EDITOR'S NOTE
My Dog is Crazy for Tennis Balls
There is pretty much nothing I wouldn’t do for Vinny. He is our little baby. Well, big baby at 21kgs. So when I came across an automatic ball launcher, I had to have it. Vinny is a standard poodle with a dash of springer spaniel who is - naturallyobsessed with tennis balls. To the point where I went to a tennis club and haggled to buy their old tennis balls.
I was excited to try out the PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher. The idea of giving my throwing arm a break while keeping Vinny entertained seemed like a dream come true. And let me tell you — it did not disappoint!
Right out of the box, the launcher felt sturdy and well-made. It comes with two standard-sized tennis balls and a power adaptor. I quickly discovered that it can also run on 6 D-cell batteries if you prefer a cordless experience out at the park. Setting it up was super easy, with an intuitive control panel offering nine distance settings (2.4 to 9.1 metres) and six angle adjustments. The audible training tones were a nice touch, designed to let your dog know when the ball is about to launch.
Vinny took to it immediately! His high energy levels meant he was more than happy to chase the balls, whether indoors in the hallway or outside in the backyard. The adjustable launch distances were great, allowing me to control how far the balls
were thrown based on our playing space. The automatic 15-minute rest period is a thoughtful feature, preventing overexertion, though Vinny would have gladly kept going all day!
It has some safety features too, a motion sensor that prevents accidental launches if Vinny gets too close. It can also hold up to three balls, which is perfect for training him to return them.
For any dog that loves fetch as much as Vinny, the PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher is a total game-changer. It provides hours of fun, burns off that endless energy, and gives you a welldeserved break.

Feeling the heat? So do your pets...
Ever tried walking outside in the blistering sun with bare feet and a fur jacket?
That’s exactly what your dog experiences when you take them for a walk in the heat of the day. Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their bodies to cool themselves down and can’t regulate their temperature as easily.
Certain dog breeds are particularly susceptible to heatstroke and should be given extra care during hot weather. Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers are at a higher risk due to their short snouts, which make it harder for them to pant efficiently and cool down.
It isn’t uncommon to see a surge in claims related to excessive heat as summer sets in, says PD Insurance COO Michelle Le Long. "We find heat-related issues in pets very distressing, as they cause significant suffering for both the animals and their owners. Heatstroke in dogs can even be fatal, which makes these situations especially heartbreaking because they are often preventable,” she continues.
“Being aware of their discomfort and potential health problems that come with heat is the first step towards avoiding unpleasant – and expensive – incidences of heatstroke, dehydration, sunburn and heat exhaustion.
"High humidity can worsen heat stress for pets, even when the temperature doesn’t seem too high. Keeping pets in lowhumidity environments whenever possible can make a big difference in helping them stay cool and comfortable," says Le Long.
PAWS FOR THOUGHT: YOUR PET COMPLETELY RELIES ON YOU TO KEEP THEM COOL
Prevention is better than cure. “Nobody wants a pet suffering, or holidays ruined unnecessarily,” notes Le Long, “And we all know the old saying ‘too much of a good thing is bad’. The same goes for excessive heat and sunshine.”
Healthy Pets NZ’s Dr Cath Watson, who provides expert advice towards illness prevention, says being aware of how pets respond to heat is the first and most essential step. “Generally, temperatures up to around 20C are comfortable for most cats and dogs; going over that can put them at higher risk of heatstroke,” she explains.
Dogs, especially, don’t cope well with excessive heat. Lacking the ability to sweat as effectively as we do, they control temperature by panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and noses. “These are small areas compared to the rest of the pup,” says Dr Cath, “So you can imagine how difficult it can be if the mercury is high.”
Cats are physiologically similar to dogs, but since many aren’t often found outdoors during the day, much less on a leash under the blazing sun, they are less susceptible to a scorching day. “Generally, if you’re hot, your cats and dogs probably feel that way, too. However, cats usually self-regulate their behaviour, avoiding overheating by taking it easy when it’s warm. They’ll look for shady or breezy areas, and drink water to stay hydrated.”
RISKS AND HEATSTROKE
The big risk is heatstroke. On the way to this dangerous condition, pets can dehydrate, burn their paws, and even sustain sunburn – particularly for ‘fairer’ pets. Dr Cath says signs of heatstroke in a pup can include purple gums or red skin, diarrhoea and or vomiting, excessive panting, dribbling or foaming from the mouth, and general laziness (lethargy). “If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool place and calm them. Wet their coat with room temperature water and most importantly, contact your vet immediately, as heatstroke can be life-threatening.”
Cats don’t pant, says Dr Cath, and if they do that’s a sign of something wrong. Heat exhaustion often sets in before heatstroke, and cats (and dogs) may become lethargic. If this progresses to symptoms including glazed eyes, difficulty breathing, unsteady walking and loss of balance, vomiting, and red gums or tongue, your cat may be suffering from heatstroke. If this is suspected, get your cat to a cool place, and contact the vet without delay.
HOW TO KEEP THEM COOL
Some simple tips to help your furry child beat the heat include:
• Provide plenty of fresh, cool water to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
• Exercise as early as possible in the morning, or later in the evening when things start cooling off a little (though hot afternoons are a pretty standard feature of Kiwi summers). If it’s really hot – approaching over 30C, avoid exercise unless your pup can take a swim.
