The Wells Film Centre was established in 1992 by Derek Cooper. Derek has been in the cinema industry for over 30 years, and started in the old Regal cinema – just next door to the Wells Film Centre. Originally a village hall and scout hut, Derek built the cinema up from a single screen to the three state-of-the-art digital screens it now houses. In the last couple of years, Derek has passed the management of the Wells Film Centre over to his daughters Sally, Becky and Libby, who share Derek’s passion for film and will ensure that the Wells Film Centre remains a family business that the whole community can enjoy.

We’ve spent two years getting this together and there’s been so much hard work and effort Daniel Craig

B

ond is back! MI6 are still reeling from the terrorist attack by Raoul Silva in 2012’s Skyfall, and while M (Ralph Fiennes) continues to fight the political fight to keep MI6 going, James Bond (Daniel Craig) comes face-to-face with a sinister organisation known as SPECTRE. A cryptic message from Bond’s childhood takes him to Mexico City and Rome, leads him to an previous adversary from Casino Royale – who has a chilling warning for Bond – and then on to a dramatic encounter with the enemy he seeks, the head of SPECTRE, Franz Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz). After the enormous success of Skyfall (the most successful British film ever, so no pressure there then), all eyes are on the Bond team to see

if lightning will indeed strike twice and Sam Mendes (director), Daniel Craig (star) and John Logan (writer) are the trio that plan to convince everyone that Spectre will be something very special indeed.

Skyfall times ten In a recent interview, Daniel Craig himself says that Spectre is "Skyfall times ten", with high-speed car chases around Rome and 1,500 extras brought in to recreate the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico. "I think everyone was just daunted," says Craig on the pressure of following Skyfall. "Where do we go from there? How do you process that? But we got into the story and rooted out the connections, and they were too good to leave alone."

His wife (Emma Thompson) only allows him to undertake the potentially dangerous journey if he’s able to find a companion to go with him, and after a few failed attempts, he finally convinces an old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) to join him on a trip that could completely redefine the meaning of the word ‘adventure’. Based on the 1998 book of the same name by Bryson himself, A Walk in the Woods is a beautifully filmed celebration of the American countryside and features sterling performances from Redford and Nolte as the mismatched adventurers.

October 2015

FILMFACTS Robert Redford initially had the idea of filming Bill Byron’s book back in 1998 as a project for himself and Paul Newman. Nick Nolte and Robert Redford have appeared onscreen together before – in 2012’s The Company You Keep.

uring a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm forces the rest of his crew to abandon the mission and accidentally leave him behind on the planet. The crew believed that Watney died during

the storm but the reality was that he survived, only to then find himself stranded on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while at the same time his crewmates plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. A tense and dramatic plot and some stunning performances from Damon himself, as well as Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig, means that The Martian is a thriller that will keep you on the edges of your seats. October 2015

FILM FACTS The writer of The Martian novel, Andy Weir, first published his book for free on his website just for fun. Such was the book’s popularity that he eventually uploaded a digital version to Amazon for the Kindle book reader and charged just $0.99 per copy.

10

widescreen

In the eye of the storm stand the jockeys. Loved and loathed by the districts they represent, they forge alliances and make deals promising large cash sums to try and get the best start. Legendary rider Gigi Bruschelli has won 13 Palios in 16 years and, two races away from beating the world record, Bruschelli will do anything to win. But one jockey stands in his way: his former trainee, Giovanni Atzeni, who is determined to challenge his old mentor. Their passionate and dramatic battle is an epic and cinematic tale of Italian life in microcosm.

October 2015

FILM FACTS The race dates back to the late 16th century, and the first races were on buffaloes! The Palio di Siena horse race is held twice a year on July 2 and August 16 at the Piazza del Campo, and is made up of 10 horses and riders.

ver the years there’s been no shortage of origins stories (from the X-Men to Batman, we’ve seen them all over the years), but one upcoming film this October may just top the lot, as it lets you have a glimpse at how J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan may have gone

Easter Eggs are intentional inside jokes that directors hide in their films to try and trick the hardcore fans, and often they’re a nod to the director’s favourite film. In this feature we’ve managed to group together some of the very best, so see how many you recognise.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)

As you surely already know, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg worked on the story for Indiana Jones’ first movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and there are a couple of hidden treats for Star Wars fans to find – mainly this nod to Lucas’ two favourite droids, who appear as hieroglyphics when Jones first discovers the Ark in the Well of Souls.

? ? ? ?

