ISN’T SHE LOVELY, SHE’S LILY JAMES

Three years out of drama school, and Lily James has already wracked up an impressive catalogue of work, from playing Desdemona in Othello to her first lead film role in Fast Girls, we caught up with her to talk about corsets, music... and her new role in ITV's period drama Downton Abbey.

INTERVIEW: LILY JAMES As many would say, you have been “graced” with beauty, but have there ever been any occasions where you have found it a hindrance? Felt that people have had preconceptions about you? Ahhh I don’t know about that!! But as an actor you tend to be placed into boxes with regards to casti, and I suppose I often go up for the “young pretty posh” sort of parts. So it’s definitely important to try and show that you are versatile and mix it up a bit. Because really, everyone can get dressed up to look all glamorous especially with the help of great make-up artists and beautiful dresses, but you can also get caught on a bad day (or maybe just the more normal days actually) and not look so great, which is also fine. I definitely want to play all sorts of different roles based on me and my acting, not on my look. Your star has risen in a very short space of time, has it been a shock? What elements of your life have you had to adjust the most because of this? I have loved my career so far and definitely feel so lucky that I have got to do lots of varied work and just to have kept working! But I haven’t had to adjust much yet. I guess things come in waves and there’s all the buzz and excitement when you are promoting a film and during that time I just remind myself to focus on the positives and not get too caught up in the superficial world of it all. But now I am right back to just trying to find another job! Don’t think that ever stops. You have said you related to your character Lisa’s (Fast Girls) competitive personality and blinkered drive – do you ensure you take time to enjoy life? And if so, what do you do in this time? Yes I think I live to real extreme. I need to watch that! During Fast Girls I got really obsessed with the training and it took over my life. That ended up getting me quite down not to mention I got these cysts in my eyes from all the stress and the changes to my diet. But that taught me that you have to keep a balance. I really do enjoy life through working, but it’s definitely not the only thing, its not enough. I need to see friends, go to the pub, try and get away somewhere, listen to music - anything to shut down and live a bit! What is your favourite book and favourite film? Just read Franny and Zooey by J.D Salinger on holiday. Film……. That question is impossible….. but recently watched Marilyn Monroe in ‘Some Like it Hot’. Unbelievable.

While receiving rave reviews playing Desdemona alongside Dominic West in the evening, you were also training six hours a day – sometimes to the point of vomiting for Fast Girls; what drives you? How do you motivate yourself to do something like that? I didn’t have a choice really!!! I was having nightmares about wearing those skimpy running pants and tops. Plus I have always really wanted the challenge to try and change entirely physically for a role. Sort of had Tom Hardy and Natalie Portman in mind! And to be honest, going on stage everynight as Desdemona was a complete joy, nothing would have ever distracted me from that, I didn’t need any motivation! Having played Desdemona, you obviously have an understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare – do you think we have a modern day equivalent? If so, who? And if not, what do you think writers today are missing that Shakespeare had? I think Shakespeare is pretty incomparable, but I recently worked with Martin Crimp and his writing is so guttural and instant, meaning the actor has to do less as it’s all in the words. And I just saw Tender Napalm by Philip Ridley and that was epic and incredibly poetic, had a whole life force behind the writing. Jez Butterworth too, when I watched Jerusalem I was in awe. It’s so provocative and sensual and that is what I love about Shakespeare - the sensuality and rhythm and momentum of it all, which I think, yeah, modern writers can capture too. If you could choose any person in history to play who would it be and why? I love music. I think I can sit and watch old YouTube clips of people like Etta James , Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Chet Baker for longer than I could watch films, so I would love to play a musician in something. Someone like June Carter, but damn it, Reece Witherspoon got there first!!! You have recently joined the cast of Downton Abbey, what can we look forward to from Lady Rose? How would you describe her personality? I am so excited about this series. And it is such an honour to have joined the cast. I cant tell you anything about Lady Rose I am afraid you will have to wait and see... What is the last thing you do at night? Set my alarm and then check it twice! DAPHNE GUINNESS INTERVIEW INTERVIEW BY JADE FITTON, FEATURES EDITOR

Art is no longer restricted to the confines of brush strokes and canvas it can now be anything from a film to nothing at all - yet fashion is still ostracised by the world of art; you seem to be on a mission to change that. Is this correct? And why do you think fashion is yet to be truly accepted by the masses as a form of art? ‘Art’ is a broad term. And I have always understood it as such. The arts dovetail one into another and, one form does not invalidate another. There are subdivisions in such a field, and one persons’ artistic temperament may take the form of paint, another music, another sculpture or film. Fashion is considered by many not be an art form, and in most cases I would agree, but such sweeping statements are not entirely useful. It is plain, to me, that some designers, both contempory and historical are quite clearly artists. I have observed that if someone is an artist they may employ many different mediums. They may grow into to others. Some remain purists. Artists like many human beings are striving for the divine. I have been fortunate not to have taken such judgement at face value, but I have given it, howerver, much thought, as the world has entered a rather different epoch. How would living in a world with only one uniform make you feel? It would depend on the uniform Most people know Andy Warhol as an icon - both for his art and for his appearance, what was he like as a man? He was shy, terribly shrewd and funny.

