From Switzerland to the World How a humble slipper (and some Kiwi wool) became the journey of a lifetime Many people dream of living and working in different countries and raising their children of be people of the world yet realizing that dream seems beyond the imagination of most. But one family currently living in Wellington is achieving just that, and all because of a cute, felted slipper made from New Zealand wool.

an and Galina, and children Lara and Alice are in the midst of a global journey that has been enabled by invention, vision and opportunity… and New Zealand wool. The story begins when Management Consultant, Romanian-born German Dan, was working in Indonesia with Swiss wife Galina and two small children when they hit on an idea to make slippers. They wanted to have a business that would allow them to travel. To take their young daughters to other countries – not to visit – but to live, witnessing the culture, making friends and learning languages around the world. But, essentially, the business had to be ethical and sustainable to its very core. So, after a youtube tutorial and a very messy kitchen, the first pair of Baabuk slippers were born, made in the traditional European method. “We have never done shoes,” says Dan. “We bought wool and made them in the kitchen. It took us three months to make eight pairs of slippers - eight hours each slipper. And by doing it by ourselves for ourselves, we learned what needed to be done with this product,” he says. Samples made, they booked a trade fair stand at a huge German Trade Fair. Dan caught the plane from Jakarta with high hopes, but on arrival, quickly discovered how much he didn’t know about the shoe business!

“I had the slippers, but I had actually no idea which price to sell for,” Dan says. “A guy popped into the show and said, "Oh nice product. How much is your selling price?" I replied, "No idea, but can you help me to make one?" “I had a fridge full of bottles of champagne - we opened the first bottle at 10 o'clock in the morning and he spent three hours explaining how to correctly create my price. “Then another guy came on the stand and said, "Are you looking for a retailer, distributor, or agent?" I said, "What's an agent, what's a distributor?" Another bottle of champagne or two and Dan had his answers. And one week later the couple received their first order - a Dutch retailer wanting 700 pairs of the Baabuk slippers delivered in six-months-time. “700 pairs in six months! I did the calculation. If it takes you four hours a pair - eight hours a day - it'll take two years and one day to make them all on our kitchen table!” says Dan. “So basically, we had to find a way to make the shoes. And that's how we started the company. Now, celebrating a decade of

shoemaking, Dan and Galina’s business Baabuk has retailers and distributors throughout the world. Their product range includes sneakers as well as their original felted slippers. And they’ve built their own factory in Nepal employing 30 local people to make them. Ethics and sustainability are absolutely central to the family’s business approach. Baabuk is B-Corp certified, meaning they meet rigorous social and environmental impact standards and how they treat their employees and communities. For example, wool in the slippers needs to be from New Zealand, because of the superior treatment of the animals over most other countries. And the Nepalese factory operates in the same way, to a plan designed by Dan, with fair pay and conditions including health insurance, pension fund. For now, the Witting family, Dan and Galina, Lara and Alice are based in Mt Victoria in Wellington, with the children going to a nearby school and soaking up the local culture. While Dan does much of the talking, Galina is clearly a powerhouse at managing both business, home and family. Next step for the family is to return to Switzerland. It

was Galina’s dream that the children got to live and learn in other countries while they were young. “We used to live in many different countries. Our two girls were turning 10 and 13, not yet adults. So, we wanted to show them the world, not just to learn about life from the books at the school, but also to experience things, with their own mind and body and everything. “We looked at New Zealand's educational system and how I think you are ahead of many countries in education. It's not only writing and reading and counting, it's also experiencing things, and sharing, and collaborate together. I knew that there was something more happening here, so we

wanted for them to experience this. This is why we came to live in New Zealand,” Galina says. Dan and Galina’s story is infectious and every time it is told the couple gain a new partner and collaborator. While living in Mt Vic they met a local distributor and retailers wanting to stock Baabuk, and to their surprise, they’ve also met local wool producers wanting some of Dan and Galina’s vision and international connections to help their own brands. And those chance meetings are central to the Baabuk business. “The way we make business is actually just meeting people,” says Dan. “It's like literally when you're dating

somebody. It's who you meet with, who you have a coffee with, where you can create affinities. “That’s part of what started this world tour - to be in places where we can go and meet people without any grand plan. “So, we didn't come here with the idea that ‘I have to do your business’ - we wanted to live here and to meet the people. And I think this is the most beautiful way - there's no pressure, there's no obligation, there's no need, there's just ... fun! It's the pleasure. “And when you're having the pleasure in the morning to wake up, then you don't work, actually. And that's how we want to work and that's how we want to live.”
