Introduction To all Yacht Captains and Crew... an introduction to our Guides

A

We often ask fellow Captains & crew to find out who they used... who they recommend? We might ask around other yachts in the marina / anchorage for their insight as to who to use for which service... ‘did they actually do what they said they would?’ There are plenty of online forums also…

ll of us will remember our early days at sea... discovering new places... heading out on that first ocean passage as a Captain - with full responsibility for the vessel, her systems and her crew. Before we make ‘landfall’ in any new port, one would always have the same two things to consider... a job list and a time schedule. The development of the internet and ‘google searches’ means there is a plethora of online services available, we are often inundated for choice! Yet who is reputable and good – who offers the better service – who do we TRUST?

As time evolves our own database of reliable service contacts increases, that we have built up over the years in different ports visited world wide. For each good contact we’ve kept, we’ve probably thrown out two or three other ‘contenders’ in the same business... making the ones we do keep extremely useful personal service contacts that we know we can count on!

6

SERVICES

GUIDE

These quality contacts then represent part of our ability to perform our own professional role on a yacht. We all know where the ‘buck stops’ as Captain on a charter or owner’s cruise, when the outboard motor on the tender fails... when the generator goes down... or when the guest’s specially requested provisions don’t arrive in time for the start of the cruise.

EASTERN

MEDITERRANEAN

These comments really do get listened to and ‘actioned’ accordingly by us... for in just the same way that we have followed up / researched all your new recommendations from 2018, we have also dropped services from last year, after receiving consistently poor feedback for them. Recommended Services…. As a ‘Captain’s Recommended Service’ they receive a free basic listing in the printed Guide and online, and are offered the opportunity to advertise and promote their service further. It is important to understand the concept behind the advertising; for without it, there simply would be no book! As this is a relatively small specialist niche market, book sales alone could never support the cost of researching and publishing such a Guide. The advertising itself however, is ONLY made available to services recommended to us.

This need for a ‘database’ of reliable service contacts is something that stays with us throughout our career afloat. As boats / owners change, there are ‘pastures new’ for all of us regardless of our depth of experience... new destinations... new cruising grounds... and new ports... each bringing their own new challenge. The very ‘raison d’être’ for the Superyacht Services Guides... was to collate an ‘Inside Guide’ of Captain’s own ‘recommended services’, for each Captain and Senior Crew to be able to access, in order to share the benefits of each other’s collective experience.

This book is simply ‘your inside Guide’... updated annually to ensure we keep up to date. Over the past 17 years our regional Guides and comprehensive online database have really proved themselves as incredibly useful points of reference. Our Guides are most often found on the Bridge or chart table, or in the crew mess, full of ‘stickies’ marking certain pages and services!

Every year, we interview and receive services feedback (usually good, though negative on occasions also!) and recommendations from Captains and senior crew throughout the year.

Our website, www.superyachtservices.com lists over 10,000 Captains Recommended Services worldwide and is a unique database for crew to search for services, or peruse a region/country... seeing what services are available in each destination.

You may meet some of the Superyacht Services Guide team researching or distributing Guides at Boat Shows and Regattas worldwide; our Guides can be found in most marinas, chandleries and are available online through Stanfords in London and Bluewater Books in Fort Lauderdale.

The 2019/20 Eastern MED Booklet covers Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. Each country destination has a useful summary page, a map and Category Index specific to that location. There is room to develop these Eastern MED chapters further, so we look forward to receiving your Recommendations over the year ahead!

We also have all our Guides on USB sticks, and as digital Flip Books on www.issuu.com/superyachtservicesguide.

The 2019/20 MED Guide covers a vast region, from the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, the Atlantic Islands of the Azores and Canaries, into the MED at Gibraltar – then east to include Mediterranean Spain and France, Italy and Malta…

If you can spare the time, please leave service reviews online, it really means a lot to each service, and keep us updated with NEW RECOMMENDATIONS! Finally, fair winds & safe sailing / passage making to you all.

Each country destination has a useful summary page and a map, chapters are then location based, with an introduction and category index of that specific area.

Andrew & Caroline Blatter Publishers, Superyacht Publications Email: caroline@superyachtpublications.com Website: www.superyachtservicesguide.com

Whilst the main Superyacht ‘base’ ports have more extensive listings of services available, the lesser frequented places generally have at least one ‘Yacht Services’ contact, who can be your main ‘port of call’ for anything and everything you might need! We have useful ‘Superyacht Events Calendar,’ for the year ahead which you will find on pages 14 & 15.