I did not notice anything unusual about him as I grew up amoungst artists and so to me it re-enforced my idea of the world. I have since realized that the world is not composed entirely of artists. Did he ever give you any good advice? To be wary of advice, people mistrust artists. Fashion movements in the past have always represented a shift in society, a change in a general consciousness. You believe there haven't been any true movements in fashion since the 1980's "at the moment we're just endlessly recycling the past" - Why do you think this is and what do you think this says about our society? Clothing has been used by humans for time immemorial. I dislike the use of the word fashion in its current context. I have said in the past, and even made a short film to describe visually what use politics, cultural tendencies epististomological breaks in history have been taken up by various groups. Up until the mid 90’s, clothing had a wider cultural significance, it was tied to music and politics. I do not see the same profound link today. It has, for the most part become nostalgic and blind to its original identity. An important thing overlooked is that human beings are tribal, clothing was and still in various parts of the world still use paint and clothing to distinguish themselves from one another. What does it mean for us? I hesitate to make a prediction, but my profound HOPE is that the age of imagination is not dead, that the cynicism that seems sometimes to spoil innovation is still alive and there will be more of an interdisciplinary dialogue, artistically

speaking and not just to sell more pointless clothes that say nothing about us Your friendship with Alexander McQueen appeared to be a happy meeting of similar minds, what do you feel you both shared? Shyness and skeptism among strangers, s sense of humor and an imagination. WE HAD A LOT OF EXTREMELY GOOD MOMENTS TOGETHER. Having known Alexander McQueen so well, what was it within him that produced creations of such rare genius? He was innately gifted, he was, quite simply, a visionary. His talent stretched far beyond Clothing design, although that is what he is best known for. He did not settle for anything less than what he wanted. He was constantly striving to improve. He was an extremely hard worker, and expected the same level of loyalty and dedication from those around him, who adored him. I think his apprenticeship at Anderson and Shepphard, the tailor on Saville Row was terribly important. Knowing how to cut and sew in combination with a keen intelligence and vivid imagination is dynamite. Speaking in relation to clothes and their ability to mask insecurities, Nietchze once said “One has to be very grateful to fashion, insofar as it sets that three-quarters free and communicates self-confidence" - How much do you agree with this statement? It very much depends on the day and the people I will see. But I don’t think much about how I will dress, it is one

thing I stopped worrying about years ago!!! This photo-shoot pays homage to the actress and inventor, Hedy Lemarr. Why, out of all the legendary female stars of that era were you particularly drawn to her? My Birthday is the same day. And strangely, one of my great passions is physics and Quantum Physics. There are one or two actresses’ who inspire me, it is a pity they are dead. What is your favourite book? I have many favorite books, ‘A FAREWELL TO ARMS’ by Ernest Hemingway. ‘The Razors Edge’ by Somerset Maugham and ‘Tender is the Night by F.S Fitzgerald You have procured an oscar nominated short film and directed two successful shorts - can we look forward to anything more from you in that medium? I have just begun. And lastly, what are you wearing? A kimono… Thank You Ms Daphne Guinness, a true Beauty Rebel. Interview by Jade Fitton, Features Editor.

OMUT Words by Murray Clarke

Russian brand OMUT is a personal project launched by Moscow-based Anatasia Klimova, and is slowly building a reputation within the womens’ jewellery arena. Klimova takes the trademark Russian industrial edge and adapts it for a contemporary market as manufactured simplicity becomes understated chic. The inclusion of harsh-looking metals hints at the designer’s fondness for raw material: OMUT is every inch a minimalist product. This jagged appeal is juxtaposed with the embroidery techniques of artist Lisa Smirnova in the NAÏVE collaborative collection, mixing Russian rural traditionalism with subculture modernity. The creative

outlook of OMUT somewhat reflects Klimova’s own progression, as her original work mirrors her move from the Russian countryside, to Yaroslavl Art School and finally launching the brand in Moscow. Each piece combines all elements of each landscape, resulting in collections that are endlessly unique. OMUT itself translates as “still waters run deep” – an extremely fitting title. Klimova has escaped the need for fleeting trends, carving out an identity that is Russian to the very core as a national embrace provides the artistic foundation. If Klimova's early work is anything to go by, then OMUT has quite the future ahead.

