APlaceisidentifiedbyitsculture,landscape,andhistory.WhenthesupercontinentofGondwanalanddriftednortheast,itclashedwiththe EurasianplateandgavebirthtothemightyHimalayanrange.TheHimalayanrangerunsfromnorthwesttoeastcoveringPakistan,India,Nepal, China,Tibet,andBhutan.

TheHimalayanRangeismadeupoffourprominentranges,thegreaterHimalayas,thecentralHimalayanrange,andthelowerHimalayan ranges.Thesettlementofpeopleintheseregionsisbelievedtohaveoccurredaround1500B.C.Themigrationsofsettlementsincludedpeople fromdifferentraceslikeAryans,Mongloids,andNegroidsthathappenedduetoinvasionsandconquestsintheseregions. LandscapecultureisverymuchdefinedandcenteredintheHimalayasduetoitsdistinctiveandpeculiarfeaturesthataredirectlyreflectedinits settlementpatterns,culture,andarchitecture.ClimateisthedrivingforceintheHimalayaswithitsextremitiesthatarenowherefoundinother partsoftheworld.Withthesouthernrangeshavingasub-tropicalclimatetothenorthernaridregions,itcontainsamyriadoflandscapesthat directlyplayapartindefiningthecharacterofthesettlements.Itisobservedthatmostofthesettlementsexistinthevalleysalongtheriversthat formduetotheglacialmeltingfromthegreaterHimalayas.Avalleyplaysaroleofacontainerthatinitselfisaself-sufficientsystem.Avalley isarestrictivegeographicalformwherelandexpansionislimitedduetowhichthearchitectureoftheplaceisdirectlyimpacted. Indigenouspracticesofaplaceareacontinuousprocessthatoccursacrossgenerationsofaplacebyadaptingtoaplace’sterrain,climate, andspirituality.Here,thedesignthinkingisnotdrivenbyartisticfactorsbutratherdealswiththeculturalidentityofthecommunity.Similarly,in HimachalPradesh,theindigenouscommunityovergenerationshasadaptedtoavariedstyleofdesignthatwasdevelopedduetotheharsh climate,landscape,availabilityoflocalmaterials,andthemountainculture.ThisstyleisknownastheKathKhunistyleofarchitecture.This styleisdeeplyrootedintheculturalandtraditionalpracticesoftheplace.Thestyledevelopedoveryearsandgenerationsofexperimentation thatoccurredbyobservingthenaturalpatternsoftheclimate,naturalcalamityliketheseasonaltremors,theshiftinglandscape,etc.,Thestyle wasdevelopedkeepingtheculturalidentityofHimachalPradeshinmind.DuetotheisolationfromotherpartsofIndia,thisstyledevelopedas indigenoustothisplacebyutilizingthelocalmaterialsandthiscanalsobeviewedinthewaythedetailingisdoneonwoodthatisveryspecific tothisplace.

ThepeopleofHimachalbelievemainlyinspiritualandreligiouspracticesandworshipnatureasgod,hencethetempleisoneoftheimportant publicspacestobedesigned.Aswhencomparedtoplains,thesettlementsinthemountainshappenmostlyalongthevalleywherespaceis restricted,hencetheplacementofthetempleisinthecenterofthesettlement,andthespacearounditisverycarefullycalculatedanddesigned. Indigenouspracticesarethevitalsourceofupholdingaplace’scultureandheritage.Thesepracticesaddmorevaluetothelandscape.With theincreasingurbanization,itissadtoseetheshiftingchangeintheculturallandscapeofHimachal.Newerbuildingmethodsandtechnologies arefailingtoabsorbtheessenceoftheplaceandaremoregeneric.

Waterisavitalessenceneededforourdailylives.WaterservicesarethebackboneofsustaininglifeonEarth.Acommunity’ssustenanceis alwaysdrawnoutfromitscapacitytoprovidewatertoitsinhabitants.Infrastructureisanorganizedstructurethathelpsinmakingtransportation, movement,andservicesmoreefficientlyavailabletotheend-users.

OneoftheearliestobservedsystemsofwaterandsanitationinfrastructurecanbetracedbacktotheIndusValleyCivilization,wheretheurban centershadawell-designedsystemofdrainage.AlsoobservedintheRomancivilizationweretheAquaductsthathelpedincarryingwaterto thehighlypopulatedcitiesfromthecityoutskirts.Theancientwaysofwaterservicesledtothedevelopmentofamoresystemicwayofwater infrastructure.

Cleanandsafedrinkingisadirenecessityintoday’sgrowingcities.Twomainsectorsthatuselargeamountsofwaterareagricultureand housing.Duetomishandlingofwaterresourcesandinsufficientinvestmentinthewatersector,thewatersystemisfailingtoprovideforthe demand.Theuncontrolledflowoffactoryeffluentandpollutionintroducechemicalsintothewatercycle,whichthenenterthefoodchain.There isalsoanimbalanceintheproportionsofwaterlentouttotheurbancentersandtheruralsettlements.Thenaturalgroundwaterisreducing inquantityduetotheroadconstructionusingtarthatdoesn’tabsorbthesurfacerunoff.So,inturn,communitiesareoptingforborewellsand manmadewaterstructuresthataredepletingthenaturalaquifers.

Asdesigners,ourgoalhastobetoprovidecatchmentsystemsforrainwaterinourdesignsthatwillhelpretaingroundwaterandprovidealocal useofwaterratherthanstrainingtheexistingsystems.Thoroughscrutinyandstudyofthesiteanditssurroundingsisindeedanaddedfacet whendesigningthebuildinginfrastructure.
