In this article, I'm going to go over the different parts of the nose and the roles that they play to an artist trying to draw the nose.
Once again, a huge part of being able to draw something is to be familiar with its parts. So lets begin this tutorial on how to draw the nose by going over the different part of the nose. The four different parts of the nose include: The keystone, the nose bridge, the ball of the nose, and the nostrils.
The Keystone: This is the area where the nose meets the forehead and eyebrows and it is one that many beginners miss. You do not draw the keystone area per say; it is more of a negative space. But it is important that you shape the eyebrows and the area around it to show this keystone shape.
The Nose Bridge: The bridge make up most of the height of the nose and connects the keystone area to the ball of the nose. The key thing to remember about the bridge is that it is not a straight line. Instead it widens at the middle area and then narrow in as it approach the ball of the nose.
The Ball of the Nose: The ball of the nose looks the way its name implies – like a ball. It is a round shape that attaches to the bridge.
The Nostrils: Planking the ball of the nose are the nostrils. The nostrils are the most expressive part of the nose and it is mostly where we can differentiate one nose from the other. You should play close attention when drawing the nostrils as it is the part that gives the nose most of its characters. It is important to remember that the nostrils aren’t circles, instead it look more almond shape.
It is also interesting to notice that the flatter the nose bridge, the wide the nostril will be. Whereas the higher the nose bridge sticks out from the face, the thinner the nostril will be. This is good to remember when drawing faces of different races.
The Key to Drawing Realistic Looking Noses The key to drawing realistic looking noses is to avoid lines. The nose has very few hard lines to speak off. Most of its definition comes from shadows that are cast by its three dimensional structure. Therefore shading is very important when drawing noses. To avoid hard lines and create the realistic shades and shadows of the nose, hold you pencil at and angle as you draw. The more horizontally you hold your pencil the lighter the shade will be. Just as with everything else, drawing the nose takes practice. Don’t be discourage if your first few drawings doesn’t come out the way you want it to. Just keep at it and I guarantee that you will see the improvements that you are after.
