Editor's Note Dear Readers, I am pleased to introduce to you the new issue of Smart Energy Magazine (Vol III/ Issue VI). We have been bringing to you topics covering different aspects of the solar and wind industry in India, enriching your knowledge and giving you fresh perspectives on policies, technology developments, new applications, and national and international scenarios.

Rooftop PV systems offer several advantages like savings in transmission and distribution losses, low gestation period, no requirement of additional land, improvement of the tail-end grid voltage, higher self consumption of solar electricity and local employment generation. With a strong commitment to increase the renewable sources based energy capacity to 175 GW by 2022, India has a target to install 100 GW of solar energy capacity. Of this 40 GW would be the share of grid connected solar PV rooftop. This target has injected increased ambition into the sector. With proactive steps from the central and state government and various initiatives like subsidy and accelerated depreciation benefits Solar Rooftop are growing fast and is expected to cross 1GW installed capacity by the end of the year. News Updates Adani Dedicates to Nation World’s Largest Solar Power Plant in TN Adani Green Energy (Tamil Nadu) Ltd, a part of the Adani Group, a globally integrated infrastructure player, announced in a release that it has dedicated the World’s largest solar power plant of 648 megawatts (MW) to the Nation.

The plant is set up at Kamuthi, Ramanathapuram in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with an investment of around Rs 4,550 crore.

The plant is part of the state government’s ambitious yet highly achievable target of generating 3,000 MW as per its new solar energy policy unveiled in 2012.

The Company sourced equipments and machinery from various parts of the World to set up the entire 648 MW within a record time of 8 months. A total of around 8500 personnel worked hard day & night for averaging out about 11 MW of installation in a day to set up the plant in the stipulated time.

The massive plant comprises of 3,80, 000 foundations, 25,00,000 solar modules, 27,000 Mt of structure, 576 nos of inverters, 154 nos of transformers and 6000 km length of cables. The entire plant was completed in all shape and ready to generate the 648 MW of clean and green energy. The entire 648 MW is now connected with Kamuthi 400 KV substation of Tantransco making it the world’s largest solar power plant at a single location ■

News Updates Tata Power completes Welspun Renewable Energy acquisition, appoints Chetan Tolia as CEO Tata Power announced that it has completed acquisition of Welspun Renewables Energy and has appointed Chetan Tolia as CEO of the newly bought firm.

"Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, a 100% subsidiary of Tata Power, has completed acquisition of 100% shareholding in Welspun Renewables Energy Private Limited (WREPL) and its subsidiaries," an official state-

ment said.

WREPL has about 1,141 mw of renewable power projects comprising about 990 mw solar power projects and about 150 mw of wind power projects. Of the renewable portfolio, more than 1,000 mw of capacity is operational and the balance capacity is under advanced stages of implementation.

Vikram Solar taps teamtechnik for module expansion Vikram Solar has partnered with teamtechnik, a market leader in production technology based in Freiberg am Neckar (Germany), to design production lines and supply plant technology to support the company’s expansion plans. Both companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the collaboration in the presence of Hon’ble Finance Minister, West Bengal, Shri Amit Mitra. Vikram Solar is set to expand its module production from current 500 MW to 2 GW by 2019.

The company plans to invest more than INR 400 crore in the project, creating around 3,000 additional jobs. Vikram Solar’s module production capacity, which is currently at 500 MW, is to be expanded to 2 GW by 2019. teamtechnik will supply solutions and machines for solar module production and put them into operation as well as train operations managers, process engineers and service technicians at Vikram Solar. The companies are also planning a future collaboration in the area of materials research, process optimization and production technology, with the intention of further improv-

ing efficiencies while continuing to reduce module costs. The collaboration with teamtechnik supplements existing collaborations with Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and Centrotherm.

RE-Invest 2017 Rescheduled to Feb 2017 The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy recently issued a fresh notification stating that the global investors’ summit will now be held on 15-17 February 2017 and has been shifted to Gandhi Nagar in the state of Gujarat. The summit was earlier scheduled for 14-16 March 2017 at New Delhi.

The summit is an invitation to projects developers, invests, manufacturers and other stakeholders by the Indian government. The first such summit was held in February 2015 months after the Narendra Modi-led government announced 100 GW solar power and 175 GW overall renewable energy capacity target by 2022.

SunEdison, SkyPower Global, Sindicatum Carbon, Trina Solar, First Solar, Yingli Solar and SolarReserve were among the international companies that made commitments to set up largescale solar and wind energy projects in India. A total of 29 banks and financial institutions also committed to provide debt finance to more than 70 GW renewable energy capacity ■

IBC Solar bags 22.5-MWp EPC deal in India

ABB India, the power and automation technology major, inaugurated a new solar inverter manufacturing facility in Bangalore city. The facility is set to double the solar inverter manufacturing capacity of the company. The factory was inaugurated by Sanjeev Sharma, CEO and Managing Director, ABB India and Robert Itschner, Global Managing Director for Power Conversion, ABB Group.

German photovoltaic (PV) systems specialist IBC Solar AG announced that it will provide the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for a 22.5-MWp photovoltaic (PV) park in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

The expansion follows earlier milestones achieved by ABB India last year – the first company to double the solar inverter installed base to 2GW in a span of five months. A first for the nation as well. ABB inverters manufactured at Nelamanagala, Bengaluru help power 40 percent of the utility scale solar power generated in the country.

IBC Solar will work on the scheme under a contract with its existing customer LN Bangur Group, which is the project’s investor. The parent will handle the engineering services and technical supervision, whilst its Indian subsidiary -- IBC Solar Projects Pvt Ltd -- will be the one to build the facility.

The solar farm will be located near Phalodi, Jodhpur district.

Construction works at the site are due to kick off in October 2016, while commissioning is scheduled for April 2017.

Govt plans $400 million fund for renewable energy firms In an attempt to boost renewable energy the government is coming up with a clutch of policy measures to be rolled out soon.