KIMBERLY INTERVIEWED BY MAX ROGERS Hello Kimberly Wyatt, what are you up to today? Today I'm at the W Hotel in London, doing a photo shoot with Joseph Sinclair for Beauty Rebel. Have you enjoyed yourself? I've had so much fun today, Joseph is one of my favourite people to shoot with, I've had such a great time with my glam team and styling and everything, and this suite here is unbelievable at the W. So I understand you have a makeup brand what is it called? My makeup BMBeauty

brand

is

called

Fantastic, and I want to talk a bit about your makeup brand, what made you decide to launch a makeup brand? I have always had a big passion for makeup, especially being a performer and dancing on stage, I learned how to apply it at quite a young age, and then kind of falling into the entertainment business I've worked with so many professional makeup artists and learnt so many tips along the way. But the problem was I've always dealt with problematic skin, so I just really had a passion to create something that was good for the skin, was all natural, cruelty free, and still offers the products that every girl needs and dreams of. Where did the inspiration come from to launch a makeup brand? BM in BMBeauty stands for beautiful movements and I've been writing blogs, writing poetry and connecting with my fans and relating to them and created a website called Beautiful Movements so it's sort of my portal to stay connected to stay interactive and try and be the change I wish to see in the world. Tell us why the product is different to other brands? BMBeauty is all natural, it's cruelty free and I think it differs from other mineral makeup lines by offering so many different colours and keeping it fun as well as beautiful. What is your favourite product in the range? I have a couple of favourite products in the range, of course, because I made it (giggles) one of them is the new lip gloss, its perfect shade for night or day and the lip glosses are really moisturising for your lips and they don't have any

materials in them that make it stick to your hair, which is always horrible for women, so it glides right off. And I love the foundation, the foundation gives great coverage but it's still all natural so it doesn't clog your pores and can actually help with skin problems because it contains zinc oxide.

you used to be a part of as it were. At the time you were a dancer, was launching a makeup range influenced by the fact you are a dancer, do you have to do anything different as a dancer with your skin regime and how does BMBeauty cater to those needs of a dancer?

So you mention the lip gloss there, what's it called? I just launched a new lip gloss, this summer called Gypsy Spirit it's more of a coral colour to get people ready for the festival season which is one of my favourite times of the year.

Well first of all, being a dancer on stage is tough, because with those hot lights beaming down on you, and dancing the way I dance my entire career, you sweat a whole lot, and I was using all these different liquid foundations and blushers and things and by the middle of our concert, I would have half a face of makeup because it would all sweat off. So I wanted to find products that were sustainable on the skin, and colours that would work on stage and off stage. So I would say I was really inspired for all the choices that we made with BMBeauty's range by being a dancer and being on stage.

Gypsy Spirit is an interesting name, where do you get your inspiration to name the products? All the names I use for the colours and things in BM Beauty derive sort of from my lifestyle really, Iike to think of myself as sort of an earthy princess. I live in this really dreamy fairytale world in my head and so I try and bring that to life in every project that I do. So in naming Gypsy Spirit ...Gypsy Spirit it really came from being close with all my girlfriends in LA. We'd always go to Coachella which is a festival near Los Angeles, we would always joke we were Festival Fairies and Gypsies just having a blast in the sun and listening to amazing music, so that's where it derives from. What are the most popular products in your BMBeauty brand? My most popular products in BMBeauty would be the foundation and the mascara. How did you end up collaborating with your business partner Laura McComiskie? Laura and myself met through a friend of mine, who is in a Scottish band called Drive Blind, signed to the same label as Pussycat Dolls. I became a huge fan of their music and would to to a lot of their gigs in LA, and became friends with her fiancĂŠ Dave. He told me a lot about Laura, and the work she was doing with her line Love The Planet, which is a lot of face scrubs and cleansers and lotions and things. So she came to visit me on tour, we became fast friends, I loved what she stood for and I loved the work she was doing. We found we had the same passion for makeup and the will and the want to create a line together, so we decided to go for it. That's really interesting that you met her while still very much a part of the industry that

And yet they still work off stage! Which celebrities do you think get it right with makeup? Who would you point towards for that? I would say a celebrity that I love who dares to be different and tries new things and has really fun colours is Katy Perry. Lady Gaga definitely takes it there and she's very extravagant with her choices, I love that she at least dares to be different and stands out with her choices. I'm more falling in love with people that sort of just really bring out their natural beauty, I think Nicola Roberts is a gorgeous girl and she caters to her pale skin and does things that just bring out her natural beauty. I think Cheryl Cole is a gorgeous girl, Sienna Miller has an amazing gorgeous face. Yeah I'd say those are a few. And who doesn't get it right? Oh poor Katie Price doesn't get it right most of the time, because she just keeps piling it on. I think that the show girl sort of makeup and lashes and heavy makeup is in the past, and these days it's time to sort of bring out your natural beauty. Less is more as it were? Less is more. To sum up your brand BMBeauty, how would you describe it in three words? Three words to describe BMBeauty, I would say aspirational, fun and eco-conscious. cont...

