Family Friendly Things To Do
Hidden Treasures
By Chris Carter, Resident WriterThe nearby Delaware River boasts many unique and wonderful attractions along with art and culture and towns filled with charm And let us not be remiss by overlooking the rich history and spectacular wildlife that Bucks and surrounding Counties have to offer. One of these hidden gems just up the road from our communities is the Frenchtown Roller Rink.
The River Road ride is, in and of itself, a pleasure cruise, and cited as one of the most scenic drives in the country (so keep the kid’s electronics off and make them look out the car windows). The desired address of 2995 State Highway 29 (Frenchtown/NJ 08825) makes for mystery as Google Maps pegs the address at 2998 Daniel Bray Highway. Don’t drive too fast (you shouldn’t anyway!) or you will miss the stationary white car trailer with signage at the bottom of the long driveway indicating that you have reached your destination. This driveway leads uphill through woods and caps off to a large crushed-stone parking lot and the arena.
Once inside, the feel and vibe is like traveling back in time when roller rinks dotted cities up and down the East Coast There are no waivers to sign, no insurances to disclose, and the admission and skate rentals are incredibly and refreshingly reasonable, and “no frills” (cash only, however, or personal check; no credit or debit cards).
My family of five paid less than $30 00 for kids’ admission (adults are free with child purchases on select days) and for 3 quad rentals (2 of us brought our own in-line skates) on a Sunday 1-4 pm excursion. They have quad or in-line rentals for persons of every size and even skates and accessories to sell to the more devoted skater Unlike skiing, you can pay your ticket, secure your skates, and be about your business in a matter of minutes and maximize your activity time. And let me tell you, IT IS
FUN!
Familiar and unobstrusive, you “skate at your own risk” to popular music and some old favorites (Limbo, Bunny Hop, Chicken Dance). Literally entertaining for all ages, there are singles, families, and teenagers on dates all leisurely patrolling the rink while the disco ball turns. Lights come on and off and games are played, so whether you are a novice or an expert, there is pure enjoyment for all. Unless you monitor your Fitbit, you won’t believe how quickly the time “rolls” by…
Paul Pinkerton founded the Frenchtown Roller Rink in 1960 and the facility continues to be run by family members Kay Pinkerton is a fourteen-time national inline skating champion, and her nephew, Christopher Creveling, is an Olympic champion (2014 Winter Speed <Ice> Skating Silver Medalist + 2004 Gold at the Inline World Championships as well as Silver in 2007) He also holds the American 1000 meter record
John Joseph Merlin of Belgium is credited as being the inventor of the roller skate in 1760, but his entrance was less than graceful With metal (non-turning) wheels strapped to his feet at a London masquerade party, the unskilled Merlin crashed headlong into a mirror while playing the violin and seriously hurt himself. His design was finally perfected 100 years later when New Yorker James Plimpton created springs and “trunks” for his quad skates which allowed for turning and control in 1863 He went on to build the nation’s first roller rink in his furniture store and the rest as they say is history….
If you haven’t already benefitted from the experience (and this amusing look back on a colorful past-time), please take my advice and travel a short distance by yourself or with a group to a great local find I guarantee smiles at the affordable and entertaining Frenchtown Roller Rink which is available for parties, outings, events and even lessons. The Frenchtown Roller Rink can be reached at 908-9966313 and their website is www.frenchtownrollerrink.com. They also offer an on-site snack bar and arcade And while in Frenchtown, check out the local stores, restaurants and great Delaware River scenery. Thanks and enjoy!
For instance, Charlie Chaplin starred in The Rink in 1 which was the first film about roller skating In the 1 and 60s, shows like Happy Days and movies like Ame Graffitti epitomized roller skating’s popularity in culture with carhops. The Sonic restaurant chain, today, hosts an annual skating event among its 3 drive-in stores James Caan’s sci-fi thriller Rollerball out in 1975 and was updated with a new cast (in 2 Cher released Hell on Wheels in 1979 with accompanying music video, and Patrick Swayze and Baio starred in the movie Skatetown USA that same Roller derbies began and continue today. And yes, the Amish roller skate! Believe it or not, roller skates been employed by the Amish for decades as an altern mode of transportation. While elders approve of quad they discourage the younger generation from using in-line skates, which are deemed to be too flashy and fast.