TOY STORY (1995)

It’s hard to believe that Toy Story is full of references to the super-dark horror film The Shining, but there are plenty dotted through the movie. Apparently it comes from director Lee Unkrich’s love of the Kubrick classic. Some are extremely subtle and very hard to spot, but this one, where the upstairs carpet to Sid’s house is an almost exact replica of the one from the Overlook hotel, is easy to notice.

IRON MAN (2008)

If you look closely at this scene in the first Iron Man movie then you’ll spot Captain America’s shield lying on Stark’s workbench. Given that the Captain almost certainly already had his shield when Stark became Iron Man, our guess is that maybe he was modifying it? Or maybe trying to use the super-tough adamantium in his Iron Man suit?

? ? ? ?

? ? ? ?

STAR TREK (2009)

Considering he’s the director of the new Star Wars film, it’s pleasing to hear that J.J. Abrams is an enormous Star Wars fan – to the extent that he sneaked in hard-tospot appearances from R2-D2 in both Star Trek movies. This one, from the first film, is a split-second cameo from when the Enterprise is under attack from Nero’s time-travelling ship.

FEATUREMOVIE SECRETS

TRON (1982)

Considering it was a film about the inner workings of a computer game, it’s not that surprising that one of the classic arcade games of its day, Pac-Man, managed to sneak into 1982’s Tron. Dotted around the scanner are plenty of power pills, along with an animated Pac-Man – complete with authentic sound effects, too!

PREDATOR 2 (1990)

The first Alien/Predator crossover happened in comic book form in 1990, the same year that Predator 2 was released. Although many slated the film, claiming it wasn’t a patch on the original, it did have its fans (this editor included) and it also sneaked in this sly reference to the Alien in the Predator’s trophy room on his ship. There, clearly displayed among many other skulls from his conquests, is the Predator’s prize catch.

STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999)

It was Spielberg himself that suggested to George Lucas that members of ET’s species made a cameo in The Phantom Menace, so three of them were put into the scene of the Galactic Senate.

? ? ? ?

? ? ? ?

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH (2005)

Even better, it’s just about possible to spot the Millennium Falcon docking on Coruscant in Revenge of the Sith. Given the time frame of the film though, it would very unlikely that either Han Solo or Lando would be piloting it, so who (or what) would have been flying the Falcon? Maybe we’ll find out the answer to that one in the Han Solo origins film.

FAST FIVE (2011)

Fans of the Fast and Furious franchise will know Han well, but many will only know him by his first name. The Korean driver does reveal his surname once though, in Fast Five, and those with sharper eyes and quicker brains will have spotted the obvious Star Wars pun to be found here – Han Seoul-Oh? Han Solo? Geddit?

? ? ? ?

? ? ? ?

FIGHT CLUB (1999)

Considering the fact that Fight Club is an odd (but brilliant) movie from start to finish, it’s no surprise that the hidden gem for this film is a strange one. In an interview, director David Fincher claimed that there is a Starbucks coffee cup in every scene, apart from the one in which a coffee shop is destroyed. Why? No idea, but it’ll take up hours of your life trying to find them all – we know, we tried.

DISNEY WORKING ON NEW MARY POPPINS FILM! Now the hunt is on to find the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious actor for the role

O

ne of the biggest surprises this month was the news that Disney are developing a new Mary Poppins musical with Rob Marshall (who impressed many with his directorial work on Into the Woods) set to direct. Disney have had enormous success recently with their updated versions of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland and clearly this is one entry in their back catalogue that’s ripe for an update.

26

widescreen

October 2015

This will be no reworking of the original though, as the plan is to set it 20 years after the first Mary Poppins film and use the original writer’s (P.L. Travers) series of books to continue the tale of the magical nanny. The first Mary Poppins film was released in 1964, starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, and was the story of a nanny who came to work for a banker’s unhappy family in pre-World War I London.

Studio chiefs are keen to relaunch the Charlie’s Angels franchise and the person they’re courting to direct is the star and director of Pitch Perfect 2, Elizabeth Banks. Given that she handled that film so well, we think she’s the perfect choice.

RELEASED

TBA The film was a huge hit, grossing around $100 million at the box office and won five Oscars – including one for Julie Andrews as Best Actress. While we’re not entirely convinced that it’s a good idea to meddle with such a classic, we’re fully aware that Rob Marshall is a master of the musical, so if anyone can pull it off then it’ll probably be him. The only remaining question still left unanswered though, is who will play Mary Poppins? Our money’s on Anne Hathaway.

