his year, the senior care landscape will be marked by technology. From bio wearables to innovation in health tracking tech. Poised to play a pivotal role in proactive health, these devices will improve management and provide more patient-centric healthcare. Advances to improve medical records management will enable easier information sharing and give more informed multi-specialty care.

Bio wearables or health trackers in senior care tech constitute the most significant and fastest-growing market worldwide. These devices are vital in enabling older adults to know about potential health issues. Post-COVID, people are more conscious than ever about their health, lifestyle, immunity, and overall well-being. Bio wearables are at the core of preventive wellness,

collecting vital health information such as blood pressure, sugar levels, heart rate, electrical activity of the heart and sleep cycles. This data is then analysed for better diagnosis and personalised therapies.

The maintenance and coordination of medical records can be challenging, resulting in incomplete healthcare histories. Bio wearables are able to close the gap and enable healthcare professionals to access real-time health data, creating a more accurate and comprehensive medical history.

AI, technology and holistic care are key drivers in senior healthcare, enabling innovative collaborations between technology, patients and care facilities. Senior care technology trends are improving yearly, helping seniors with devices like bio wearables and

health tracking devices are instrumental in this shift. Being able to collect and share health data regardless of location enhances the continuity of care and facilitates more comprehensive medical histories and diagnoses.

In the coming year, the intersection of technology and wellness is poised to revolutionise senior care. The amalgamation of telehealth technology, smart sensors, wearable health devices, and advanced emergency care notification systems promises to reduce doctor visits for our seniors.

DIFFICULTY OR DISINTEREST IN FOOD

Researchers tell us that 95 percent of seniors are grappling with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. It's a concerning statistic highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures to improve the health and wellbeing of the elderly population.

With weaker taste buds and sedentary routines, older bodies are less likely to signal the hunger response. Senior adults tend to eat less due to the natural decrease of taste buds and a reduced sense of smell. These changes make meals less enjoyable, gradually leading to a disinterest in food.

Adults 60+ also tend to have more sedentary lifestyles. This decline in physical activity means that their bodies do not use up as much energy, affecting the daily food they need. Sometimes, poor eating habits result from other medical conditions that older individuals are more prone to. For instance, elderly individuals may eat less due to poorly fitted dentures or pain while chewing or swallowing.

For seniors, adopting a nutritious diet can offer many benefits and can serve as a cornerstone for managing

chronic conditions, boosting immune function, maintaining cognitive health, and promoting longevity. Fortunately, emerging studies shed light on a simple yet powerful solution: by incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, along with whole foods, into their diets, seniors can potentially enhance their health outcomes.

Chronic diseases among older adults means that prioritising nutrition becomes paramount in mitigating health risks and enhancing quality of life.

Nutrient-rich foods support various bodily functions and ward off disease. Whether it's the vibrant colours of leafy greens, the sweetness of berries, or the crunch of bell peppers, each bite offers a potent dose of nutrition that contributes to optimal health.

Whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, and seeds are excellent sources of essential nutrients, providing sustained energy and promoting satiety. By prioritising heavily processed alternatives, seniors can avoid excess sugars, unhealthy fats, and additives that may exacerbate health issues and contribute to weight gain.

Embracing a diet rich in fresh, whole foods can profoundly affect seniors' mental and emotional well-being as well as improve physical outcomes. Eating nutritious meals can instil a sense of vitality and vitality, fostering a positive outlook on life and enhancing overall mood. Moreover, sharing meals with

others cultivates social connections that fosters a sense of belonging, a crucial aspect of healthy ageing.

Despite the clear advantages of healthy eating, many seniors need help adopting and maintaining nutritious dietary habits. Swallowing challenges, mobility issues, and changes in taste and appetite are just some of the factors that can hinder older adults' ability to eat well.

Facilitating social dining opportunities has been shown to increase the amount of food seniors eat dramatically, empowering them to take more interest in their diet and the food presented to them.

