COMINGSOON FILM FOCUS

STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED

The latest news on 2015’s biggest movie

S

o what do we know so far? Well, the Internet has been in meltdown since the film was officially announced on the 30th of October, 2012 – the same day that Disney acquired Lucasfilm for the sum of $4.05 billion – but hard facts are still thin on the ground. The two trailers released so far have revealed that the dark side of the Force has risen again, with the wonderfully titled Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) seen

6

with a seemingly homemade lightsaber and Luke Skywalker apparently missing. The Empire are no more, but in its place is the First Order – and one of the main First Order officers is Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), the chrome stormtrooper shown above. Empire fans need not worry though, as the First Order is made up from the remnants of the Empire, so stormtroopers, TIE fighters and Star Destroyers will all appear.

TRAILER

Joss Whedon, the writer and director of (among many others) the two Avengers movies is rumoured to have signed up to do Star Wars: Episode IX. When recently asked about the role of families in the Star Wars universe, Daisy Ridley (Rey) dropped a fairly large hint that the rumours are true and she’s the daughter of Han and Leia. “I have to say that I’m ‘solitary’, that’s how I begin – that’s probably a big clue as to what it is,” said Ridley in an interview on Japanese TV. Solitary? Solo? Geddit?

RELEASED

18 DEC New characters such as Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) feature heavily but everybody really wants to see the return of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewie. They’re all back, but how do they link the old characters with the new? We believe Finn and Rey discover Luke’s lightsaber and take it to Leia, which begins a hunt for Luke who’s been in hiding since the end of the Empire in Return of the Jedi. Seriously, could it be anything less than amazing? We’ll find out soon enough.

The best Star Wars rumour we heard this month? It has to be the one that Daniel Craig has a cameo in The Force Awakens as a stormtrooper. Simon Pegg let it slip in a red carpet interview, but it’s not been confirmed by Craig himself. Although Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) doesn’t appear in Episode VII, we have it on very good authority that the original owner of the Millennium Falcon is definitely due to appear in one of the two sequels – or the three spin-off films.

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS

PERFECTLY PITCHED Anna Kendrick, the multi-talented Oscar-nominated star of Pitch Perfect 2, explains how the film and the character of Beca were created

Taking the pressure off “When you do almost every other film, you have no idea if anybody’s going to be interested in sitting down and watching your movie. To me, it felt like the pressure was off because I knew people wanted to see Pitch Perfect 2.” On creating the character of Beca “I remember something in the air on the first movie where people wanted Beca to be more energetic and enthusiastic. I told them that I just don’t think we need to try that hard. I think when you try to create the ultimate cool-girl badass, people recoil. Just let people discover her.”

8

Developing the Barden Bella sound “The Bellas have gone a little too far. They went for an original sound by the end of the first movie, and this time around it’s good, but it’s a lot. There’s too much showmanship and sound, so this movie is about them thinking they need to push it even further, when they actually need to strip back down and find themselves again.” Working with top choreographer, AJ Jones He’s worked with the best of the best, but he knows how to deal with people who say, ‘I can’t do that,’ to which he says, ‘It just looks hard; it’s going to be great.’”

RISING STAR

The hottest movie news, in bite-sized pieces

MILES TELLER

You may not instantly recognise Miles Teller, but we promise that his name is one you’ll be hearing a lot more of in the future

A

lthough he had been in films before the incredible Whiplash, it was Miles Teller’s performance as the talented music student Andrew Neyman who battles the bullying teacher Fletcher (Oscarwinner J.K. Simmons) that thrust him very deservedly into the spotlight. Miles first caught Hollywood’s eye when he starred alongside Nicole Kidman in 2010’s harrowing Rabbit Hole, before a major part in the Young Adult series, Divergent. It’s unknown whether the fact Miles has been drumming since the age of 15 (he’s now a youthfullooking 28) helped him secure the role in Whiplash, but he did have to sharpen his talents to play the gifted

jazz drummer – having lessons three days a week for four hours at a time. Now Miles is one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars, with a wide range of movies in the pipeline – including one of this year’s blockbusters, Fantastic Four, where he’ll be playing super-stretchy Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic).

