CONCEPT HEALING ARCHITECTURE

BIOPHILIA

HUMANIZATION

Our goal is to engage patients in the process of healing and speedy recovery. So spaces should be designed to reduce patients and family stress. Biophilia means nature; and when integrated with humanistic design approach is found to support cognitive function, physical health, and psychological well-being. Tools and methods of Biolphilia for healthcare humanization• Visual connection with nature • Natural light and proper ventilation health care spaces • Utilization of plants in health care facilities

.E S CAP E . The Living Museum The brief was to resolve a critical issue for Sardinian small villages and museums i.e. “take away tourism”. The chance to offer a sort of Eco-hotel facility within the Nivola Museum complex might help to counter this take-away dynamic, fostering a different and maybe “one of a kind” type of touristic experience. The aim is to avoid massive buildings that generally neglect the context. In fact, the intention is to design small-scale structures capable of enhancing the value of the magnificent natural site.

THE SITE LOCATION: Orani, Sardinia SITE AREA: 10400 sq. m Orani is a commune in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia. It is known for the “Nivola Museum” after Constantino Nivola where his work was exhibited. Surrounded by olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, the Nivola Museum is located in a privileged scenographic position capable of captivating any visitor. It is an institution devoted to life and the work of Costantino Nivola within the larger context of contemporary art, landscape and living traditions, and hosts the largest collection of his smaller scale work. Aside from exhibiting Nivola’s work, the museum produces temporary exhibitions on a regular basis

ABOUT CONSTANTINO NIVOLA Constantino Nivola was an artist, a sculptor, muralist, designer, and a teacher born in Orani. His major sculptural work is abstract, large-scale architectural reliefs in concrete, made in his own sand casting and cement carving processes. Nivola endeavored to create a world where art binds communities together.

CAMUFFARE An exquisite natural concinity

The design serves as a retreat of exploration and contemplation.

The orientation of the modules towards the city and the museum not only gives impeccable views attracting more visitors, but also promotes ventilation which becomes a prominent feature of the design sitting in a humid climate. The design complements and puts forth the museum in its absolute eminence rather than overshadowing it. The site represents Sardinia island in the sense of giving an all encompassing experience of the island to the visitors which is achieved by a vernacular approach. These modules coalesce into a unified form through the use of elevated pathways that discern a close affinity with the swirling streams that surround and connect small islands. These notable vernacular elements in a contemporary setting give a calming experience to the tourists and prompts them to explore the heritage and culture of the place, rather than a mere visit to the museum.

40 | PORTFOLIO | Residential Cabin Design

SITE IN THE FORM OF ARCHIPELAGO The close resemblance of the site extremities to the periphery of Sardinia map is observed and experimented to represent the isolated nature of an island to the scattered modules all over the site connected through elevated pathways just as water connects an Archipelago.

AIR FLOW DIAGRAM

CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATION OF ORIENTATION OF MODULE The orientation of the modules towards the city and the museum not only gives impeccable views attracting more visitors, but also promotes ventilation which becomes a prominent feature of the design sitting in a humid climate.

The placement of fenestration in the modules have been designed to maximize cross ventilation within the module that controls the ambient temperature and high humidity levels.

MODULES TYPOLOGY

Our design incorporates three typologies of modules serving essentially 1,2 and 4 people per pod. The form of each of these modules is derived by rotating and resizing the basic unit as per serving needs. CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATION OF WIND MOVEMENT IN MODULES The overall Orientation of the module welcomes the prevailing wind from the eastern side.

INTERIOR DETAILS The cabins welcome the visitors into white opulence, synonymous to the interiors of the museum . Wood used in the structure gives an organic essence to the design, thereby making them merge with the sinuous natural topography of the site. Local materials like marsh grass, twigs are used for doors, tables, chairs, etc. along with the local basket weaving process and materials used in making chandeliers. A wall mural made by Costantino Nivola’s sand casting technique integrates with the design and hence becomes a striking element. This approach accentuates local craftsmanship, promotes tourism, hence increasing economy. These notable vernacular elements in a contemporary setting give a calming experience to the tourists and prompts them to explore the heritage and culture of the place.
