SREE SHIVANAAMA SANKIRTANAM

श्री शिवनाम संिीतिनं ॥ महे श्वरे वा जितामाधीश्वरे , जनादि ने वा जिदन्तरात्मने न वस्तुभेद िततिपत्तरम्स्त में तथापि भावसतरूणेन्दि ु ेखरे ॥ १ ॥ Maheshvare vaa jagataamadheesvare, Janaardane vaa jagadantaraatmani, Na vastubheda pratipattirasti me, Tathaapi bhaavastarunendushekhare

Though I perceive no difference between Shiva, supreme Lord of the Universe, and Vishnu, the Soul of the Universe, still my heart inclines toward the youthful ever-vibrant Shiva. वंदे दे वमुमािततम ् सुरिुरुं, वंदे जित्िारणम ्, वंदे िंनिभष ू णम मि ू ां िततम, ृ धरं ,वंदे ि​िन

वंदे सय ू -ि ि​िांि-वम्नननयनं,वंदे मि ु ु न्द-पियं,

वंदे भक्तजनाश्रयंिा वरदं , वंदे शिवम ् िंिरं ॥ २ ॥ Vande devamumaapatim suragurum, Vande jagatkaaranam, Vande pannaga-bhooshanam mrigadharam, Vande pashoonaam patim, Vande soorya-shashaanka-vahni-nayanam, Vande mukunda-priyam, Vande bhakta-janaashrayanca varadam, Vande shivam shankaram

I bow down to Shiva, he who is divine, the consort of Uma, the guru of gods: I bow down to He who is the cause of the Universe; I bow down to He who is adorned with serpents, who wears deerskin; I bow down to He who is the Lord of all beings: I bow down to He whose three eyes are sun,


moon and fire; I bow down to He who is dear to Sri Krishna: I bow down to He who is the refuge of the devotees and the bestower of boons; I bow down to Shiva! Shankara! िािं भस्मशसतम शसतंि हशसतं, हस्ते ि​िालं शसतम, खट्वाङ्िं ि शसतम शसतश्ि वष ृ भः िरणे शसते िुण्डले, िंिा-फेनशसता जटा ि​िुितेः, िन्द्रः सीतो मूधति न,

सोयम-सविसीतो ददातु पवभवं, िािक्षयं सविदा ॥ ३ ॥ Gaatram bhasmasitam sitanca hasitam, Haste kapaalam sitam, Khatvaangam ca sitam sitasca vrishabhah, Karne site kundale, Gangaa-phenasitaa jataa Pashupateh, Candrah sito moordhani, Soyam-sarva-sito dadaatu vibhavam, Papa-kshayam sarvadaa

O Shiva! Your body covered with ashes is white; when you smile, your white teeth shine; the skull you hold in your hand is white; your clube is white; your bull is white; your earrings are white; your matted locks covered with the foam of the Ganga are white; the moon on your head is white; may You who are all white take away all my sins and grant me well-being. अशसतगिररसमं स्यात्तिज्जलम शसंधुिािे, सुरतरुवरिाखा लेखनी ि​िमुवी,

शलखतत यर्द िह ृ ीत्वा िारदा सवि​िालम,

तदपि तव िण ु ानामीि िारं न यातत ॥ ४ ॥ Asitagirisamam syaatkajjalam sindhu-paatre, Surataruvarashaakhaa lekhanee patramurvee, Likhati yadi griheetvaa shaaradaa sarva-kaalam,


Tadapi tava gunaanaameesha paaram na yaati

O Lord! Ifthe blue mountain were ink, the ocean an ink pot, the branch of the heavenly tree (Parijata) a pen, and the earth a writing leaf, and if Sharada, the Goddess of Learning, taking these, were to write through eternity, even then the extent of your virtues would not be exhausted. आत्मा तवं गिररजा मततः, सहिराः िाणाः िरीरं िह ृ ं, िूजा ते पवषयोप्भोि-रिना, तनद्रा समागधम्स्थततः

संिारः िादयोः िदक्षक्षणपवगधः, स्तोिाणण सवाि गिरो यद्, यत्िमि िरोशम तत्तदणखलं, िंभो तवाराधनम ् ॥ ५ ॥ Aatmaa tvam Girijaa matih, Sahacaraah praanaah shareeram graham, Poojaa te vishayopa-bhoga-racanaa, Nidraa samaadhi-sthitih Sancaarah padayoh pradakshina-vidhih, Stotraani sarvaa giro yad, Yat-karma karomi tattadakhilam, Shambho tavaaraadhanam