YOGURT TREE ART DISPLAY
BY, OWEN CARTER JUNIOR WRITERStudents of local schools Cold Spring Elementary and Kutz Elementary displayed their many works of art at the Doylestown Yogurtree. The numerous paintings, portraits, and abstracts crowded the walls with color and personality, providing exciting examples of imagination and creativity. The frozen yogurt bar allowed customers and students alike to gather and enjoy the Doylestown Yogurtree all while admiring the colorful atmosphere.
Exclusively at these Central Bucks schools, Art Teacher Jennifer Swoyer organizes and arranges these yearly events, working with local businesses in the process. This year, the Doylestown Yogurtree, a family owned and operated frozen yogurt bar, displayed the vibrant works of art proudly in their central area.
With an upscale, café-like appearance, Yougurtree invites patrons to sample and indulge their sweet tooth with premium-tasting yogurt in either its Doylestown or Quakertown locations. Special thanks to owner Patty Walton for hosting the student artwork and congratulations to the participants for their achievement! (Some of the artwork was made by Hansell area artists Ryan Walker, Nolan Jacob, Michael Bliss, and Ryan Carter.)

The Lindsey Robinson Scholarship Fund
By Kimberly Robinson, Resident and mother of Lindsey RobinsonLindsey was a student at Central Bucks West HS and part of the Life Skills program. It is designed to give students with special needs the emotional and vocational skills needed to be productive members of our community. Lindsey herself had special needs and thrived in this program. Tragically she passed away on August 14th 2006 due to a sudden illness. Lindsey loved school and her community and because of this we couldn’t think of a better way to honor our daughter then to establish the Lindsey Robinson Scholarship Fund. It has been such privilege to receive and read the applications for our scholarship.
We have some amazing young men and women who dedicate their time volunteering and helping in our community. Last year’s recipient Sophia Vicenete discovered the concept of community service at the age of 7 through the girl scouts. She has continued her volunteer work with different organizations throughout her high school years.
She belonged to 4Hclub, collected food for the food pantry and put on a talent show for the retirement home. She spent the summer volunteering at the YMCA becoming a teen leader with a program called Achieve. Achieve is a weekly activity for children from ages 9-14 with disabilities. The purpose of this program is to help promote socialization, connection, character development and interpersonal skills through activities and play Sophia wrote in her essay that helping in her community has changed her perspective on her life and has helped her grow as a person.
Her philosophy is to make it a better place then you found it.
Through the scholarship fund we hope to do our part in giving back to the community through supporting the Life Skills program and the amazing students at CB West. You can make a donation to The Lindsey Robinson scholarship fund c/o PNC Bank PO Box 446 Buckingham PA 18912
Lindsey wasn’t a normal teenager she was an extraordinary one!!!

Beautiful Backyard Getaway Lisa & Rich Chase
When Lisa and Rich moved in 23 years ago, there was no landscaping; not a tree or bush. Rich and Lisa designed the backyard themselves. With the help of family members and with the exceptions of the pool and patio, did most of the work.

NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN
Written by Stephanie Shamp, feature writer Baci RistoranteTucked away behind a beautiful wall of blooming trees on Route 413 sits one of Bucks County’s trademark 18thcentury homes renovated in 1996 to become Baci Ristorante. This successful authentic Italian restaurant is as elegant as its food is delectable. Baci Ristorante and its bar, the Heart of Oak Pub, developed from the owner David Husenaj and his late wife’s entrepreneurial prowess and inspiration to open a restaurant all their own. I can say from atmosphere to entrée, everything about Baci speaks to the care and passion David has infused into his restaurant.
The community headed for a taste of Baci’s menu while admiring the interior of the restaurant, which embraces its 18th-century origins, with impressive polished wooden beams running across the low ceilings with classical masonry lining the walls were all complemented by thoughtfully placed seating arrangements
Our wonderful servers had already set up a table for us in the private room with a balcony as we sat down and talked. They deftly delivered the first round of appetizers to us I was particularly enamored with the baked clams with seared scallops, and calamari fritti both served with a delicious marinara sauce, but, though I was too full to sample it, I saw the cold antipasto with provolone cheese, thinly sliced prosciutto, salami, pepperoni, banana peppers, roasted red peppers, olives,
capers, and artichokes served over a bed of greens was a favorite among my fellow guests and all so beautifully displayed I almost didn’t want to eat them; however, the enticing smell of cod Franches--an egg battered cod served in a lemon white wine sauce--left me no choice and I had to break the design. The penne ala vodka was easily the most popular among our guests that went well with the chicken Scarpello
With all the options available from the catering menu alone, it’s obvious Baci has
considered a wide range of tastes even within its specialty, Italian cuisine. Baci Ristorante is a prime example of a restaurant lovingly created and cared for with an environment that reflects its owner's passion and promises a wonderful experience for its guests from start to finish
Baci is located at 2559 Bogarts Tavern Rd, Doylestown at the intersection of 202 and 413. Open Sunday through Thursday 4 P M to 10 P.M. and Friday through Saturday 4 P M to 11 P M
VETERANS CORNER
Music of the Vietnam War Era
By Bob Staranowicz, Resident WriterMusic is an inspiration to many of us. We remember the places we were, things we were doing and who we were with when we hear certain songs. A song can trigger a memory, a heartbreak or just a more serene time in our lives. Songs get stuck in our head and we find it hard to shake them. A new parent walks around unknowingly singing the Sesame Street theme song or some Barney verse. We are influenced by music and always will be.
Music has a great influence on our lives, whether you agree or not, and it will continue to spark memories and create new ones. As for the soldier, music was an outlet. Listening to a favorite song while in a battle zone can take you away from the war for a few seconds or a few minutes.
During the Vietnam War, so many songs were so important to so many who served. From the adopted theme song of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" to Country Joe and the Fish's who satirized being the "first one on your block to have your kid come home in a box." , no war ran the gamut of so many emotions from a total support of a war to a total rejection of it.
Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler, a Green Beret, had the top selling album of 1966 - "The Ballad of the Green Berets". It is one of the very few songs of the 1960s to cast the military in a positive light. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and young brought protest to light with a song about the killings at Kent State University -"Four Dead in Ohio." So many songs were brought to the troops on base camp and in the field through AFVN - Armed Forces RadioVietnam. Yet, AFVN did not become a popular listening station until one special airman decided that the men in the field needed to listen to a broadcast that made them feel like they were at home. he old format was replaced with a more contemporary format that became very popular with the troops thanks to Adrian Cronauer. Besides "We gotta get outta this place". The song that reminds me so much of my time in Vietnam is from the movie "Good Morning Vietnam”. Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World" will always remind me of my time in Vietnam. It may have not been very popular in my time there, but its influence in the movie makes it a very special lyric. I served in Vietnam in 1969-70. I have listed a few of the more popular songs of that time below and hope that if you served or were back home during that period, it will spark some happy memory for you.