Authors Profiles To get in touch with us, please contact us by email: info@superyachtpublications.com or through www.superyachtservicesguide.com With their collective professional experience in the marine industry, and their knowledge of this region, Suzi, Adelina and Caroline are able to create an authoritative insight into the best Superyacht Services available in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Adelina Matias Aloglu Adelina has spent over 30 years working in all aspects of the yachting industry. Portuguese by birth, an avid traveller, sailor and linguist, Adelina took her first crewing job on a yacht based in the Eastern Med, sailing the Adriatic, parts of the Atlantic Coast & throughout the Med. She eventually became one of the pioneers of the yachting industry in Turkey; together with her husband they founded the first boatyard in Gรถcek, nowadays a Superyacht hub and one of the most affluent destinations in the East Med. Her working experience covers a wide spectrum of the yachting industry from boat-building and marina management to superyacht stewardess, charter operations and brokerage. Besides representing the Superyacht Services Guide in the Eastern Med & Middle East, she also contributes to our Asia & Indian Ocean team promoting the development of Superyacht Services in these regions.

Suzi M. Jameson Suzi Jameson was born in Ontario, Canada, where she learned to love watersports - from canoes to windsurfers, lasers to waterski boats and then on to larger sailboats. Her early passion for music lead her to France, where she met her husband - an experienced sailor - with whom she has now sailed extensively throughout the West Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. As a jazz pianist and singer, Suzi has done private events on many Superyachts with her jazz trio, as well performing on the 189m five masted Club Med II. Suzi is based in the South of France with her family, is bi-lingual, and really enjoys researching for the Superyacht Services Guides, which combines her love of the sea and travelling.

She also qualified to teach children with learning difficulties, and worked in Mallorca for several years at the international schools whilst based there. With a love for the sea and boats, she has sailed over 30,000 miles with Andrew, in the Med and Caribbean, chartering, managing a prominent new build, and living on their own boat with their growing young family for 6 years! Homes have been in Mallorca, Antigua and for now England. Having set Superyacht Publications up with Andrew in 2002, Caroline as Director now manages all aspects of the business, researching/writing & editing for all the Guides. She continues to love the outdoors/sport & travel when time permits, charitable causes close to her heart, as well as sharing family life with four children and Andrew!

Publishers Note: A heartfelt THANK YOU to our team at SSG – to Adelina in Turkey, Suzi based in France and our Admin team in Antigua and England. None of this could happen without Simon Udal, our designer ‘extraordinaire’, turning simple (long!) text documents into photo filled colourful chapters with maps and Service Ads. His attention to detail, commitment and patience is so appreciated. Finally, to our children - Tristan, Jessica, Miles and Emily, who stand by and with me on this journey that dear Andrew started. Thank you. Caroline x

Croatia

W

ith more yachts travelling to the Adriatic Coast for the amazing cruising and good value services available, we are keen to expand the chapters on Croatia & Montenegro, to share the numerous recommendations we receive. Lying on the Balkan Peninsula, with a 6,278 km coastline onto the Adriatic Sea, including 1244 islands, islets and reefs, Croatia shares land borders with Slovenia to the north, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and to the far south with Montenegro. Although a member of the European Union (since 2013), the national currency is still the Kuna. Croatia’s history is more convoluted than most – a degree of stability has now returned, with Kolinda Grabar – Kitarovic serving as a the 4th and first female president since 2015. The inland Medieval capital city is Zagreb, known for its museums, thousand year old Gornjigrad (Upper town) and the café lined streets – where locals enjoy watching the world go by! Croatia’s second largest city is Split, with a population of just over 200,000, has excellent travel connections, historical Roman sites – fine dining, fun nightlife and good beaches. Known as the ‘pearl of the Adriatic’, the coastal town of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a stunning old town with massive stone walls dating back to the 16th century. Traditional red coloured roofs cling to the coast – restaurants and cafes lining the streets. Great anchorages, the natural beauty of the land and cultural heritage qualifies the Adriatic undisputedly as one of the world’s best cruising destinations. With rapidly improving infrastructure for Superyachts and a strong will to respond to demands, independent marinas are offering berths and five star facilities for VIP guests. The marinas are evenly spread out along the Croatian coast, sometimes only a few hours sailing away from each other. Many marinas are situated close to historic towns, which are true treasures of Croatia’s history and cultural heritage. Croatia has a varied continental climate in the north and east, and a Mediterranean climate along the coast. As the Adriatic is an almost fully enclosed sea, sea waves rarely reach extreme heights or lengths – so with fair breezes and relatively flat waters, sailing can be spectacular! Captains and crew, owners and guests can expect to find a courteous and welcoming Croatia that is determined to live up to its bountiful heritage. Refreshingly, Croatians are not dazzled by celebrities and wealth. Crime is low, the quality of life is good, and the cost of living is cheaper than in Western Europe. Language isn’t a problem either as English, German and Italian are widely spoken, especially along the coast and in the marine industry.

