is semester has been…something so far, that’s for sure. To say there has been a lot happening at Stetson would be an understatement, and all of this has been going on while we have been trying to situate ourselves into this new academic year. ere are lots of new roles, things, and people with Hatter Network this year, and things like Hurricane Ian continue to try and get in the way.

I don’t know about you all, but this hurricane was not very kind to many people. My childhood home has sustained some pricey damage, my friends and loved ones in N. Fort Myers did not fare much better, and some in Volusia County are still without power. All of these things considered, e Reporter sta was still able to come together, and produce this beautiful issue for you all. ere are some awesome pieces in this that I have been anxiously awaiting the release of, and our Creative Team worked tirelessly to give the publication a makeover, a fresh start. is issue is something to be proud of, and I hope all its contributors are as proud of their work as I am proud of them. is was no easy feat, and still we have this issue to share with you all.

ank you for your support while Hatter Network navigates this new chapter, thank you for leaving room for us to gure things out, as students and as creators, and thank you for picking up this issue. Happy reading, and we hope to see you again in Issue 2!

is issue felt like a divergence from the ordinary for our sta in more ways than one. With the introduction of new content came the creation of a new logo, title font, and overall design to t the theme of internet usage. We found this topic to be quite relevant in the age of social media and the emergence of infamous trolls such as Andrew Tate. As we sat in our sta meeting, Tate’s content was brought up, and what began as a rag on him, turned into full- edged dive into the world of the Incel subculture complete with interviews from Stetson sta . From here we plotted our design, ultimately landing upon a dark cyber aesthetic. It brings me joy to see how hour-long sta meetings turned into a magazine lled with fantastic articles including topics such as local co ee shops, nature on campus, the ban of Celsius in sports, and news about Stetson’s housing crisis. Working alongside our wondrous team has made this issue into a favorite of mine, which I relish to touch and behold as a printed copy. I hope you enjoy what we’ve produced, and I encourage all readers to keep an open mind as you embark on this literary journey with us. ank you for your support—happy reading!

is has been an interesting semester to say the least. From ongoing global concerns, to the recent brutalization of our beautiful state by hurricane Ian, the Stetson community has had to endure some very stressful events. We at the Reporter are right there with you, dear readers. We stress and stock-up and toil too, and through it all, we remain ever dedicated in our pursuit of providing our beloved community with great journalism. In this edition, we’ve compiled everything from where to go to decompress with nature to where to grab your next ca eine x. We’ve also tackled some more serious questions, like what happened to Chaudoin Hall, and what the heck is going on with Andrew Tate and his minions online? In doing so, we hope to pursue answers that this community of students, here and now, would care to know.

is is a bit of a Renaissance period within the Reporter, as we are altering the structure of internal operations, strengthening our interdepartmental communication and collaboration e orts, and even making changes to aesthetics and branding. It has been a large undertaking, but the fruits of our labor have been some of the most rewarding moments of my Stetson experience. We hope you’ll join us on our journey. We hope that our e orts might add something meaningful to our community. Know that you inspire us every day, dear readers, and thank you for reading!

The Rise of the Incel Subculture

With great power comes great responsibility, and that phrase rings true in the age of the internet.

The creation of social media apps such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram has paved golden paths of Paul, amongst many others. While their yellow brick roads led to the aspirations they hoped for, it’s important to recognize that not all that glitters is gold.

Just as the World Wide Web gives way to fame, it is also a breeding ground for infamy. One infamous of women. His imbecilic rants encouraging toxic masculinity and discussions about supposed women’s lack of coherency garner millions of views from all sorts of crowds, whether that be haters, admirers, or sympathizers. Many instances of hateful acts perpetrated by self-identifying Incels have occurred throughout history, one of the most notable being the mass distaste for women and conventionally attractive partner. The detestation for others became so strong that he posted a manifesto on his YouTube shortly before enacting his darkest thoughts. Fear thus circulated around the Incel community once this mass act of violence took place, and soon after, the infamy if you will. This then provides an understanding as to why more men perpetrate acts of violence within the subculture, given that women internalize these ideologies, while men externalize them. Profoundly, Dr. Dickey says that the ways in which men externalize their frustrations is why we see lem; it’s not a me problem. It is that the world is changing and it should go back to the good old where men were expected to lead the family, women stayed home, and patriarchy ran rampant. e Incel subculture is, at surface level, a very non-intimidating community, but I encourage you all to be weary of those who objectify women. at mentality hinders social progress, and it’s doubtful that we can come even close to a peaceful society with that mindset running rampant amongst internet-users. If we really champion equality, then this ideology directly inhibits that and it indirectly encourages violence towards a marginalized community. It thus brings into question how we can eradicate the subculture and other harmful, misogynistic teachings it spreads. Some experts believe that this is a genuine possibility, and o er some working theories to resolve it.

