news KIMBERLY-CLARK PARTNERSHIP Kimberly-Clark New Zealand is proud to announce it has been named a key partner of the New Zealand Government’s ‘Access to Period Products in Schools’ initiative. Commencing mid-June, students from more than 1,610 schools and kura will have access to free tampons and pads, a key first step to addressing period poverty in New Zealand. Kimberly-Clark is the manufacturer of New Zealand’s leading period care brand, U by Kotex. In 2020, the company participated in the Government’s Waikato trial of free period products in 15 schools and kura in the Waikato region, specifically supporting Fraser High School. In the same year, the company publicly committed to alleviating period poverty for 500,000 people
across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific, as well as educating five million people to fight menstrual stigma. New Zealand is only the fourth country in the world to roll out free period products in schools nationally. In 2020, Scotland made history by making free period products available to anyone who needs them and 84 per cent of students reported a positive impact on them (their wellbeing). That same year, free period products were rolled out in all schools in England and Wales. U by Kotex New Zealand spokesperson, Julie McNae, said the Government’s national program is critical to ensuring more students stay in school. “Research shows that nearly 95,000 9-to-18-year old’s may stay at home during their
periods because they didn’t have access to pads and tampons. By providing greater access to these essential products at school, more of our young people will have the chance to experience their period with dignity and stay in school. Nothing should get in the way of an education, certainly not a period, and we’re proud to partner the Government on this
game-changing initiative,” said McNae. Kimberly-Clark has been working to address period poverty for many years and is a major partner of The Period Place, Aotearoa's biggest period advocacy charity, and one of the organisations that petitioned the Government for period products to be accessible for students in Aotearoa. n

GROWING PLANT-BASED FOODS With a long history dating back to 1985, the Quorn brand which is owned by parent company Monde Nissin Corporation, is poised and ready for the growing trend of more consumers looking for meat-free alternatives. Originating in the UK and now sold world wide as a market leader in the Frozen meat-free space, Quorn have some exciting things planned for the New Zealand market.
T
aking a different approach, Quorn™ uses a protein source from the earth, which is produced with minimal demand for land or one that poses any heavy environmental burden. Then using an age-old process of fermentation (like bread), it grows into a mycoprotein that is a naturally sourced meat-free super protein that is soy-free and non GMO. As such, it then delivers a great meat-like texture which is low in calories, low in fats and salts, no cholesterol and packed with fibre. It is then used as a cooking ingredient or developed into a meat substitute range of pre-packaged meals. The New Zealand-based Monde Nissin team have recently appointed (ISM) Innovative Sales & Merchandising NZ Ltd as their New Zealand partner to help further develop Quorn’s in-store execution strategies. ISM has a proven track record of their market expansion services and we are all looking forward to helping stores capture the growing frozen plant-based segment. BDM of Monde Nissin, Wade Vuletich, is very excited to have Grant and his team on board, working together to create brand awareness and celebrate a meat free movement. Additionally, Wade confirmed that Quorn has some delicious NPD coming through the pipeline to excite consumers with. CEO of ISM, Grant Pemberton has said that the plant-based segment is the next logical step as consumers look for healthier or “better for you options”. More consumers are looking for easier ways to swap meals out to a flexitarian-based lifestyle. Long term, plant-based will become more and more mainstream as consumers become more aware of the carbon footprint required to have meat as their main protein food source. Long term, with the growing world population we will all need to look for other food source, for sustainability and nutrition. We are super excited to help stores capture this growth market and have it more accessible for healthconscious consumers. If you would like to know more about Quorn please get in touch with Wade Vuletich, 021 888251.

LEARNING FROM OTHERS By Katherine Rich, Chief Executive, New Zealand Food & Grocery Council
One of the main benefits of belonging to a membership organisation is networking with others who do a similar job to you, enabling you to share experiences, ideas, and innovations, and to build contacts for the future.