Kornati National Park

SHORESIDE ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

The Kornati National Park is a dramatic group of about 130 islands, islets and reefs sprinkled in the deep blue sea of the Adriatic, covering an area of about 64 sq km. The Kornati archipelago is in Dalmatia, a coastal region of Croatia just across from the cities of Zadar and Sibenik. Permits are needed to anchor and enter this National Park; collection of entry fees is done by NP tenders who will come to your yacht so you do not need to organize permits beforehand anymore.

EVENTS

MYS Yachting MYS Yachting have a very useful continually updated page for upcoming events, year round. Website: https://mysyachting.com/events/

The largest island is Kornat, from which the archipelago takes its name. Other larger islands are, Piskara, Kurba Vela, Zut, Sit, Vrgada and Levrnaka. Apart from a tiny area of cultivated land with fig trees, olives and vineyards, the Kornati islands are rocky, covered with thin grass, rare trees and Mediterranean scrubs.

Krka Waterfalls & Sibenik Sibenik lies 32nm North of Split, and is the jumping off point for a trip up the river in your tender to the Krka National Park and the magnificent Krka Waterfalls. The Krka River travels two thirds of its way to the sea through canyons; and the trip up the river is well worth the effort as you pass through gorges and salt lakes.

The Kornati National Park has no permanent inhabitants, although the present owners from nearby larger Dalmatian islands periodically visit Kornati to tend their vineyards and olive groves, bringing their sheep to graze.

Once at the entrance to the National Park at Skradin, you must take a ferry – which is included in the entrance fee – and then a walk to the bottom of the falls.

The sea around the islands is rich with fish and a variety of marine life. The islands have no spring water, only rainwater collected in water holes.

There are seven falls, the last one being Skradinski, with an average flow of 55 cubic metres of water per second.

The unique feature of the islands lies in their rugged shores with many caves and coves. The landscape of chalk limestone is covered with bushes of rosemary, juniper, lavender, thyme, myrtle and sage. Follow the pathways leading to steep and huge cliffs facing the open sea and others gently declining towards the sea, ending in a small bay with a jetty and one or two fishermen's cottages surrounded by pine, olives and fig trees.

The National Park Krka is rich in flora and fauna… and 222 bird species live there, making it one of the most valuable ornithological areas in Europe. Take the time to climb up the falls – not many people do - and it becomes more tranquil as you climb away from the hubbub of the tourists bathing in the pools at the base of the falls. Sibenik itself is several degrees cooler than Split and the surrounding areas in the hot summer months, and is very unspoilt by mass tourism. It is well worth taking guests to.