STAR TRIVIA Miles was in a near-fatal car accident in 2007, which left him with multiple scars on his face and neck. Rumour has it that Miles has been signed up to play the actor (and Ghostbuster!) Dan Aykroyd in a John Belushi bio-pic – Dan and John played and acted together in the 70s and 80s as The Blues Brothers.

Believe it or not, but Marvel and Sony Pictures are rebooting Spider-Man again. The next film will appear in 2017 (with a rumoured cameo in the next Avengers film, too), and young actor Asa Butterfield has apparently bagged the title role.

Ricky Gervais has announced that The Office’s David Brent will be heading to the big screen. Titled Life on the Road, the film will centre around him touring with a struggling rock band.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that a new Indiana Jones film is ‘in the works’. There’s no news year on casting, but we’ve heard a rumour that Harrison Ford won’t be back in the role and it might go to Chris Pratt instead.

NEW AARDMAN TBA FILM ANNOUNCED And it’s taking us back to the dawn of time

A

fter the enormous success of Shaun the Sheep, Aardman are already beavering away on their next film, Early Man, and this one has Aardman co-creator Nick Park back at the helm – his first film since directing Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Obviously we know very little about the movie yet, apart from that it’ll be another stop-motion animation title and it’s set at the dawn of time, when (apparently) man roamed the earth alongside the dinosaurs. Colour us excited!

W

hen the script for The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, was leaked online in 2013, we all presumed that would be the end of it – especially when Tarantino himself hosted a charity one-off reading of the script the following April – but after a fairly hefty rewrite, filming went ahead and the resulting movie will be released later this year. Set around 1880, The Hateful Eight is peppered throughout with Tarantino’s sharp dialogue and character studies. After a blizzard forces eight bounty hunters to share a house, tempers quickly fray and it’s not long before the body count starts to rise…

TOP FIVE Tom Hardy, who stars in the recently released and critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, is a hugely versatile actor. To prove it, here are five of his most varied performances…

10 JUL

he original Ted film was such an ingenious idea that it couldn’t possibly fail. And fail it didn’t, as the combination of a razor-sharp script and an original idea made it a box office smash and ensured that a sequel was just a formality. For those (few) that missed Ted, it was all about a boy’s teddy bear that was magically brought to life. So far so safe, but as the boy turns into a man then so does the bear and, well, you can imagine the rest. A lot’s happened to Ted (voiced by the film’s writer/director, Seth MacFarlane) since the end of the first film. He’s married his girlfriend, TamiLynn, and they’re planning to start a family. Before that though, Ted receives a letter stating that he’s required to prove he’s a person in a court of law. Can Ted settle down, raise a family and win his case? Perhaps, but there’s bound to be plenty of near-misses and hilarious situations before he gets there. Be sure not to miss this, as Ted 2 will be one of the funniest and most outrageous films released this year.

roving that size really isn’t everything, the latest in the exceedingly long line of films to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (their words, not ours) is Ant-Man on the 17th of July. As the name would suggest, Ant-Man features a superhero the size of an ant and, comparatively, just as strong. Originally down to be directed by Wells’ own Edgar Wright (who left the project last year), it’s the tale of petty criminal Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who teams up with the retiring Ant-Man Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to carry on the good name and protect the secret behind the Ant-Man suit from a wide selection of evil types that are trying to steal it. Under the weight of a seemingly endless pile of superhero movies that feature enormous superhuman characters that can destroy buildings with a casual flick of the arms, Ant-Man has to be applauded for trying something new. And you’ll be able to see the results for yourself when it hits the Wells Film Centre next month.

The story centres on the character of Riley, a young girl who's run by her emotions – literally. Inside her head are five emotional characters (Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and sadness) that live in the Headquarters, the control centre in Riley's mind. Sounds bonkers? Quite possibly, but no more bonkers than a rat becoming a top chef and we all loved Ratatouille!