T
his is especially valuable for those in smaller companies, where they get an opportunity to learn how companies with larger teams do things. This can be particularly valuable when it comes to breaking into new markets, where learning about how best to meet consumer expectations and how they do business is vital to success. It certainly saves having to reinvent the wheel, and can lead to strong alliances being forged and business being done. Of course, a professional organisation should always be on call to offer members advice, expertise, and education opportunities across a wide range of issues, and that’s a crucial part of their work – providing value every day. In many ways it’s that ‘learning from others’ where most value can come, and that was one of the reasons the Food & Grocery Council’s recent Half-Yearly Meeting and Annual General Meeting was so popular. Thanks to COVID and the various lockdowns, it was the first big face-to-face event we had held since our annual conference in November 2019 (and doesn’t that seem like such a long time ago), so we were expecting some pent-up demand from members to catch up with others. And so it proved. Nearly 200 members arrived at Eden Park, which was excellent considering some companies remain reluctant to travel at this time from out of town, and with some multinationals still maintaining restrictions on mass gatherings in accordance with what’s happening at their operations overseas. Chairman Mike Pretty (Heinz Wattie’s) opened the event by reminding members of the lows of the pandemic lockdowns, when they had to deal with ‘Christmas peaks’ on a regular basis, and of the “colossal rebound” since in consumer confidence. He quoted IRi research showing the rise of the market share of medium and small companies compared to large manufacturers, and the rise of online shopping – $1 billion more in 2020 than in 2019. We had two excellent guest speakers: Advertising Standards Authority CEO Hilary Souter, and Ports of Auckland General Manager Commercial Relationships Craig Sain. Hilary gave an update on the ASA’s work in dealing with advertising complaints, and said that of the 1151 received last year just 14% concerned food and beverage! Craig Sain began by acknowledging the delays in clearing containers that were resulting in shortages across a wide variety of goods, including many due to go on supermarket shelves (for example, pet food and food ingredients). The reasons were huge demand, a switch from manual to automated container operation, and dealing with lockdowns while making sure staff were safe in their bubbles. He assured members they were working as hard as they could to ensure freight both ways kept moving. On that note, FGC has spoken to logistics experts who say these shortages are likely to continue for the remainder of this year. That means there will remain tensions all along the supply chain to the supermarkets, so it’s probably timely to remind the sector what I said at the height of the rush on supermarkets last year: be nice to everyone who works in supply chain and logistics, through to those stacking the shelves, because they’re all having a very busy time. Economist Cameron Bagrie finished off a great event with his exclusive take for members on the Government’s Budget, which had been delivered just two hours earlier. Then it was on to the part many members were really looking forward – and what FGC is good at delivering – the networking event. It was a great way to finish our first face-to-face in 18 months, and now we look forward to the annual conference in November in Queenstown, where we will be doing our bit to help out the deep south in these tough times for them.

s supermarket retailers start to develop and look at richer shopper data to make decisions around ranging, FMCG manufacturers will need to understand a whole new series of metrics, how they reflect shopper behaviour and how they will shape the future of their brands and ranges. For some suppliers, it will take a number of years to become proficient at this. In the meantime, if you buy scan data there is already a very basic shopper metric available to you that many businesses ignore. Many FMCG business are focussed on top line sales (so look at $ scan sales/share) and/ or have P&L’s heavily reliant on volume to drive factory efficiencies and overhead recovery (look at volume scan sales/share). Often these two groups of scan data take precedent and become the focus internally for any ongoing analysis and tracking of success and trends. What is often missed is the power of analysing unit sales and how this set of data can help identify changes in shopper behaviour and brand choice, at least at a total level. Unit sales are a direct measure of how many

times a shopper has reached out, selected your product, put them in their trolley or basket and scanned and paid for them at checkout. Unit sales are reflective of the times a shopper has had your packaging in their hand; its format, its design, its functionality. When you compare unit sales, share and trends over time versus the competition, it paints a different story and provides complementary insights to add to the value and volume information already being looking at. Together these sets of measures can start to paint a more robust picture of shopper behaviour change at a category level (the WHAT) and should trigger a number of assumptions or questions your business will want to answer around the drivers of this change (the WHY). Whilst we know there are a number of factors that drive shoppers to select a pack from shelf (like price, promotions, location on shelf, number of facings); as a design agency we are focussed on creating packaging that ‘pops’ and works hard at standing out amongst the competitor set. At On Fire Design, we pride ourselves in
creating packs that help ignite brand growth, that have shelf standout, but that are true to your brand positioning and therefore leverage any existing brand assets. We believe our packaging design will give your products the best chance of being picked up off shelf. If you are keen on resetting or refreshing your brand or are developing a new brand altogether, reach out and talk to us about how we can create packaging that will wow shoppers and help drive unit (and $/volume) sales for you!" GET THE SUPPLY CHAIN EDGE
T
