Clarify The Challenge: Project: Developing Natural Waste

End goals:

Issues:

Reuse throwned away natural waste from either agriculture or household

Waste has been thrown away and has sometimes been manage unefficiently

Tackle waste problem

plastics waste problem from household

Raise waste value

Can be seen easily from supermarket and gloceries shopping

How can we reuse waste from either agriculture or household and turn into packaging?

1 DESK RESEARCH

Plastics waste problem

The first idea came from my personal experience during summer vacation when I have internship in Thailand. Thailand has a name about street food market where you can eat anywhere, anytime, and anything. Some food are oily, some are soup and moist. The most popular containers they use are foam tray and plastics.

2 DESK RESEARCH

Plastics waste problem in the UK

I decide to explore more on the problem in the UK as it seems to be difficult to explor problem in Thailand from here. Groceries in the UK the selling the supermarket usually covered by plastics, eventhough some of them are not necessary to.

3 OBSERVATION

Groceries in supermarket and GRAINGER MARKET

Plastics been use as a packaging in different form, mostly as bag, tray, stickers. From overview, purpose of packaging is - protection: scratch, air, temperature, etc. - portion control - less touching from customer - branding - product details

4 INTERVIEW

Groceries in plastics?

Bryan Muers & Son is one of groceries shops in Grainger market. They try to avoid using plastics bag in the shop but could not avoid as some of groceries they bought has already been dressed up by middleman.

"I bought from sellers and they are already come like this; covering with plastics" - Bryan Muers & Son's owner .

-A tray of eggs I bought from them actually wraped by plastics sheet in layers.

5 DESK RESEARCH

Plastics bag VS Paper bag

Paper bag is a solution? - NO Decomposable, but Higher carbon footprints.

Fiction: Paper bags are more ecofriendly as they are recyclable, made from a renewable resource, and biodegradable

Fact: Plastic shopping bags outperform paper bags environmentally – on manufacturing, on reuse, and on solid waste volume and generation.

7 OBSERVATION

Fresh market in London

Location: Portabello road Here, stock flows better as they have more population. Some imported goods are covered by packaging but less plastics packaging than in newcastle. Interesting point is they use plastic bowls to control portion. In the very busy situation, custome will have no choice but pick up the whole, best looking, bowl.

10 INTERVIEW

"SUOLO ETICO" and organic farmer connection

Suolo Etico is a middleman, selling organic products that I found in Portabello market. The middleman will collect goods from organic farm in there collection before the dawn for selling in the market. Not only fresh fruits and vegetables, but they sell snacks, spread, or pasta for more varieties. Product selling here seems to link with niche customer group, so they sell stuff in higher price than normal but less stock flows than normal shop.

11 INTERVIEW

How "SUOLO ETICO" goes zero waste

The owner told more about farm nowaday is very sustainable, which developing together with zero wast management. Not only selling groceries but also manage all fresh fruits to not wasted. Suolo Etico selling juice or smooties in additional to increase stock flows. Moreover, they build connection with cafes and restaurant that share the same believes to give the remaining fresh fruits and vegs in cheaper price.

12 OBSERVATION

LADBROKE GROVES'S FARMER MARKET

Placing near portabello road, in the very small area. Here is a place where several farmers from surrounding near London selling there stuff without passing through the middleman. Advantages: - Connection with community - Higher profits? as they not need to share profit with middleman.

• Material

Every exploration works based on food ingredients and some natural sources that might easily find in nature place, through the process that can be done by kitchen tools.

41

1 DESK RESEARCH

Waste to material

Pararelly with researching on agricultural side, I have been look more on material from organic sources.

2 DESK RESEARCH

Waste water management

Before I start to scope on food waste, I used to focusing on waste water treatment as I saw an opportunity from them. These plants grow fast, able to handle harsh weather, and usually ended as animal food. These plants can clean manure in water.

NOTES

45

3 PROBLEM

Plant shortage

David adviced to get real plants and see the differences of potential of all plants to clean water. The project started around Fall to winter, that means the difficulties to find plants for experiment. Some like duckweed is not for sales as well. I found only anti-duckweed chemical selling online.

NOTES

46

Change direction of the aim>> goes more on food waste from daily life.

47

4 PROBLEM OBSERVATION

Free plants

I try to look around the city to find free plant I might can get for free. However, it was not easy to take the whole plant alive. some of them stuct in the ground deeply. Some of them gone with summer.

5 EXPERIMENT

YEAST

Yeast can use for fermentation and its membrain can be use as bioplastics. So I tried with random ingredients such as the hornworth or papaya, but it not work well.