ou’re forgiven for not initially getting too excited about a new Fantastic Four film. After all, the last two (released in 2005 and 2007) were only average at best, but the good news here is that 2015’s Fantastic Four is new and very much improved. For starters, it’s directed by Josh Trank, who gave us the impressive character-driven sci-fi film Chronicle, and written by Simon Kinberg who’s penned three X-Men movies and is now working on 2018’s Star Wars spinoff movie, so it’s fair to say that they this is a franchise that's in safe hands. Of course, the proof will be in August when Fantastic Four is released, but all the signs are that it will not only be a match for the two previous Fantastic Four films, but that it will significantly improve upon them, too. When her daughter Julie (played by Streep’s real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer) goes through a personal crisis, Ricki decides to put her music career on hold and return to her family. In the ultimate origins film, Minions takes us way back in time to the dawn of creation to witness the birth of the minions themselves to when they discover their purpose in life. Born to serve the most despicable masters on the planet, they work for dinosaurs, Genghis Khan and Napoleon. Unfortunately for the minions though (as well as the people they serve), a series of tragic accidents leaves their masters dead and them without a job.

FILMFACTS One of the directors, Pierre Coffin, voices all the minions in the movie – over 100 of them. If you want more minions films, then there are three short minions movies on each DVD or Blue-ray for Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. Missing Gru? He’s not in the Minions movie, but Despicable Me 3 has been confirmed for release in 2017.

We skip forward a few decades now and the minions are living in Antarctica. Without anyone to serve they become bored and listless, until one more ambitious minion, Kevin, decides to head out and find a new master. With two other minions tagging along, the rebellious Stuart and the loveable little Bob, the three head to America to attend Villain-Con and find a new boss. And it’s there that the meet the world’ first female super-villain, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock). “Scarlet is an unusual supervillain,” says Minions’ co-director Pierre Coffin. “She is a dangerously charming woman, which could not have been easy in the late 1960s.” And Minions’ producer, Chris Meledandri says, “This is a side to Sandra Bullock we haven’t seen before. She is really enjoying playing with this villainy but underneath there’s a character you cannot help but fall in love with.” Rarely do we get the feeling that a film is going to be amazing before we’ve seen it, but anyone who’s seen any of the three trailers for Minions knows that it’s guaranteed to be a hysterical movie from the first scene to the very end.

TRAILER TRAWL The best bits of the film’s trailer… 1 The year is 1968 and the minions are off to find a new master to work for. 2 Hitching a lift, they get picked up by a family heading to Villain-Con in Orlando. 3 But when they get there, the only baddie anyone is talking about is Scarlet Overkill. 4 Scarlet tells the minions a bedtime story – with a suitably scary ending!

an Andreas is a big film. From the movie’s star, Dwayne Johnson (who stands at six foot, five inches), to the grade-9 earthquake that rips through California after the infamous San Andreas fault collapses, it’s a film that respectfully channels classic Irwin Allen disaster movies from the 1970’s, such as The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, yet brings the genre bang up to date with some stunning visual effects. Interviewed at San Andreas’ British premiere, the film’s star, Dwayne Johnson said, “The movie is big, it’s epic. There are visual effects

and there’s family. There are all these cool elements that if you do right in a disaster genre – which is a hard genre to get right – then we have a shot at making it cool.” Family is an important word here, as San Andreas is all about it. Johnson plays Ray, a search and rescue helicopter pilot in Los Angeles who, along with his estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino), must brave a crumbling city to fly across to San Francisco to rescue their daughter, Blake (Alexandra Daddario). Little do they realise though, that a second, larger earthquake is about to hit the whole state of California…

FILMFACTS The San Andreas fault is a tectonic fault line that runs through most of California. Expert seismologists predict that it could cause a massive earthquake at any time. Dwayne Johnson’s first movie role was 2001’s The Mummy Returns.

he Barden Bellas are back! After their triumphant victory at the nationals, the stage seems set for them to take over the world – especially when they’re booked in to performance for the President at his birthday celebrations. Unfortunately though, after a rather revealing wardrobe malfunction by Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) during the performance, the Bellas are suspended from performing in any a cappella competition. Their only hope for salvation is if they can win the a cappella worlds in Copenhagen, but that means going head-to-head

with the ruthless German group, Das Sound Machine. As Anna Kendrick, who plays the role of Beca, the leader of the Barden Bellas says, “The Bellas have gone a little too far, so this movie is about them thinking they need to push it even further, when they actually need to strip it back down and find themselves again.” After the enormous success of the first film, a sequel was inevitable, really. Thankfully though, the hugely talented writer of the original Pitch Perfect film is back, and Elizabeth Banks – who returns as Gail – is taking over directorial duties. June 2015