he last decade has seen a veritable feast of boutique New Zealand health food brands experience phenomenal growth, both in New Zealand and on the world stage. Their rapid adoption by major retailers has forced many to mature quickly as brands and also take on new technology to ensure their operational systems can cope with increasing demand. Alongside many of them has been Kiwi tech-integration company, Crossfire, which connects suppliers, retailers and logistics companies’ operating systems together to ensure things run smoothly, right across the supply chain. It’s helped some of New Zealand’s leading food suppliers evolve from small, largely paper-based, manual operations to highly efficient, market-leading export businesses. The secret ingredient; its managed integration service which creates a seamless flow between parties and removes the need for any in-house knowledge or software. While it services clients from a wide range of industries, Crossfire’s food manufacturing client list reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the country’s hippest, most adored, food brands. This includes Oob Organics, Honest Brew Beer, Raglan Coconut Yogurt, Karma Drinks and Little Island Coconut Creamery to name just a few. The company also has an impressive line-up of large retail and logistics clients including Mainfreight, Lion and Foodstuffs whilst also integrating to a range of large retailers such as Fonterra, The Warehouse

and Mitre 10 through to juggernauts like Amazon, Target, Walmart, Nordstrom, Bed Bath and Beyond and Costco. “Integration using the likes of Electronic Data Exchange (EDI) is not new – it’s been around for a number of years,” says Head of Crossfire, Henry Payne. “What is new is the increasing expectation from large retailers and the wider supply chain that suppliers now operate digitally. This not only gets rid of paper-based processes, but also shares vital data seamlessly between all key parties to ensure things run more efficiently.” Payne says managed integration with EDI helps businesses achieve that by automating their systems end-to-end and providing visibility across the entire supply chain of partners – from ordering and invoicing to logistics and deliveries. “It provides real-time data flow between all supply chain parties’ systems which maximises efficiency and ensures the whole process runs smoothly.” Payne says EDI integration has become a must-have for many Kiwi businesses that trade both in New Zealand and overseas. One such supplier is Omaha-based Oob, a leading provider of organic certified fruit, vegetables and ice cream. “We supply most of the major supermarket chains in NZ and Australia through multiple third party distribution companies,” says Oob CFO, Howard George. “It’s absolutely critical for our business to seamlessly integrate with our customers
and warehouse systems to ensure we deliver in full and on time. The team at Crossfire have made all that possible and it is now an integral part of our business operations.” Adam Turner, Supply Chain and Distribution Manager of Karma Drinks agrees. “Our company supplies hundreds of retailers throughout New Zealand and raises thousands of orders. The time and errors that have been saved with Crossfire’s EDI integration are countless.” Payne says Crossfire prides itself on not just being an out of the box solution because every client’s business is unique. “You can’t just plug someone in, send them off and away they go! There’s lots of little traps and pitfalls that clients can fall into and that’s where our experience comes into play. We provide a tailored solution for each business and then back that up with good support afterwards.” To find out more about how Crossfire helps Kiwi businesses streamline operations through integration, visit www.crossfireintegration.com.

FRESH EYES ON YOUR BUSINESS By Ryan Jennings
“From interviewing Kiwi business owners to creating a workshop for coaching them “After interviewing over 250 business owners at my time at Buy NZ Made, I heard some of the most powerful business stories after hitting stop on the podcast recording button. One business owner relayed how tough 2020 had been for them, as the unrelenting waves of challenges kept breaking at their front door. They had been so focussed on internal fire-fighting, their growth plans took a back seat. While it had hurt them, they were ready to go again. Another business owner had grown so quickly through the pandemic, they were scared of more sales and new marketing, fearful of hiring yet in their heart of hearts they wanted to scale their success. I started the Caché workshops for business owners to challenge the core pillars of what they do in sales and marketing and rethink their approach in a group of business owning peers just like them. Sure, sometimes business gets hard. You can get stuck in the endless newsfeed scroll or ad-hoc customer meetings. You might realise there’s a decision to make, but don’t want to make it on your own. Fresh eyes from business owners like you, that aren’t vested in the outcome…can provide the direction certainty you’re looking for. The Caché workshop is not an in-person training event. You are an active participant, working on your business for 30 days, with hands-on help from business owners like you. You join from where you work, the workshop format incorporates what you already know and then you receive frequent bursts of feedback from your business peers as you go live with the changes you've decided to make. You've already survived a global pandemic so you're not looking for Business101 lessons. We start with what's working in your sales pipeline, and what's working well across your marketing layers. You'll effectively use your time to apply insights and personalise the solution to your business environment. The Caché workshops is a place to explore the opportunities and the challenges and decide your course of marketing or sale action with confidence. In the workshop you will: 1. Boost revenue from customers you already know by discovering a way to organise all of those random moments of opportunity into a repeatable formula. 2. Create a value proposition that interprets your product benefits that builds a magnet for the right kind of new customers. No more mismatches. Your new messaging will accurately reflect the purpose of your business, instead of listing a series of disjointed features and benefits. 3. Build a set of five ads at five levels of product awareness. Your new ads will not only convert the low hanging grapes, you’ll learn how to avoid costly campaigns where the audience isn’t sufficiently motivated to take action. 4. Build a service for the food or beverage products you already manufacture. Your new service will increase your average revenue per customer and customer lifetime value, making your bottom line go bling. 5. Match up what you want to do with what the business needs to happen. You will be introduced to ways to growing your marketing and sale engine capability without hiring, then decide where you love to play and build a virtual team for everything else. This is a workshop where insights get applied. You’ll also have fun as you level up with a group of your business owning peers. If you’d like to be considered for our Sep/Oct Spring 2021 cohort, pre-register at: cache.co.nz/the-workshop.”