• Create shady spots in your yard (noting that shade can move and become nonexistent throughout the day – so choose
somewhere that shade is provided for as long as your pet needs it) or use a cooling mat to give them a place to relax away from the sun.
• Treat them to pup-sicles (diced rock melon and plain yogurt blend) or frozen dog-safe fruit or ice cubes with peanut butter (mind the ingredients – avoid natural or artificial sweeteners).
• Watch out for hot pavements. Your Jandals might stop your paws from burning, but your dog doesn’t enjoy the same protection (consider dog booties if you must!).
• Consider using pet-safe cooling devices such as fans, cooling mats, cooling vests, wraps or bandannas or chill out chews to help your pets stay comfortable.
• Monitor your pet's hydration by checking for signs like skin elasticity or dry gums to ensure they stay hydrated.
• Most importantly, never leave your dog
in a parked car, even for a short time - it can quickly become dangerously hot and heat stroke is notoriously hard to reverse – if it’s not fatal it can still have life-long effects.
“For most of us, summer is the best season. Make these holidays the best ever for you and your pets with a few mindful measures to help them cope well with the elevated temperatures,” Le Long concludes.

Yes, size matters!
Addiction Pet Foods knows that when it comes to providing the right food for your dog, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Addiction Pet Foods is on a mission to celebrate New Zealand’s biggest and smallest dogs through its custom approach to their nutrition needs. Through competitions on social media, New Zealanders are sharing photos of their big and small canine companions, highlighting the love and care that go into keeping these pets healthy and happy.
With over 580,000 registered dogs across New Zealand, Kiwis understand that their dogs are family, whether they come in mighty, mini, or medium in-between sizes. Surprisingly, a recent survey found that only 18% of Kiwi dog owners are familiar with the distinct nutritional needs of big and small dogs. In other words, most Kiwis may not know that one size does NOT fit all when it comes to dog food.
WHY SIZE-SPECIFIC NUTRITION MATTERS
Small and large dogs may share common traits, but their bodies and metabolisms differ dramatically. These differences can impact their digestion, joint health, energy needs, and even how they chew and process food. Tailoring food for these specific needs can make a significant difference in their health and longevity:
• Bone and Joint Health: Larger breeds
like Labradors or Mastiffs are prone to joint issues due to their size, making them more susceptible to conditions like hip dysplasia or arthritis. Foods rich in glucosamine and chondroitin support joint health and help mitigate wear and tear.
• Metabolic Rates: Small breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Pomeranians, have faster metabolisms and burn calories more quickly. They require calorie-dense, nutrient-rich food in smaller portions to maintain energy levels. Larger breeds, however, have slower metabolisms, so their diets focus more on calorie control to avoid obesity, which can lead to heart issues and joint stress.
• Kibble Size and Texture: Dogs have different chewing and digestive abilities based on their size. Small breeds benefit from smaller kibble that’s easy to chew and digest, while larger kibble sizes are better suited for big dogs, promoting better oral health and encouraging slower eating.
“Many people think bigger dogs only need more food or calories, but the truth is that large dogs have different nutritional requirements altogether,” said Jerel Kwek, CEO and Co-Founder of Addiction Pet Foods. “It’s not just about feeding more
but feeding right. Our formulations balance these needs by providing big dogs with joint support and smaller portions for smaller breeds packed with nutrients to match their metabolic needs.”
SUPPORTING VITAL HEALTH NEEDS OF ALL BREEDS
Addiction Pet Foods goes beyond sizespecific nutrition to address additional health needs, like gut health, muscle development, coat shine, and heart function. With high-quality New Zealand proteins as the number one ingredient and no artificial fillers or additives, Addiction Pet Foods prioritises natural, holistic solutions that give pet owners peace of mind.
SHOWCASING NEW ZEALAND’S BEST BIG AND SMALL DOGS
Kevin the Great Dane, a gentle giant owned by Turi and Dee Tekoeti, recently earned the title of “Best Big Dog” in Addiction Pet Foods’ competition. Kevin not only has a big heart but also plays a vital role as a blood donor for all vets within the Canterbury region.
Fat the Chihuahua is a small but feisty pup with an adventurous nature. According to his owner, Genevieve Yee, whether it's rock climbing, paddleboarding, or frolicking around in the snow, he does it all.
Addiction Pet Food is a premium holistic pet food for both dogs and cats using a selection of free-range proteins, sustainable NZ King Salmon and cage-free poultry. Why does my dog eat grass?
Have you ever looked out your window to see your dog munching on grass? It’s a common sight that leaves many dog owners puzzled. Is it a dietary deficiency? Are they sick? Or just plain weird?
While the exact reason remains somewhat of a mystery, veterinary experts have identified a few key theories, and it turns out, your dog might just be enjoying a healthy snack!
1. SOOTHING AN UPSET STOMACH:
One of the most popular beliefs is that dogs eat grass to induce vomiting when they feel nauseous. The blades of grass tickle their throat, triggering a gag reflex.
• However, Dr. Sueda’s research actually found that only a small percentage of dogs actually vomited after eating grass, and even fewer showed signs of illness beforehand. While some dogs might eat grass when they already have an upset
stomach, it doesn’t seem to be the primary motivator for most.
2. FILLING A NUTRITIONAL GAP: Grass contains fiber, which can aid digestion. Some theorize that dogs instinctively eat grass to supplement their diet, especially if they’re lacking certain nutrients.