These policies are meant to protect clean energy producers from payment delays by distribution firms, and the latter from the eroding market for conventional grid-connected power due to wider adoption of roof-top solar power generation.

New and renewable energy secretary Upendra Tripathy briefed the media on the sidelines of the Renewable Energy India Expo in Greater Noida that the government is in the process of instituting a $400 million (over Rs.2,600 crore) fund sourced from World Bank that will be used to protect clean energy producers from payment delays by distribution firms.

Tripathy said the government was also exploring the possibility of setting up a scheme that will compensate power distribution companies (discoms) that lose a part of their market for conventional power from the grid due to the increased adoption of rooftop solar power projects by institutions and households.

“We have to find a mechanism for compensating distribution firms for loss of market share.

We are now studying which entities are losing revenue and the extent of their loss in different cities arising from rooftop power projects,” Tripathi said.He furthered added that the fund will be administered either by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency or the Solar Energy Corp. of India ■

In a setback to India, the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s appellate body upheld the rulings of a panel which stated the Indian government’s power purchase agreements with solar firms were “inconsistent” with international norms.

“The appellate body (of the WTO) upheld each of these panel conclusions appealed by India,” the WTO stated.

The US had, in 2014, filed the complaint before the global trade body alleging discrimination against American firms.

The US Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman said the WTO appellate body had issued a report in favour of the Obama administration’s challenge to India’s “domestic content requirements (DCR)” under its National Solar Mission (NSM). Since India enacted these requirements in 2011, which requires solar power developers to use Indian-manufactured cells and modules, American solar exports to India have fallen by more than 90 per cent, he said.

The Obama administration, he said, strongly supports rapid deployment of solar energy worldwide, including in India.

“Local content requirements are not only contrary to WTO rules, but actually undermine our efforts to promote clean energy by requiring the use of more expensive and less efficient equipment, making it more difficult for clean energy sources to be cost-competitive,” he alleged ■

News Updates Inox Wind bags cumulative order worth Rs 2,000 cr

Magnolia Solar teaming with InSolare Energy to bring its thin-film PV to market

Wind energy solutions provider Inox Wind announced that it has bagged cumulative orders worth over Rs 2,000 crore for the supply and installation of wind turbine generators of 350 megawatt (MW). In a press release, Inox Wind announced that it has got “new orders for the supply and installation of wind turbine generators of 350 MW in total to several repeat customers. The orders cumulatively are worth more than Rs. 2,000 crore”.

The projects will be executed on turnkey basis across locations in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The contracts include supply and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as multiyear operations and maintenance agreements. The orders are expected to be commissioned

by March 2017 ■

Magnolia Solar has signed a teaming arrangement with India-based InSolare Energy to bring Magnolia’s patented solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to market. Magnolia is a subsidiary of Ecoark Holdings, a provider of a growing suite of proprietary technologies and services.

The initial purchase order is for a study of feasibility for applying Magnolia’s thin-film solar PV technology to an existing installation on a commercial property.

“We are very excited to be teaming with Magnolia and the Ecoark team,” said Sunit Tyagi, Chairman of InSolare.

“Ecoark’s access to the commercial market in the U.S., combined with Magnolia’s patented, thin-film solar technology, opens the door to significant opportunity for us to drive revenue and profitability outside our footprint in India.”

ABB Transforms Indian Grid ABB has developed, manufactured and energized a 1,200-kilovolt (kV) ultra-high-voltage power transformer to support India’s plans to build a 1,200 kV transmission system, supplementing the existing 400 kV and 800 kV transmission grid as demand for electricity increases. The transformer was manufactured and

tested at ABB’s state-of-the-art Vadodara facility in India.

This 1.2 million volt transformer represents the highest alternating current voltage level in the world and is installed at the national test station at Bina, Madhya Pradesh in Central India, as part of a collaborative

initiative by the country’s central transmission utility, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID).

India planning new measures to promote domestic manufacturing of Solar power equipment The Indian government is planning new measures to promote domestic manufacturing of solar power equipment following another setback from the World Trade Organization earlier this month.

According to reports, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has prepared a draft policy to offer subsidies to all companies that manufacture solar power modules and other equipment in the country.

Vikram Solar Showcases New Products at Solar Power International

odule manufacturer Vikram Solar presented a range of new products, including a prototype of the high efficiency bifacial solar module ELDORA Duplex, at Solar Power International (SPI) in Las Vegas from 12-15 September 2016. The new monocrystalline module is suitable for both roofmounted and freestanding installations, and particularly excels in settings where a large quantity of light is reflected by the ground.

Here, the 60-cell module configuration is able to achieve outputs

in excess of 320 watts, while the 72-cell configuration reaches over 360 watts.

The bifacial module is designed for systems with a maximum voltage of 1500 volts. Module efficiencies above 19% are currently being achieved. SoLayTec launches new product and proves cell efficiency gain of 0,2% compared to PECVD AlOx

D

uring the last two exhibitions, new products of Tempress and SoLayTec were revealed.

Especially for the next PERC2.0 expansions those products are highly requested by the market.

The 2nd Generation InPassion ALD combined with the newest direct PECVD can annually produce up to 130MW including the integrated anneal process.

Furthermore, two weeks ago the 25th Intersolar exhibition and EUPVSEC conference were held in Munich. In several presentations the InPassion ALD was an important topic. Research institute Imec presented its latest results regarding n-type IBC cells on 156x156mm2 using Al2O3 from SoLayTec. Furthermore Hanwha Q Cells presented its evaluation results of InPassion ALD versus MW-PECVD and SoLayTec gave an overview of its successful PERC integration project of one of their key customers.

