Influencer Fatigue
It's not new for me to complain about influencers, but here I am again. Working with influencers can be very beneficial, but it depends on your goal. Do you want sales? A call to action? Subscribers? Followers? UGC? Be careful of what and who you work with. I recently went to an event and saw an influencer steal a bulk of free vouchers (meant to be one per person) straight into their handbag. My jaw hit the floor. What is going on these days? New Zealand is a village, and an accountant always audits vouchers!
I'll always remember attending a beauty event hosted by two international dermatologists with 30 influencers, and I was one of the only two media guests. It came down to the Q&A after the product presentation, and the client opened it up to the audience to ask questions—deathly silence. Not one beauty influencer could pick up the microphone and ask a question. Guess who could? You guessed
it, the two journalists were sitting in the back of the room (it was assigned seating).
After the Q&A, the dermatologists said, please feel free to grab any products that work for your skin type. I knew my skin type, and after the presentation, I knew what products would work for me. I took two. An influencer asked me how I knew what products to grab. I started to explain the products; ironically, after sitting through and listening to the presentation, how could you not know? What shocked me the most was that a dozen or so more influencers saw me helping and asked me to help them choose products for their skin type. I'm sorry, are they not the beauty influencers? It shows that many influencers need to gain experience or background in what they are talking about. Because when the tide goes out, we all see them swimming naked.
Being an influencer in 2024, in a highly saturated market, means
you can't just have a personality and hope that a journalist will cover the story and you can grab a sound bite. What are you bringing to the table?
What is your expertise?
For brands, when creating an invite list, make sure you choose wisely, do some research, and find out what the influencer can bring to your brand. Eyeballs are not sales.
What are your expectations?
If you are going to work with influencers, sometimes it's better to pick someone with fewer followers but more experience and targeted engagement. Someone who knows your industry respects your ethos and is a natural alignment for your brand. If they are attending the opening of an envelope and covering whatever shiny new thing is in their face, it isn't going to end well.
Another pet peeve of mine is influencers partnering with sustainable brands and making videos about how much they love sustainability and New Zealandmade products. The next reel down is a Zara haul - have you heard of continuity or business ethics? Yes, influencers, you are what you eat.
It's not just me who has influencer fatigue; consumers across the globe are craving authenticity. I asked about 20 under 30-year-olds what they look for when they follow someone new, and the majority of them said the equivalent of "funny and know their shit". Consumers are very aware of traditional influencer marketing, and these tactics can leave a sour taste in their mouths. Find the right influencer for your brand to create meaningful engagement with the right eyeballs.
SMALL STEPS TO SUSTAINABILITY
With the dawn of a new year, we are creeping ever closer toward 2030, a year that governments globally have united in setting as the tipping point for our climate.
Due to the wide-ranging targets developed for 2030, global legislators are starting to set ambitious goals and laws to help reduce emissions, protect our ecosystems, and ensure companies are taking responsibility for upholding human rights through their supply chain. Consumers are also no longer complacent when it comes to inaction on sustainability and are demanding transparency and leadership from the brands they buy from. So, if you have sustainability on your ‘to-do’ list, then I suggest 2024 becomes the year you start taking action. At Go Well Consulting, we work
with businesses across many industries, including cosmetics, healthcare, food and beverage, retail, and apparel. Our specialties include creating bespoke strategies, or road maps, for businesses on their sustainability journey, and then helping them implement and report on their achievements.
Sustainability can be daunting. It covers so many areas in the business world that it can be hard to know where to start. However, what we have learnt from working with dozens of different businesses over the years, is that you are probably already doing some great
By Vanessa Thompson, Go Well Consultinginitiatives in your business, it may just be time for you to create a plan to help identify your current initiatives and prioritise your actions for the future.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, here are a few small steps you can take to start on your sustainability journey:
You can’t manage what you can’t measure
Data is key when it comes to sustainability. As a business, you need to start recording and monitoring data on the things you consume, such as water, energy, waste, freight miles, etc.
By having an up to date record of these facilities, you can monitor usage over time, and set reduction targets. Sorting out your inhouse bin systems to separate out materials into the correct recycling streams and requesting data from your waste service provider is an easy place to start, and it will also help you in the future when you start to measure your emissions.
