information or to request a pitch booking form, please contact David Atkins on either 01458 443055 or davidbatkins@btinternet.com.
I can’t believe it’s over for another year. The Godney Gathering has now been and gone, what an amazing day it was. It was great catching up the likes of Bob Gallie, Duncan Batey and Ian Liversidge to name but a few local famous faces at the annual event. We did have some rain for a little while but I loved it as it meant people were heading towards the tents for shelter and catching artists they weren’t planning on seeing. The festival also debuted a couple of new Safehaus tracks that were recorded before Ben passed away. They will be available to purchase on a limited edition vinyl on sale on August 27 – which is Ben’s birthday.
August 4 will see local Country rockers Square One release their debut album. Early previews suggest it is going to be amazing, so look out for the links online to purchase it. Georgie Robbins

THE
NEW HOME FOR SHOW
People who weren’t there think the Swinging Sixties was all sex, drugs and rock ’n’roll. Most of those who were there don’t remember it of course, but Bob Lloyd, who presents the Charting History show on GFM, says the truth is very different… The music was not all love and peace. “Some of it is just amazing, like the song all about the Highway Code,”he explains. Bob is working through the 1960s, playing the whole Top 20 chronologically. “Tracks were so short then that I can play 40 in a two-hour show around me talking,”says Bob, “and it takes seven weeks of the show to cover a year.” Bob started DJ-ing in youth clubs as a lad, then moved on to hospital radio and GFM. “I love radio and entertaining people, and music is my diary. You play the song and I can tell you what I was doing then.” Bob was a firefighter in London before moving to Glastonbury with his wife Jane. Charting History broadcasts on Mondays 5-7pm, repeated on Saturdays 8-10pm, at 107.1 FM and glastonburyfm.co.uk online. It’s well worth a listen.

FOOTBALL FIXTURES
Street FC
Street High Street is looking very summery at the moment. The hanging baskets are maturing and enhancing the banners which decorate the lampposts along the road. That’s Street from the outside, but there are plenty of things going on inside two buildings in Leigh Road for either end of the age spectrum. Street Library is participating in The Big Summer Reading Challenge for young people, and Street Parish Council are hosting NHS health checks for 40-74 years olds. Pop into the library and find out how to take part in the free challenge. And if you are interested in a free health check on Friday, August 11, either ring Street Parish Council on 01458 440588 or use this link to book: www. somersethealthchecks.co.uk/streetparish.

PAINTJAM COMING TO SOMERSET
O
ver the past few years, MOAuk of Glastonbury (with the help of paint supplier Crafty Shop, who are based at Church Lane, Glastonbury BA6 9JQ) have been painting walls and festivals throughout Somerset and Devon – the image below is from this year’s Godney Gathering. They are soon to paint at the renowned Upfest Street Art festival in Bristol and then a nightclub in Manchester. From the start MOAuk have made an impact, helping paint the infamous Glastonbury Mural in Northload Street. The scale and colour did upset some, but it’s been massively supported by most residents. This summer the lads have been given the opportunity to hold a PaintJam within Glastonbury Skatepark on August 26 from 11am to 10pm. Over 30 artists are expected to join Sym, Sikoh, and DMK for a day of painting and DJing. Later that evening at 8pm, TaskForce and Smellington Piff are performing at the Bocabar to help continue the flow of art and music over the whole day. The event is titled Styles of Somerset – Paint in the Park, and MOAuk’s Sym explains the simple formula behind it all: “We’ve invited artists and DJs to the skatepark for a PaintJam. We’ll have a graff-wall built by then, and the park’s fencing will be boarded up for the day, too. The event is open to the public and completely free, so anyone can pop alone and watch the art unfold,
check out different styles and enjoy some tunes. We just ask those legally allowed to drink do so responsibly (ID may be required, and no glass please), and that the security and stewards who are at the event are given the same respect as the artists and performers. “I’m looking forward to seeing the day unfold. The only downer for me is that due to the number of people potentially within the park, we don’t have insurance for actual skateboarding to take place, which is horribly ironic!” Some of the artists joining MOAuk on the day will be: Boswell, Lokey, Paris, Smak, TAF, PWA, EAS, Klue, Annika Wilkinson, John Mason, FRA, Pekoe, Dohe, and more. Supplying beats will be Vesica Productions, DJ loko, Krazy Legz, Lost4tz, Soul’Jah and gloWorm. For more information, head to www.facebook.com/ events/163600434169111. You can also check out MOAuk at: www.facebook.com/moacrewuk. This is the full version of MOAuk’s artwork from The Godney Gathering that’s on this month’s cover.

It’s always on the second weekend of August and always at Wells Town Hall, and as this is the 40th show that’s been held, everyone’s going all-out to make it a special one. The show will feature a wide range of model railway layouts –including Seaton, Sidmouth, Mendip and Cornwall – as well as a good selection of demonstrations, displays and traders.

Anyone who loves fine music (and delicious curries) is well aware how important Simon is to the Glastonbury music scene, and the whole town is getting together to throw a party that could well go down in history as one of those ‘where were you on Simon’s 60th?’ moments. On August 28 the Hawthorns will host the biggest gig it’s ever seen, with around 30 acts playing all day over three stages and an all-day BBQ. Acts include Swampgrass, Truthseekers, The Bad Cowboys, Steve Henderson, Bob Gallie, Shaun Ryan Buxton and John D Revelator. The fun starts at 11am, and the whole day is entirely free!

STREET HARVEST CHURCH
The Street Harvest Church are familiar faces around Street, and they’ve been doing great work for the community for nearly 25 years now
T
he Street Harvest Church has been doing sterling work in the area ever since it was founded in 1993, including a community programme that supports people in the Mendip and Sedgemoor areas. And they’ve got support from local businesses too, as Tesco regularly donate food to support the work they do. The church holds regular services, but they believe that Harvest should be much more than that, and so its community programme is literally open to anyone, regardless of their age, social standing or country of origin. They offer support for people in full-time or adult education, as well as social activities, community arts events and practical assistance for those who are struggling to keep their house in order – they even offer employment mentoring. Street Harvest Church runs a series of weekly events in the Street area, and these are as follows… Weekdays Midday-1pm Free lunch and contact point for any support needs, at the Southside Car Park (behind the old Tesco store). Foody Fridays Any surplus food at the end of the week is free for anyone to take away. Wednesday Church Free dinner from 7-8pm, followed by an informal

worship session from 8-9pm. This is currently being hosted at the Salvation Army hall in Goswell Road. Sundays There’s Communion and Worship from 10.30am12.30pm at the Elmhurst School Hall. Then, later in the day, there’s more Worship and Study Discussion from 7-9pm, again at the Elmhurst School Hall. Harvest Church also hold a Sunday Lunch on the last Sunday of every month after their morning worship, and a Sunday Breakfast on (usually) the second Sunday of the month from 10am – keep an eye on Harvest’s social media pages for updates on this. The best way to keep up-to-date with Harvest Church’s movements is to follow them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/streetharvest) but you can also contact Dylan on 07856 683703 or good.news@ streetharvest.org.uk.