O Lord! You are my Atman, Girija is my mind; my life-breaths are your companions; mybody is your abode. I place my pleasures before you in homage; my sleep is a state of absorption; my walking is your circumambulation; the words I speak are prayers to you; all my activities are your worship. नान्या तष ृ ा ि​िुिते हृर्द में त्वदीये,गित्तम वहाशम िरणे ि​िुिािनाशिन,तनष्ठां िदे र्ह िरमां त्वतय ब्रनमरूिे, तनदोष-िूणि ि ररतम िुरु माम दृतंि ॥ ६ ॥ Naanyaa trishaa Pashupate hridi me tvadeeye, Cittam vahaami carane Pashu-paasha-naashin, Nishthaam pradehi paramaam tvayi Brahmaroope,


Nirodosha-poorna-caritam kuru maam dritanca

O Shiva, destroyer of my bonds, my heart has no other desire than to be directed to your feet; grant me steadfast devotion to you, the absolute Brahman, and quickly make my character stainless. ॐ श्री िौरी-िणेिा-षडानन-िररवार-समेत, श्री िंिानन िरब्रनमणे नमः ॐ नमः शिवाय िान्ताय, िंिराय नमो-नमः ॥ ७ ॥ Om Shree Gouree-Ganesha-Shadaanana-parivaara-sameta, Shree pancaanana Parabrahmane namah Om namah Shivaaya Shaantaaya, Sankaraaya namo-namah

Om! We bow to the five-faced One, Absolute Brahman, along with His rretinue; Gauri, Ganesh, Shadaanana. Om! We bow and bow to Shiva, Shankara, the embodiment of serenity.

Indivisible Supreme Being, deep ocean of mercy, source of unlimited virtue and joy, Shiva! Hara! He who wears the crescent moon on His Splendid Head, God of gods, Lord of mountains, Shiva! Hara! Primeval Supreme Being. Eternal Brahman, he who is fully absorbed in the nectar of His own bliss. All- auspicious, Shiva! Hara! Ocean of unlimited virtue, Lord of the moon, Shiva, mountain dweller. God of gods. Shiva! Hara! He who is served by gods and devotees, worshipped by Sri Vishnu, and prayed to by Indra and other gods, the Father. Shiva! Hara! Weider of the trident adorned by the serpent, slayer of Andhaka (a demon), blue-throated one, Shiva! Hara! Protector and destroyer of the three worlds, slayer of foes, bestower of bliss, Shiva! Hara! िशलमल-नािन शिव िंिानन, रावण-सेपवत वरद शिव हर, सांि. ॥ ३ ॥ Eesha Mahesha natesha kripaarnava, Keshava-sevita poorna Shiva Hara, Maayaadheeshwara natana-manohara, Akhila-janaashraya shreshtha Shiva Hara, Shambhu-trilocana mouli-vibhooshana Danuja-vinaashana bhayada Shiva Hara, Kalimala-naashana Shiva pancaanana, Raavana-sevita varada Shiva Hara, Samba.


Supreme Lord and Master, foremost dancer, ocean of compassion. He who is served by Sri Krishna, who is whole and complete, Shiva! Hara! Sovereign ruler of Maya, delightful dancer, refuge of all, most beloved, Shiva! Hara! Three-eyed one, granter of prosperity, he whose head is crowned, who destroyed the descendants of Danu, feared one, Shiva! Hara! Destroyer of the evils of Kaliyuga, five-faced Shiva, He who is worshipped by Ravanana, who is the giver of boons, Shiva! Hara! Saamba Sadaa Shivaa! मन्मथ-िासन ज्ञान-हुतािन, यततजन-तोषण रुगिर् शिव हर , भव ु न-माहे श्वर गिन्मय-दीि​ि, ऐश्वयािम्न्वत मोद शिव हर , एिानेि स्वरुि सदाशिव, ्याघ्राम्िार-धर सुभि शिव हर ,

हृदय-पविासन मततमल-नािन, फणीिण-भूषण मधुर शिव हर, सांि. ॥ ४ ॥ Manmatha-shaasana jnaana-hutaashana, Yatijana-toshana rucira Shiva Hara, Bhuvana-Maheshwara cinmaya-deepaka, Aishwaryaanvita moda Shiva Hara, Ekaaneka-swaroopa Sadaa-Shiva, Vyaaghraambara-dhara subhaga Shiva Hara, Hridaya-vikaasana matimala-naashana, Phani-gana-bhooshana madhura Shiva Hara, Saamba.

Subduer of Manmatha (the god of passion), fire of divine knowledge, He who gratifies monks, shining one, Shiva! Hara! Supreme Lord of the universe, awakener of pure intelligence, almighty Lord full of joy, Shiva! Hara! He, who is one as well as many, who is ever auspicious, who is clad in a tiger skin, who is blessed, Shiva! Hara! He, who opens the heart and destroys the mind’s impurities, who is adorned by serpents, enchanting one, Shiva! Hara! Saamba Sadaa Shiva!


