The Bitter Chill:

Temperatures in the region are falling fast. The winter months in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey (from mid-October through March) are already seeing a steep drop in temperatures. In many parts of the sub-region, the temperatures fall below zero and are accompanied by wind, rain, and occasional snowfall. Winter is a particularly difficult and dangerous time for infants and children. UNICEF estimates that at least 75,000 children require immediate provision of warm clothes and blankets. Many children continue to live in shelters that are not protected from the elements. UNICEF is urgently mobilising children’s clothing kits and blankets, including baby blankets, along with other winter supplies from around the region and internationally. UNICEF Syria is planning on providing 300,000 beneficiaries with a winterisation package which includes winter clothes for children, sleeping mats, blankets, plastic sheeting, hygiene kits and cooking sets.

Syria & surrounding countries: Key supplies

(Local/regional and international procurement planned and delivered - commencing November 2012)