Evaluate your packaging
Plastic and packaging have been at the forefront of the media for many years now, with the food and beverage industry taking most of the blame. However, the apparel industry also uses significant amounts of packaging, from garment polybags to swing tags and hangers, all of these items have an impact, and many rely on virgin fossil fuels and cannot be recycled. Conducting a packaging audit of all your packaging would be a great place to start, so you really understand the volumes, materials, and sizes of all the packaging you use. Once complete, try to eliminate any unnecessary packaging items, and then review your materials to increase your use of recyclable and compostable materials.
Know your suppliers
Supply chain due diligence has been a focus for many governments over the last few years and legislation is starting to take form. To get ahead of this, apparel businesses need to know more about their supply chain,
where their products and materials are being made, and the conditions they are being made in. Creating a Supplier Code of Conduct is an easy way to communicate your standards and values when it comes to human rights with your suppliers.
Review your fabrics
In the apparel industry, one of the largest impacts on the environment is the fabric that you use in your products. Polyester and other synthetic materials are the most widely used materials in the apparel industry today, and are made from fossil fuels such as oil and petroleum. Fabrics such as polyester and nylon have gained popularity due to their price and ease of care, however, they come from non-renewable resources, and shed microplastics into our waterways when washed. We need to shift away from using virgin materials, and start to incorporate more recycled, regenerated, and organic materials. The growth of innovative material investment now makes it easier for small brands to access and afford more preferred fabrics, and by speaking with your suppliers you might be surprised by what they can now offer you, compared to five years ago.
Create a sustainability team
Sustainability work cannot be done in silos. All parts of a business need to be involved across any sustainability initiatives you may be trying to implement. By creating a sustainability team, you can ask team members to volunteer from across the business, and they can champion any actions or plans you may have and be the ‘go to’ for any sustainability tasks. Upskilling the team through sustainability courses, books, and events will help the volunteers will feel valued, and that they are contributing towards the betterment of society and the environment.
Sustainability is no longer a ‘nice to have’, and needs to be something that business owners are incorporating into their everyday activities. As mentioned above, there are some easy, quick wins that businesses can start to implement now. To really take strides in sustainability, businesses need to have a strategy or action plan to help identify their goals and prioritise their actions. If you need any help or support on your sustainability initiatives, please get in touch.
OMNICHANNEL PRICING: OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO RETAIL DATA INTEGRATION
THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRATED RETAIL DATA
Integrating data into retail strategies is a game changer for businesses. So, why haven’t all retailers and brands gotten on board?
Having a high-level view of everything happening within a business helps teams focus their efforts and resources in the right direction based on fluctuations in the market and ensures decisions match up with combined company and competitor data.
However, some companies don’t have a platform that democratizes data and aggregates insights, making them resistant to incorporating data within everyday work.
CHALLENGES TO RETAIL DATA INTEGRATION
A few potential reasons why certain retailers may have yet to integrate data-driven analytics into their everyday operations could be:
Lack of awareness of software opportunities
A retail intelligence platform breaks data silos and presents teams with comprehensive metrics based on competitive, company, and third-party data. Retailers may be concerned about the investment in this AI-driven software initially, but this platform increases ROI on other technologies a team has by optimizing operational efficiency and automating previously manual tasks.
Concerns about data accuracy
This platform crawls systems and websites daily for updated, accurate data to provide comprehensive metrics. Moreover, human error accounts for most mistakes during manual data analysis. AI-powered technology, on the other hand, removes this roadblock by correctly processing significantly more data daily than a retailer ever could.
Focus on immediate goals
Companies may not want to invest in this technology because they are focused on immediate outcomes. However, the benefits of implementing a data-driven analytics tool lead to long-term success by setting up repeatable, sustainable processes. While this takes slightly more time to implement upfront, it saves teams immense time by automating processes rather than continuously performing one-off projects.