FOOD AND HOSPITALITY UNDERPIN A WAY OF LIFE
“A Maori whanau-owned business based in the Marlborough and Nelson regions, Kono - is home of Tohu and Kono wines, Hop Federation, Tutu Cider, Annies, Kono Seafood and Yellow Brick Road. It is an artisan producer that reflects the abundance of the region and as well as their responsibility as kaitiaki, guardians, of the land and sea. “For hundreds of years our ancestors have lived here, cultivating gardens and fishing the warm, safe bays. We have always been gardeners, fishermen, orchardists, artisans and providores and at the heart of our business is a strong sense of identity of where we’ve come from to where we’re going,” said CEO Rachel Taulelei. As the first Māori-owned wine company in the world, Tohu wine has been highly awarded at both domestic and international competitions. The Tohu Awatere Valley sauvignon blanc was rated the top Marlborough sav by Master of Wine Bob Campbell in 2020, with an equally prestigious Marlborough red varietal, the Tohu Awatere Valley pinot noir, claiming one trophy and five gold medals at international competitions across the last three vintages. “This wine comes from 18 year-old vines, especially selected for their premium grapes. This, combined with our passion for crafting pinot noir, means pure enjoyment in a glass and a wine that captures the essence of the Awatere Valley, Marlborough,” says Bruce Taylor, Tohu Wine Chief Winemaker. Included in the Kono beverages portfolio is Hop Federation craft beer, a boutique brewery based in Riuwaka that Kono purchased in August 2020 to strengthen the ties between hop grower and beer brewer. Kono has been growing hops for more than ten years and has 37 hectares of land dedicated to hop-growing. With over eight varietals of hops across four hop gardens, they believe that when hop grower meets beer brewer, great things happen. A timely second release of the popular Kono Hazy IPA beer, available during Matariki, is delicious proof of this working collaboration. Kono is also the home of Annies, who have been crafting natural fruit snacks from orchard fruits for over 30 years. At the heart of Annies is a team of passionate people dedicated to their mission; to create food that New Zealand consumers trust. Annies natural fruit snacks are made by airdrying New Zealand-grown sweet tangy crisp apples, combined with a selection of tasty summer fruit. “Our Fruit Strings and Fruit Jerky are two great new products that are made using the imperfect pieces from fruit bar production, an innovation that also helps us to achieve our goal of zero food waste. Fruit Strings and Fruit Jerky come in resealable pouches which make them great for snacking, sharing and for popping a small handful in lunchboxes,” said Olivia Martyn, Sales Manager Kono Fruit Bars – Export and Domestic With a love for the land and respect for the sea, we share our very best in food and beverage with New Zealand and the world.” For more information, please visit www.kono.co.nz.

This relaunch targets conscious consumers that care about the provenance of their food and the care and respect with which it was produced. This consumer segment has a greater propensity to purchase premium quality, lean, trimmed red meat that is sustainable and free from antibiotics. (Qualitative Research, 2020). Qualitative research (2020), has highlighted that consumers are looking for larger meat cuts when they slow cook, that provide a hearty meal, with the expectation of having leftovers for the next day. The Venison Diced (750g) is better positioned to meet these consumer needs, leveraging popular ‘low and slow’ cooking trends in the category this winter. The Silver Fern Farms Venison Diced (750g) serves six generous portions, while being simple to prepare with specific instructions for the oven or slow cooker. In addition to the deeper pack size, strong cues are communicated on-pack, identifying Venison Diced (750g) as an offering that is ‘made to be shared’ and a cut selected for slow cook. Best enjoyed together, Silver Fern Farms new 750g Venison Diced is available now. THE HIDDEN COSTS OF PAYMENT
For many retail businesses, managing costs is very high on the priority list. While it has been said that New Zealand is ahead of the curve when it comes to digital payments, a good proportion of customers at major retail outlets, especially at supermarket, DIY stores and entertainment venues, continue to choose to pay in cash. Besides, the associated transaction fees with digital payments continue to add significant overheads to retailers who are already struggling with the effects of the pandemic, so much so that the government is now moving to crack down on inflated merchant service fees charged by banks and payment processors to bring it to levels in line with countries in the region with regulatory schemes such as Australia. Cash in circulation has hit record highs during these times, with households cutting up their credit cards and resisting the temptation to borrow cheap money, hoarding cash for ‘rainy days’ and using cash as a budgeting tool by putting this week budget in cash on table at the start of the week saying this is what we have to spend this week. The public has also made it clear to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand that they have a mandate to ensure cash stays an acceptable method of payment for goods and services and that they will not tolerate moves to a completely cashless society.
REDUCTION IN BANK BRANCHES
Coupled with the fact that New Zealand is not going cash free anytime soon, we have also witnessed a large number of branch closures from our major retail banks. In an increasing number of regional towns, businesses no longer have access to their bank of choice or any bank branch at all. As such, retailers are increasingly looking for leadership from suppliers such as Glory Global (Glory has 68% of the Global Cash Recycling market – source: RBR 2020) to bring even more cost-efficient and secure cash management solutions to market.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CASH MANAGEMENT
It may surprise some, but many retailers still receive a steady percentage of their daily sales revenue in cash and in some regions, this can be as high as 20%. The efficient management of cash is an important requirement to running their businesses. Managing cash in the retail business is: • Manual and time consuming – both during shift changes and end of day reconciliation • Prone to errors and security risks • Main source of stress to staff and takes their focus away from their core responsibility to deliver a great customer experience.