“First we have to recognise that that's what Incel culture is about, is about hating women. And then once we make that recognition that Incel culture is about hating women, about putting them in their place…once we recognise those dynamics, we can talk more openly, we can push back, we can expose the rhetoric and show people why it's harmful,” said Dr. Hall.

Just like with any widespread issue, the rst step to erasing it is recognizing it. “You can't have an awareness campaign without understanding something,” said Dr. Hall. No problem can be xed if it isn’t identi ed as a problem at the start.

I encourage you all to be careful when browsing the internet. Harmful subcultures, online communities, and hate groups thrive on willful ignorance, and that can stop with you if you choose to make yourself knowledgeable about societal issues. e internet, similarly to the Incel subculture, is like an iceberg: little is known super cially, but once you dive beneath the surface, there’s more to discover. ere’s no shortage of negativity online, but you don’t have to contribute. ere’s no greater strength than knowledge, and I encourage you all to use yours wisely.

“First we have to recognise that that’s what about hating women. we make the recognition that Incel cutlure is about hating women, about putting them in their place recognize those dynamics, we can talk more openly expose the rhetoric and show people

Healing Power of

Nature

August 2021. My world was falling apart. The school environment was excruciatingly demanding at times and so was keeping up with friends, especially on the days when I needed time and space to ed by people I did not want to see and was constantly reminded of the schoolwork that was piling up on my desk? There wasn’t much I could do at that moment, and yet something called to me; a place ture. I decided that instead of going to my dorm, I would go outside little space since it wasn’t a common area for visitors.

I lived in Emily Hall, and for those who don’t know, Emily has a top of that staircase there sits archaic, white swinging chairs that will probably leave a deep splinter with a single touch. To be frank, the swings are not white. The color has faded so much that they have a tint of brown, and the chains that allow them to swing are rusted and ragged, though surprisingly strong for their condition. Nonetheless, being able to sit on those swings, observe the monstrous overhanging trees and absorb the silence has been absolutely worth the numerous ing anxious thoughts that consumed me.

We, as students and growing adults, tend to take for granted what we have. When we have something so amazing, so great, we decide it is easier to overlook it rather than take a moment to appreciate it. To perfect for taking nature walks and trips. There are springs, nature animals more majestic than those that can be found on campus.

Now you may read this and think “I am not a nature person,” which is fair. I am aware of my bias. However, when you’re feeling down, when you feel like the whole world is falling apart—as I did

that autumn day—consider nature, go outside and see that the world is not actually falling apart at that moment. Nature will remain the same even when you, yourself, are changing on the inside and outside, and see that the world is not actually falling apart at that moment. Nature will remain the same even when you, yourself, are changing on the inside and outside, and that can be incredibly com forting. Have you ever sat down and just observed the trees leisurely swaying in the wind, the birds gracefully singing to one another, and the clouds gradually passing by? Well, why not give it a try one day? Go outside, observe, and take a deep breath of fresh air. I’ll bet your body will be more relaxed, and you’ll feel a strong sense of

It’s a great spot to get away from campus for some fresh air and recreational fun!

The summer before the Fall 2022 semester seemed to be promising. With virtually no COVID-19 restrictions for the rst time in three years, the academic year was foreshadowed to nally have some semblance of normality. However, if things appear too good to be true, they o en are. As Stetson University began to leave one disaster behind, another one struck: Chaudoin was e ectively out of commission for this academic year, leading to what can only be described as a housing crisis.

All reassignments will be released by the end of July.” Additionally, the post informed the public that Risk Management had hired an inspector and Facilities Management had hired a company for air and surface testing.

e o cial plan going forward was to take advantage of the dormitory closure to complete an HVAC service and sprinkler system installation originally scheduled for the summer of 2023. As for Chaudoin residents, the idea was to keep the community together as much as possible. To do so, the school stated in the original email that the approximately 150 female-identifying students assigned to the main and north wings would be reassigned to Smith

Hat Rack Feedback: The Evolution of Dining Services

After last year’s surveys from students complaining about the off-brand Chipotle-style food at BYOB, dining services came up with a new method of serving food. This idea sparked conversation even before the survey results came out when dining staff noticed a drop in transactions at BYOB, and they caught word of student’s desire for more variety.