What beauty tips can you give your fans? I would say first of all, when you are using mineral foundation, put it on the brush, shake it out a bit, and then start from the jawline and work your way up, that way you're not packing product right into the middle of your face. What features do you think should be accentuated for special events? I think it's important to find the contours of your face, when you're getting ready for a special event, so when you see a shadow on your face like under your cheekbones, that's where you contour and use a bronzer to sort of darken that up. Then, when you see the light hit the top of your cheekbones and the top of your nose, and on your chin, that's where you'd use a highlighter to really accentuate your natural beauty, your bone structure. What is your top tip to look after your skin? My absolute top tip is exfoliate at least two to three times a week, you know when you're dancing and sweating and living your everyday life and wearing makeup, it's important to really clean out those pores, so exfoliating and really scrubbing and getting all that excess dirt and makeup off is so important. And drink your water! That's one that I need to follow. Occasionally that might not work, so were you to get a blemish or an imperfection, how would you cover it up? If I were to get a blemish or imperfection, which does happen quite often unfortunately, I wasn't blessed with perfect skin. That's why I chose the concealers and foundations I did in BMBeauty, it's natural minerals give you the coverage that you need, and if you're really going through tough breakouts, I found that if I use a tinted moisturizer on my face and then use a foundation over it, you get clean flawless skin. So fans who know what you're up to today have been tweeting in all day asking questions, we've picked a selection here now, the first is: Is BM Beauty heading to America? I have big plans for BMBeauty, first and foremost I want to get it into retail markets, I want to take it to other countries, USA being probably the first one I'll take it to besides the UK and the great thing though as well is that all the makeup is available on

www.bmbeauty.com and you can order it from all around the world, we ship everywhere.

and freedom in general as a person, and as a business person.

When on a night out what do you love to wear?

So you've been in the Pussy Cat Dolls as a dancer, you've had your own album out with Majesty And The Wolves you now have a makeup range, also Got To Dance. Can we expect anything else from you? What's next for Kimberly Wyatt?

On a night out, depending on the event that I'm going to, or whom I'm hanging out with, I always want to feel sexy and fun, I don't want to be constricted, I want to be able to feel like I can dance if the moment arises, I just want to feel classy but still sexy. What are your style secrets, if you could give us three tips? I would say my style secrets is, less is more, if you're going to show your legs then cover your cleavage, and if you're going to show some cleavage then cover your legs. Dare to be different, try new things, find out what your niche is, and dress to your body shape. What do you love about your personality and what would you change? Hmm I'm perfect! ahh no not at all! I would say the best part of my personality is that I'm passionate, I love what I do and I'm really driven to dream and believe. But I would say that a few things that I would like to change is that I find myself being too nice, too often, I care about others feelings so much that sometimes I forget about my own, and my shyness, I wish I wasn't as shy as I am. What is your favorite song at the moment? My favorite song at the moment, I am actually really feeling Katy Perry's new song, I thinks it's name is Eyes Wide Shut, and the video is phenomenal as well. Do you like Lady Gaga? I can't say I buy, or am a fan of Lady Gaga, but I have massive respect for her, and how she runs her career, she's the brains behind the operation and she works extremely hard, so I have massive respect for Lady Gaga, and she's a brilliant song writer. Have you ever been, or do you think that you might be allergic to men's pajamas? I think men's pajamas are ghastly especially striped ones. How has life changed since leaving the Pussycat Dolls? Since I've left the Pussycat Dolls, I've become the captain of my own career, my own life, I feel like I've had a lot more creative freedom,

Yes I'm still dreaming, and I still believe that my dreams will come true, first and foremost I have a lot of hopes and passions that I'm working on that include perfume, dance and fitness DVDs, other TV shows, dance wear, heels anything that's girly and I'm passionate about I wanna make and in the meantime I'm also creating a show that will involve music, that will involve dancing and will involve amazing visuals, so, yeah I think that there's a lot more to come, nothing that's solid but all dreams that I'm willing to come true. Before you go, we are all looking forward to the next season of Got To Dance, do you have anything to tell us about that? I'm really excited for series four Got To Dance, I'm amazed that we're actually going into series four, and my advice is to just go hard, bring whatever amazing moves you have to the stage and don't forget to tell a story, the key in winning peoples hearts is being able to take them on a journey, so make sure your dances have a beginning middle and end, and tell us a story, express yourself. Well thank you very much Kimberly Wyatt you've taken us on a journey today, we had a beginning, we've done the middle, and this is the end. Raucous laughter... Special thanks to Max Rogers