Montenegro

M

ontenegro, part of the Balkan Peninsula and on the Adriatic Coast, is a small yet extremely beautiful and safe country, with land borders to Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. The inland city of Podgorica is Montenegro’s capital, built amongst five rivers, yet most of the city was destroyed in WWII so it is relatively new and modern with green spaces and parks. The international airport is 9kms away and the biggest lake in Balkans, Skadar Lake, within the municipality. This gem of the Adriatic has beautiful glistening waters along its coastline, with rugged peaks in the mountainous north (including a fantastic Winter Ski centre in Zabjlac providing ample activity for crew wintering here!), the well known orange hued roof tops of old towns and fishing villages nestled along the coast make up its fascinating history and impressive architecture. The superb Bay of Kotor, in the north near the border with Croatia, with its 30kms of protected water is the only fjord in the Mediterranean and one of the main attractions for yachts visiting Montenegro. During the time of the Roman Empire, the Bay of Kotor was used as a strategically important base for naval forces. The Bay also formed a concessional border between Christianity and Islam for centuries. Nowadays it is valued for its natural beauty and its historical and cultural sites. Within the Bay, the towns of Perast and Kotor as well as the tiny islands of ‘Our Lady of Rocks’ and ‘St.George’ are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Further south along this Adriatic coast, Budva (founded more than 2,500 years ago) is buzzing in the Mediterranean summer with cafes and piazzas along its winding alleyways and restored Medieval streets. The Five Star Hotel & Resort of the medieval fishing village on Sveti Stefan Islet is an exclusive Aman Resort – a protected luxurious UNESCO site. Broad lowland with many sandy beaches and lagoons then stretch south to Shkodra in Albania. Near Vlora the Adriatic coast ends and merges into the Ionian Sea. The climate of the Adriatic coastal regions is characterized by very warm, dry summers and mild, damp winters. Montenegro is an ideal destination for non-EU registered boats wishing to be close to Europe but outside European tax and import regulations. Montenegro also has user-friendly, simplified charter rules allowing charter yachts to make multiple entries and changes to passenger and crew manifests. A good cruise combination is combining Montenegro with Croatia & Venice. For more information contact our Captains Recommended Yacht Services agents.

Greece

T

he magnificent yachting destination of Greece lies in southeastern Europe, on the southern-most tip of the Balkans peninsula sharing land borders with Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey to the east. Its coastline features thousands of islands (approx. 1400!) throughout the Aegian Sea - lying to the east of mainland Greece, the Ionian Sea to the west and the Mediterranean to the south. Although we think of Greece with its shimmering coastline and beautiful beaches, The Pindus Mountain range forms the backbone of mainland Greece, with Mount Olympus as its highest peak at 2,917m. The culture and civilization of ancient Greece, generally considered the cradle of Western civilization, has had a significant influence on the world as we know it. This Eastern Med lifestyle combines ancient treasures and history, home of the Gods of old and the historic city of Athens, with the breathtaking beauty of the Greek Islands and the luxuries of modern Europe. This legacy is partly reflected in the seventeen UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in Greece. The bustling cosmopolitan metropolis of Athens has the majesty of the Panthenon on the Acropolis – built in the 5th Century BC and dedicated to the Greek Goddess Athena. Athens offers various choices of Superyacht marinas and some very good service companies for any repairs, before yachts head off cruising. Turquoise waters, coves and sandy beaches, whitewashed hillside villages and winding alleyways, first class restaurants and luxury hideaways, stunning scenery, simple beach side tavernas, popular night spots and a plethora of watersports make island cruising so varied and one of the world’s true yachting paradises – a haven for yachts on charter. The Greek Islands are traditionally grouped into six clusters: The Ionian Islands off the North West coast of mainland Greece have the popular holiday islands of Corfu, Kefalonia & Zante – characterized by more lush greenery. The Saronic Islands of Aegina & Poros lie in the Gulf of Athens. The Cyclades to the East are a larger group of islands including Mykonos & Santorini, more typical Greek islands of whitewashed cubed houses with winding alleyways. The North Aegean Islands lie above the Dodecanese - which follow the Turkish coast, to include the well known islands of Rhodes and Kos – often hottest over the summer months! The smaller group making up the Sporades off the east coast of Greece include Skiathos & Skopelos. Greece enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate; with hot dry days and blue clear skies, average sea temperature is 27˚C in July! Days start early before it gets too hot, afternoons taken up by siestas as in other Mediterranean countries with Greeks often returning to work between 5-8 pm. The infamous Meltemi Winds can blow particularly throughout August, bringing strong NE winds in the early afternoon – which often die out by sunset though occasionally last through the night. Secure protected anchorages are therefore a must for yachts incase the Meltemi builds. Over recent years, Greece has endured troubled times through economic hardship, and refugee/ migrant crisis. However, with the economy stabilizing, many owners are showing their support of Greece by visiting these idyllic islands; the people are wonderfully friendly and very welcoming.

