# Editorial Dear readers, For most of the history of photography, black and white photography was a photographer’s only choice for taking pictures. Later color film became a more popular choice for photographs, causing black and white photography to decline in popularity. However, photographers are rediscovering the power and timeless nature that black and white film can lend to photos. For our SUPERIOR ONLINE November issue we have chosen seven EDITORIALS which, we think, prove this statement. To complete our black & white edition for #SELECTION we detected three fabulous labels during Paris Fashion Week - Rosa Maria, Seth Sobek and Rigards - that play with the 'black & white theme' by presenting their accessories.
Our #STORY presents the artist Roland Schappert who plays with the language on different media very often in black & white. Enjoy the SUPERIOR ONLINE November 2012 issue and see how multifaceted BLACK & WHITE can be ... Tom & Marc

SELECTION IN NOVEMBER FROM PARIS BY SIMON
ROSA MARIA — For those who haven’t met Lebanese jewellery designer ROSA MARIA yet: She was born in Beirut during Lebanon’s Golden Era and has been since her youth fascinated with the old antique jewellery that her parents collected over many years of travel. As a long-time partner at Beirut’s IF Boutique, with its selection of avant-garde clothing and accessories, ROSA MARIA started making clothes and accessories for fun. When she decided to follow her passion and develop her own line of jewellery on a professional basis in 1998 it was clear from the beginning that the result would mirror her own very original personal style of mixing various elements in an unconventional manner.
ROSA MARIA'S creations are made from a mix of silver, gold, zinc and copper combined with a wild array of stones, such as rose-cut diamonds in different colors, rubies, sapphires, tourmalines and topaz. The raw, organic shapes of her rings give wearers endless possibilities for adding more styles each season and combining them with one other. “It is like a puzzle with someone putting the bits together to create different combinations,” explains ROSA MARIA. We should warn you: It’s hard not to become addicted! Sooner than you expect, all your fingers will be covered with the precious, wild mix of ROSA MARIA'S creations… www.rosamariajewellery.com

The name of their line, SETH SOBEK, is composed of the names of two ancient Egyptian gods. Seth was the god of chaos, of the desert, of all things wild and natural, whereas Sobek was the god of the Nile, the crocodiles. Together, Seth and Sobek stand for the symbiosis of the materials used in the collection: rough, wild textures meet strong sleek leathers.
For Fall/Winter 2012/13, they launched the debut collection with Perch skin details as intricate eye-catchers. »For winter we wanted to work with an exotic skin that features a roughhewn surface, a material that has nothing delicate or dainty about it, to create a bold and unique statement,« explains the design team, adding: »For Spring/Summer 2013 we chose a more delicate material. The emphasis is on handmade craftsmanship applied to simple products using honest materials. The designs are original and nonconformist yet respectful of vintage influences, intended for discerning folks with a solid sense of authenticity and independence. Each pair is painstakingly handcrafted by a single artisan from start to end, and finished with the trademark ›Sanjuro‚ surface treatment executed entirely by hand. Both European and Asian fits are offered to provide maximum comfort for different face shapes. There really is nothing out there remotely like RIGARDS frames.

Many designer glasses are produced in their thousands, but RIGARDS’S are made in their ones. RIGARDS frames are constructed of horn, a sustainable natural material that is lightweight, biocompatible (its low likelihood to cause irritation is worth mentioning), and beautiful to look at. The horns used are an organic by-product of water buffalo rearing on small African farms and reflect RIGARDS’S desire to make recycling a part of our culture. Handpicked for their color, grain and thickness, each piece of horn is meticulously paired with the design that best accentuates the inherent traits of the horn. www.rigards.com

ROLAND SCHAPPERT # The artist ROLAND SCHAPPERT works directly with language, translations, tipping points and the identifications of meaning. The viewer becomes a reader, who exposes himself to various experiential possibilities. He is not only an integral part of the artwork, but is also constantly challenged to make his own decisions. It is thus important for the artist that the recipient finds himself in a state of constant movement, both physically and intellectually. Schappert's lightreflecting metal paintings and canvases, which reveal more or less information depending the viewer’s physical standpoint, create a kind of matrix in space. The exhibition can thus also be understood as a site-specific installation, or as a visual text or even an open stage play, albeit without any form of linearity and freed of any predetermined story line.

# With this open relationship between image and language, the artist also addresses not least of all the question of the possibility of communication within art in direct connection with forms of communication found in everyday life, especially with regard to questions of values and belief. ›YOU CAN TRUST ME / I KISS ONLY SINGLES AND REMAIN WITH YOU‹ is, for example, the title of one painting, which is barely legible at first sight. In the words of the artist: »My work is not based on the belief that a well intended genuflection to the remains and heroes of the Modern Era could result today in an adequate form of communication, which would somehow be capable of capturing the feelings and interests of the present age. Instead, it should be questioned whether every relationship and every statement is not actually only an alibi – for quick recognition, image building and apparent security. What remains, without trying to be hopelessly romantic, is a great sense of trust – trust that we do indeed intend to seriously question our own feelings and opinions, as well as the small bit of longing for that one thing that will hold it all together.« Text by GÉRARD A. GOODROW