INTRODUCING TREASURY MANAGEMENT SERVICE (TMS)
Major retailers have turned to Glory Cash Recyclers to streamline the in-store management of cash. The next iteration of Cash Management is now being rolled out to meet the new demands from retailers and in response to the closure of bank branches. Also known as Ubiqular Manage, TMS is a full spectrum layered software solution integrated into our Cash Recyclers designed to provide retailers with one point of contact for all cash management tasks – delivering global standards in point-of-sale automation, remote device monitoring, cash-in-transit management and Same Day Value to boost staff productivity, enhance store security and improve business cash flow. Against the backdrop of bank branches closing their doors, this cloud-based solution answers the need for retailers to fully automate cash related tasks, ensure exceptional system availability with remote monitoring and go even further to optimise business cash flow by integrating CIT and Banking into the same ecosystem. Two key components of TMS necessary to achieve this is a service that delivers Cash in transit (CIT) optimisation coupled with a new capability known as Same Day Value. CIT Optimisation has been available for a couple of years now. Enhanced by the intelligent use of data, the software provides a dynamically generated CIT schedule with individual cash profiles to predict cash volume requirements and optimise the number of CIT pick-ups via a managed service. Same Day Value provides the ability to receive funds on provisional balance into a nominate account on a daily basis: • Eliminates need to bank cash and associated staff risks • Transfers insurance risk to managed service partner • Requires fewer CIT interventions are required • Improves cashflow. The system will increasingly be scalable from those with minimal cash management requirements to large retailers with higher cash sales activity.
FIRST MOVERS – FOODSTUFFS
Glory showcased TMS at the recent Foodstuffs Expo 21 in Hamilton and the response from the many store owners who visited our stand was overwhelmingly positive. Andrew Graney, Owner and Operator of Pak n Save Tamatea Napier will be an early adopter of Glory’s Treasury Managed Service. “Cash is still an important payment method for us and outsourcing my Cash Requirements and automating my daily banking through Same Day Value just makes perfect sense to us. We can reduce our working capital, minimise CIT visits to take cost out of our business and most importantly free up time to focus on customer facing activities. We have had a Glory recycler since 2016 and are excited by the additional services they are bringing to market”.

INNOVATIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT EQUIPMENT Successful companies are always looking to adopt technology to save money and drive efficiencies. Clever technology can increase productivity, save time and make a big impact on the bottom line. Innovative equipment in the waste sector is a growing area and believe it or not, more exciting than it sounds! Look how far we progressed just in the last decade with Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS), self-checkout, replacing traditional light bulbs with LED, electronic signage, and electric cars. WHY DO WE SEE INNOVATION IN SOME COUNTRIES MUCH EARLIER THAN OTHERS? Innovation is driven by consumer demand. Throughout Europe, governments have imposed taxes to dispose of
32
I
landfill waste. The result? Innovative equipment has been designed to increase recyclables, reduce waste to landfill, and reduce the costs associated with the collection of recyclable materials. While kiwi's are top innovators across many sectors; sadly in the waste industry, we have a long way to go. Looking to Europe we have much to learn and we needn't 'reinvent the wheel'. Cutting edge technology already exists that not only has a significant impact on cost savings, it can also help NZ move towards a more sustainable future. Scandanavian countries set the bar high, they have been trailblazers with waste management innovation for decades. Since the Swedes discovered the value of recyclable materials they have focused their innovation on equipment to bale and harvest used paper, plastic and cardboard. Acknowledging these materials as a commodity generates revenue for
organisations rather than accruing costs to remove their waste products. Waste bins themselves have also gone through significant innovation. Traditionally waste receptacles are often stowed away in dark corners. Bins are known to be grimy things that hide the waste we throw away. And then comes the plastic liners (bags) that have been used by the millions. Plastic bags collecting waste rarely fit the bin correctly and half of the liner is folded back on itself to hold the bag in place. To empty the waste bin, the heavy liner would need to be lifted out, and a knot tied in the neck of the plastic bag. Anyone assigned to this mucky job would need to wash their hands immediately afterwards, the germs on this inside of the bag were soon exposed to everybody who handled the bag for its onward journey. Ironically it was Sten Gustaf Thulin, a Swedish engineer, who invented the modernday plastic bag in 1965. Thulin officially introduced the bag to the world after a packaging company he worked for, Celloplast, made it available to the marketplace. The real innovation took place 15 years later when another
Swedish company, PAXXO, invented the Longopac waste bag. This clever bin liner is a cassette up to 160 metres long, it is not placed inside a grimy bin but rather it is cradled on a modern and ergonomic stand. The liner is always in place (no more hunting for a bin bag!), it is never overfilled, it is always exactly the right size, and always 100% full when discarded. Such a simple concept, the best innovations always are. When Longopac is implemented throughout a company the impact is significant. Savings are gained in several areas. When air is squeezed from each bag, volumes can reduce by 50%, making a significant reduction on disposal costs. Segregation of waste (and recyclables) becomes easier, less waste is sent to landfill, less time is required to manage waste and waste management becomes much more hygienic, particularly relevant as all companies are now prioritising hygiene. TOTAL LIFE COST SAVINGS

W
hen purchasing capital equipment it is important ensure you are aware of the total life cost and not just the price tag. To undertake a successful investment in store equipment and machinery a little time spent in research will pay big dividends in the long run. Purchasing quality capital equipment should translate to: - A machine fit for purpose - Longer life of the unit - Highly efficient running both in terms of operation and resources - Less ongoing repairs and maintenance costs - More environmental and sustainable performance The team at Rollex Group works from this brief to source product from around the world to offer the best solutions for food processing equipment. Products such as the Eloma combi steam and bakery ovens, sourced from Germany, use on average 16% less power because of their patented direct steam system, that means steam is only generated on demand. Eloma
