CLIENT MAGAZINE ISSUE 6

Editor’s Letter This is my favourite issue to date. It’s full of gusto, where classics sit comfotably next to a bit of punk and rock’n’roll. Obvious youth stories with Brit boys like Callum Wilson and Igor Stepanov run well with Chad White in Andrew Weir and Michael Fisher’s retro-punk fusion at Saint Mark’s Place. Alexander Beck in ‘The Spy of Bodega Bay’ has just the right amount of cinematic undertones for me whilst Fisherman’s Blue’s is classic Client. Our coverboy Jed Texas from Elite gives us a dark fashion spread which is a complete contrast to Joseph Sinclair’s nostalgic portraits, titled ‘Brotherhood’. I am also pleased to share with our readers, interviews with designers Lou Dalton and Oliver Spencer as well as Italian photographer Ivan Cazzola - a persoanl favourite of mine. Finally we inject some vivid colour with collaborations from Joe Lally/Seth Howard and Jeremy Williams/Ryan Davis. It’s great to see Fernando Cabral projecting his energy into the issue. Client is constantly maturing and we aim to keep it a little ‘unconventional’ because it‘s nice to do things a litte different sometimes. I am looking forward to returing to shooting for future issues of Client, and i hope you enjoy this issue as much as us. Questions by Marie-Claude Lamb

How old were you when you first picked up a camera, realising that it would change your path in life/career? The first time i used a camera, i was 7-8 years old. It was my father’s camera, he was in love with photography and video and had a super8 camera. I started shooting my parents whilst on holiday and soon realised that this could be my job. I remember an old photo i did of my mother, she was sitting on a bamboo chair, very used in 80’s, and she was wearing a spotted bikini and a straw hat. When you shot on film for the first time and got your processed images back, can you remember the feeling you got looking at them? Every shot reminds me of a feeling, a memory and this is this job’s joy. A lot of passed jobs i didn’t look for a while as soon as i see them all they reminds me about those incredibile feelings. You've photographed some interesting people over the years, from gangsters, gypsies, transsexuals and prostitutes for your work; have you ever felt a situation was becoming risky and do you have any good anecdotes from those experiences?

Once in Paris i was followed by a guy believing to be a police man and screaming to me that i wasn’t allowed to shoot in street. Another time i was in NY and some guys were running after me to steal my camera but i had my dog with me that started barking and so they ran away. Sometimes things like this happen, you have to be able to be safe and be prepared to get away.

so this makes me curious to do more.

Do you daydream?

Tell us your two favourite Cities in the world?

I am always daydreaming - i think about new projects, new solutions and i need to do it. You photographed Juliette Lewis, who's a bit of a hero of mine. What was she like to work with? Juliette is really funny, very easy like all Americano artists. She is more rock than diva… Who has been your favorite musician to shoot? Crystal Castles. Would you be interested in directing a music video? And if so who would be your dream artist to direct for? I started making video clips a long time ago. I am happy about collaborations i did and i am open-minded about everything

If you could have directed any film past or present, which would it be? I love a lot of movies, lately i have seen Drive - i really enjoyed it. Also for the soundtrack - Hesher is an incredibile movie. I also love movies like Ex Drummer and Bronson.

New York and London. Do you enjoy shooting musicians/artists more than models? I love shooting musicians, it also depends by the period. I love fashion but sometimes i get bored by it, i just need to have my camera and everything is ok. Do you ever use film when shooting at gigs or do you prefer digital? I prefer film but digital is the future. Obviously for fast daylight shooting i use digital cameras, but if i have enough time i often use old film cameras. What's your most useful bit of kit when shooting at gigs?

I use camera and flash, sensibile films and i try to adapt myself to lights i find. What has been your best gig to shoot so far? I haven’t already done it Do you have a favourite music photographer? Jim Marshall has been a great one. What are you listening to at the moment? I listen to Gardens & Villa. What inspires your documentary film work? What sort of narratives do you like to tell with them? A lot of inspirations comes from music. Music can give the right importance to images, it gives me always good intuitions. Where can we see your work and do you have any exhibitions or published work coming out soon? In march at Jarach Gallery in Venice, Italy where i will present my book published by Dario Salani, my Italian Editor.