Turkey

T

urkey is a wonderful, diverse and huge country with many thousands of miles of beautiful coastline. It borders four seas – the Mediterranean to the south, Aegean to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Sea of Marmara - and is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Iran, and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. Seljuk Turks began migrating into Anatolia or Asia Minor, now called Turkey, in the 11th century. From the late 13th century, the Ottoman Turks created an empire encompassing much of south eastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. The Ottoman Empire collapsed following its defeat in World War I, when parts of it were occupied by the Allies. A cadre of young military officers, led by Gen. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, organised a successful resistance to the Allies, and in 1923 they established the modern Republic of Turkey. Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic with a diverse cultural heritage and has become increasingly integrated with the West through membership in organisations such as the Council of Europe, NATO, OECD, OSCE and the G-20 major economies. Turkey has also fostered close cultural, political and economic relations with the Middle East, Caucasus, the Turkic states of Central Asia and the African countries.

The Turkish people are extremely generous, very hard working and skilled people. Although traditionally not a nation of sailors, in the last 3 decades they adopted the yachting sector and quickly became the East Med leaders in the yachting charter and building industries. In fact, a huge number of Superyachts are delivered by the many shipyards clustered near Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara, and also in Bodrum, Marmaris and Antalya.

Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology

Trekking in Turkey The Lycian way

Bodrum, Mugla

With its many national parks and high mountains, Turkey has some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world (some more arduous than others). Along the Mediterranean coast the most popular is the Lycian Trail which stretches around 509 km from Fethiye to Antalya with amazing views all around and great stops along the way such as Patara Beach, the natural beaches of Ka, and the historic ruins of Olympos.

Set inside Bodrum Castle of St. Peter, along the sea, the Underwater Archaeology Museum makes you feel as though you are travelling back in time to live Mediterranean history. It exhibits an immense collection of amphoras, ancient glass, bronze, clay, and iron items. It is the biggest museum of its kind devoted to underwater archaeology. Most of its collection dates from underwater excavations carried out by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. This is an extremely interesting museum, with fascinating exhibits and reconstructions of two ancient shipwrecks: the “Fatimi” ship, sunk in 1077 AD, and the large “Uluburun Shipwreck” from the 14th century BC.

Lake Bafa National Park Milas, Mugla The Bafa Lake, or Latmus as it was named in antiquity, used to be a gulf of the Aegean Sea until the Classical period. The region’s history dates back to 700 BC and it was conquered by Alexander the Great. It had a prominent place during the expansion of Christianity and the ruins of monasteries and caves painted by hermits can still be seen. It is a popular trekking destination because of its unusual geological rock formations and stunning lake views.

Website: www.bodrum-museum.com

Castle of St. Peter Bodrum, Mugla Built in 15th century during the Crusades by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John, this castle is a remarkable journey through the past and certainly worth taking the time to visit. Converted into a museum in 1962, from the gardens and walls there are spectacular views of Bodrum harbour, which only adds to the attraction. A must visit for history buffs.

SPAS Spas and Thermal baths – Turkey Due Turkey’s geological position and volcanic nature, there are numerous Spas & Thermal Springs along the Aegean coast and other regions in the country. The quality of services and facilities vary a lot, from natural open air thermal springs to luxurious Spa hotels.

Institute of Nautical Archaeology INA Bodrum Research Center Bodrum, Mugla

A favourite among Captains is “Sultaniye” thermal baths next to Köycegiz lake, close to Dalaman airport, the Caunus Rock tombs and the ruins of Caunus city.

This museum houses a large collection of artefacts that have been retrieved from the bottom of the sea, where they had sunk hundreds, or thousands of years ago, and the spectacular views over Bodrum bay are an additional treat.

Cyprus

T

he Republic of Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean Island, and part of the European Union, though the northern part of the island is under Turkish control.

Gaining independence from the UK in 1960, Cyprus has embraced the cultures of both East and West for thousands of years, and is the gateway in and out of the MED for yachts - with close proximity to both Turkey and Greece, The Middle East, and Port Said in Egypt for yachts transiting through Suez to SE Asia. A European member since 2004, the Euro is the local currency. A low cost of living is complemented by one of the most beneficial tax regimes in Europe and a British-based legal system. Cyprus is one of the safest countries in the EU; friendly and personable, the majority of Cypriots are fluent in English. Picturesque bays and coastal resorts, stunning mountain landscapes and pretty villages up in the Troodos Mountains, which are snow covered in the winter; Mount Olympus at 1952m the highest peak with four ski slopes – a stress free- safe lifestyle and minimum pollution make Cyprus a very desirable destination, whether on charter with guests, or as a base between trips, or for a mild Winter. Limassol Marina now opens Cyprus up to larger yachts – with good fresh local provisioning, chandleries and technical services to support.