Pet of the Month
This Article is Sponsored By: EcoFriendly Cleaning Services
Type of animal/breed: 1/2 Labrador and 1/2 Australian Shepherd mix
Male or female: Female
Pet’s age: 2 1/2 years old
Where/why did you get her?
We have always had labradors. Koda was rescued from a Southern High Kill Shelter. The people from Almost Home Dog Rescue in Doylestown, PA picked up her mom and 11 puppies and brought them to a foster home in Bethlehem, PA. She was one of the smallest of the litter.
Is there a story behind her name?
We liked the word Dakota which was shortened to Coda which, in musical terms, means “the end of something.” She will probably be our last dog and she is “The Last of the Best Dogs Ever.”
Anything special or unusual about her?
She loves swimming and retrieving. She likes chasing something into the water and diving for it. Trish has taught her several tricks; please, down, stay, come, sit, and stay. She will do anything for food.
What do you like best about Koda?
She is a really calm dog, loyal and loving. Her favorite person is a family member with food and sitting on their lap on “her” favorite recliner.
Any funny stories?
She loves to be in water. Wherever there is a puddle, Koda tries to get in it. That puddle could be in someone’s driveway, the park or a muddy hole in the yard. She spends a lot of time getting baths!
How spoiled is she?
Very! All of our other dogs were never allowed on the beds or furniture. However, she likes to sleep in our bed with a pillow.
What else should we know about Koda and/or how she has enriched your home/family?
Coda is the epitome of why you get a dog. She loves the grandchildren. She is a very faithful companion, obedient, calm, and well behaved. She is the perfect story for someone who wants to adopt a dog.
Do you have a pet and would like to share his/her story? Then email tom@superagentsmag.com to have them featured in the next available issue! Dogs, cats, horses, fish, and any other type of animals are welcome!

10 LIGHTING IDEAS
Great lighting ideas need to provide the right illumination for all of a room’s functions and allow changes of mood, too But lighting is a major feature of any room design, and it’s crucial that it plays its part in the aesthetic of the space, too.
From pendants and chandeliers to wall lights, floor and table lamps, plus lights for illuminating artwork, lighting stairs, and more, there is a wealth of choices that can elevate the room as well as act functionally
LIGHTING IDEAS
All the different lighting types – ambient, task, and feature – can be beautiful in their own right, and these lighting ideas tick the boxes for style as well as practicality.
1. BRING WARMTH TO A LIVING AREA
Prioritize the atmosphere of the living room when shortlisting lighting ideas. 'Warmth is the most important factor when lighting a living area,’ says Peter Legg, lead designer at där lighting.
This is a cozy space, so you want to feel enveloped and comforted while using it Aim for an even spread of light to avoid any harsh contrasts One way to do this is through an armed ceiling light or a chandelier which will rebound light across the room.'
Of course, living room lighting ideas should be carefully planned so that the effect created by the aesthetics of the light fittings in daylight is just as impactful as that of the lighting scheme itself at night
2. CHOOSE STATEMENT PENDANTS FOR THE KITCHEN
Kitchen lighting ideas, just like those of the living room, are as much in daylight as they are a functionality Consider boldly scaled p hang over a kitchen isla grabbing in their own ri lighting also makes the more of a feature of the If you’re concerned the block views through the room’s example and op clear glass Gold detail i echoes that in handles a stools and the faucet fo materials
3. ELEVATE A BATHRO
Turn up the dial-on dec space with a bathroom chandelier. ‘I always tell clients to invest in lighting,’ says Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design, who created this room ‘Bathroom lighting is a gamechanger The right chandelier or pendant can give you a major design moment, and make a space feel instantly elevated ’ Generally, bathroom ceiling lights don’t have to be damp-rated designs, leaving your choices wide open, but do bear in mind that some areas, like that over the shower, need lights suitable for the location. Choose lights rated for the particular area of the room, which is divided into zones for this purpose
4 ADD LIVING ROOM WALL LIGHTS
Don’t neglect the potential that living room wall lighting ideas have to offer. In this room, a symmetrical pair of wall sconces on the chimney highlights this feature of the room even when the fire itself isn’t lit. In pairs, or as single fittings, wall lights can make any part of the room inviting in this way They’re also a great solution for smaller spaces avoiding the need to give up floor or table space to a lamp
5 SELECT THE RIGHT BEDROOM LIGHTING POSITIONS
Bedroom ceiling light ideas should be carefully located in relation to the bed when realizing lighting ideas for the room.
‘It is best not to position any bedroom lighting over the top of the bed where your pillows are as this is too harsh when you are lying in bed,’ explains Shalini Misra, interior designer and founder of Shalini Misra and The Design Buzz ‘Placing an interesting, statement light in the center of the ceiling provides a great focal point and design interest in the room, especially if you are keeping a muted palette in the space ’
6. FALL FOR KITCHEN WALL LIGHTING
Make food preparation safe with adequate illumination for kitchen countertops. Kitchen wall lighting ideas can avoid the problem of working in a shadow, which can occur when lights are directly behind a person standing at the counter While linear LED lighting is an alternative, wall
2This design is made with geometric bone china tiles and Charlie says, ‘Bone china is an ideal choice, bringing a lovely softness of finish and a beautifully translucent glow This soft light is ideal for creating a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel instantly comfortable and relaxed.
9. USE LIGHTING TO ATTRACT THE EYE
Considered use of lighting can concentrate attention where you want it – this can be particularly useful for entryway lighting ideas and hallway lighting ‘In this entry, the ceilings extend to the third floor,’ says Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design ‘In an effort to make the area feel like a singular space, even though it was three stories high, we installed downlighting on the art It encourages visitors to keep focused at eye level versus looking up.’
10. CREATE TASK LIGHTING IN A HOME OFFICE
Home office lighting ideas needn't just be functional, so don’t just think table lamps provide light for a home office desk. A floor lamp can provide the even glow that‘s necessary to avoid eye strain and make for an elegant feature of the room, too It can also provide a wider pool of illumination for a shared desk