Nutrition in healthy ageing and taking proactive steps to support seniors in making dietary changes can pave the way a higher quality of life. Y

LIGHTING FOR ALL SEASONS

Outdoor spaces can be used at all times of the day, be it for morning sunrise or alfresco dining at night. In order to utilise a space to its full potential, lighting is key.

Sufficient lighting can improve visibility for residents, allowing them to easily read, see what is in front of them, and navigate the space around them. This will also enhance the safety and security of residents and staff, reducing the likelihood of accidents. The right lighting could even affect how residents perceive their meals if dining outdoors.

Outdoor spaces that are well-lit are also more inclined to attract potential residents passing by. A well-lit exterior is inviting for residents and an opportunity to showcase the village’s grounds and buildings.

Outdoor lighting will allow a village to operate at extended hours of the day. This will be invaluable to villages, especially a larger amount of new residents have made the move to aged care in recent years.

Ambient lighting has the ability to play to the strengths of any village. Pairing lighting to the overall theme of a village is the first step to make the

14 2024 BUYER'S GUIDE FURNITURE+DESIGN

space feel inclusive and an addition to resident living areas. Ambient lighting can match the village’s existing colour scheme, match the interior designs, or highlight architectural features on the building’s exterior. Suspended lights, such as festoon lights, have become increasingly popular internationally, and provide a vibrant atmosphere.

Choosing the right style and design of ambient lighting is crucial for each village. Lamps are a popular choice for table lighting or overhanging lamps for reading, as they provide sufficient light and can be themed to the existing interior decor. Battery-operated LED lamps have become a trending sensation for overseas village dining areas, with no electrical cords getting in the way. Tealight or oil candles in outdoor spaces are another effective look, especially when housed in tall glass vases. LED candles are another trending design feature, with no risk for safety measures.

Overhead lighting can be challenging.

Choosing the right light fixtures, style, height, and brightness can require a lot of consideration. For outdoor spaces, overhead lighting is determined by structures already in place. Pergolas and canopies can be used to fix lighting, or if this is not an option, wall lighting attached to the establishment’s exterior is just as effective. Be cautious of conflicting weather conditions that may affect the experience of an outdoor space. Avoid low-hanging lights that can be swung; instead, follow international trends of lighting bars, led strips, and secure outdoor lanterns.

Track lighting has become another ideal lighting solution for villages that need flexibility. Mounted to a track system, this cost-effective installation will enable direct light to specific areas as needed. Track lighting comes in a variety of different options, from individual light bulbs and heads to long LED beams. Track lighting can be functional, as well as versatile when needed.

As each season has different hours of light, consider appropriate lighting that can be used year-round. Modern technology can adapt to each seasonal theme, such as a new colour palette to match a menu, or interior decor. As resident units may not always have an outdoor living space, a communal area can be an effective choice that will make the space feel like a continuation of their unit.

Lighting can be one of the most essential elements for outdoor spaces. With new trends coming and going, having the right lighting for year-round activity will ultimately maximise any outdoor space. Y

WĀNAKA’S NEWEST RETIREMENT VILLAGE

Metlifecare has received approval to build a retirement village in Wānaka. The Queenstown Lakes District Council has granted resource consent for the project, which will cost approximately $200m.

16 2024 BUYER'S GUIDE FURNITURE+DESIGN

Within the Three Parks development at Lake Wānaka, the 5.42-hectare site will be transformed into a premium retirement village with around 95 independent living villas and 30 premium care suites, catering for roughly 150 residents.

Metlifecare Senior Development Manager Michelle van Kampen is leading the project and was excited to receive the green light to develop this site. It is a significant step towards intended construction at one of New Zealand’s most desirable locations.

“Wānaka is renowned for its stunning natural scenery and access to some of Aotearoa’s best outdoor and alpine activities, which our future residents will have at their front doorstep.”

Earthworks for the first stage, including construction of 30 twoand-three-bedroom villas, will begin later this year. The first residents are expected to move in by 2026.

“We’re eager to start progressing with the detailed design phase. Our vision is to create a unique village that perfectly balances tranquillity, community, and outdoor splendour.”

The second stage will follow shortly after and will feature the construction of the main amenities building and care home, which is set to open in 2027.