त्र्यम्ि​ि-भाि​िव िम्ू जत िंिर, मोह -पवनाि​ि िोध

शिव हर,

जन्म-ज़रा-मरणार्द पवनािन, तोष-पववधिन िभ ु द शिव हर,

सुर-दल-नायि जय-सुख-िारि, दोष-तनवारि धवल शिव हर,

ताि​िय-हर वदन-मनोहर, नंदीश्वर-शिव िरम शिव हर, सांि. ॥ ५ ॥ Tryambaka-Bhaargava poojita Shankara, Moha-vinaashaka boddha Shiva Hara, Janma-jaraa-maranaadi vinaashana, Tosha-vivardhana shubhada Shiva Hara, Sura-dala-naayaka jaya-sukha-kaaraka, Dosha-nivaaraka dhavala Shiva Hara, Taapa-traya-hara vadana-manohara, Nandeeshwara-Shiva carama Shiva Hara, Saamba.

Three-eyed one who is worshipped by Parasurama, benefactor who dispels delusion, embodiment of wisdom, Shiva Hara! Destroyer of the cycle of birth, old age and death; he who confers more and more contentment, delight, and good fortune, Shiva! Hara! He who leads the army of gods, who causes success and happiness, who removes the blemishes of sin, who embodies purity, Shiva! Hara! He who puts an end to the three kinds of afflictions, whose face enchants, who is the master of Nandi (the bull), Shiva who is the ultimate goal, Shiva! Hara! Saamba Sadaa Shiva! पवनय-िसारि ितत-मतत-दायि, िीर-िभ ु -साधि सतत शिव हर, ओम्िार-पिय योगि-जनाश्रय, अजरामर-वर धीि शिव हर,

तनिण ुि -िुणमय भुवनाधीश्वर, तनज-जन-िालि सौम्य शिव हर,

िरुणा-सािर िान्त सद् ु धाणिव, साधि-र्हतिर वंद्य शिव हर, साम्िा.॥ ६ ॥

Fountain of humility, giver of refuge and wisdom, doer of lasting good, eternal one, Shiva! Hara! He to whom Om is precious, refuge of yogis, ever youthful, immortal one, Lord of knowledge, Shiva! Hara! He who both embodies virtue and is beyond virtue, Lord of the Universe, protector of devotees, gentle one, Shiva! Hara! Ocean of compassion and nectar, peaceful one, Shiva, benefactor of spiritual aspirants, venerable one, Shiva! Hara! Saamba Sadaa Shiva! त्रिल्वदल-पिय ध्यानीश्वर शिव, ्योमामिर-धर दतयत शिव हर, िौरी-पियिर दीन-जनाश्रय, श्रीितत-िम्ू जत िणव शिव हर,

िाि-पवमोिन ताि-तनवारण, भव-भय-नािन रौद्र शिव हर, िामेश्वर-शिव नटराजेश्वर, श्रीिरमेश्वर भा्य शिव हर, सांि. ॥ ७ ॥ Bilva-dala-priya dhyaaneeshwara Shiva, Vyomaambara-dhara dayita Shiva Hara, Gouree-priyakara deena-janaashraya, Shreepati-poojita pranava Shiva hara, Shaapa-vimocana taapa-nivaarana, Bhava-bhaya-naashana roudra Shiva Hara, Kaameshwara-Shiva nataraajeshwara, Shree-parameshwara bhaavya Shiva Hara, Saamba.

I am neither the mind, nor the intellect, nor the ego, nor the mind-stuff; मनो िुध्यहङ्िार गित्तातन नाहं

न ि श्रोि म्जनवा न ि घ्राणनेिम ् । न ि ्योम भशू मर्-न तेजो न वायःु

न वा सप्तधातुर-् न वा िञ्ि िोिाः ।


नवाक्िाणण िादौ न िोिस्थ िायू

I am neither the Prana, nor the five vital airs; I am neither the materials of the body, nor the five sheaths; Neither am I the organs of action, nor object of the senses; I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss AbsoluteI am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham). न मे द्वेषरािौ न मे लोभमोहो मदो नैव मे नैव मात्सयिभावः । न धमो न िाधो न िामो न मोक्षः गिदानन्द रूिः शिवोहं शिवोहम ् ॥ ३ ॥ na me dveṣarāgau na me lobhamoho mado naiva me naiva mātsaryabhāvaḥ | na dharmo na cārdho na kāmo na mokṣaḥ cidānanda rūpaḥ śivohaṃ śivoham

I have neither aversion nor attachment, neither greed nor delusion; neither egotism nor envy, neither Dharma nor Moksha; I am neither desire nor objects of desire; I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute-I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham). न िुण्यं न िािं न सौख्यं न दःु खं

न मन्िो न तीधं न वेदा न यज्ञः ।


अहं भोजनं नैव भोज्यं न भोक्ता गिदानन्द रूिः शिवोहं शिवोहम ् ॥ ४ ॥ na puṇyaṃ na pāpaṃ na saukhyaṃ na duḥkhaṃ na mantro na tīrdhaṃ na vedā na yaṅñaḥ | ahaṃ bhojanaṃ naiva bhojyaṃ na bhoktā cidānanda rūpaḥ śivohaṃ śivoham