• While Dr. Sueda’s study didn’t find a direct link between diet and grasseating, ensuring your dog has a balanced diet with sufficient fiber is always recommended for their overall health.
3. BEHAVIORAL REASONS: Boredom, anxiety, or even seeking attention can lead to grass-eating in dogs.
WHEN TO WORRY:
While occasional grass-eating is generally considered normal, there are instances where it might signal a problem:
• Sudden increase in grass consumption: If your dog suddenly starts eating significantly more grass than usual, it could indicate an underlying issue.
• Changes in behavior alongside grasseating: If your dog shows other signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or changes in appetite in addition to eating grass, it’s time to consult your vet.
• Eating grass treated with chemicals: Pesticides and herbicides can be toxic to dogs. Ensure your lawn is free from these harmful substances.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Provide a balanced diet: Ensure your dog is receiving a complete and balanced diet to meet their nutritional needs.
• Offer mental and physical stimulation: Engage your dog in regular exercise and playtime to prevent boredom and anxiety.
• Redirect their attention: If you notice your dog excessively grazing, distract them with a toy or a game.
• Consult your veterinarian: If you’re concerned about your dog’s grasseating behavior or any accompanying symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice.
A NOTE ON PROBIOTICS AND FIBER:
• VCA Animal Hospitals suggest that dogs experiencing emotional distress might engage in this behavior as a coping mechanism. Providing plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and playtime can help alleviate these issues.
4. IT’S JUST TASTY:
Yes, sometimes the simplest explanation is the best one. Dr. Karen Sueda, a veterinary behaviorist, conducted a largescale study on grass-eating dogs (research published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science) and found that many dogs simply seem to enjoy the taste or texture of grass. It could be a form of entertainment, a way to relieve boredom, or just a satisfying munch.
While more research is needed, some veterinarians suggest that probiotics and increased fiber intake may help reduce grass-eating in some dogs. Probiotics can support gut health, which may address underlying digestive issues that contribute to the behavior. Fiber can also aid digestion and may satisfy a dog’s instinctual need for roughage. If you’re concerned about your dog’s grass-eating, talk to your vet about whether probiotics or fiber supplements might be beneficial.”
By understanding the potential reasons behind your dog’s grassy snacking habits and monitoring their overall health, you can ensure they’re happy, healthy, and well-fed.
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS FROM VETPOST FOR DOGS WITH MINOR DIGESTION ISSUES
FOOD:
• Royal Canin Digestive Care: This range is formulated to support digestive health in dogs with sensitive stomachs. It contains highly digestible proteins and prebiotics to promote a balanced gut microbiome. This could be a good option if you suspect your dog’s grass-eating is related to digestive discomfort.
• Hills Science Diet Perfect Digestion: This food features a blend of prebiotics, fiber, and antioxidants to support digestive health and a healthy microbiome. It also includes ingredients that promote gentle digestion.
PROBIOTICS:
• Pro Plan FortiFlora: This probiotic supplement contains a specific strain of beneficial bacteria that has been shown to promote intestinal balance and support a healthy immune system. It comes in a convenient powder form that can be sprinkled on your dog’s food.
• Fourflax Canine Probiotics: This supplement combines probiotics with prebiotics and digestive enzymes to support gut health and nutrient absorption. It’s available in a tasty chewable form.
• Dr. Tummy Probiotics: This is a comprehensive and multi-strain probiotic
FIBER:

Is my pet in pain?
As pet owners, our goal is to ensure our dogs and cats live comfortable, happy lives. However, they can’t talk when something is wrong, so it’s up to us to recognise the signs. Understanding these subtle cues can help you get your pet the care they need before the pain worsens.
SIGNS OF PAIN IN DOGS
Dogs are often more expressive when they’re in pain. Be on the lookout for the following changes:
• Mobility Issues: If your dog limps, is stiff, struggles to get up, hesitates to jump, or seems less enthusiastic about walks or climbing stairs, they could be in pain. Even small changes like lagging behind on walks or difficulty getting into the car may indicate discomfort.
• Behavioural Shifts: Sudden aggression, irritability, withdrawal, restlessness, or changes in sleep patterns may be signs of distress. Look for excessive licking or chewing of a particular area, as well as reduced interest in food or play.
• Vocal Cues: Whining, yelping, or
growling, especially when touched, can indicate that your dog is hurting.
• Physical Indicators: Changes in posture (such as hunching), a tucked tail, trembling, panting, rapid breathing, and changes in facial expression (such as tense muscles or wide eyes) may signal pain.
SIGNS OF PAIN IN CATS
Cats tend to hide pain well, making it essential to watch closely for more subtle signs:
• Changes in Activity: A reduction in activity levels, reluctance to jump, or spending more time in hiding could be early indicators. Grooming less or experiencing litter box issues can also be signs of discomfort.
• Behavioural Shifts: Increased aggression, irritability, excessive meowing, changes in sleep patterns, or loss of appetite might signal pain. A decrease in interaction with family members is another red flag.
• Physical Indicators: Hunched posture, flattened ears, dilated pupils, squinting, or changes in facial expression, such as grimacing, might suggest that your cat is in pain. Additionally, over-grooming one area could be a sign of localized discomfort.
WHEN TO SEE A VET
If your pet exhibits any significant behavioural or physical changes, it’s time to visit the vet. Waiting for more obvious
signs like crying out in pain may mean your pet is already experiencing severe discomfort.