PERC2.0 “For PERC integration the Al2O3 ALD machine only, is not the complete solution. A customer also needs a PECVD capping machine for covering the Al2O3 layer. So far a customer needed at least 6 direct PECVD tubes to meet the ALD output of 3600wph. Since 10th SNEC exhibition in Shanghai Tempress introduced the SPECTRUM PECVD which has at least the same nett capacity as the InPassion ALD. So now capex wise we have a highly cost effective solution available for our customers”, said Roger Görtzen, cofounder of SoLayTec and director marketing and sales. “Especially if we take into account that the uptime, throughput, TMA usage and efficiency gain is even better

than our main competitor. On top of that, the newly introduced 2nd generation InPassion ALD has been improved a lot. The main point that has been improved is the uptime and nett throughput of the machine”, according to Roger Görtzen.

Munich Intersolar / EUPVSEC During the 32nd PVSEC in Munich, Hanwha Q CELLS published the results of the evaluation of the InPassion ALD and compared the results with their mainstream MW-PECVD system. The main conclusion is that the InPassion ALD gives an 0.15% up to 0.25% better efficiency for multi-cSi PERC compared to MW-PECVD AlOx. This gives a benefit in extra margin for the customer of about 300.000Euro/year. “At SoLayTec we are very proud of this result, confirming our efficiency benefits at an important tier one cell manufacturer”, said Roger Görtzen.

Since 2011 Tempress and SoLayTec are both part of the Industrial Affiliation program within imec. This week the imec

research team and its partners presented the latest results of their large area n-type IBC cells of 22.8%. In the past imec already proved that ALD Al2O3 was a good passivation material for p+ emitters, but in this work the ALD from SoLayTec plays a significant role to passivate also the n+ emitter.

In the past standard passivation method was always by using Wet thermal SiOx, but now also for IBC concepts the gain is +0,3% by using the ALD Al2O3 layer.

“For our customer this gives a wider opportunity to use our ALD system, besides PERC applications also for other high efficiency cell concepts like: n-PERT, IBC, PERL and the latest Topcon approach”, states Roger Görtzen.

Furthermore the process team of SoLayTec recently performed a PERC integration at one of our customers in Asia. This successful ramp-up of a standard multi cell line into mono PERC reached a daily capacity of 50.000 PERC solar cells, with a stable cell efficiency of 20.6% ■

RenewSys has two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India.

The first facility based at Bengaluru manufactures Encapsulants (1.1 GW) and Backsheets (1.8 GW).

These manufacturing technologies are sourced from Europe. The second facility is based at Fab City Hyderabad for the manufacture

of 30 MW of Cells and 100 MW of Modules. The commissioning of a new 100 MW Cell line is currently at an advanced stage and the commissioning of a new 100 MW Module line is in its last phase of completion. Both the facilities have ISO certified QMS Systems and UL & TUV certified products.

RenewSys believes in innovations and therefore, the company has invested significantly in setting up R&D Centres at Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The Bengaluru

.With the WTO ruling against DCR in India, how do you at RenewSys plan to overcome the challenges of low-cost imported solar modules?

We feel that WTO ruling against DCR will impact the Indian manufacturing sector, but, in the long term scenario, the industry will be able to build-up its own surviving mechanism. Slowly, the cost components, technologies and quality perceptions are becoming global. The only cost which may vary significantly between the companies having low and high price competitiveness will be economies of scale. India still has to build-up sustainable manufacturing capacities similar to many global players. Currently, domestic PV manufacturing sector is under tremendous price pressure and seriously looking at ways and means to survive. The case with RenewSys is not much different.

However, RenewSys is seriously working with its partners on cost reductions, improvement in products and operational efficiencies.

We believe that such turbulences are temporary and light of the day is not too far.

.What is it that you would be looking forward to from the policy that the government is working on to boost large- scale solar manufacturing in India?

industry is still young. The government must continue the capital subsidies on the equipment and machineries. GST is the big subject in hand, to be understood in perspective of PV. How does GST handle the exemptions given through duty on imports of raw materials? How does GST address the issue of inverted duty structure going forward?

The drive of the Government to test and benchmark the quality of modules must be implemented in a due course. We as a component manufacturer often find spurious components in the market from substandard suppliers and want the policy to be extended to Encapsulants, Backsheets and cells as well.

.How important is the Indian operation for the future growth and what role do you envision the Indian operation to play in the overall growth of the company?

RenewSys is a part of Enpee Group of companies with a manufacturing experience of 55 years. We are a global company having offices in UK, UAE, South Africa and Nigeria.

We have manufacturing setups in India and Nigeria. The Indian

operation was our first strategic venture in the PV sector, which is now positioned uniquely in the manufacturing space. With over five decades of experience in diversified industries so far, we have been the preferred suppliers for our various products in India and exporting significant quantities to overseas markets. We are looking at other avenues in the PV value chain, the territory of which shall be decided depending on the specific products as may be the case.

India’s Surging Renewable Energy Sector

ince assuming office in May 2014, the NDA Government has set ambitious targets in the power sector and the renewables segment. Presently, India has the fifth-largest power generation portfolio, with an installed capacity of 304.7 GW in July 2016. It is also the fourth-largest wind energy producer in terms of installed capacity, following China, the US and Germany. The country now targets 175 GW of capacity from renewables by 2022, of which 60 GW will come from wind energy.

Thanks to this, the renewables sector has attracted investments of more than $3.16 billion, with total installation being around 64% of the country’s total grid interactive renewable energy capacity.

According to experts, this is equal to curbing carbon emissions by more than 58.56 million tonnes annually – or akin to planting more than 1.76 billion trees.

Besides solar, wind energy plays an important role in India’s power plans. At present, India’s total wind power installed capacity is about 27 GW, which accounts for around 9% of the country’s total installed capacity. This will rise by 4,300 MW in 2016-17 and is set to grow 30% annually, with most capacity additions by Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, among others. Before this, the highest capacity addition in wind happened in 2015-16, when 3,300 MW was installed – a growth of 43% over the previous year and a record until then.