I am neither sin nor virtue, neither pleasure nor pain; Nor temple nor worship, nor pilgrimage nor scriptures, Neither the act of enjoying, the enjoyable nor the enjoyer; I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute-I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham). अहं तनपवि​िल्िो तनरािार रूिो पवभत्ू वाछि सवि​ि सवेम्न्द्रयाणाम ् ।

न वा िन्धनं नैव मुम्क्त न िन्धः ।

गिदानन्द रूिः शिवोहं शिवोहम ् ॥ ५ ॥ ahaṃ nirvikalpo nirākāra rūpo vibhūtvācca sarvatra sarvendriyāṇām | na vā bandhanaṃ naiva mukti na bandhaḥ | cidānanda rūpaḥ śivohaṃ śivoham

I am certainty; I am formless; I am the supreme sovereign; I am everywhere and yet beyond the senses; I am unallied, beyond liberation, immeasurable; I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute-I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham). न मत्ृ युर-् न िङ्िा न मे जातत भेदः पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्म ।


न िन्धरु -् न शमिं िरु ु नैव शिष्यः

गिदानन्द रूिः शिवोहं शिवोहम ् ॥ ६ ॥ na mṛtyur-na śaṅkā na me jāti bhedaḥ pitā naiva me naiva mātā na janma | na bandhur-na mitraṃ gururnaiva śiṣyaḥ cidānanda rūpaḥ śivohaṃ śivoham

I have neither death nor fear of death, nor caste; Nor was I ever born, nor had I parents, friends, and relations; I have neither Guru, nor disciple; I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss AbsoluteI am He, I am He. CANDRASHEKHARA ASHTAKAM

What can Yama (the god of death) do to me who has taken shelter with Shiva? Shiva, Shiva save me. Shiva, Shiva, Shiva protect me. रत्नसानु िरासनं रजतार्द्र िङ् ृ ि तनिेतनं

शिम्ञ्जनीिृत िन्निेश्वर मछयुतानल सायिम ् । क्षक्षिदनद िुरियं त्रिदिालयै रशभवम्न्दतं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ २ ॥ ratnasānu śarāsanaṃ rajatādri śṛṅga niketanaṃ śiñjinīkṛta pannageśvara macyutānala sāyakam | kṣipradagda puratrayaṃ tridaśālayai rabhivanditaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ

Shiva’s bow is decked with gems; his abode is the silvery peaks of the Himalayas; he shoots his great bow producing tremendous sound; he reduced the three cities to ashes instantly and as praised by the three worlds. िञ्ि​िादि िष्ु ि​िन्ध िदाम्िज ु द्वयिोशभतं

फाललोिन जातिावि दनध मन्मध पवग्रहम ् । भस्मर्दनद िलेिरं भवनािनं भव म्ययं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ३ ॥


pañcapādapa puṣpagandha padāmbuja dvayaśobhitaṃ phālalocana jātapāvaka dagdha manmadha vigraham | bhasmadigda kaḷebaraṃ bhavanāśanaṃ bhava mavyayaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ

His lotus feet are decorated with sandal paste and flowers. He burned Manmatha- the god of passion with his third eye; he is smeared with ashes; though he causes the dissolution of the world, yet he is eternal. मत्तवारण मुख्यिमि िृतोत्तरीय मनोहरं

िङ्िजासन िद्मलोिन िम्ू जताङ्तघ्र सरोरुहम ् । दे व शसन्धु तरङ्ि श्रीिर शसक्त िुभ्र जटाधरं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ४ ॥ mattavāraṇa mukhyacarma kṛtottarīya manoharaṃ paṅkajāsana padmalocana pūjitāṅghri saroruham | deva sindhu taraṅga śrīkara sikta śubhra jaṭādharaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ

He subdued the elephant and made an upper garment of its skin. Lotuseyed Shiva is seated on a lotus; his lotus feet are worshipped यक्ष राजसखं भिाक्ष हरं भज ु ङ्ि पवभष ू णम ्

िैलराज सुता िररष्िृत िारुवाम िलेिरम ् । क्षेल नीलिलं िरश्वध धाररणं मि ृ धाररणम ्

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ५ ॥ yakṣa rājasakhaṃ bhagākṣa haraṃ bhujaṅga vibhūṣaṇam śailarāja sutā pariṣkṛta cāruvāma kaḷebaram | kṣeḷa nīlagaḷaṃ paraśvadha dhāriṇaṃ mṛgadhāriṇam candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ


He is the friend of Kubera (good of wealth) and the destroyer of Bhaga’s eyes; he is adorned with serpents; his luster is enhanced by the beautiful daughter of the Himalayas, on his left; his throat is stained blue by poison; his hands hold a deer and an ax. िुण्डलीिृत िुण्डलीश्वर िुण्डलं वष ृ वाहनं