ovens also have an award winning heat exchanger so the hot waste water heats the cold incoming water resulting in water savings of up to 40%. Bizerba slicers & scales, Kolbe butchery equipment and Gruppo Fabbri wrappers are chosen because they have advanced reliability and longevity meaning significantly less carbon footprint. Fabbri have also introduced a home compostable film option, Nature Fresh film. The Nature Fresh film is fully certified and achieves both the industrial and home compostable standard, ie, will break down to a point that it is fully broken down and will pass through a sieve within 6 months. Launched at the recent expo the innovative Flexeserve heated cabinets have patented individual shelf cells and individual shelf temperature control that lowers the energy requirements for appropriate products. Individual shelves can be turned off later in the day if not in use. Heated air is reticulated within the cells and the tight air curtains retain the hot air within the unit with minimal heat loss resulting in significantly less power usage. The
air technology (as opposed to current heated shelf or Infrared technology that uses conductive or direct heat) means food quality is maintained for much longer periods lifting sales revenues by up to 40% whilst also significantly reducing food waste. The future of supermarket is in quicker, contactless, easy payment checkout experience. Rollex Group has sourced through its Bizerba partnership, Supersmart – The world’s first validation and loss prevention system for Scan & Go. The Supersmart system has the potential to eliminate 90% of the losses that occur from Scan & Go whilst still retaining the advantages of very quick checkout and payment and reductions in labour. Every single transaction is validated before payment by a combination of weight sensor, image recognition, shopping patterns and collected customer data. Supersmart has the potential, to deliver enhanced customer satisfaction through quick checkout, reduced losses and significant labour savings for the supermarket. Leading supermarket chains around the world are now looking at this technology to advance their Scan & Go business and all done with a justifiable return on investment. Using a solution based model and sourcing innovative products, Rollex Group can offer supermarkets daily cost savings, high productivity and energy efficient solutions from their equipment purchases. All backed up with an efficient and timely service and spare parts team.

INVEST IN THE BEST There is no doubt that sustainability and waste-reduction is top of mind for most businesses, particularly for the grocery industry. But dealing with waste and recycling can be quite a headache and Kiwi businesses are looking to be smarter about the way in which they manage and dispose of waste. This, combined with wanting to become more environmentally conscious, means it comes as no surprise that companies are looking to invest in the best waste management products available to help them achieve their sustainability goals. Pioneer Group (since 1965) is a New Zealand family owned and operated, waste and recycling equipment business, located in Whangarei. The team have been supplying top quality New Zealand made and imported machinery for recycling and waste handling for the past 20 years. It is Pioneer’s mission to help preserve our clean environment by helping businesses in New Zealand recycle and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. High quality steel bins for the waste industry are also fabricated on-site in Whangarei. Pioneer’s business model is based around helping businesses both large and small to reduce, reuse, and recycle. While the vertical balers are always popular, particularly the High Density HSM Cardboard Balers, it’s the industrial sized horizontal balers and Auger compactors that are seeing an increase in demand
to meet the needs of larger businesses that generate excessive volumes of cardboard. It isn’t all about the machinery though, Pioneer provides businesses professional advice and consultation to help them achieve their waste and recycling goals. Prior to joining the team at Pioneer Group, Key Account Manager Dave Morello worked in the Waste Services industry for over six years helping some of NZ’s largest businesses manage their waste related needs, with a focus on sustainability. Morello’s passion is driving innovative, sustainable waste reduction initiatives. Helping businesses minimise their waste footprint and reduce costs is all part of the service he provides. “When it comes to sustainability, the team at Pioneer are incredibly active and knowledgeable in providing New Zealand businesses with the opportunity to repurpose their existing cardboard waste,” said Arne Strachan, Owner and Managing Director for Pioneer Group. “Our HSM Profipack Voidfill cardboard shredders are definitely a winner. Customers can now repurpose their existing cardboard waste into 100 percent
sustainable cardboard voidfill,” said Strachan. “We truly take the stress out of waste management for you by providing the most effective solutions available. baby SUNRICE ENTERS BABY CATEGORY SunRice has launched its firstever product in the baby food category, a smooth baby rice cereal made with over 95% Australian rice. Recommended for babies four months and over, SunRice Baby Rice Cereal provides a good source of iron and is grown with care in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Known for being clean and green, the Riverina is one of the key food bowl areas of Australia. SunRice Head of Marketing Andrew Jeffrey said SunRice Baby Rice Cereal comes in two flavours, Original and
Mixed Vegetable, and is made in Australia from Australian ingredients. “SunRice Baby Rice Cereal is made with rice grown in the clean and green Riverina region of Australia – home of the cuddly koala,” said Jeffrey. “We know how important it is for parents to feed their babies products that they trust. Providing a good source of iron and with no added sugar and no artificial colours or flavours, SunRice Australian Baby Rice Cereal is the perfect choice for a first food that supports your baby’s healthy growth and
development.” New Zealand Nutrition Foundation CEO Sarah Hanrahan said baby rice cereal is recommended as a first food for infants by both Plunket and the Ministry of Health. “Baby rice cereal is a great first food for babies. It is plain, which is ideal for babies who have only ever tasted breast milk or formula. It is also iron rich, which is beneficial as baby’s iron stores start to deplete at around six months and need to be replenished,” said Hanrahan.