In high school, Kari worked for a family friend who was a chiropractor, which just so happened to be in a ReMax building Her father suggested she should look into real estate Though Kari was unsure about real estate at the time, with the generational pressure to attend college, she kept having run-ins with one of the relators who would come to adjust his back. As he kept pushing her to work for him, she finally agreed to work for him for a summer. That summer, Kari fell in love with real estate.
Kari shared her experience getting started that summer.
"So it was interesting. When I started working for him, I was about two weeks or so, and he told me he was going to Ireland for ten days, it's on you. This was when email was barely a thing. The MLS was on dialup, so I only had a little in terms of resources. I remember the lender he used at the time was this beautiful woman, classy, pulled together like a role model to me. And I was inspired. I wanted to be like her. And so that always stuck in my head. At that time, I wasn't licensed, and his buyer's agent didn't work out. I started to think, confident 19-year-old in college trying to figure life out, why not take the test?"
Kari passed her test and almost went inactive at one point, pursuing an accounting major that wasn't for her. She described her past as winging life, trying to find her fit, though she was always blossoming her traits as people skills.
Kari applied for a job at Longhorn Steakhouse, and though they were not hiring, they took a chance on her To this day, she stays in contact with some of her colleagues and regulars from Longhorn and speaks of them fondly as dear friends She describes the skillsets needed in the service industry, which directly transfer into her real estate agent skills. Going from her day job in real estate to her night shift at Longhorn grew her network exponentially and allowed her to help her sell countless houses from the friendships she built there.
At the time, her coworkers or bar patrons weren't future clients for Kari. Instead, they were friends, people she cared about, showcasing her ability to connect with people and create long-term relationships in and out of business
Kari is a natural at networking. She mentioned, "I was in a class today here at Keller Williams, and somebody said, 'How do you just go to a networking event and talk to people?' I'm like, everybody's in the same awkward position. Make fun of it. Hey, this is the awkward hello. You learn to talk to people you wouldn't normally talk to." This go-getter, dive-in attitude is a tribute to all the hard work she's put in over the years. Kari treats every real estate deal with detail-oriented respect, going above and beyond for her clients.