Here are some scenarios that warrant immediate veterinary attention:
• Sudden limping or inability to bear weight
• Vocalizing pain
• Difficulty breathing
• Loss of appetite for more than 24 hours
• Straining to urinate or defecate
• Any trauma or injury
The sooner pain is addressed, the better your pet’s chances for recovery. Your vet can diagnose the problem and recommend treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or surgery if necessary.
REMEMBER: You know your pet better than anyone else. If something feels off, trust your instincts and seek professional help.

Does my dog see in colour?
Ever tossed a bright red toy into the green grass, only for your dog to lose track of it? It might not be a case of a lazy sniffer, but rather their eyes playing tricks on them! While dogs don’t see the world in black and white as we once believed, their color vision is still quite different from ours.
Imagine viewing the world with sepia tones—where blues and yellows stand out as the most vivid colors. That’s more like how your dog sees things! Their vision is dichromatic, which means they have only two types of color receptors in their eyes, compared to the three that humans have. This makes their color perception similar to people with red-green color blindness.
WHAT COLORS CAN DOGS SEE?
• Blues and Yellows: These are the most vibrant hues for dogs, so a bright blue toy on a yellow background is easy for them to spot.
• Greens and Reds: These appear more muted, almost brownish-gray. That bright red toy you threw? It might just blend into the grass!
• Purples: To dogs, purple looks pretty much the same as blue.
WHY DO DOGS SEE THIS WAY?
It all comes down to evolution. Dogs descended from wolves, who needed to detect movement and navigate in low light conditions, like dawn or dusk. As a result, dogs have:
• More Rod Cells: These are great for detecting motion and seeing in dim light, giving dogs better night vision compared to humans.
• Sensitivity to Blue Light: This feature likely helped wolves hunt during dawn and dusk when blue light is more prominent.
FUN FACT:
Although dogs have a limited color range, they can distinguish more shades of gray than humans can.
TIPS FOR CHOOSING DOG TOYS
• Go for Blue or Yellow: These colors
stand out the most against different backgrounds.
• Consider Contrast: Even if the toy isn’t blue or yellow, make sure it contrasts well with the environment, like a dark toy on light grass.
• Don’t Stress: Even if your dog can’t see the “true” color of a toy, they’ll still love it if it’s fun to chase, chew, or cuddle.
Your dog’s vision is quite different from yours, but perfectly suited to their needs. So next time you’re playing fetch, remember that your dog might be seeing that red ball a little differently than you do.

Rise of the fur child: Survey reveals generational pet owner attitudes
With pets increasingly seen as fur children or cherished family members, it's no surprise that 91% of PD Insurance policyholders consider their dogs and cats when making major life decisions such as moving home, travelling, or even changing jobs.
This is just one thought-provoking insight from PD Insurance’s latest biannual pet parent survey. The pet insurance specialist aimed to discover how pet parenting differs across generations, how our attitudes toward pets evolve, and the differences in approaches between Baby Boomers, Millennials, Gen X, and Gen Z.
More than 1,500 pet owners weighed in and while some findings might be expected, others come as a complete surprise.
For this research, the generations are categorised as:
• Baby Boomers - aged 60 to 78
• Generation X - aged 44 to 59
• Millennials - aged 28 to 43
• Generation Z – aged 18 to 27
“No, we’re not looking to stoke any intergenerational fires,” laughs Michelle Le Long, PD Insurance COO. “But rather, we’re looking for common ground and how pets fit into families from one generation to another.”
PETS AS CHILDREN AND BELOVED FAMILY MEMBERS
The biggest surprise? It’s Gen Z who are most likely to consider their dogs and cats as children. “This finding made us look twice,” confesses Le Long. “Most might assume that Baby Boomers would predominantly view pets as replacement children in an empty nest.”
Additionally, 28.9% of Millennials also think of their pets as children. (In our April 2024 survey 36 respondents reported purchasing a pet stroller for their fur child). While not deemed children, nearly fourfifths (77.9%) of Baby Boomers consider their pets to be beloved family members. Gen X is a fraction behind at 77.8%.
When asked, ‘Do you think of your pet(s) as substitutes for having children’, almost 50% of Gen Z and Millennials collectively answered ‘yes, definitely’, or ‘yes, somewhat’.
Intergenerationally, the notion of ‘fur kids / beloved family members’, or pets on an equal footing with human children is absolutely growing. And fast!” states Le Long.
PETS AS SUBSTITUTES FOR CHILDREN?
“Ah, the big question,” laughs Le Long. “And one where you’d expect - and we found - a big variation between the generations. That’s because many of us will think of our pets as direct substitutes for children right up to the point that we actually have children.”
Generation Z didn’t disappoint, with 25% saying ‘yes definitely’ to pets as child substitutes and a further 38% adding ‘for now’. Among Millennials, 23% said ‘yes definitely’ with 8% in the ‘for now’ category. There’s a notable drop for Gen X with 20% saying ‘yes definitely’ and Baby Boomers were the least likely to describe their pets as children, with 40% saying ‘no, not at all.
TREATS FOR THE FUR CHILDREN
Splurging on the kids is a time-honoured tradition and with pets being treated as children, there’s no surprise that the fur children get priority in the budget. Setting aside vet bills, Gen X leads the pack in spending, with a staggering 21.7% spending more than $3,000 on their fur babies every year.