नारदार्द मुनीश्वर स्तुतवैभवं भुवनेश्वरम ् ।

अन्धिान्ति मागश्रतामर िादिं िमनान्तिं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ६ ॥ kuṇḍalīkṛta kuṇḍalīśvara kuṇḍalaṃ vṛṣavāhanaṃ nāradādi munīśvara stutavaibhavaṃ bhuvaneśvaram | andhakāntaka māśritāmara pādapaṃ śamanāntakaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ

Narda and other great sages sing the glories of Shiva, the Lord of the Universe. Coiled serpents are his earrings, the bull his vehicle. He destroyed the wicked Andhaka and saved the heavnly Parijata tree. He is subduing of death. भेषजं भवरोगिणा मणखलािदा मिहाररणं दक्षयज्ञ पवनािनं त्रि​िुणात्मिं त्रिपवलोिनम ् । भम्ु क्त मम्ु क्त फलिदं सिलाघ सङ्घ तनिहिणं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ७ ॥ bheṣajaṃ bhavarogiṇā makhilāpadā mapahāriṇaṃ dakṣayaṅña vināśanaṃ triguṇātmakaṃ trivilocanam | bhukti mukti phalapradaṃ sakalāgha saṅgha nibarhaṇaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ


He cures the worldly and removes all afflictions. He ruined Daksha’s sacrificial rites; Lord of the three gunas, he is the three-eyed one; he fulfills all desires, grants liberation, and removes every sin. भक्तवत्सल मगि​ितं तनगधमक्षयं हररदम्िरं सविभूत िततं िरात्िर मिमेय मनुत्तमम ् ।

सोमवाररन भोहुतािन सोम िाद्यणखलािृततं िन्द्रिेखर एव तस्य ददातत मम्ु क्त मयत्नतः ॥ ८ ॥ bhaktavatsala marcitaṃ nidhimakṣayaṃ haridambaraṃ sarvabhūta patiṃ parātpara maprameya manuttamam | somavārina bhohutāśana soma pādyakhilākṛtiṃ candraśekhara eva tasya dadāti mukti mayatnataḥ

Devotees are dear to Him; he is worshipped as an enexhaustible treasure; he wears a lion skin. He is the Lord of all beings, transcendent, immeasurable, and unequaled; he is the embodiment of earth, fire, water, air and space (the five great elements). पवश्वसम्ृ ष्ट पवधायिं िुनरे विालन तत्िरं

संहरं तमपि ि​िञ्ि मिेषलोि तनवाशसनम ् । क्रीडयन्त महतनि​िं िणनाथ यथ ू समम्न्वतं

िन्द्रिेखरमाश्रये मम किं िररष्यतत वै यमः ॥ ९ ॥ viśvasṛṣṭi vidhāyakaṃ punarevapālana tatparaṃ saṃharaṃ tamapi prapañca maśeṣaloka nivāsinam | krīḍayanta maharniśaṃ gaṇanātha yūtha samanvitaṃ candraśekharamāśraye mama kiṃ kariṣyati vai yamaḥ

He creates, controls and is ever ready to sustain the universe; though the dissolves the universe, yet he eternally dwells within it; together with his attendants he sports day and night.


Mrikanda’s son (Markandeya) who is facing death offers prayer to Shiva; whoever recites this, wherever he is, will never fear death; he will live a long life free of disease and prosper in every way. He will be honored; Shiva will grnt him liberation without his making any effort.


VISHVANATH ASHTAKAM

पवश्वनाथष्टिं ॥

िङ्िा तरङ्ि रमणीय जटा िलािं िौरी तनरन्तर पवभूपषत वाम भािं नारायण पियमनङ्ि मदािहारं

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ १ ॥ gaṅgā taraṅga ramaṇīya jaṭā kalāpaṃ gaurī nirantara vibhūṣita vāma bhāgaṃ nārāyaṇa priyamanaṅga madāpahāraṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares; his locks are enchanted by the ripples of the Ganges; Gauri is ever at His side; he is beloved of Narayana, the destroyer of Manmatha’s pride. वािामिोिरमनेि िण ु स्वरूिं

वािीि पवष्णु सुर सेपवत िाद िद्मं वामेण पवग्रह वरे न िलिवन्तं

वाराणसी िरु िततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ २ ॥ vācāmagocaramaneka guṇa svarūpaṃ vāgīśa viṣṇu sura sevita pāda padmaṃ vāmeṇa vigraha varena kalatravantaṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares; He is beyond speech, the embodiment of virtue; His feet are worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and all gods; His wife Gauri is ever at His side.