HOW IT'S GOING
Even stating, "I take a lot of pride in it, and I get myself in a bit of trouble going above and beyond. It is such a stressful process financially. Making the most significant decision of your life and moving, let's be honest, isn't fun. Then adding kids into it, buying and selling at the same time. I'm that person who will come to your house if you need a contractor. You don't have to take off from work. And yes, that means I am probably cutting myself out of another deal that I can be spending time going and finding. But it's more about the relationship and taking something off someone's plate because I work for them I don't work for the next person that hasn't signed up with me yet And I think that's where I differentiate myself a lot "
Her dedication to her client's efficient and smooth success in the settlement process truly makes her shine. However, this passion for real estate doesn't stop there.
Kari mentioned that she doesn't have kids, so she has extra time to fill her soul with friends and to study real estate trends, not only in her local market but across the country. In addition, networking with other relators in markets like L.A., Phoenix, and Vegas helps her be ahead of the game.
Kari is proof that you can be anywhere you want to be if you put in the work for it She's proof of that and is transparent in her struggles Her desire to help people move forward in the right direction and loves coaching.

In addition, Kari networks with other relators locally, exhibiting vast knowledge for her clients She stated, "I know what people in my office are doing. I network with them, but I want to see things that aren't ordinary here that I could influence in my business to make it better for our clients because we haven't seen that trend yet. So I take a lot of pride, and I take a lot of time to talk to other agents throughout the country."
She has an individual coach who has a roster with 30 people across the United States, and she has the privilege of having them as a network to lean on.
"For instance, somebody is getting divorced or has done something financially, made a poor decision, wants a career change, doesn't have a degree you know you can make that change at 30, 40, 50 years old and change your life in a year or two. And that's like one of my biggest things like I want to help those people. I want to show kids how to teach a Kids' class through Keller Williams called Quantum Leap. You know, 16 to 28-year-olds, they can apply for scholarships, but it's goal setting, financial responsibility, all sorts of things. So I get really passionate about those things, giving back I was even a firefighter if you can believe it "

Jeff spent 20 years building a career as a hospitality leader for a global hotel company. He ran hotels up and down the East Coast, across the South, and into the Midwest, which caused him to relocate often. Being a client on both the buyer and seller end brought him to becoming a realtor
As life transitioned, Jeff moved back to the North East and realized he had valuable insight into the buying and selling process as he experienced the good and the bad.
Jeff found he had acquired skills that transferred into real estate from the hospitality industry.
He did tons of analysis work, stating, "Those hotel rates that change will fluctuate aren't magic and aren't arbitrary. It's very calculated, and there's a lot of analysis and that translates perfectly into real estate and understanding markets and market conditions and how things behave. So when I looked at that and was able to couple that with my customer service and hospitality background, real estate was a match made in heaven."
He has experience in a surplus of markets such as New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Dallas, Texas, Oklahoma, and South East Pennsylvania. However, he is licensed in PA and NJ; there is an incredible real estate referral network where he still has opportunities to help.
Relationships and customer service in the Real Estate industry are crucial to success, and Jeff prides himself on both. His experience on both sides offers his clients a unique perspective, especially when surprises arise. Jeff believes that problems in real estate can be especially monumental, and with a good agent, most of the surprises can be avoided and addressed before they become an issue

how it's going
Jeff is the Office Manager for the Re/Max Blue Bell location with about 45 agents averaging about 15 to 20 transactions a year. He stated, "Our network and resources are vast, and our training is second to none. It's an ever-evolving, ever-changing market. Real estate school doesn't prepare a realtor to be an effective agent in the field. It's experience, it's training, it's coaching. And we do a lot of coaching here in-house."
"One of the analogies I often make is that we're talking about a house, right? This is huge. It's semipermanent as far as what we're doing. If you go to a restaurant and you order a meal, and you're just not happy with it, not because they've done something wrong, just because it didn't suit you or it wasn't your taste. You could send it back and have them prepare another meal. Or you know what? You suck it up. But the next day, you go back, and you go back to your tried and true, and you get what you like. This is a house. You can't be in the house for a week or two and then wake up and say; I don't know that this is the right thing. You know, I'm going to trade it in. You know, there's no 90-day warranty on this where you get your money back. So we need to do the right things upfront to make sure we're vetting things and making sure that we're doing it personally and for you. Because what's important to you is different than what's important to the next person and the next person."