That India’s clean energy drive is gathering momentum is clear from the fact that green energy has overtaken the capacity of large hydroelectricity projects that once supplied the most electricity.

As per statistics released by the Central Electricity Authority, out of India’s total capacity of around 304.7 GW on 31 July this year, the total capacity of renewable energy, expanded to 44.2 GW, surpassing hydropower at 42.8 GW. But the nation still depends upon thermal power since this has a much higher installed capacity, while supplies from renewables plants are not available consistently.

Nonetheless, clean energy’s soaring capacity marks a momentous milestone in India’s energy scenario and heralds its rise as the

world’s fastest-growing renewable energy nation. Given its immense market potential, companies from across the globe are participating in India’s auctions for solarpowered projects.

Not surprisingly, Union Minister for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal has set a stiff Rs 600,000 crore target for building renewable energy plants, which includes 100,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2022. This is five times the previous target of 20,000 MW. The Government has also made clear its intentions of achieving 40% cumulative electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy sources by 2030, to be undertaken via transfer of technology and lowcost international funding, which would include the Green Climate Fund.

The rise in renewables’ capacity is practical and fortunate for India. Although the country has huge potential for hydroelectricity, massive protests against its environmental impact have stalled most projects in Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

sands of hectares of land, displacement of local communities and lack of proper rehabilitation of the displaced. These have redflagged hydropower as being environmentally unfriendly and economically unviable, with negative outcomes outweighing benefits.

Signalling its steadfast commitment towards clean energy, the Union Government recently announced plans to double investments for clean energy research in the next five years from $72 million to $145 million. The Government has also announced India will be collaborating with Britain in setting up a Joint Virtual Clean Energy Centre to counter challenges in solar energy. It will also be launching a new Research Track on Smart Energy Grids and Energy Storage under the India-US Partnership to promote clean energy research.

arget of 40 GW roof top installations by 2022 is the wish of our Government, but till now we have not even crossed 1 GW target. Will balance 39 GW installation be completed within next 6 years is the question to be answered.

For this purpose let us do SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.)

Before I proceed on this analysis, I prefer to categorize the rooftop installation into: ii Residential Sector – 1KW to 10 KW ( house holds only) ii Commercial & Institutional Sector – 10 KW to 100 KW (ex: shops, schools, show rooms, malls, Hostels)

ii Industrial & Public Utility Sector - 100 KW to 1000 KW( ex: Industry roof tops, hospitals airports, stadiums, railway stations etc)

STRENGTHS: ii India is blessed with 300 days sunlight in a year than any other country, so more power generated in a year per system with same estate area which means maximum utilization of the system. ii Land cost is zero. A typical 10 KW installation needs approx.

80 sqm space on the roof and it needs minimum supporting structure and little space to house invertor and battery - say under staircase or corner of the garage.

The owner need not invest on land and hence land cost is not accounted in the cost. ii The system is secure and protected from vandalism and theft as installation is in owner’s premises or boundary. ii Maintenance and cleaning of panels can be done with water available at site with a hose pipe, which can be carried out by owner himself or by staff. ii As power generated by solar is consumed for captive use and thus local data generated and monitoring system will give the real feedback about quality and environmental impact on the system throughout the nation.

Such data in future will help the system designer and integrator to optimize or standardize system suitable to specific location to get more yields over a period.

WEAKNESSES: ii In spite of 40% share is allocated for rooftop out of 100 GW target by 2022, the awareness and momentum is very slow. This can be seen from the fact that till now 7.8 GW has been installed out of 100 GW in which 12.5% from utility sector and just 2.5% in roof top sector. ii Many state government policy and tendering procedure is not very transparent and much time is lost in the procedure than production of power. For utility sector, the land and finance is major blockade whereas for rooftop this is not so.

In spite of this advantage, rooftop installation is going slow. ii There are no standards set in selection of modules or BOS which has bearing on the function and life of product. In many

cases design and installation is substandard. ii The gateway to go through MNRE registered Channel partners for installation and sourcing of BOS components looks good but it leads to manipulation to take advantage of situation. ii Though IEC certification is mandatory for modules installed, I have come across the modules installed which are subcontracted and labeled with installer’s name which might not have gone through certification agencies. ii Inexperienced installers and integrators are growing in numbers as the trained installers are few in respective areas. ii The subsidy route is cumbersome and not straight forward and many installers are not coming forward to invest upfront on this scheme as they are not sure when the subsidy can be recovered from respective agencies.

ii Banks are not aggressive in promoting rooftop installations on same lines of car and housing loans to customer as they are not sure of bankability of the rooftop project.

OPPORTUNTIES: ii It is very good time to speed up roof top installations when the module price is lowest at this moment due to falling prices of all module materials in recent years.

Even many Indian module manufacturers are getting competitive these days in pricing the module on par with Tier 2 or 3 Chinese companies. This is a good sign. ii Present Indian module manufacturing nameplate capacity is about 5 GW whereas demand by Rooftop sector alone is 6.5 GW per year for next six years not considering utility sector demand! So, there is room for every Indian module

In my view, instead of 30 % subsidy to customers, which reminds me of 'carrot and stick', better this subsidy is passed on at 15% each to invertor (upto 100 KW) and battery manufacturers who in turn pass this to end customer while selling their invertor and battery with standard warranty. I do not suggest subsidy to module manufacturers as this will give room to trade their modules to utility sector. ii When the roof top power generation is part of national solar mission, why the nationalized banks are not part of it? When they can grant car loans, personal loans and housing loans with repayment period of 10 to 15 years, why they hesitate to fund rooftop installation with repayment period of at least 5 years? Why not each branch of nationalized bank throughout the country install on their roof 3 to 5 KW PV system to experience the benefit of solar power and understand better the viability of it. ii Many clients of bank have Fixed Deposit and banks can grant loan against it or handle 30% government subsidy as margin money by client and grant loan for balance amount. Such approach will speed up installation. It is timely that SBI signed agreement with World Bank for USD 625 Million for supporting grid connected rooftop which will benefit developers, integrators, end users mainly commercial, industrial and institutional sectors. The contributions from Miller Centre are noteworthy.

