Summary: Drawing lips can be one of the hardest part of drawing people faces; partly because it is one of the most expressive feature of the face. In this article, I'm going to outline some helpful tips for drawing lips that you can use to improve your drawings.

The lips is the second most expressive feature on the face and it is also one that is very easy to get wrong. In this post I’m going to tell you about some of the key features of the lips and some common mistakes that you should try to avoid when drawing the lips. Helpful Tips to Help You Draw Better Looking Lips: Lips Drawing Tip #1: If the lips are slightly parted, be sure to show a little of the 2 upper front teeth. Some artist miss this crucial little details and it makes their drawing look really weird. Lips Drawing Tip #2: All lips have a slight curve in the middle of the upper lip. How deep or shallow this curve is will determined how thick the lip is. For example, a full lip will have a more pronounced curve and a thinner lip will have a shallower curve. Don’t make the mistake of drawing a thin lip with a deep curve. Lips Drawing Tip #3: The top lip is usually slightly thinner than the bottom lip. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, so you shouldn’t follow it blindly. But if you keep this rule in mind, you’ll have a much easier time deciding how big to draw your lips (relative to each other). Lips Drawing Tip #4: Shading can do wonders for how realistic your lips look. Don’t just shade the entire lip on dark shade. Add some variation to it. If you are not very good at shading yet, just do this simple trick. Shade the entire lip a dark tone while leaving a small circular white spot at around the middle area of the lower and upper lip. This will make the lips pop and appear much more three dimensional. Lips Drawing Tip #5: Do not darken the outline around your lips. This only highlight the lips in a bad way and make it look fake. If you must darken the edges of your lips, make sure to do the same to the rest of your drawing so that the lips doesn’t stand out.

Lips Drawing Tip #6: If you draw a pair of lips by themselves it can look pretty boring on a face, so be sure to add in the surrounding details. Add the slight wrinkle that you see at the bottom of the lower lip, the creases at the corners of the mouth, the smile lines from the nose to the corners of the lips. All these things will make your lips look much, much more life like and interesting to look at.
