EDITOR'S NOTE

Air Fryers For One and All!

A

ir fryer this, air fryer that! How did something that started as a “healthier way of frying food” become such a beloved essential benchtop appliance? The pandemic has seen a lot of trends in various sectors like beauty, fashion, cleaning, and more; some of the most interesting ones were those related to food. Yes, remember that time when we all aspired to unleash our inner hidden talents as chefs and bakers to pass our time making banana bread, focaccia or pancake cereals or to simply cook easy meals like the one-pot feta pasta and Gigi Hadid’s delicious Penne Alla Vodka. While most of us gave up on the Dalgona coffee in less than a month, one of the few things that has stayed with us even after these challenging times is our love for air fryers. With over ten billion views on the #airfryer and over 200 million views on #airfryer recipes on Tiktok and the rise of air fryer enthusiasts and influencers

on Instagram (yes, that’s actually a thing) like Jake Grigg, the airfryerguy and Jared Bobo also known as airfryerpapi, it does not seem like the air fryer rage is going to end anytime soon. Although these cooking appliances have gained immense popularity in the market today, the rapid air fryer technology is something that has been in existence for many decades now, similar to the tech used by traditional convection ovens. As a miniature version of convection ovens, with specific design differences, air fryers are known for their convenience and ease of use, and their small size and fast cooking makes preparing a meal less time consuming. One of the most popular items to cook in air fryers is frozen foods, and apparently, this is what the inventor actually meant them for when he introduced the technology way back around the Second World War. However, he was way ahead of his time, and the technology did not get commercialised until the 2000s when Philips introduced the air fryer as we know it today. (#RIP William Maxson, you would’ve loved viral air fryer TikToks.) Keeping up with the ever-evolving innovations and changing consumer behaviours there are many different air fryer brands in the market. From single or double basket or oven with racks, we love them. As our lives get busier we are all for convenience and the air fryer is a must have in today’s kitchen. Too tired to cook dinner after a long day at work? Just add some seasoning of your choice to chicken drumsticks and throw it in the air fryer, and they will be ready sooner than you freshen up and get out of the shower. Are friends coming over to watch a game? Crumbed fish and crispy French fries for the win! Living alone or are a student on a

budget? Simple one-person air fryer meals to your rescue. And it is not just the adults who are obsessed with this kitchen appliance. The safety of the air fryer makes them easy for even kids to use, with so many kids making their own after-school snacks the air fryer is a definite plus on the kitchen bench. Air fryers are also great for reheating leftovers and takeaways, and as they heat and keep the food crisp they win out over the microwave. With its growing popularity, air fryers are now even used to cook meals that were not conventionally meant to be air-fried. Every meal, from breakfast, lunch and dinner, can now be made in an air fryer. Even though the air fryer Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Chicken Tenders did not live up to the insane hype it got online, if Gordon Ramsay can approve the crunch without calories that air fryers provide, then what more is needed? Love it, hate it or tolerate it? It cannot be denied that the air fryer remains an innovative and exciting kitchen appliance for those seeking healthier, quick and easy meal solutions.

Perfectly Baked Sweet Treats, Every Time Say goodbye to the hassle of baking from scratch and welcome back the joy of homemade treats with Secret Kiwi Kitchen. Acting as your personal sous chef, taking care of the prep work so you can dive straight into the fun, creative side of baking, Secret Kiwi Kitcyhen removes the lengthy assembly times.

S

ecret Kiwi Kitchen’s baking mixes are air fryer friendly, making the process even quicker and more convenient. Co-owner Clare Gallagher said that baking in an air fryer was a game-changer. “It preheats in just a couple of minutes, compared to your oven's 25 to 30 minutes," said Clare. Just like air fryers simplify cooking, Secret Kiwi Kitchen streamlines baking. It eliminates the time-consuming and tricky aspects, ensuring that every batch turns out evenly and perfectly every time. Combining Secret Kiwi Kitchen’s pre-prepped baking kits with an air fryer creates an easy way to whip up delicious sweet treats at home anytime. Fueling the air frying trend, Secret Kiwi Kitchen products have become a sensation on social media. The brand’s Chocolate

Cake Mix, Universal Cake Mix, Brownie Mix, or Blondie Mix all work like magic in the air fryer. Remember that directions may vary based on your air fryer's size and model. Clare shared that the air fryer was quicker and more energy-efficient, keeping your kitchen cool, a blessing in the summer heat. For optimal results, smaller pans are your best bet. The air fryer's challenge is to bake through the centre without burning the crust; smaller cakes handle this like pros. We have a secret recipe that's perfect for the air fryer. Fruit Cobblers, also known as Dump Cake. Just grab a small ramekin, fill it halfway with fruit (even frozen works), and sprinkle a 1-2 cm layer of one of Secret Kiwi Kitchen’s mixes, top it off with slices of butter, bake in the air fryer at 160°C for 30 to 35 minutes, and enjoy a delightful treat right from the ramekin.

But let's talk about the real MVP: time. The air fryer has gifted me something invaluable — the ability to multitask without compromising on the quality of meals. While it works its magic, I can focus on helping with homework, catching up on emails, or even stealing a few precious moments to read a book. So, the next time you find yourself overwhelmed with the day-to-day challenges of being a mum, remember that a helpful ally might just be sitting on your kitchen counter. Chef's Favourite Air Fryer Pavlova Air fryers have become a go-to for chefs in the kitchen. Due to its popularity, chefs encourage anyone passionate about cooking to add this appliance to their kitchens at home.

Adam Dickson Chef

A

ir fryers have been considered one of the best investments for any foodie, especially for families with busy schedules or for a quick bite on the go. Chef Adam Dickson loves his air fryer. Many things can be made in an air fryer, such as brownies, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, chicken wings, and even rolled turkey breast. "When friends arrive unexpectedly, or you've got the family home from the beach, everyone is tired and hungry. "It's quick and easy to cook a mixed seafood platter or wedges, hotdogs or spring rolls," said Adam.

Adam is particularly proud of one air fryer recipe - air-fried pavlova - just in time for Christmas and takes only half an hour to prepare and cook. The air fryer pavlova will be a showstopper this Christmas, freeing up time and oven space. Take your favourite pavlova recipe, place the mixture onto an air fryer paper casing and bake. Leave the pavlova in the air fryer for at least 20 minutes to cool down, then remove to a wire cooling rack. Decorate with your family's favourite toppings. "In the home kitchen, air fryers are just fun, fun, fun."