Centre is also planning to invest Rs.16,800 crore in next 4 years for rooftop solar. This is high time all nationalized banks participate and set themselves yearly target to fund rooftop installations to reach the 40 GW target by 2020.

The banks can hire solar experts in their region to evaluate the estimates and validate the installations to safeguard the interest of banks and customers. ii Job creation in each city, town

and villages and training for technicians. Participation by students at high school and colleges during installation of systems in their place to get awareness of solar power generation.

The SUN power is beyond politics and policies so the wiser is the one who makes hay while sun shines.

THREATS: ii 40 GW target of rooftop installation need 16 crore solar panels of 250 W each and this is very high volume which cannot be met by existing Indian module manufacturers and hence import of modules is imminent. Like India, many countries in the world are setting target in GW scale and demand for solar materials and finally modules is rising. This will lead to shortage of supply, interrupted deliveries and lead to price increase of modules over coming years. ii In parallel there will be shortage of wafers and cells – as many companies enter into long term contract with their clients and Indian cell and module manufacturers will face difficulty in getting wafers and cells to keep their plant running to full capacity and thus affecting our solar mission. ii As the roof top installation is showing growing trend, this leads to delivery of substandard modules and BOS by new installers who may disappear after a few years of installation. Thus maintenance and service will be affected. ii Even if the price of module is affordable, the price of BOS, installation and interest on loan is high which deters customer to go for solar but resort to use line power though it is intermittent. ii The big mistake our Government has done while launching solar mission is not creating the infrastructure for polysilicon and wafer but give priority for end product viz, modules and power plants . There should have been

second body other than MNRE, say National Solar Power Corporation (NSPC) on the lines of NTPC which promoted Thermal power. This Corporation should have prepared the master plan for polysilicon plant or wafer plant to make India self-reliant in sourcing wafers and cells locally for at least 50% of 100 GW target set. For 40 GW Rooftop project, assuming 4.23 Watt/cell, 9680 million wafers are required which translates to 210,000 Tons of cropped ingot and 288,000 Tons of Polysilicon.

This excludes the calculation of wafer and Poly for 60 GW to cover 100 GW solar mission target. It is not too late now to initiate action keeping in mind that nearly 300 million people are living without electricity and the rise in population by next decade will pose a challenge to provide electricity for all and ne targets has to be set beyond 2022.

SUMMARY: With the SWOT analysis it can be seen that opportunity is for all whether investors, manufacturers, bankers, installers or users and it is challenge too for each of them to reach the set target of 40 GW . Solar city, Solar universe, Sun Run , Centro solar are few successful installers of rooftop installations in USA who have set their own standards in appraising the customers with facts and figures, selection of modules and BOS, installation, training and maintenance. .Could you elaborate more on the key features of PV200 Solar PV Installation tester?

PV200 is a very simple and easy to use product. Most of the tests are conducted by pressing the auto button. The PV200 automatically perform several test; it will check the open circuit voltage of the system, the short circuit current and the polarity of all the wiring to ensure that none of the wiring is mismatched at the time of connection. It has a built in installation tester to perform installation tests up to 1000V. It also works with an android App that transfers the test results from the PV200 and shows them as full colour IV curves on a mobile device. These tests are run within 10 to 15 sec at the press of one button.

.Could you elaborate more on the IV curve and its importance to an installer?

An IV curve gives the user the visual representation of the performance of the PV panel or the string. All manufacturers publish their IV curve, which shows the user the performance level of their product compared to their competitors. All of these laboratory tests are always done at 1000 V and 25oC. But the actual conditions in the field are never these ‘ideal’ conditions.

The PV200 enables the user to perform these tests at actual conditions at the site and using mathematical calculations compare this data to manufacturer’s curve data. This helps the users

to actually see if the panels are performing to the laboratory conditions or following a linear cure similar to that at ideal conditions.

Here it is important for the users to realise that the data published by the manufacturers will never be fulfilled in the real working environment because of things like the difference in temperature and other factors like dust and clouds.

What the PV200 does is give the user the real representation of the returns that they are going to get from their panels rather than just take the calculations that come from the manufacturer.

.What differentiates the PV200 from other testing instruments available in the market?

Our aim from the onset was to try and develop a product that would be easy for all contractors to use.

What we didn’t want to do was to develop a complicated product that would require a lot of training and ongoing support to the client. What makes PV200 unique is that once a user understands how to set the product, which he can do by simply watching a video that is available on youtube, he can perform the test accurately, effectively and efficiently.

Ease of use, portability, and low cost sets PV200 apart from the other instruments available in the market.

Q

.Express your views on the solar market in India and its importance in Seaward’s future growth?

India is a very exciting market.

Being involved in solar for several years we have seen different growth rates in different markets and I think India is on the cusp of something very big. I think we’ve come to the Indian market at the right time, with the right product.

I think there are many lessons that the Indian market still has to learn, many quality standards that will eventually be adopted. It’s impor-

tant to educate markets that are in their infancy on the benefits and importance of tests. Renewable is the future energy source for the world and India has started to understand the importance of renewable energy, solar will play a big part in the future.

.How do you view the adoption of test instruments in the Indian markets? Are there any challenges and what are those?

The challenges are similar to those seen in other countries, we start very slow and as the growth picks up the curve becomes steeper. We have experienced this in Germany, which is one of our leading markets, USA and our home market of United Kingdom. We see India and China to be the next big markets with great opportunities and growth potentials.

As a company that is primarily a manufacturer of test equipment we see the value in working with our global partner companies to educate and support the end user in their respective markets, this approach has worked well in other markets and we definitely see growth potential in the next 12 to 18 months in India.