भत ू ार्दिं भज ु ि भूषण भपू षताङ्िं

्याघ्राम्ञ्जनां िरधरं , जर्टलं, त्रिनेिं िािाङ्िुिाभय वरिद िूलिाणणं

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ३ ॥ bhūtādipaṃ bhujaga bhūṣaṇa bhūṣitāṅgaṃ vyāghrāñjināṃ baradharaṃ, jaṭilaṃ, trinetraṃ pāśāṅkuśābhaya varaprada śūlapāṇiṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares; He is the controller of elements, adorned by a serpent and wearing a tiger - skin; He is the three eyed one of matted locks; He wields the trident, noose and goad; He offers boons and protection. सीतांिु िोशभत किरीट पवराजमानं िालेक्षणातल पविोपषत िञ्ि​िाणं नािागधिा रगित िासरु िणि िरू ं

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ४ ॥ sītāṃśu śobhita kirīṭa virājamānaṃ bālekṣaṇātala viśoṣita pañcabāṇaṃ nāgādhipā racita bāsura karṇa pūraṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares who wears a crown adorn with the moon, who burnt Manmatha to ashes by shooting fire from His third eye, whose ears are bedecked with the shining rings of the king of serpents.


िञ्िाननं दरु रत मत्त मतङ्िजानां

नािान्तिं धनुज िङ् ु िव िन्नािानां दावानलं मरण िोि जराटवीनां

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ५ ॥ pañcānanaṃ durita matta mataṅgajānāṃ nāgāntakaṃ dhanuja puṅgava pannāgānāṃ dāvānalaṃ maraṇa śoka jarāṭavīnāṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares, the five-faced one. He is the lion who destroys the mad elephant of sin, the Garuda who destroys snake - like demons, the wild fire that burns to ashes the forest of birth. Death and old age. तेजोमयं सिण ु तनिण ुि मद्पवतीयं आनन्द िन्दमिराम्जत मिमेयं

नािात्मिं सिल तनष्िलमात्म रूिं वाराणसी िरु िततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ६ ॥ tejomayaṃ saguṇa nirguṇamadvitīyaṃ ānanda kandamaparājita maprameyaṃ nāgātmakaṃ sakala niṣkaḷamātma rūpaṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares who is glorious, who is both with and without attributes, the One without a second, bliss itself, unconquerable, unknowable, who is both the whole and the parts, the Soul of our souls, the Om.


आिां पवहाय िररहृत्य िरश्य तनन्दां िािे रगथ ं ि सतु नवायि मनस्समाधौ

आधाय हृत ्-िमल मध्य ितं िरे िं

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ७ ॥ āśāṃ vihāya parihṛtya paraśya nindāṃ pāpe rathiṃ ca sunivārya manassamādhau ādhāya hṛt-kamala madhya gataṃ pareśaṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Renounce all desires; do not speak ill of others; give up sinful conduct; turn the mind towards samadhi and meditate on the Supreme Lord seated in the lotus of the heart. Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares. रािागध दोष रर्हतं स्वजनानुरािं

वैरानय िाम्न्त तनलयं गिररजा सहायं माधुयि धैयि सुभिं िरलाशभरामं

वाराणसी िुरिततं भज पवश्वनाधम ् ॥ ८ ॥ rāgādhi doṣa rahitaṃ svajanānurāgaṃ vairāgya śānti nilayaṃ girijā sahāyaṃ mādhurya dhairya subhagaṃ garaḷābhirāmaṃ vārāṇasī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanādham

Worship Vishvanatha, the Lord of Benares who is free from attachments and aversions, who loves His devotees, who is the abode of renunciation and peace. He is companion of Girija, sweet and patient. His throat is stained with poison. वाराणसी िुर िते स्थवनं शिवस्य

्याख्यातम ् अष्टिशमदं िठते मनष्ु य


पवद्यां गश्रयं पविल ु सौख्यमनन्त िीततं

सम्िाप्य दे व तनलये लभते ि मोक्षम ् ॥ ९ ॥ vārāṇasī pura pate sthavanaṃ śivasya vyākhyātam aṣṭakamidaṃ paṭhate manuṣya vidyāṃ śriyaṃ vipula saukhyamananta kīrtiṃ samprāpya deva nilaye labhate ca mokṣam

Whoever chants this hymn of eight stanzas to Shiva, the Lord of Benares, attains in this life learning, prosperity, joy, and eternal fame. After death, he attains liberation. पवश्वनाधाष्टिशमदं िुण्यं यः िठे ः शिव सम्न्नधौ शिवलोिमवाप्नोतत शिवेनसह मोदते ॥ १० ॥

viśvanādhāṣṭakamidaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭheḥ śiva sannidhau śivalokamavāpnoti śivenasaha modate

Whoever chants this hymn of eight stanzas to Lord Shiva in His presence attains His abode and enjoys bliss with Him.