The village will include all the usual facilities that Metlifecare residents enjoy, including café and dining areas, indoor/outdoor areas for socialising, a library, and a health and wellness spa with a heated indoor swimming pool,

spa, and gym facilities.

“We’ll be engaging high-end architectural and landscape designers to create beautiful buildings and outdoor areas that will honour their natural surroundings and maximise the site’s expansive views across Mount Iron to the northeast and Cardrona Valley to the mountains to the west.”

Metlifecare’s acquisition of this site in April 2022 marked its entry into the South Island as part of its five-year growth strategy.

The company has purchased two premium retirement villages in Christchurch and recently acquired Springlands Lifestyle Village in Blenheim. Y

SHADE SOLUTIONS

Shade from the sun, shelter from the rain.

In countries such as New Zealand, it is wise for aged care villages to prepare for year-round weather, not just what’s on the menu, but for unexpected weather events.

The past year has forced many aged care establishments to batten down the hatches on more than one occasion, often catching owners, staff and customers off guard.

To face facts, residents do not want to sit outside in the pouring rain, and

strong wind swells can make outdoor recreation unpleasant. Even in the baking hot sunshine during the peak of summer, there is a need for a covering. There is now a strong demand for aged care villages to create a suitable environment and embrace shade and coverings.

Patio season is one of the most popular times for residents to spend more time outdoors. This is mainly a summertime event, so providing a relaxing environment for all residents is vital. Pergolas are the best fit for an alfresco atmosphere, providing shade throughout the day and a form of shelter at night. To enable year-round use of outdoor spaces, investing in a sturdy Pergola is key to generating the most use of the space.

Pergolas are made in various shapes and sizes, meaning there is a perfect match for the needs of each village. For a permanent fixture, pergolas made from wooden or metal materials are often the most popular choice, with recycled plastic structures also trending overseas. Permanent structures can also be tailored to a specific area, utilising the most spaces possible, whereas portable pergolas are typically square or

24 2024 BUYER'S GUIDE EQUIPMENT

rectangularly framed.

Wooden pergolas and canopies create a laid-back and coastal dining environment. Be it painted or the modern naturally-stained look, wooden structures are dependable, traditional, and suitable for all seasons. Metal pergolas and canopies provide a polished look and create the best look for urban dining locations. Both wooden and metal pergolas are available in portable options, meaning businesses have more opportunities to be flexible with layout and space; meanwhile, permanent structures provide a stronger formation and have a longer lifespan.

Umbrellas are a traditional choice for outdoor spaces without having to invest heavily. Christian Oertel of Shade 7 said that smaller centre-pole umbrellas are the most popular among restaurant owners.

“They are light, very durable and are often used through tables or freestanding on bases. Larger, more permanent commercial umbrellas are also highly desired,” said Oertel.

“Our largest and strongest commercial umbrellas are the tempest umbrellas. These umbrellas are a permanent shade and rain protection solution that doesn’t

require council consent, are removable for events, etc. They are also a great way to add more usable outdoor floor space.”

Ceilings and roofing are essential for a canopy to gain year-round use. The right shade and wind resistance level are determined by the structure’s location and exposure to sunlight. Canvas roofing is an effective choice to allow sunlight to shine through. Canvas is not only lightweight but has the ability for air to breathe through.

Permanent roofs are another innovative solution, especially for rain shelters and wind thoroughfares. Louvre ceilings have trended internationally for their ability to shut during rain and open for natural light, whilst also a useful source of shade. Louvre ceilings, usually aluminium, have been a popular choice for aged care facilities internationally.

Transparent panels are another innovative solution, especially without manual requirements when it rains. Tinted panels allow residents to enjoy the natural light without any interference from harsh sunlight. They can act as a conservatory off the main building and still offer an indoor-to-outdoor flow experience for customers.

Curtains on pergolas have surged

in popularity in Europe and provide a luxurious coastal touch for residents. As many outdoor curtains are made using lightweight materials such as chiffon and calico, there are opportunities for villages to incorporate their branding through details such as colour, piping, or tie-backs.