Fans of the Pitch Perfect films will be delighted to hear that a third one is definitely happening – and has a release date of August 2017. Better still, all the stars of the first two films have already signed up.

To celebrate Back to the Future day on October 21 (it’s the date that they travelled forward to in the second film), Universal are releasing the movies on Blue-ray with a brand new short film starring Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown! The trailer for it is online now.

SOMETHING

WICKED THIS

WAY COMES Michael Fassbender explains to us the challenges of playing one of the most iconic roles ever created, Shakespeare’s Macbeth

On Shakespeare’s source material “We approached it with simplicity. We never tried to work against the verse or just disregard it, but we kept things simple and tangible, and the idea Justin (Kurzel, director) had from the beginning was to be a lot more intimate with the text than we’ve seen before, but always truthful.” Film with an army of battle re-enactors “Out of all the warriors that were on the field I think we only lost two. A lot of them were running around without shirts and it was bitter. I can’t explain to you how cold it was; it was the

end of January, and you had rain and flooding that was fairly intense. They were an amazing bunch of people.” Discussing Macbeth’s post-traumatic stress “Justin discovered early on that the character was suffering from PTSD, so he’s already having hallucinations and there’s a certain element of psychosis there that runs right through to the banquet scene. So that was obviously part of the man before the events of the play, and I thought that was a really helpful key into finding him, his reality and what’s going on inside his head.”

RISING STAR CARA DELEVINGNE This model-turned-actor has had an incredible year and is now rapidly rising up Hollywood’s A-List. Time to find out more about Cara.

C

ara Delevingne had her first acting role just three years ago, but she’s already gone on to star in two high-profile films this year (Paper Towns and Pan) and has a further five in development. But what is it about the 23-year-old British star that makes her the actor all directors suddenly want to hire? Possibly some of it is down to her sheer determination, and ability to master anything she turns her hand to. Cara began modelling at just 10 years old, but within a relatively short space of time she’d signed up to Burberry and was a regular feature on catwalks around the world. That clearly wasn’t enough for the ambitious Cara though,

and she’s also written and recorded two albums of music (she plays the guitar and drums and has a pretty good singing voice), designed two fashion collections for DKNY and recorded a song with Pharrell Williams. Cara is proof that stars can still be made overnight and plucked from obscurity, and after a range of positive reviews for her performance in Paper Towns, it’s clear she’s a new star that’s here to stay.

The hottest movie news, in bite-sized pieces

The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s superb robots versus aliens scrapfest, Pacific Rim, which was due out in 2017, has been ‘indefinitely delayed’. We’re keeping everything crossed that it’ll happen one day, though.

Considering the critical and financial success of the first film, it must surely come as no surprise that not only is John Wick 2 going to happen, but they’re already about to start filming it! Expect more action-packed mayhem next year.

STAR TRIVIA As well as all her other talents, Cara is a pretty good beatboxer, too! She comes from an upper-class English family, and one of her ancestors was the Mayor of London.

Danny Boyle recently revealed that the film he’ll be working on next will be Trainspotting 2. All the four main actors want to come back, so now it’s just a case of sorting out the schedules and it’s a goer.

TRAILPAERRK THE JUNGLE BOOK

TRAILER

A new feature for the magazine where we pick apart the latest trailers to bring you all the hidden details you might’ve missed.

1:06

One inhabitant of the jungle that’s definitely not friendly though is Kaa (Scarlett Johansson). Like the original, the snake tries to hypnotise Mowgli with the line: ‘Trusssssst in me’.

0:39

The trailer starts in dramatic fashion with Mowgli walking though a stunning waterfall. You immediately know from this that Jon Favreau’s version of The Jungle Book is very different to the one we remember.

When monkeys attack! Baloo (Bill Murray) and Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) are less than welcome in the palace of King Louie. My money’s definitely on the bear and the panther, though.

LATEST ON PROMETHEUS 2 Sir Ridley Scott spills the beans

W 1:21

Of all the creatures in the jungle for Mowgli to fear, none strike terror into his heart more than Shere Khan (Idris Elba). Avoiding this beast is a fulltime job for the boy – luckily he’s got Baloo to protect him.

JOHN BARRY

The beloved Bond composer usually shuns the limelight, but he cropped up in The Living Daylights playing, naturally, an orchestra conductor.

hile the first Prometheus made a point of (almost) staying away from the Alien universe it was spawned from, it would appear that the sequel, now officially titled Alien: Paradise Lost, is likely to fully embrace it. Speaking recently, Sir Ridley said that not only will the name have a solid link to the Alien films, but also that Paradise Lost will also have connections with Ripley. What they are, and whether or not that’ll link into Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel remains to be seen, but it’s all very exciting in the world of the xenomorph.