FILMFACTS Despite nearly missing out on the chance to play the role of Gail in the first Pitch Perfect movie (it very nearly went to Kristen Wiig), Elizabeth Banks has gone on to not only star in the sequel but direct it too! Real a capella groups were used during filming.

ou’ve got to feel sorry for Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy). Getting a job with the CIA and expecting a life of excitement and danger as an agent in the field, she actually ends up working as a low-level analyst. She may be good at her job, but rather than dodging bullets and travelling the world, she’s more likely to be found behind a desk filing paperwork. All that changes though when Susan’s called up for an undercover job – as, to be honest, she’s the only one working for the CIA who wouldn’t be recognised. Before she

knows it, Susan is working alongside her reluctant co-agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham) and battling her Bridesmaids co-star Rose Byrne (playing the gloriously over-the-top villain, Rayna Boyanov). Spy is another great film from the very much in vogue McCarthy. She’s funny without resorting to stealing scenes and chewing scenery, and this is the third time she’s worked with the writer/director Paul Feig (previously, he’s directed her in Bridesmaids and The Heat). The pair will be reunited again next year for the hotly anticipated all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

FILMFACTS Paul Feig has worked with Melissa McCarthy twice previously (on Bridesmaids and The Heat) and they’re working together again for 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot. Melissa McCarthy trained in the Filipino martial art Kali for the role.

f you remember, at the end of 2001’s Jurassic Park 3 everyone escapes from the island and the whole dinosaur eco system is left to sort itself out quietly on its own. As nice as that would be, it doesn’t necessarily make for interesting movies, so now, 14 years later, we have Jurassic World, and the park is very much open for business. Jurassic World is set 22 years after the events in the third film, and while the park features the whole range of dinosaurs available through John Hammond’s original cloning programme, and plenty of creatures that would chomp through you

given the slightest opportunity, the punters (around 20,000 a day) are getting a little bored. As the stock price for the park begins to drop, the powers that be (chiefly the park’s Operations Manager, Claire Dearing – Bryce Dallas Howard) decide that the way forward is to genetically engineer larger, smarter and fiercer dinosaurs to bring the crowds back. The result is the Indominus rex, a creature twice the size of a T-rex and with a sizeable temper, too. All well and good, until disaster strikes, the Indominus rex escapes from its pen and the park is thrown into chaos. June 2015

FILMFACTS Jurassic World is considered to be a direct sequel to the first Jurassic Park film – and therefore ignoring the two movies that followed the original. You may notice that the T-rex in the film is the original one from Jurassic Park!

n the surface, Danny Collins (Al Pacino) appears to be a very happy man. After a long career in the music industry he is both a household name and also ridiculously rich, but despite the fame and fortune, something is missing from Danny’s life. All that changes though when Danny’s manager, Frank (Christopher Plummer) gives him a letter that John Lennon wrote to him in the early 70s. In it, Lennon reassures Danny that it is possible to have fame and fortune while keeping his artistic integrity. Danny realises he’s lost touch with both his music and his family, so quits

his world tour and books himself into a hotel to work on his music – while at the same time searching for his son (Bobby Cannavale). So far so good, but what’s really interesting about Danny Collins is the fact that it’s based on a true story. Steve Tilston is a folk musician that gave an interview with a magazine that John Lennon just so happened to read and respond to. Like Danny, Tilston didn’t get the letter until it was passed it on to him in 2005. Danny Collins is a heartwarming story, with beautiful acting by Al Pacino and Annette Bening, the hotel manager Danny tries to woo.

FILMFACTS This is the first time that Al Pacino has played a singer, but other actors that have tried it include Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Gwyneth Paltrow (Country Strong) and Keira Knightley (Begin Again). Check out page 17 to find out more about Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep.

t’s been a whopping 30 years since the last Mad Max film was released – which was 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome – but despite Mad Max: Fury Road being in development for over 10 years, George Miller, the director of the original three films, is back as the director and co-writer, and we’re delighted to say that not only is Max back, but he’s also madder than ever! It is a new Max though, as despite the fact that Mel Gibson, the original Max, was linked to the film when it was planned for release in the early noughties, it’s Tom Hardy that’s stepped into the dust-caked boots of