6 EXPERIMENT

Papaya skin

The outcome is not very well as the material not bonding well enought. But the outcome of colour is interesting. The skin is more flexible and stonger when it not completely dry.

7 EXPERIMENT

Banana peel and orange skin

These are making of thin sheet from bananas and orange peels puree. Distinct smell flew all over the kitchen after I dry them in the oven, and i think it’s the unique point of these materials. The sheet from orange skin is pretty fragile when completely dry, but strong enough if making it 2mm-3mm thick. Puree sheet seems to keep the shape flat better if let it dry with wind instead of heat in the oven. It would be more interesting if it can be bleach or dye in different colour.

8 EXHIBITION

A boot for mars grown with human sweat

The boot made from mycelium. Mycelium is a fungus I first know when I read about fungus foam box. It has been use as a biopackaging. I partly thinking in the future if mycelium been use as much as plastics in nowaday, will we got a problem if the fungus spore is overwhelmed flew in the air.

9 EXPERIMENT

Reed

Reed straw was cutted from a pond near Wylam Brewery in Town Moor park. This material actually my very first choice for making material because the stem is totally a good fiber for making products. Reeds’ stem got a flxible fiber when it soaked in the water. I separated the stem and their peels because they have different texture and strength.

10 EXPERIMENT

Onion Peel, Pineapple Skin, Banana peel

From left >> right Onion peels, I mix red and normal onion, break them down into smaller pieces and mix with tapioca starch. Then dry it in microwave. Break easily. Pineapple skin, blended and dry in microwave. It is a sweet fruit so I found that the bottom side got a very nice smooth texture. Its fiber also an other factor make it bond more firm. Banana peel with reed, gave better look when mixing both of them together. Banana peel has a very good strenght to keep its shape NOTES

11 EXPERIMENT

Tapioca Starch

Tapoica Starch can be use as a nature glu. It is actually been use as a bioplastic as well. To use it, I firstly use 1:1 starch with water, then heat in the pan, keep stiring quickly. From the picture is starch with onion peel that not completely grounded, then dry it by the oven, low heat.

NOTES

64

Light Reflection >> could be furniture?

65

12 EXPERIMENT

Tapioca Starch

Starch with reed seems to be the best outcome that has a good potential to use as packaging. I personally like the second one as it semi-transparent and have a good light reflex.

13 EXPERIMENT

Molding

I tried making an orange peel cup by placing the foil cup upside down and cover top with orange peel puree then oven with low heat. The outcome could not be said as successful as it partly keep the shape but it burned some part as well, but at least it is possible.

NOTES

68

Should be lower heat or wind dry

69

14 DESK RESEARCH

Molding

The picture is a leaf cup, set the shape by pressed with heat till the material goes dry. It is waterproof, less process of making and also easy to find material in topical coutry.

NOTES

ใบทองกวาว Thong kwao leaf

71

15 EXPERIMENT

Change Shape

I tried making orange peel mix with reed with hope it will bond stronger. I soften it down by vapor and then try to press in a cup shape.(I used foil cup) It 'kind of ' working (?) I think I need a proper tool that can help me press it in a good shape .

NOTES

72

The mold have to be a proper made

73

+ Some material is fragile when it dry but more flexible when slightly wet. What David adviced is mix it with plastics, but I want to keep it organic. Should try more in different shapes, different thickness

IDEA 1

Souvenior from food waste

Each food has various ingredients, each ingredients has their own colour, so how each plate will represent colour in overall differently. This idea will be a product with campaign to noticing people about what has been thrown away every dishes they order.

Build bond in the community.

Reflex food waste problem in every meal.

IDEA 2

Packaging from raw material

Exploring way to use nature material to pack fresh fruits and vegs by trying to use raw form of leftover parts or using some other plants such as reeds or leaves.

Second purpose of the waste

Reduce using of plastics packaging

NOTES

90

Meeting with Antony, he seems to have an image of what this idea can be develop the most in among of 3 ideas.

IDEA 3

Temporary Toy Making Kit From Food Waste

Build imagination

Tool kit for children to design their colourful toy by themself by explore colour of nature. The tool kit is easy as they can use only microwave or oven to heat up the toy.

Learning colour in nature

Let children enjoy cooking time together with parent without disrupting cooking area.

Reduce unorganic toy waste.

NOTES

92

In among of 3 ideas, Antony seems to worry about this idea the most. He brougth up a few negative situations as warning, such as hygenic reason. Izzy did said similarthing as well 93

NEXT STAGE

The second idea seems to work the most. From the interim, I need to make a decision on specific material to focus on.