IMPLEMENTING RETAIL INTELLIGENCE FOR BETTER BUSINESS OUTCOMES
Research from Gartner1 found that every year, poor data quality costs organizations an average of $12.9 Million. Meanwhile, McKinsey & Company2 found that companies that use data analytics report 93% higher profits and 115% higher ROI. Without utilizing a retail intelligence solution to integrate
retail data into every part of a business, retailers will see adverse effects, such as:
• Decreased speed to activation
• Lack of real-time visibility into market trends
• Inability to capitalize on opportunities promptly
• Loss of customer loyalty and increased churn
• Declining overall profitability
However, by partnering with an AI-fueled tool, teams can implement and gain access to crucial insights, so everyone can:
• Get answers quickly to keep up in the fast-paced retail environment
• Understand true performance across the business
• Increase speed to activation to beat the competition
• Feel confident in doing their job
HOW CAN MY BUSINESS BENEFIT FROM INTEGRATING RETAIL DATA?
It’s easy enough to say retail data integration with a retail intelligence solution will enhance a business, but don’t just take our word for it.
AWWG’s CEO, Marcella Wartenbergh, speaks to the benefit of integrating data into their everyday practices:
“EDITED gives us instant information. In today’s climate, we need up-to-date information every day. You can’t afford to wait a month. We use EDITED to study our competitors and benchmark how their collections
are structured… All of this data is available instantly.”
One core function EDITED’s Retail Intelligence Platform serves for AWWG is enabling teams to be more autonomous and agile in their decision-making. This technology allows Marcella’s teams to challenge one another and action strategies more quickly by using data. For example, teams can leverage market insights to affirm that a given brand may be increasing its prices by a certain percentage, providing an opportunity for AWWG to grow into a new price position.
“EDITED is the science my teams need to safeguard against mistakes as a business, to secure new opportunities in the market, and ensure we’re not dependent only on decision-makers who sit at the top,” says Marcella.
CONCLUSION
While some teams may initially feel integrating retail data into their everyday operations is a challenge, the benefits of implementing retail intelligence software outweigh the concerns significantly.
EDITED’s Retail Intelligence Platform offers the most accurate data and insights to help your team break down data silos, access comprehensive metrics, and optimize operational efficiency through automation, ultimately leading to long-term success.
LEATHER the
Captivating the minds of designers across the globe for Autumn/Winter collections is leather. From international fashion houses to emerging designers, leather is being showcased in a myriad of ways.
Alice + Olivia presented a collection filled with classic silhouettes utilising primary colours. While some pieces were classic and traditional, this was paired with jarring and abstract prints. This red jumpsuit is similar in hue to Mara 5-365 and leans towards the timeless pieces from their range.
Meanwhile, Tibi showcased a more masculine corporate meets military line. Filled with wool blazers, linen workwear, and low-waisted belts – it
was no surprise they layered these pieces with leather elements. This pencil skirt could easily be paired with Mara 12-687.
The entire capsule was a muted palette of natural hues, deep blues, and greys, with the occasional pop of a bright green.
Anna Sui’s Ready-to-Wear Fall collection was an experience in itself. The lineup was a curated antiques show that offered more personality than most. It did not follow any trends, it simply existed in its own world. With references like Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and Virginia Woolf, Anna Sui’s new collection was a unique history lesson. Mashed up, remixed, multi-layered – the range has several leather pieces in a hue like Mara
LEATHERforecast the

Jumping ahead a few decades, bright, eccentric colours are going nowhere. With a saturated hue like Mara 1-580, Lapointe’s Fall Readyto-Wear collection had several green colour-blocked looks. As a collection, the collection pulled focus to various textures, from fur, fringe, mesh, and
lace to leather. It had it all. Eckhaus Latta took over an empty industrial office in Hudson Square for their Fall Ready-to-Wear show. The pieces were a mixture of faux-fur, laminated felt, leather, ribbed cottons, and more. It is a very commercially viable collection, with pieces like this jacket with exquisite detailing in a thread like Mara 6-369.

This leather-draped a-line dress was near the closing of Proenza Schouler’s Fall Ready-to-Wear show. Similar to Mara 8-66, the colour palette throughout the range fell into blacks and cool whites with a shocking one-off burnt orange/red look in the middle of the show. Leather made several appearances throughout the night alongside some very clean silhouettes.