.Where do you see Seaward in India in the next 5 to 10 years?

In the next 5 to 10 years we see Seaward as an integral part of the Indian solar market, helping to train, develop, and support new users – ensuring market growth.

A number of recently announced government initiatives along with favourable policies have laid a strong foundation for solar rooftop market in India. A recently published TechSci Research report on Solar rooftop market in India estimates the sector to grow at a CAGR of over 60% during 2016 - 2021.The release of solar policies by various states in recent days promising an array of incentives such as accelerated depreciation, capital subsidies, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), net metering incentives, Assured Power Purchase Agreement, etc has made it an attractive sector for firms and individuals to invest.

Rooftop solar power is expected to touch 40 gigawatt (GW) by 2022. The idea that the spare space on your roof can be a source of income as well as fulfil your power needs is now a reality for many. Rooftop solar power developers are approaching individual home owners to let them install rooftop solar units for free. The Government is leading by example by installing solar roof tops widely on government buildings, airports, railways network, educational institutions, residential sector and all types of buildings

The agreement is usually for 25 years and the annual return is very lucrative. Usually, the developer recovers the entire cost in five years. If you don’t want to give your roof rights to a third party, you have the option to hire a project developer to install a plant at your own expense, saving on bills and selling the surplus.

Things to consider before installing a solar rooftop system Some factors should be considered before installing a solar power plant on the rooftop including electrical load, current rate, roof size, load capacity and geographic location of the building.

Rooftop PV installation can either be done for standalone use or to feed into the grid.

Costs Involved Solar panels accounts for the almost 70 per cent of the total project cost. Usually, the cost of a PV module costs anywhere between Rs 30 to Rs 50 per watt of power generated. The cost for inverter and batteries would be additional.

A good 5 kW system for a home would cost around Rs 3-4 lakhs to setup, which can provide elec-

tricity for 25 years. The additional operating cost will include the cost of replacing the batteries.

Maintenance A solar PV system is low on maintenance but it is good to clean the system of dust and bird droppings regularly to maintain its efficiency.

Make sure that the system is getting adequate sunlight and is not obstructed or shaded by nearby trees or buildings.

Rooftop Space Requirements The roof space requirement for installation of a PV system depends on the efficiency of the system. For example, to generate 2000 watts from a 12% efficient system, you need a 200 sq ft of roof area. It is essential to ensure that your system is energy efficient so that you do need a bigger sized solar system. The connected load of your setup will help you determine the size of system that you need and that in turn will drive the cost of the system. Although a solar PV system can generate electricity through direct or scattered sunlight but it is very important to assess the amount of sunlight available at the location where a solar PV system is being installed.

Roof condition and Load carrying capacity A normal solar PV usually weights 15kg per sq meter and the roof should be able to handle the load. Tilt at which the solar panel is installed is also an important consideration. The system should

be carefully designed to with-stand heavy winds.

Such systems are designed to connect the solar power system to a roof using weights, rather than fasteners that must be anchored to the roof. The roof should be in a good state prior to solar installation. If it needs significant repair or replacement, it should be done before installing the system.

Exposure Large roofs which receive direct sunlight without shadow from the surrounding structures are best suited for solar PV. If there is shadow on a part of the terrace during the day, PV solar panels are unable to yield power for that period of time. To add the generated power into the grid, one needs to sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with local distribution utilities. A tariff is determined by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC).

However, the issues related to grid integration, metering, measurement and energy accounting for projects is under consideration with the government.

However, if the selling and buying are at the same tariff-rate (usually the buying rate), then it is called net-metering. And herein lies a problem. Unfortunately, feed-intariff is just not possible in India because of the simple reason that the DISCOMs are in financial deficit- they have no money to pay the users. Lack of viable financial incentives is, thus, restricting end customer’s adoption of netmetering. For the net-metering to make financial sense, the government will have to introduce innovative financial incentives to make choosing solar through netmetering easier for consumers.

Conclusion: The rooftop sector has to date been overshadowed by India’s booming utility-scale segment. Overall, rooftop PV stands at around 10-12% of India’s total solar capacity, which is a far smaller percentage than in other major PV markets such as the US (46%), Germany (73%), China (18%) and Australia (97%). MNRE’s plan for rooftop solar on government buildings is helping the rooftop segment, although it is still largely driven by private sector demand.

Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has already announced a scheme for allocating 1GW of rooftop solar capacity on various government buildings. Meanwhile, several government departments have recently committed to installing 1.5GW of rooftop solar capacity. Net metering is also reported to be becoming more effective across the country. The commercial and industrial segment, the main drivers of rooftop solar in India, will also see large capacity additions by the end of September with investors looking to claim 80% accelerated depreciation (AD).

The Indian state of Odisha recently said it is targeting 70MW of rooftop solar by 2022 and has already received multiple residential applications.

Meanwhile, the State Bank of India (SBI) has signed agreements with the World Bank for a US$625 million facility specifically to support India’s grid-connected rooftop solar programme.

The high growth phase of India’s rooftop solar market has only just begun. This market has got a great potential and it is very encouraging to see the government addressing some of the key challenges. .To begin, tell us more about the JV between Ganges Internationale and Sunlink Corporation and the strategic thinking behind forming this JV? Compared to a fixed mounted PV system, the use of tracking technology can give an incremental power output of 15%- 25%, depending upon the location, with an increase in investment of only 8% to 10%. Compared to the incremental cost the return on investment (ROI) for a tracking technology is obvious. The developed economies around the globe entering into large scale ground

We sensed a huge opportunity for tracking technology in India and decided to tie up with a sound technical partner having a good experience and strong operational back ground who has done several On-ground testing of their products. .With this JV what are the opportunities and growth that you are looking at?

We see the markets will be shifting to tracking technology soon in the coming years and with an excellent world class tested product from Sunlink, we would see a major hold in the market. We will be in a position to roll out huge volumes in a shorter period of time. With this we would be able to capture much higher market share. As of now, we already have a 20% to 25% market share in India, which in itself is a very decent volume.