Roller blinds have also been used on pergolas, providing shade when needed. Using a roller blind allows a custom length depending on sunlight exposure and often has tracks fitted to the main pergola frame.

A pergola requires an even surface, preferably a sturdy material like concrete, tiles, or wood, which prevents any structure from collapsing, provided it is secured tightly.

Shade coverings are essential to making an outdoor dining area desirable to customers, especially when available for use across all seasons. This will create a multi-use area for all residents to enjoy, in any type of weather and at all times. Y

Review Laundry Protocols Regularly

In clinical settings, the management of linen serves a dual purpose: to maintain clean linen until it reaches the resident and to prevent contamination from soiled linen to residents, staff, and the environment.

Providing laundry services is a fundamental aspect of daily care, encompassing tasks such as washing bedsheets, towels, personal clothing, and staff uniforms.

The state of a resident's clothing often reflects to visitors the quality of care provided, offering a means of expressing individuality amidst the challenges of ageing.

Moreover, laundry and linen can harbour harmful pathogens, posing a significant risk to vulnerable aged care residents with weakened immune systems. Proper washing and storage procedures are essential to infection prevention strategies in healthcare facilities.

Regulations and policies govern the handling of linen and laundry in Australia and New Zealand, emphasising the importance of adhering to hygiene standards to

mitigate infection risks. Aged care facilities, due to communal living arrangements and residents' varying care needs, present unique challenges for laundry management.

The laundering process in healthcare settings involves mechanical, thermal, and chemical actions to disinfect items, although it's important to note that laundered items are not sterile. Safety measures when handling soiled linen include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), avoiding cross-contamination, and practising proper hand hygiene.

Laundry guidelines to minimise risk recommend using leak-proof bags, avoiding overfilling laundry bags, and adhering to standard precautions for infection control. These precautions include routine measures such as hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and safe handling and disposal of sharps and waste.

Maintaining high standards of laundry hygiene is essential for the health and well-being of residents, staff, and visitors. Adhering to regulations, following proper procedures, and implementing infection control measures are critical in safeguarding against spreading infections. Laundry protocols should be reviewed regularly. Y

Tracey Edwards

Located along the Tauranga coastline, Metlifecare’s Pāpāmoa Beach Village has found a rising star among its kitchen team.

Tracey Edwards started her career as a kitchen hand at Metlifecare’s Somervale Villiage in 2017, and has developed a deep passion for the culinary arts.

Edwards said that she has always known the basics of cooking, but has gained creative and inventive skills throughout her position. She added that she is keen to hone her skills further.

In recognition of her accomplishments in the kitchen, Edwards was offered the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities to her role, which saw her transition from a kitchenhand to a more involved position. This enabled her to gain more experience in a cooking-based role, and more time spent in the kitchen.

The new position meant she could take on new culinary challenges and work on her technique as well. Backed with the support of her team and the Pāpāmoa Beach Village, Edwards began on-the-job training in 2021.

“Learning while being on the job was awesome. I’m a hands-on learner so that really supported my learning style, and what made it easier was the team I had around me too,” said Edwards.

This experience allowed Edwards to thrive in a practical environment, as well as learning a deeper understanding of cooking methods and how a commercial kitchen operates. This was also an opportunity for Edwards to fine-tune her skills in the kitchen.

Following her two years of training, Edwards has become a fully qualified chef.

“I’ve had so much support from the team and being mentored by our kitchen manager, Stephen Barry, has been fantastic. He’s a bit of a legend around here so it’s great to be learning from the best.”

Since gaining her qualification, Edwards has showcased a range of different styles and cuisines for the residents at Pāpāmoa Beach Village. She said that the feedback has not only improved her skills, but has left her glowing. Pāpāmoa Beach Village Manager, Polly Delfim said that there are constant compliments from residents about Edwards’ culinary creations.

“It’s not often a day passes by that I don’t have someone knock on my door to tell me about the fantastic food coming from our kitchen. Residents love everything from the extravagant meals at themed dinner nights, to the simple delights of fish and chip Friday’s – there’s a lot of love coming out of the kitchen here.” Y