Millennials aren’t far behind, with 20.3% and Gen Z is also generous with 18.2% allocating a big chunk of change to their
fur children. Only 10.2% of Baby Boomers allocate so much in their budgets.
“That’s staggering,” says Le Long, “But notably, people across generations are very good to their pets as is clear in the vast percentage affording significant spend to fur children.”
That’s clear in the other end of the question asking, ‘Excluding vet bills, how much do you estimate you spend on your pet/s in a year?’. For Generation Z, 79.5% spend more than $1000, going up to 85.7% of Millennials, 84.1% of Gen X, and 75.6% of Baby Boomers.
PETS IN THE WORKPLACE (AND QUALITY CONVERSATIONS)
For some time, PD Insurance has noted the trend of bringing pets into the workplace, and there’s even a ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’ that took place on 21 June this year. An earlier survey from April 2024 showed that only 13% of respondents were allowed to bring pups to work, while nearly 30% said they’d be willing to take a pay cut for the privilege.
But how do the generations view this growing trend? No surprise, perhaps, that Gen Z is top of the pops for pups in the office, with 78% in favour. Close behind, 71% of Millennials give the idea the thumbs up, dropping to 67% for GenX and 65% for Baby Boomers.
“There’s a growing body of research
indicating that pets in the workplace can help defuse stress,” says Le Long, “and it’s safe to say the younger generations are keen on the idea. It must be noted, though, that not all workplaces are right for a pet, and not all pets are suitable for an office job either!”
Looking for quality conversations? Sometimes pets are just the best for listening, and it turns out Millennials are most likely to chat away like the dogs and cats understand every word, with 92.5% saying this is them. Mind you, never mind the specific generation – most pet lovers love a good old chinwag with the fur children, with 90.9% of Gen Z, 89.1% of Gen X and 85.2% of Baby Boomers humouring.
COSYING UP WITH THE FUR CHILDREN
It’s not just an office dog (or cat) that can boost morale, there’s emerging
evidence that letting pets share your bed offers mental and physical benefits. But how do the generations approach sleeping arrangements?
Those between 18 and 27 years are most likely to accede, with 64.8% of Gen Z being okay with the pup or kitty competing for the covers. There’s a fair drop to Millennials; just over half (50.2%) of whom allow pets to sleep on the bed, down to 49.3% of Gen X and 44.3% of Baby Boomers.
“Younger generations may find comfort and companionship in sharing their bed with pets,” says Le Long. “But perhaps over time, many of us start to value having a bit more space at night.”
LIFE DECISIONS AND FUR FAMILY MEMBERS
Additional generational insights further reinforce Le Long’s contention. When the survey asked if people consider pets when
making major life decisions like moving, travelling or changing jobs, Boomers and Gen X are overwhelmingly looking out for fur babies at 90.3% and 89.9% respectively. That went up to 93% of Millennials, and 96.6% of Gen Z.
However, across generations, Le Long says the biannual PD Insurance survey has shown one consistent finding: we all love our pets, lots. “That’s a clear result: PD pet parents treasure their pets, no matter the generation to which they belong.”

Saving Hope Foundation
"Never, never be afraid to do what's right"
Over the last seven years, the Saving Hope Foundation has rescued and re-homed over 3,000 puppies and dogs.
The team at Saving Hope Foundation need more foster volunteers to help keep making a difference. Families that already have pets can also foster. They often have very young puppies whose lives are enriched by being socialised with foster volunteers’ older dogs, cats, chickens and farm animals. It is brilliant for their socialisation and opens up the opportunity for them to be homed with prospective homes looking for pups raised in environments with cats, chickens, and so on.
WHY BECOME A FOSTER OR WHY JOIN A RESCUE ORGANISATION?
Being a foster and being part of the Saving Hope rescue team, is an indescribable life changing process. You grow as a person seeing this little puppy go from strength to strength under your care. You cry for where they came from and their story, but you also laugh at their antics as their personality comes to the fore and it is heart warming seeing their confidence grow more and more everyday, with each new thing they learn. You enjoy seeing their happiest of wiggly tails, bouncing around your home, playing with your dogs and figuring out how to climb up stairs or how to interact gently with your other pets. You even see how resilient they are and how their precious
spirit isn’t damaged by the world and you realise the impact you had to make that happen. Every bit of effort poured in, helps shape each puppy and when you find their forever home, you’re passing that torch on to their forever families, to continue your work to shape that puppy’s future. To love, adore, cherish, teach, respect, play, devote to and share with their puppy as their new family member. Instead of sadness, there is a huge amount of joy when they find their forever homes. You also know the next litter of pups needing your help is just around the corner, as the need for rescuers and foster carers is high. If you’d like to be part of the Saving Hope foster adventure, please pop in an application on our website. We welcome new fosters and have a dedicated team that can support and guide you on your foster journey, with all supplies, vet and food costs covered by Saving Hope.
HOW CAN INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, YOUTH, BUSINESSES OR OTHER ORGANISATIONS CONTRIBUTE TO SAVING HOPE’S WORK?