But, going ahead we will definitely be focussing more on increasing the market share.

.What according to you are the challenges for the larger adoption of tracking technology in India?

Basically the education of the lenders, project developers and the users like the state electricity board is very important for the offtake of the tracking technology in India. When we had talked to the developers here in India, we were shocked to know that

most of them don’t know that in US 75% to 80% of ground mount is all tracking. Take a classic example, in US many states do not allow fixed mounted systems to be installed. In fixed mounted system, with variation in power output in the morning, afternoon and evening, the grid stability is in question. Whereas in a tracking system where the peak production starts in the morning at 10 am and lasts till 4 pm the fall in power production thereafter is very gradual . These data of efficiency and comfort zones are not available to the lenders and end users here in India. Hence, the basic difference here is that there is a big gap in the knowledge base. We in India are used to ground mount systems and are feeling very comfortable with it.

In order for larger adoption of tracking technology it is very important to bring out the data, highlight the problems and advantages of the tracking solution. In parallel, Ganges along with Sunlink having global experiences with a long history are helping several customers to make them understand the product and its potential and which in turn will help others and their customers/ end players to take an informed decision

.Kindly elaborate on the factors that need to be taken into consideration while selecting a tracking system?

Stability of the structure has to be validated and preferred if you have wind tunnel test data on the structures. A fixed tilt system statistic analysis might provide you a lot of accurate data as there are no moving parts involved in it but a tracking system statistic analysis might not give you the ultimate data bank. Wind tunnel testing gives you a lot of information that is not available through normal software.

It’s important to look at the controllers, whether the customer will get any support for the controller for the next 25 years. If the company providing the same does not provide any support then how do they manage or rectify the controllers, if the customer finds any issues in the future. Also one needs to look at the drives, how many cycles can the drive work for? What is the technology? It’s important to look at how easy repair and maintenance of a particular product would be. So, these are some of the factors that need to be taken into consideration while selecting a tracking system.

.To begin with, tell our readers more about Sungrow and its roadmap for launch of new products in India?

Sungrow started its operation in 1997 and since then we have been focusing on innovation in technology. This focus has kept Sungrow’s product line-up as the preeminent choice in the solar industry. As the worldwide market leader, Sungrow currently has market shares of over 30% in China and over 20% in Germany.

.Sungrow has recently launched the world’s first 1500V string inverter, how do you see the market dynamics changing with this launch?

The solar industry has long been demanding a 1500V string inverter and this newly launched product from Sungrow is expected to dramatically reduce system cost and improve power generation efficiency. But, the take off of the 1500V inverters in the market will depend on the difference in the PV module cost of 1000V modules and 1500V modules. If the difference is small we will see quick deployment of 1500V string inverter. But, if the cost difference is large that it will take time for the adoption of the 1500V inverters in the market.

As far as our product is concerned, the SG80HV has a power output of 80KW rated at 1500VDC. With a 2.5MW PV power block design, DC side cabling costs can be reduced by 30%. At a 1500VDC rating, the SG80HV is also able to reduce balance of system costs in addition to the high power generation yield it offers.

Q

.In addition to inverters Sungrow also offers storage solutions, could you elaborate more on the storage solutions that you offer? Is there any project that you have used energy storage solution in India?

total storage solutions. The storage solutions offered by Sungrow can be divided into three different types- Gird support storage solution, Micro-Grid storage solutions and Residential storage solutions.

The Grid support storage solutions are maintenance free, flexible and have a very fast response time in milliseconds. This system support various grid connected standards including TUV, CSA, CE and BDEW. We have also formed a JV with Samsung in order to be able to provide complete Energy Storage System Solutions incorporating lithium batteries, Power Conversion Systems (PCS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS). We have finished many projects in China for storage systems and similarly we see there are various applications that need energy storage solutions in India. First is grid stability and second is for better integration of renewable energy into the grid.

We have just finished a 1MW project using our energy storage solutions in India recently.

Q

.How different is the Indian market from the other markets that Sungrow operates?

How important is the Indian market for Sungrow’s future growth?

The Indian market is very similar with the Chinese market. The requirement of the products and solutions for both the markets is very similar. Most of the products launched in India is developed on

the similar platform in China. The similarity is such that we can even copy our newly launched 1500V string inverters to the Indian market without any changes.

This year we want the deployment in India to reach 1GW and will be looking to double it in the next years. We want to supply excellent products in the Indian market and the customers in Indian are very happy and satisfied with our products. In the future we want to introduce many new products to our customers and get more success in India. Our strategy here would be Customer’s Success is Our Success.

Q

.What is the trend that you see in the solar inverters in the next 5 to 10 years?

As the market gradually transits to higher voltage system we will see gradual decrease in the traditional 1000V inverters. We expect to see 15 to 20% deployment of 1500V inverters by the next year and in the coming 3 to 5 years we will see most of the systems using 1500V inverters. But, for the roof top the transition might not be that easy because of the concerns of the safety of the different components used in a rooftop system.

.Where do you see Sungrow in India in the next 3 to 5 years?

Sungrow has an Indian subsidiary which takes care of the Indian operation with a main office in Bangalore and contact centres in New Delhi and Chennai. In addition, Sungrow has also deployed its service team at different locations in India.

With clarity on the PV policy and the support from the current government the PV industry in India is growing step by step and for Sungrow we are confident to follow these steps and are confident to get very big success in the Indian market ■

INTERSOLAR INDIA 2016 EXTENSIVE ACCOMPANYING PROGRAM FOR A GROWING MARKET

ndia has one of the fastest growing solar markets in the world. According to the Mercom Capital Group, a total of 8.1 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity had been installed in the country by August 2016, and 21 additional GW are already in the pipeline. These figures present the ideal backdrop against which to hold Intersolar India.

