summary

HERTSMERE COMMUNITY SPACES PROJECT

About the Hertsmere Community spaces project. The project began back in Summer 2007 when Hertsmere Borough Council consulted local young people across Hertsmere about their needs. Young people said that they really wanted places to meet and ‘hang out’ in the borough and the council identified three areas where there was a particular need for this. The young people were also given the opportunity to sketch their ideas for the kind of space or ‘shelter’ they would like to see. In Autumn 2008 the council was granted just over £50,000 for the community spaces project, along with additional money for other ‘play’ initiatives through an application to the Big Lottery Play Programme. In May 2009 Superblue design Ltd were approached to be the design team for the Hertsmere community spaces project. 1. Consultation process

2. Funding Process

This documents contains the design concepts develop for the Furzefield. The concepts have been created by gathering further local knowledge at the engagement event days. Via this approach the design of the shelters are able to be developed in a well considered approach that takes into regard the site, content, context and community.

introduction

HERTSMERE COMMUNITY SPACES PROJECT

Furzefield Park is a unique site which sits is at the back of the Furzefield Leisure site. It consists of King George V playing field, Furzefield woods, an ancient woodlands and a Meadow area, which Potters Bar Brook runs through. Furzefield Wood and Meadow, managed by the Countryside Management Service (CMS), was designated a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) by Hertsmere Borough Council in September 1998. The playing field unique feature are three mature oak trees. This run in a line and are the remains of an old hedgerow. Unlike the other parks in the Hertsmere Community Spaces project this park is not huddle by a community and only has houses on the east side. On the south side is the leisure center and parking. However the leisure center does not face the park and turns away from it which creates an usual relationship with the leisure centre as well as hides the park. On the west side of the park there are open fields and from the south side of the park (at the back of the leisure centre you are able to gain a view due to the topography of the land. Existing provisions at Furzefield: • Skateboard Park - east of the leisure centre • Other door sport facilities - Astroturf • Football pitches • Play area - west of the leisure centre. Within King George V playing fields lies a number of football pitches and a skateboard park. The skateboard park attracts many users and is in constant use - however it can have a dominate effect within the space of the park. The skateboard park has been recently expanded and part of the Hertsmere Community Spaces brief was to provide another provision to other park users. At present there is no shelter for the park and in bad weather users of the park take refuse in the balcony area on the east side of the leisure centre. However due to future developments this will not be available. Please note that for future developments on the leisure centre it would be worth to consider allowing the leisure center to face the park and embrace it- not only would this give beautiful views it would help with security as the park will be over looked. Furthermore it would people aware of the park and add value to the place. The future development on the balcony and considered café area could be an opportunity to allow this to happen. Other places that are used in bad weather for shelter is the younger children play area at the front of the centre. The Hertsmere Community Spaces project is looking to create a space that works with the space, community and context of the area. This space looks to provide a form of shelter that is for all weather – sun in the summer, wind, rain. Along side this it is a space that adds value as it aims to be visually stimulating, intriguing and relevant to the users - as a meeting space, for picnics or for reflection. This allows people to enjoy outdoor public spaces in all weather.

Access to the park For local users the park is accessed by the side entrances The central entrance is used by people arriving by car - this tended to be visitors to the skate park. A number of these visitors are first time users. Dog walkers - one main user group tended to enter the park by the side entrances and walk around the edge of the park - denoted by the yellow dashed line on map. If crossing the park the dog walkers tended not go near the leisure centre but cross between the two trees denoted by the yellow dotted line. Sight Lines Sight lines from other areas in the park are shown. 1. Play area 2. Skate Park 3. Wood exits

Spaces within the park have to be consider for all of the year and all weathers. This illustration shows how the light is moving around the space. The shelter will offer spaces for shelter from the sun throughout the day as well as natural lighting from all sides

HERTSMERE COMMUNITY SPACES PROJECT

existing park photos

Furzefield has great panoramic views, but this also means that it can be very windy and exposed. The strongest features are the 3 large oaks which mark the line of an old hedgerow, as well as the rear of the leisure centre. People naturally meet and gather under the shelter of the trees. The football pictures dominate the flat lower space and other more sheltered sites around the periphery are distant from entrance ways. A fairground is periodically positioned on the flat plateau immediately behind the leisure centre. A formal play space is positioned on the western edge of the leisure centre. The woodlands to the north are used as a pathway to housing and the industrial estate beyond as well as the meadow area.

materials

The climbing strip will be constructed from a powder coated steel so it is robust and maintainable. The shelter shareds can be made from kiln dried European oak wood so the space is warm to the touch and for seating. A play rubber surface could be used for the surrounding area and can be planted to sympathetically to place it in the old hedgerow.