“When starting with solids, your baby is still getting almost everything they need from breast milk or formula. The weaning period is about getting them used to solids through food that is plain, smooth and soft, to avoid baby rejecting solids. This is why the Ministry of Health recommends baby rice cereal as a first food for babies.” n

MAKING A DIFFERENCE, ONE NAPPY AT A TIME
Noopii is a New Zealand owned & operated, social enterprise business with a difference. Launched in 2019, Noopii® was created by two hard working kiwi mums who saw a gap in the market for a unisex, disposable nappy option that was performance driven, safer for babies’ skin and kinder to the environment. Noopii® Eco-luxe products, paper packaging and cardboard freight cartons are made from 85% sustainable and renewable materials, their nappies and pants contain plant based components and naturally antibacterial New Zealand made Manuka hydrosol, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, preventing nappy rash and protecting your baby’s delicate skin. In addition, they’re free from dioxins, fragrance, chlorine, latex and lotion - only using the most soft and natural materials next to your baby’s skin. Noopii® nappies and pants are performance driven, with their super absorbent materials wicking away moisture from baby’s skin and locking wetness into the nappy core, they provide up to 12-hours of leak protection. The ultra soft cotton blend back sheet is printed with food-safe inks and are designed with super stretch leg cuffs and extra wide elastic waist band for the perfect fit and exceptional comfortable wear. In addition, Noopii® products are competitively priced with other brands, offering families a premium and affordable nappy option, which is currently the most sustainable disposable nappy option on the market. Noopii® nappies and pants are available in six sizes, to meet every baby’s needs regardless of weight, size or stages of development. The Noopii® range is always growing too, currently they have great wet wipes options; the range includes 100% biodegradable bamboo baby wipes and antibacterial travel wipes, the perfect additions for nappy bags, handbags and the glove compartment of cars, for busy parents on the go. Noopii® has strong environmental and social drivers at the core of the business. With each pack sold, a percentage of profits from every pack purchased goes toward one of their native habitat and animal recovery organisations; these include the Yellow-eye Penguin Trust, Forest & Bird and Project Jonah New Zealand. Noopii® also works to offset their carbon footprint by channelling a portion of profits from packs to Trees That Count, a native tree planting initiative, turning donations and proceeds from businesses into tree planting action, contributing to native reforestation across New Zealand, with their goal of planting One Billion Trees by 2028. Noopii® are passionate about campaigning and furthering education in mother and baby wellbeing and support women throughout all stages of motherhood with their maternal and fetal health programme. Noopii® truly is the best option for you, your baby and the health of our planet. n

BETTER THAN ITS COW-NTERPARTS Sheep milk, one of nature’s true super milks!
F
rom its dedicated farms all over the central North Island, the team at Spring Sheep are excited to bring you what they believe is one of the gentlest milks in the world. Gentle on the land and gentle on tummies. New Zealand grass-fed sheep milk is truly special. Not only is it incredibly nutritious and delicious, a recent study by AgResearch & the University of Auckland has shown that sheep milk is not just compositionally different to cows' milk but has inherent properties which means we digest it differently. Importantly, the proteins in sheep milk are digested and absorbed more readily than its cow-nterparts. Demand for sheep milk is growing rapidly around the world and is highly sort after in the early life nutrition category. In response to that demand, Spring Sheep recently launched its Gentle Sheep Toddler Milk Drink; specially formulated milk drink for 1-3 year olds whose regular diet may need some extra help. Enhanced with high quality essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that support optimal growth and development, it is ideal for all active toddlers. It also contains Omega 3 DHA and Omega 6 ARA and GOS and FOS prebiotics and is naturally an A2type milk. What’s more, all of Spring Sheep’s products strictly adhere to their ‘No Nasties’ policy, and do not contain any GMOs, artificial growth hormones, soy allergens, cheap fillers, added table sugars, artificial colours or additives. To learn more about the story or to see where the milk is coming from check out the unique traceability QR code on the bottom of each can for the product journey story. The team at Spring Sheep is dedicated to pursuing high animal welfare standards and reducing the environmental footprint of the dairy industry in New Zealand. Spring Sheep is proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated. n

MULTI-AWARD WINNING RANGE Founded by Joanna Jensen in 2012, Childs Farm was created for her two daughters who both suffered with sensitive skin from a young age.
