Title: Facts About Wireless Modems Date: 30.04.2012. Student: Marina Novakovic Subject: Information and Communications Technologies A wireless modem is a device that makes it possible for computers to join a WLAN (wireless area network). As the name suggests, this can be done without the use of Ethernet wires or other physical cabling. Properties and Function These modems have different designs. Some use Wi-Fi protocols, while others rely on cellular or satellite protocols. Any of these can be used to hook up to a WLAN. Once connected, Web services can be provided. These modems are different from DSL modems and dial up connections that rely on phone lines to connect to the Web. Cable modems on the other hand, use cable television lines. Internet Hotspots By using a wireless modem card, a laptop can access the Web via Internet hotspots. These are areas with WLAN enabled. A WLAN enabled area means physical cabling is not required. Networks rely on different protocols. Modems are also compatible with different architectures. The most widely used network for these modems is Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity). Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly popular in Internet cafes. With its advent, the other protocols are becoming obsolete. That being said, most of these modems are compatible with various protocols and standards. If you are using a specific network, make sure the modem is compatible with it. Features to Look for These modems have different features, but the following are some of the most important. First would be the modem speed. Second, your modem should have support for various networks. Aside from Wi-Fi, other widely used protocols are EVDO, ISDN, GPRS and Ethernet. Modem frequency bands include UHF, VHF 23 GHz, 5 Hz, 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz. Radio techniques should include frequency hopping and direct sequence spread spectrum. You should also check the number of channels it can receive and transmit. Another important feature is the maximum signal strength. It is also recommended that you get a modem with full duplex capability. A full duplex capability allows for simultaneous data retrieval and transmission. Other Information Some of these modems can also be hooked up to cable or DSL. Using wireless network adapter cards, the computers in an office or household can interact using the broadband

modem. This removes the need to install wires for all the computers, be it laptop or desktop. These wireless network cards can be an external adapter or PCMCIA. Make sure that the modem and the adapter are compatible with one another. Modem manufacturers usually make their own cards. It is best if you get the modem and adapter from the same brand. It ensures compatibi8lity. The technology surrounding wireless modems is always changing. The standards you see today may be obsolete a few months from now. Always conduct some research to avoid getting left behind. Used references: http://www.tech-faq.com/wireless-modems.html http://www.askdeb.com/blog/internet/how-to-choose-a-modem/