Max Rockatansky. And though they might be big boots to fill, he’s done a brilliant job of it. Fury Road is set in the aftermath of a nuclear war. Water and petrol have become rare and therefore much more valuable. With violent and deranged gangs prowling the desert wastelands, life becomes literally a fight for survival. Initially a prisoner of tyrannical cult leader Immortan Joe, Max manages to escape and, eventually team up with Imperator Furiosa (brilliantly played by Charlize Theron) as they try to reach the 'Green Place' and, ultimately, safety. June 2015

FILMFACTS To give Fury Road a grittier and more real feel, over 80% of the effects used in the film are stunt-based, with as little CGI as possible. Hugh Keays-Byrne, who plays the evil Immortan Joe, also played the role of Toecutter in the original Mad Max.

ased on the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by American author Mitch Cullin, Mr. Holmes sees the world’s most famous detective (played to perfection by the always-brilliant Ian McKellen) now in his nineties and retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse. He shares his home with his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son, Roger (Milo Park), and spends his days recounting his adventures to the boy. What disturbs Sherlock more than anything though is the one case that remains unsolved. With his health and memory fading, it would appear that Sherlock

will end his days never being able to solve the case, as all he can remember are fragments of the crime, but slowly, and with the help of Roger, the pair piece together the elements of Sherlock Holmes’ final case and, for the final time, the game is afoot! Mr. Holmes reunites Ian McKellen with Bill Condon, the writer and director of 1998’s Gods and Monsters (which also starred McKellen), and it’s a match made in heaven. Sherlock Holmes is the role that McKellen was born to play and the dynamic duo of Holmes and the young Roger works wonderfully.

FILMFACTS Mr. Holmes is based on the Mitch Cullin novel A Slight Trick of the Mind – with the name changed, obviously. Nicholas Rowe plays the role of ‘Matinee Sherlock’ in Mr. Holmes, but in 1985 he was the lead in the film Young Sherlock Holmes.

hen agent Kate Abbott (Milla Jovovich) is posted to the US Embassy in the UK, she presumes it’ll be a quiet posting where she can sit around, drink tea and talk about the weather. Unfortunately for her though, the reality is very different. The wrong person in the wrong place, she finds herself at the scene of a terrorist explosion caused by the vicious assassin The Watchmaker (Pierce Brosnan). From that moment on, she’s on the run from both her employers and one of the most deadly killers in the world. It’s a race against time for Kate though, as not only does she

have to clear her name before The Watchmaker can get to her, but she’s also got to stop a large-scale terrorist attack planned for New Year’s Eve in one of the most heavily populated areas of the US, Times Square. Director James McTeigue is best known for his directorial debut, V for Vendetta, and like that film, Survivor is a tense and action-packed story of paranoia and the ever-lurking threat of a terrorist attack. Both Jovovich and Brosnan are excellent in their roles and ably supported by James D’Arcy, Angela Bassett and Frances de la Tour. Fans of classic action thrillers will find a lot to enjoy in Survivor. June 2015

FILMFACTS Aside from being the last Bond before Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan is also a professional fire eater, a huge fan of Doctor Who, is close friends with Meryl Streep, was considered for the role of Batman in the 1989 film and, judging from Mamma Mia!, really can’t sing!

CLASSIC MOVIE MOMENTS

RELEASED 1979  DIRECTOR Ridley Scott  STARRING Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, Veronica Cartwright Setting the scene… Picking up what they initially believe to be a distress call from the planet LV-426, three crew members of the commercial spacecraft Nostromo land to investigate. After discovering a crashed spaceship (and the source of the call’s signal), Gilbert Ward Kane (John Hurt), the Nostromo’s Executive Officer, is lowered down into a hanger filled with pods. Kane notices that when he passes his hand through a laser-like blue light that covered the whole of the hanger, there’s a reaction from the pods beneath. Little does he know that in a

matter of minutes, a facehugger will burst free from one of the pods and attach itself to his face.… Did you know? The set team produced over 130 alien eggs for the spaceship on LV-426 (remember, this was before CGI technology could duplicate them). Also, the laser lights that were used so effectively in the scene were borrowed by the band The Who – they were testing them for their stage show in the soundstage next to where Alien was being filmed.