U
sing naturally derived ingredients and essential oils, Joanna created a multi-award winning range of mild, kind and delicious smelling products formulated especially for newborns, babies and children. The entire range is now dermatologist and pediatrician approved as suitable for sensitive skin and suitable for those with skin that may be prone to eczema.
The range features bright, colourful, environmentally friendly packaging, enhanced by irresistible natural fragrances to make bathtime fun again. To top it all off, the vast majority of the range is registered with the Vegan Society and has been awarded the Leaping Bunny certification from Cruelty Free International. Childs Farm hit the shelves in major UK pharmacy Boots in 2014, and other major retail chain stores soon followed. Since then the brand has gone from strength to strength, becoming a leading skincare brand for children in the UK. This success has been helped along by vocal fans and brand ambassadors on social media who have shared their stories of the difference Childs Farm has made. Childs farm has also been a hit with celebrities too, with Sophie Ellis Baxter recently partnering with the brand after using the range for her boys over the years. In addition to caring for skin, Childs Farm is passionate about our planet - having obtained certified Carbon Neutral status last year, and all of their plastic bottles contain at least 30% post-consumer recycled plastic. However, Childs Farm is currently working towards 100% ‘prevented ocean plastic’ bottles, which is recycled plastic collected from coastal and river areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution - saving 109 tonnes of virgin plastic. Childs Farm has chosen to offset more than their measured CO2 emissions of nearly 400 tonnes by investment into tree planting, reducing deforestation and forest degradation in Brazil, a breathing space improved cooking stoves initiative in India and a UK tree planting scheme. Distributed by Image Gallery, Childs Farm has been available online in New Zealand since late 2019. Starting with a small range of the brand’s top selling products, the Childs Farm range in New Zealand has now grown to include their SPF 50+ sunscreens and moisturising hand creams with a small range of products available at Unichem and Life Pharmacies as well as in Countdown supermarkets. LOOKING FOR A JOB IN A (SORT OF) POST-COVID WORLD
As an experienced (old) career coach and recruiter I’ve seen a few downturns and shocks to the job market in my time; the dotcom bubble, Y2K and the GFC all spring to mind. They all pale into significance in comparison to the last year which has seen seismic and irreversible changes to the market. As we enter a new, flexible and part virtual world it’s worth reminding yourself that the fundamentals of job hunting remain the same. Whilst the market is certainly “noisy’ there’s no doubt the situation here in New Zealand is far from bleak. SEEK have reported record job postings in March and April and the average response levels to a job ad are definitely on the wane. Now is a good time to be looking for a new role, or at least considering a career move. Key is to success is being able to articulate your core proposition, your key themes, your sales pitch. I work with a broad and diverse group of coaching clients from just about every discipline and industry imaginable. From ‘second-jobbers’, through junior / middle management and into the heady heights of GMS, Directors and CEOs. The process is broadly the same. Can they sell themselves effectively and succinctly to a range of audiences. Can they answer the question “Tell me about yourself?” in an interview situation. Once you have nailed your core proposition it is time to rebuild your story from top-line elevator pitch, through the CV and into your LinkedIn profile. Your aim is to build a well evidenced and layered story that you can expand on during the interview, whether that be in person, over the phone, online or recorded video. So now you are ready to press go, to test the market, to apply for that dream job. What you now need is a proactive and structured plan of attack. There are only three ways to find a job; advertisements, recruitment agencies and networks. The first two avenues are basically reactive and there is only so much you can do to influence the outcome. Networks (both direct and indirect) are where you can really make a difference and increase your chances of success. A random sample of recent coaching assignments clearly evidences proactive networking as being the most common method of securing a role. Use LinkedIn to the max – it’s a hugely useful tool when it comes to networks, knowledge, raising your profile and all round up-skilling. Finally, make sure you have some goals in place. What are you looking to achieve in your next role. Is it a stepping stone to something else, something bigger, something different. If you don’t have a clear plan in place it’s very easy to find yourself back on the market in 6 months’ time. What else? Reach out for support where necessary. I’m clearly biased but there is a lot to be said for seeking an objective opinion from a third party who can help you identify what you want to do, what you are good at doing, what you want to do next and how you are going to get there.