SRI LINGAASHTAKAM

श्री शलङ्िाष्टिं ॥

ब्रनममुरारर सुरागि​ित शलङ्िं

तनमिलभाशसत िोशभत शलङ्िम ् । जन्मज दःु ख पवनाि​ि शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ १ ॥ brahmamurāri surārcita liṅgaṃ nirmalabhāsita śobhita liṅgam | janmaja duḥkha vināśaka liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Linga, which is adored by Brahma, Vishnu and other Gods, which is praised by pure and holy speeches and which destroys the cycle of births and deaths. दे वमतु न िवरागि​ित शलङ्िं

िामदहन िरुणािर शलङ्िम ् । रावण दि​ि पवनािन शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ २ ॥ devamuni pravarārcita liṅgaṃ kāmadahana karuṇākara liṅgam | rāvaṇa darpa vināśana liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga, which is the destroyer of desires, which the Devas and the sages worship, which is infinitely compassionate and which subdued the pride of Raavana.


सवि सि ु न्ध सल ु ेपित शलङ्िं

िद् ु गध पववधिन िारण शलङ्िम ् । शसद्ध सुरासुर वम्न्दत शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ३ ॥ sarva sugandha sulepita liṅgaṃ buddhi vivardhana kāraṇa liṅgam | siddha surāsura vandita liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga, which is lavishly smeared with variegated perfumes and scents, which elevates the power of thought and enkindles the light of discrimination, and before which the Siddhas and Suras and Asuras prostrate. िनि महामणण भपू षत शलङ्िं

फणणितत वेम्ष्टत िोशभत शलङ्िम ् । दक्ष सुयज्ञ तननािन शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ४ ॥ kanaka mahāmaṇi bhūṣita liṅgaṃ phaṇipati veṣṭita śobhita liṅgam | dakṣa suyaṅña nināśana liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga, the destroyer of Dakshas sacrifice, which is decorated with various ornaments, studded with different gems and rubies and which glows with the garland of the serpent Lord coiled around it.


िुङ्िुम िन्दन लेपित शलङ्िं

िङ्िज हार सि ु ोशभत शलङ्िम ् । सम्ञ्ित िाि पवनािन शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ५ ॥ kuṅkuma candana lepita liṅgaṃ paṅkaja hāra suśobhita liṅgam | sañcita pāpa vināśana liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga, which is smeared with saffron and sandal paste, which is decorated with lotus garland and which wipes out all accumulated sins. दे विणागि​ित सेपवत शलङ्िं भावै-भिम्क्तशभरे व ि शलङ्िम ् । र्दनिर िोर्ट िभािर शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ६ ॥ devagaṇārcita sevita liṅgaṃ bhāvai-rbhaktibhireva ca liṅgam | dinakara koṭi prabhākara liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga which is worshipped by the multitude of Gods with genuine thoughts full of faith and devotion and whose splendor is like that of a million suns. अष्टदलोिररवेम्ष्टत शलङ्िं सविसमुद्भव िारण शलङ्िम ् ।


अष्टदररद्र पवनािन शलङ्िं तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ७ ॥ aṣṭadaḷopariveṣṭita liṅgaṃ sarvasamudbhava kāraṇa liṅgam | aṣṭadaridra vināśana liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Shiva Linga, destroyer ofall poverty and misery in its eight aspects, which is the cause of all creation and which stands on the eight petalled Lotus. सुरिुरु सुरवर िूम्जत शलङ्िं

सरु वन िष्ु ि सदागि​ित शलङ्िम ् । िरात्िरं िरमात्मि शलङ्िं

तत ्-िणमाशम सदाशिव शलङ्िम ् ॥ ८ ॥ suraguru suravara pūjita liṅgaṃ suravana puṣpa sadārcita liṅgam | parātparaṃ paramātmaka liṅgaṃ tat-praṇamāmi sadāśiva liṅgam

I bow before that Sada Linga which is the Transcendent Being and the Supreme Self, worshipped by all Suras and their preceptor (Brhaspathi), with innumerable flowers from the celestial gardens. शलङ्िाष्टिशमदं िण् ु यं यः िठे म्श्िव सम्न्नधौ । शिवलोिमवाप्नोतत शिवेन सह मोदते ॥

liṅgāṣṭakamidaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭheśśiva sannidhau | śivalokamavāpnoti śivena saha modate


This Lingashtakam (collection of eight hymns about Linga) is very holy and reciting it in the Sannidhi (in the front of, in the vicinity of) Sri Siva gives punyam, a lot of merit. Even mentally imagining oneself to be near Siva while chanting the Ashtakam gives a lot of benefit. He (who recites the above) attains Siva Loka Kailasa) and enjoys the company of Sri Siva!