Fosters are the lifeline of our work, but so too is anyone willing to donate to improving the lives of the pups and dogs in our care. The costs of running a rescue are huge and we are so grateful to everyone that makes a donation to Saving Hope via
the donation link on our website. We’re also so grateful for the volunteers that reach out to us via our website, with many helping us to collate clean old sheets/ blankets/towels and any dog accessories at their work places and schools. We also often have volunteers creating tug toys, knitting jerseys or making dog beds for the pups. From time to time young children will also bake cookies with their parents and have a bake sale in their neighbourhood or students will organise a sausage sizzle at their school or hold a stall for Saving Hope in their community. There is something for all ages and talents, rescue work is a huge team effort and everyone’s efforts are so appreciated. If you’d like to support the pups and dogs in our care, please reach out to us, we’d love to hear from you.

Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue
Pitbulls, Staffys, Bullies and their crosses are often overlooked because of their looks and media hype. Bull breed dogs are NOT killers. They are loving, loyal, gentle souls that simply need the right owner and lots of love.
Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue provides temporary shelter, food, medical attention, and comfort to neglected and rejected dogs. We seek out new homes for these dogs and try to educate the public about the humane care of dogs. We consider the unique needs of all the dogs in our care and work compassionately to prepare a safe, appropriately socialised dog for a wonderful new life.
Through our de-sexing program we try to help prevent dogs ending up in shelters, we do this by de-sexing the dogs in our community producing unwanted litters. Our aim is to reduce the population of unwanted, neglected, and abused bull breed dogs by preventing at risk dogs from producing litters. We approach owners,
work with locals and councils to find at risk dogs, as well as helping lower income families ensure they are not adding to the problem by offering payment plans and heavily discounted procedures.
Owning a dog is commonly rated in the top five things to do in life and is very rewarding. If you are thinking about getting a dog or would even like to come view them, just get in touch!

Keeping pets safe in the summer
Hot summer months can present some challenges for our animals. Here are our tips on helping your pet stay happy, healthy and cool during summer.
TAKE EXTRA CARE WHILE EXERCISING YOUR PET
Exercising in the scorching sun and during the hottest hours of the day can be dangerous for your pet. It is important you exercise your pet early in the morning or in the evening throughout the summer months as these are the coolest times of day and your pet is less likely to overheat. Avoid long and strenuous walks on warm, sunny days, and steer clear of prolonged sun exposure. Many cases of heat stroke in dogs are due to strenuous physical exercise on warm days, so it is important that you pay attention to your pet’s needs and avoid overexertion. Take your pets to an area that has shade or a place for them to swim so they can take a break to cool off, and if they want to slow down or stop, follow their lead.
Dogs with flat faces, such as bulldogs and pugs, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot breathe or pant as effectively as dogs with longer noses. Take extra care with dogs of these breeds when exercising in the summer.
Having fresh water available for your pet is essential all year-round, but even more important when it’s hot outside. Bring a
dog-friendly water bottle along with you when you’re out walking or playing in the park, and always ensure that there is fresh water available for all animals after exercising.
If you exercise your rabbits or guinea pigs in your garden, or in an outdoor play pen this summer, make sure they have adequate shade and plenty of fresh water at all times. A frozen icepack or a wet tea towel can help to keep them cool on very hot days.
TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET COOL
Your pet can heat up quickly and this can result in heat exhaustion that can be fatal. Keep an eye out for excessive panting, breathing difficulties, weakness, or drooling. To avoid this, make sure your animals always have access to fresh drinking water and adequate shelter for protection (keep the sun’s moving shadow in mind). There are also some other tricks to keep your pet cool this summer!
DOGS
• You can half-fill a shallow children’s paddling pool for your dog to bathe in. Just make sure your dog can get in and out easily.
• Put ice cubes in an indoor bowl, and freeze a big block of ice for your dog’s outdoor bowl.
• Doggie ice blocks are also a great way to keep them hydrated. Just freeze your dog’s favourite treat in water, inside a Kong, or an ice-cream container.
• You can find cooling mats at most pet stores. These can be used as crate liners or as beds, and can be helpful for other animals too.
CATS
Dogs respond differently to heat than people do. Unlike us, sweating isn’t effective in cooling them down. They can only sweat small amounts through their paws, and rely mainly on panting to cool down. This makes them susceptible to heat stress in warmer weather. In the summer months, pet owners should take extra care with older or overweight pets, brachycephalic breeds, and those suffering from cardiac conditions.
Cats quite enjoy the warm weather, but they still need to keep cool like any other animal. They will naturally gravitate towards a cool floor to lie down on if they
are hot, so make sure there are some cool, shaded areas available in your home. Don’t worry if they are particularly sleepy during the summer – cats will sensibly nap even more on a hot day, rather than moving around and getting hotter.
• Cats tend to prefer their water to be placed away from their food. It is important your cat is keeping hydrated, so if you are noticing they aren’t drinking from their water bowl, make sure it is situated away from where they eat. Some cats prefer running water; you can get a variety of pet water fountains which will encourage them to drink more.
• You can place ice water in glasses and bowls around the house. Cats are notorious for drinking out of any water container they can find!
• Stroking your cat with a damp cloth is a great way to keep them cool (if they allow it!). The best places to attend to are their paws, bellies and outside of their ears.
• Make sure to brush your cat regularly. Matted fur works as insulation, and will mean your cat can overheat more easily. If you have a long-haired cat and decide to shave them, leave at least a full inch of fur to help prevent sunburn.
SMALL ANIMALS
Small animals are particularly vulnerable to heat stroke, so it is very important you make sure they aren’t too hot. Here are some things you can do keep them happy and healthy this summer:
• Relocate your bird, rabbit, guinea pig or any other small animal to a cooler part of your home.