SAMMY DAVIS JR.

Sadly Sammy never made it into the final cut of Diamonds Are Forever but his small cameo can still be found among the deleted scenes.

IAN FLEMING

Debate rages on as to whether or not this character here in From Russia With Love is Bond creator Ian Fleming, but we like to think it is.

t's fair to say that writer Alan Bennett has had an interesting and colourful life, but what many people possibly didn't know about him is that in the late 1960s, a homeless person called Miss Shepherd moved her battered old van first into his street in Camden Town and, eventually, his driveway. Naturally, Bennett chronicled all this in a diary, which he then turned into a play in the 90s (which also starred Maggie Smith) and now, a film too. It’s fair to say that, initially, neither Miss Shepherd or Bennett himself are overjoyed with the prospect of sharing their space with each other, but the potential joy of this film is Bennett’s superb writing and the fact that he clearly has a deep affection for the woman who ended up sharing his life for decades. 

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST STARRING David Suchet, Emily Barber CERT 12A RELEASE 8th Oct (7pm) LENGTH 150 minutes Don’t miss celebrated actor and Poirot star David Suchet as the formidable Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s much loved masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, which is being broadcast live from London’s Vaudeville Theatre. Directed by Adrian Noble (Amadeus, The King’s Speech, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language. Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff (Philip Cumbus – a regular player at Shakespeare’s Globe) and the utterly reliable John Worthing J.P., (Downton Abbey’s Michael Benz) lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax (Emily Barber) and Cecily Cardew (Imogen Doel). The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions – and with the formidable Lady Bracknell.

The young peasant girl Giselle unfortunately dies when she learns that the man she loves, Albrecht, has betrayed her. Against her will, she joins the wilis, vengeful spirits who now turn against Albrecht and condemn him to dance until he dies of exhaustion. This romantic ballet is one of the oldest and greatest in the classical repertoire, touching upon the great Romantic themes: a doomed love affair ending in tragedy, a dive into fantasy, and ultimate redemption through the power of love.

COMMUNITYFEATURE A BLAST FROM THE PAST!

This month we focus on McCubbing and Redfern, a business in Wells that’s been trading since the 1940s!

A

llen Mechen has a varied and interesting job. Along with his partner Sarah, he’s the owner of the McCubbing and Redfern auction house in Wells, and every month they bring together an incredible selection of items for their sale – which is held on the third Wednesday of every month. Sometimes though, he’s called upon to sell something a little out of the ordinary… “Actually, a friend of mine from South America rang up today,” says Allen. “saying that he’s got some dinosaur fossils for sale and wanted to know if I was interested!” McCubbing and Redfern’s monthly auctions are very popular and are regularly packed out, but if you’re not able to make it to the auction house on the day then you’re still able to join in the fun, as if you head to www.the-saleroom.com you can bid on any piece online.

40

widescreen

And many do, as Allen and Sarah are happy to ship items all around the world, meaning that customers from as far away as Canada and China are now regular buyers. The couple bought the auction house 10 years ago but it’s actually been running in Wells since 1947, and Allen’s background in antiques and previous auction houses means that he’s got a keen eye for a hidden gem. They don’t buy any items though, and everything that’s on sale is done through a commission basis only.

Famous faces Local celebrities often visit on sale day (including April Walker, who appeared in Doctor Who in the 70s, and Nicholas Cage, who has a house near Glastonbury) and occasionally bring in a movie or TV-related item themselves to sell – autographed photos and film posters are regularly featured, and some furniture was purchased at an auction last year for director Guy Ritchie’s wedding! McCubbing and Redfern is an Aladdin’s cave of delights, and we recommend everyone should check out the next auction on the 21st of October to see if they can pick up a bargain for themselves.

Sally Cooper, the owner of the Wells Film Centre tells us all about her movie life Tell us about one of your favourite films I’m very fond of Dirty Dancing 2, and I actually like it as much as the first one. It seems like a really interesting story and I’d like to know which she chooses: New York or Ireland. I love a good period drama. What’s the best bit of your job? The customers, simply because we’re all very proud at the Film Centre to be able to offer such a brilliant range of varied films to the community, and I know that people do appreciate all the hard work it takes! I really enjoy the time I spend in the cinema and having hands-on time with the customers. Who would play you in your biopic?