From October 19–21, around 230 exhibitors – 15% more than last year – are showcasing their products and services to visitors at India’s largest exhibition and conference for the solar industry.

I

nternet of Things (IoT) has led to the evolution of “Smartness” in everything from the grid to the city. The number of advances in M2M/ IoT technology has initiated energy-efficient innovations, which are driven by Big Data analytics and M2M/ IoT Application Platforms. The energy-saving IoT played by smart meters has been widely used across the globe. IoT based M2M solutions enable interaction, interoperability and resource sharing between different domains. Currently smart metering and energy management are isolated from each other.

They address different needs and employ different technologies, which mean that creating comprehensive, integrated solutions is a huge challenge. Privatization and newer regulations have unlocked the market with serious competition that has come into play, providing businesses and consumers with an increased number of choices to meet their energy needs. According to Gartner the IoT usage in the energy sector is expected to grow to 50 billion devices by 2020, and manufacturers, utility providers, and consumers are taking advantage of information that flows from multiple assets.

India is slated to see the market for smart grid touch Rs 50,000 crore in the next four to five years, from the present level of sub Rs 100 crore. This would be fuelled by the government's plan of setting up 100 smart cities and 500 smart towns. The work would involve strengthening the electrical network, moving over head distribution lines to underground cables at strategic locations in the city, automating substations and distri-

bution network, smart metering, rooftop solar integration, automated demand response systems to control certain loads to match demand with supply, a state of the art billing and collection systems, integrated customer care centers, energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging stations, smart street lights and mobile work force management systems.

According to a report by Deloitte, energy and utility are estimated to drive future market growth of M2M/ IoT. This is a result of the Government of India’s serious initiatives to deploy smart energy meters. Energy and utilities application markets are growing and are expected to grow at a CAGR of 38.12% for the period 2011-2016.

Smart grid technologies that are able to track consumer usage and connect to smart meters will greatly improve energy efficiency by adjusting power distribution.

Smart grids will reduce power loss while smart readers will automatically inform operators when maintenance is needed before a real issue develops. This is a very key component when building Smart Cities. There cannot be a Smart City without Smart Grid Technologies.

Focusing on energy grids and Smart Grids, IoT technology addresses some of the key issues like grid security, failure in distribution network, line losses, and overloading. As the energy resources deplete day by day, the worldwide focus has shifted towards achieving energy conservation and green energy by deploying IoT solutions.

IoT applications have enabled power utilities to control assets

from anywhere, and at any time.

For the renewable energy sector IoT technology brings sophisticated solutions for some of the key issues facing the renewable energy installations, plant monitoring, fault management, and performance monitoring.

Rising security concerns against cyber-attacks and demand for increased operational efficiency is expected to drive the IoT energy market in the coming years. As a result, solution providers are shifting focus towards IoT security solutions to safeguard the connected devices. IoT based solutions are further enabling companies to increase operational efficiency.

Advancement in next generation sensors is another major driving factor for implementing IoT in the energy market. However, lack of skilled workers and increasing concern about data security and privacy acts as a restraining growth factor for the market.

Mobile technology applications have saturated the modern lifestyle and similar programs will be found in the energy sector soon.

Smart apps are already being offered that allow users to control their utilities from their phone or tablet. Homes that learn and respond to personal energy usage patterns aren’t far from becoming a reality; the age of manually flipping a light switch may soon be over. Like you exit one room and turn into another and automatically lights go off, all this technology is on an automated smart system. The sensors that are able to track ones movements will improve utility usage by turning off appliances and utilities as soon as they are no longer needed and again activating them as and  www.supersmartenergy.com

Smart meters monitor energy consumption at regular intervals and transmit information to the utility companies. The first key consumer benefit is the provision of accurate, up-to date billing information, which allows the utilities to introduce more flexible payment methods. Smart meters also eliminate the need for periodic trips to each physical location to read a meter.

The introduction of an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) enables two-way communication between the consumers and the utilities. This allows additional services like remote connect / disconnection of energy that subscribers can employ in case of non-payment of their bill.

The addition of in-home displays (IHDs) allows consumers to monitor and better control

their usage of electricity. However, these displays represent an extra cost that consumers are reluctant to pay; therefore mass adoption would require a subsidy from the utility companies or the government.

The use of standard-based, home area networking (HAN) communication technologies such as ZigBee, M-Bus and Broadband PLC, as well as Smart Plugs, allows smart meters to function as “home connected meters”. This is a relatively new term, one that indicates the emerging role of meters as the communication hub in HANs. HAN supports home automation connectivity with appliances, lighting, security systems and health monitoring devices. When those communications hubs are in place in millions of homes we can expect standards to emerge, device and sensor prices to fall, and kits to be marketed that enable every-

thing to be connected into a home network.

We can safely assume that in future a communications hub will be present in every household.

These hubs will provide wide HAN connectivity outside the home and as well as inside. Different technologies are being developed and deployed in order to create next-generation hubs and there is no obvious “winner”. The most likely result is that different technologies will be employed, which is already the case today in the smart energy sector ■

ii Hitachi Hi-Rel offered Grid Connected Solar Inverters with an available range between 250 kW to 1.25 MW, having 1.2 GW installed base in India ii Waaree Energies Ltd, a solar photovoltaic module manufacturer launched the new 1500V System Voltage crystalline solar module. The module comes packed with a whole lot of inherent advantages which are absent in 1000 V modules. Certain key ones include the lowering of balance of system costs as high voltage systems allow larger number of modules to be connected in a single string, reducing the number of combiner boxes, shorter runs of wiring, trenching, labour and DC breakers, all of which create reduced efficacy in the system. ii Renesola launched their high frequency modules, based on PRC technology, and double glassbased modules that are expected to be available in the market from 2017 ii SOLARGISE displayed and demonstrated their latest technology with new modules for the first time in public.