• Place ice cubes wrapped in a tea towel, a small frozen icepack, or a wet tea towel in their enclosure for them to lean against.
HORSES AND LIVESTOCK
Livestock too can suffer in summer heat.
• Animals rely on evaporation of fluid to help them lose heat, either by sweating or panting, so they need to drink fresh, clean water frequently in hot weather.
• Horses with heavy covers will be heatstressed on hot days. Unlike dogs, they can’t pant so they rely on evaporation of sweat to lose heat. This means that horses with thick covers can’t lose heat efficiently. Light, porous covers on thinskinned show horses and racehorses are acceptable.
• Sheep and angora goats carrying more than one year’s fleece will be heatstressed in hot weather and prone to flystrike in humid weather. They must be shorn before the height of summer.
• Newly shorn animals need shade to prevent sunburn.
KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE:
• Excessive panting
• Restlessness
• Excessive drooling
• Unsteadiness
• Abnormal gum and tongue colour
• Collapse
IF YOU FIND AN ANIMAL SUFFERING FROM HEAT STROKE:
• Move the animal into shade or an air conditioned area
• Offer the animal water to drink
• Spray or soak the animal in water cooler than them and use air movement (e.g. a fan or move breeze) to help cooling
• If the animal is young and healthy, immerse them in water cooler than them
• Cool first, then take them to a vet ASAP
HOT
CARS CAN KILL
On a warm day, the inside of your car heats up very quickly. The temperature inside a closed vehicle in the sun can reach 50 degrees Celsius in less than 15 minutes. Opening the windows slightly has very little effect.
A normal dog’s body temperature is around 38.5°C. Dogs only sweat a small amount through their paws and rely on panting to cool down. In a hot car, even with the windows slightly open, panting is not enough to keep a dog’s body temperature within a safe range. A dog can withstand a body temperature of 41°C for a short amount of time but will quickly suffer irreparable brain damage and even death. Heat stroke is a serious condition for dogs with mortality rates between
39-50%. Young, overweight or elderly animals, or those with short muzzles or thick, dark-coloured coats are most at risk of overheating.
Please don't leave your dog unattended in a car at any time of the day. If the purpose of your trip is not to take your dog somewhere, please leave your dog at home. It is an offence under the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations 2018, to leave a dog in a hot vehicle if they are showing signs of heat stress, such as excessive panting, drooling or hyperventilation, and shade-seeking. The dog owner and the owner of the vehicle can be fined $300, and if the dog’s welfare is significantly impacted, you could be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
If you find a dog locked in a car in distress, please call the Police or your local SPCA immediately. Do not smash the window as this puts both you and the dog at risk.
BEWARE OF SUNBURN
Just like people, animals can also suffer from sunburn! Pets who are fair-skinned or light-haired are particularly susceptible to the sun’s harsh rays. Skin cancer occurs commonly in dogs and cats, and even though the fur provides some sun protection, your pet needs a sunblock applied every 3-4 hours on areas that have no, or little, hair.
The good news is you can buy petfriendly sunscreen to rub on the tips of their ears, on the end of their nose,
Continued on pg. 38
Continued from pg. 37
and on their stomach – these are the most commonly sunburnt areas. Normal sunscreen ingredients include zinc oxide, which can be toxic to animals, so petfriendly sunscreen is best.
REMEMBER THE 5 SECOND RULE
Remember, if the pavement or sand is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pet! Your dog’s feet can get burnt and blistered on the hot ground, particularly hot pavements, asphalt or scorching beach sand. Hot black iron-rich sands are found along much of the Western Coast of the North Island and can cause huge damage to the paws of your furry friends. Check if it’s a safe temperature by placing the back of your hand on the pavement or sand for five seconds. If it’s too hot to keep your
hand there then your pet shouldn’t be out walking on it.
TRAVELLING WITH YOUR PET
If you are heading on a road trip with your pet this summer, make sure you plan ahead. This will ensure the comfort and safety of everyone in the car, whether two legs or four.
Before setting off on your adventure, take your pet on several short car trips. This is especially important if you want to take your cat away with you, as cats aren’t usually the greatest of travel buddies! Building up your pet’s familiarity with the car and transport will help your pet get used to what’s ahead. During this training period, make sure you head to places which are fun for your pet, rather than just going to places they may not enjoy, like the vet! This approach will help your pet associate car trips with having fun.
Unrestrained animals can distract or
disrupt the driver, which can be very dangerous. If there is a collision, an unrestrained animal is at risk of injuring themselves, and everyone else in the car too. Having the correct restraints, such as a suitable pet carrier, pet seatbelt or car seat, helps to keep you and your animal safe during travel. You can find these items at most pet stores.
Remember that whilst travel and new places is exciting for people, it can be unsettling for your pet. A collar with identity tags is important in case your pet gets lost, and a microchip is vital - it can be the difference between being reunited with your pet and losing your pet forever.
SHADE IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL ANIMALS
Whether you have chickens, dogs, cats, small animals, horses, goats, sheep or cows, they all need to have adequate shelter that protects them from the sun’s harsh rays.
Make sure there are plenty of places for your horses to hide from the heat of the sun to avoid overheating, sunburn and horse flies. Trees are a decent form of shade, but man-made shelters that do not have enclosed sides are also effective.