SHIVA STOTRAM

शिवस्तोिम ् ॥

ॐ नमः शिवाय॥ तनणखलभुवनजन्मस्थेमभङ्ि​िरोहाः

अिशलतमर्हमानः िम्ल्िता यि तम्स्मन ्। सपु वमलि​िनाभे ईिसंस्थेऽप्यनीिे

मम भवतु भवेऽम्स्मन ् भासुरो भाविन्धः ॥१॥ ||śivastotram|| Om namaḥ śivāya|| nikhila-bhuvana-janma-sthemabhaṅga-prarohāḥ akalita-mahimānaḥ kalpitā yatra tasmin| suvimala-gaganābhe īśasaṁsthe’pyanīśe mama bhavatu bhave’smin bhāsuro bhāvabandhaḥ

May my luminous love fasten firm to Him, to Shiva, In whom arise visions of glories immeasurable! May my luminous love cling to Him who is utterly pure, like the sky, Who is Lord of all, having no lord over Himself! May my luminous devotion be attached to Him By whom all delusion is destroyed, in whom Lordship is forever existent! तनहततनणखलमोहे ऽधीिता यि रूढा ि​िर्टतिरिेम्णा यो महादे वसञ्ज्ञः अशिगथलिरररम्भः िेमरूिस्य यस्य

िणयतत हृर्द पवश्वं ्याजमािं पवभुत्वम ् ॥२॥


nihata-nikhila-mohe’dhīśatā yatra rūḍhā prakaṭita-parapremṇā yo mahādeva-sañjñaḥ aśithila-parirambhaḥ premarūpasya yasya praṇayati hṛdi viśvaṁ vyājamātraṁ vibhutvam

May it be attached to Him who, manifesting surpassing Love, is named “the Great God.” The firm embrace of Him-Love Itself-reveals within the heart the infinity of being, the falseness of the worlds. वहतत पविुलवातः िूवस ि ंस्िाररूिः

िमथतत िलवन्ृ दं घूणणितव े ोशमिमाला। ि​िलतत खलु यनु मं यष्ु मदस्मत्ितीतम ्

अततपविशलतरूिं नौशम गित्तं शिवस्थम ् ॥ ३॥ vahati vipulavātaḥ pūrva-saṁskāra-rūpaḥ pramathati balavṛndaṁ ghūrṇitevormimālā| pracalati khalu yugmaṁ yuṣmad-asmat-pratītam ativikalita-rūpaṁ naumi cittaṁ śivastham

I salute Mind which has its support in Shiva but has lost its pristine perfection and assumed misshapen forms; I salute Mind in which all the impresses of the past are blowing like a furious tempest, Stirring up energies violently, like waters lashed into furious waves; In which flows ceaselessly the dual current of the sense of “I” and “thou.” जनिजतनतभावो वत्त ृ यः संस्िृताश्ि अिणनिहुरूिो यि एिो यथाथिः।

िशमतपविृततवाते यि नान्ति​िर्हश्ि

तमहह हरमीडे गित्तवत्त ृ ेतनिरोधम ्॥ ४॥ janaka-janita-bhāvo vṛttayaḥ saṁskṛtāśca agaṇana-bahurūpo yatra eko yathārthaḥ|


śamita-vikṛtivāte yatra nāntar-bahiśca tamahaha haramīḍe citta-vṛtter-nirodham

I worship Shiva in whom ideas of cause and effect, Thoughts and impresses and countless varied forms become the Real One.I worship Him in whom-when the wind of change is calmed- There is neither within nor without. I worship Him who is the perfect stillness of the Mind. िशलतततशमरमालः िुभ्रतेजःि​िािः

धवलिमलिोभः ज्ञानिञ् ु जाट्टहासः। यशमजनहृर्दिम्यः तनष्िलं ध्यायमानः िणतमवतु मां स मानसो राजहं सः॥ ५॥ galita-timiramālaḥ śubhratejaḥ-prakāśaḥ dhavala-kamalaśobhaḥ jñāna-puñjāṭṭahāsaḥ| yamijana-hṛdigamyaḥ niṣkalaṁ dhyāyamānaḥ praṇatamavatu māṁ sa mānaso rājahaṁsaḥ

He whose thunderous laughter is the flood of Knowledge, He from whom all darkness is dispersed, who manifests as white radiance, who is beautiful as the white lotus; He who is indivisible, who is sought in meditation; He who is realized in the heart of men of self-controlMay He, that Lordly Swan of my mind, protect me! May He protect me, who am bowing before Him! दरु रतदलनदक्षं दक्षजादत्तदोषं

िशलतिशलिलङ्िं िम्रिनलारिान्तम ्। िरर्हतिरणाय िाणपवछिे दसूत्िं

नतनयनतनयुक्तं नीलिण्ठं नमामः॥ ६॥


durita-dalana-dakṣaṁ dakṣajā-dattadoṣaṁ kalitakalikalaṅkaṁ kamrakahlārakāntam| parahita-karaṇāya prāṇavicchedasūtkaṁ natanayananiyuktaṁ nīlakaṇṭhaṁ namāmaḥ

Him, who destroys sin and removes the dark stain of our age; Whose benign eyes watch over all who have surrendered to Him; Who joyously sacrifices Himself for the good of others, Whose throat is blue from drinking the poison intended for others- Him, lustrous as the white-water lilyHim I salute!