If you keep your dog outside, it is critical your dog has access to shade. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat, and please remember dark coloured dogs absorb more heat than dogs with lighter coats. Tree shade and tarpaulins are ideal because they don’t obstruct air flow.
Make sure your cat has plenty of shady areas to rest. It may be a good idea to close some of your blinds and curtains to provide them with a cool spot to snooze.
If your small animals live outside, you can improve ventilation of their hutch or coop by putting bricks or something similar underneath which brings it off the ground. Also, make sure their hutch or run is in the
shade all day by moving it around as the sun moves.
GROOMING IS HELPFUL TOO
Maintaining your pet’s grooming regime is important in the summertime. It helps with the high prevalence of parasites, effective temperature regulation, and protection from sunburn.
Some animals such as dogs with double or woollen coats, or long-haired rabbits and cats, will require consistent grooming, and sometimes might need help from a professional. Regular grooming will also help with matting, which not only can become painful, but will also trap moisture and heat. This is particularly important for dogs who like to swim in the sea, or roll in the sand during the summer.
You may want to give your pet a summer cut to help avoid matting, or to keep your pet cool, but please resist the urge to shave your pet. Your pet’s coat helps to prevent sunburn.
Checking the ears of your cat, rabbit or dog regularly is also important during the summer, particularly if swimming is on your dog’s play list. Dogs whose ears fold over are also prone to ear infections, as well as being a warm and cosy place for fleas, ticks and mites to set up camp.
Amidst your pet’s adventures this summer, they can attract debris between their toes. So make sure you also pay attention to your pet’s paws.
SEND PARASITES PACKING
Hookworms, heartworms, fleas and ticks are more prevalent during the summer. They are so tiny you can barely see them, but there is nothing small about the problems they can bring to your household. They make your pet itch like crazy, and can transmit diseases to pets and people. Keeping on top of your flea and worm treatments will help keep these nasty critters away.
Worms can infest your pet in a number of ways. These include coming into contact with faeces, or areas/objects/food that are contaminated. Some worms can even infest your pet through the pads of their feet. Ticks can infest your pet by latching onto
them when they pass through vegetation such as grassy areas, forests or fields.
Your pets can pick up fleas from the environment, from other animals, and even from people or objects that fleas or their eggs are hitching a ride on. Flea eggs can remain dormant for a very long time, most commonly in the garden, in carpet or furniture inside the house. Approximately 5% of the flea population are adult fleas that you might see on your pet, and the other 95% are present as eggs larvae. Therefore, to effectively control fleas it is essential to control all stages of a flea’s lifecycle.
A bad flea infestation can make dogs and cats, especially puppies and kittens, anemic, because they consume up to 15 times their own weight in your pet’s blood every day. Some animals are especially sensitive to bites and develop flea allergy dermatitis. This skin condition can be incredibly uncomfortable and irritating for your pet, causing intense itching, hair loss, inflamed skin, and self-trauma.
Thankfully, there are many effective parasite control options available to protect your pet and your family from parasites. Just ask your veterinarian for the most appropriate solution for your pet, based on where you live, the risk of different parasites in the area, and your pet’s own individual circumstances.
Rabbits are also susceptible to parasites, especially if they live outside. Check your rabbit regularly for mites, fleas and worms, and speak to your vet about the best way to protect and treat for parasites. Signs they might have an infestation include hair loss, crusting, redness or scaling of the skin.
The Purr-fect Pick-Me-Up The benefits of catnip and valerian for your feline friend
BY CAROLINE MOORE
I think it's fair to say that, as the owner of online cat store Fang & Fur, my feline has become a connoisseur of kitty goods! Her go-to treats are our dried organic catnip Furvana, and our dried organic catnip and valerian blend, Cosmic Kitty. Both come in super cute tins with psychedelic artwork to set the mood!
fangandfur.co.nz
FURVANA ORGANIC CATNIP
Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, contains a compound called nepetalactone that interacts with your cat’s olfactory receptors. About 50-70% of cats are sensitive to catnip, and the effects can be downright hilarious. Suzi Q's usual reaction is to roll in it, have a nibble, and then go generally cuckoo. This is usually followed by a period of rest and relaxation. Beyond the fun, catnip can be a great stress reliever, evoking feelings of euphoria and contentment. If your cat is nervous about traveling, a trip to the vet, or adjusting to a new environment, a sprinkle of catnip can help calm them down. Catnip also encourages play and exercise, making it an excellent tool to combat chonkiness and boredom.
COSMIC KITTY CATNIP & VALERIAN BLEND
While valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is often associated with human relaxation, it has a stimulating effect on cats! The
compound actinidine in valerian mimics the effects of catnip for felines who may not be responsive to nepetalactone.
A sniff and a nibble of Cosmic Kitty will send your feline into a far out state of euphoric fervour with lazy cats becoming exercise machines! Valerian also has a postplay calming effect which can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep. Suzi Q recently had dental surgery and the subsequent days of being kept inside with a cone around her neck did nothing for her nerves! Luckily we had plenty of feline herbs on hand and Cosmic Kitty was particularly effective at settling her down.
A WHISKER-WORTHY EXPERIENCE
Catnip and valerian are more than just indulgences - they’re tools to enhance your cat’s well-being! Whether you’re looking to stimulate, soothe, or simply entertain your feline companion, these natural remedies are a safe and effective way to show your love. So go ahead, treat your cat to a whiff of happiness and enjoy the ensuing antics!