As of last spring, Stetson Dining was in the process of getting rid of BYOB and replacing it with Hatter StrEats, the new dining service located in the Hat Rack at the Carlton Union Building. The new food service features a combination of cuisines with a rotating “food truck” style menu.

According to cashier Kiara Gomez, staff members come up with “new concepts” so students never get tired of having thes ame food. Senior Director of Dining, Candra Reed, explains that the thought process behind the concept of Hatter StrEats was to have something that would change periodically and provide a variety of foods students want. The food is not supposed to stay the same but rather changes from time to time over the course of the semester.

There are a lot of different components that go into changing a food concept. It is not just the student’s input: it is the cost, the environment that the university is currently in, as well as thinking of the sustainability initiative on Stetson’s campus. Although when asked what the budgeting process is like for dining, not much information was given.

"The goal for us right now is to do twice a semester. Coming up here soon, we're going to change it to a pasta concept, and then we're going to then put out a vote for students to get their thought process and ideas of what they want to see in the spring."

Candra Reed, Senior Director of Dining

Many returning students came onto campus blindsided by the sudden change of food. For example, Jazlyn Garcia (‘23) was looking forward to her regular bowl order containing brown rice and ground beef. She explains she didn’t even hear of BYOB leaving or of a survey to get rid of it until she arrived this fall. “I walked up to the cash register looking forward to BYOB and they said, ‘Hi this is Hatter StrEats.’ I was pissed,” Garcia said. “They explained the options to me, and I ordered chicken with brown rice and teriyaki sauce. I thought it a few times, it’s just okay.”

Other students like Grace Cliffton (‘23) were thrilled to see BYOB gone. As a vegetarian and self-proclaimed picky eater, she now has the option of adding tofu to her order and describes the taste to be “fresher” than the CUB food due to the fact that the order is prepared right after you place it. When asked if there was anything she’d change here’s what she said: “I complain a lot about dining. And it tastes a little too much like CUB food. I think they need to get more experienced people or have better training in how to cook certain foods. Like tofu, they don’t really know how to cook that stuff, technically I’m getting the protein I need but it’s not good.”

22 the reporter

Another complaint, or rather suggestion, from both Garcia and Clifton is they would prefer a fast-food restaurant chain. Back in 2019, Stetson offered Johnny Rockets, a restaurant franchise that serves burgers and fries. According to Reed, a problem that arises with franchises is being tied to a contract.

create an environment that could periodically change, so it wasn’t a stagnant thing,” Reed explained. “That’s one of the big reasons why it’s not another national brand because when you have a national brand, you’re booked into a contract or you’re stuck for

making, you have to pick what they are making.”

Reed elaborated that the participation rate for Johnny Rockets at the time was dropping, but Stetson needed to carry out the contract that they committed to with the restaurant. Another problem with these restaurant chains surfaces when many students have strict dietary needs and preferences.

"We have such a large vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free population on campus so we want to make sure we always have options that appease those populations. For instance, Einsteins is a location everybody loves but for someone who has a gluten allergy, that's not somewhere they can eat."

Candra Reed, Senior Director of Dining

Ensuring that the entire campus is included in food decision making is a key goal for dining. Although there are surveys offered by dining, and according to Reed it seems students take them, although it seems that many students don’t take them or even know

“I didn’t know [about Hatter StrEats] until I came back for the semester,” Clifton said. “There may have been a survey but I don’t surveys.”

All in all, Hatter StrEats doesn’t plan on going anywhere. The name will stay the same but the concepts and theme of food they offer will continue to change. Surveys related to dining are sent out yearly and feedback boxes are located in the entrance of the CUB.

With all that being said, dining services have many events planned for the rest of the year.

“This year we are trying to do a lot more things, bringing back our pre-covid vibes of course,” Reed said. “The past two years we haven’t been able to do the events we love doing and we like to see you guys enjoying it. Our goal this year is to bring those back and we do have some things in the works to create some excitement.”

CELSIUS: WHAT ARE YOU REALLY DRINKING?
Story by Eleanor King Layout and Graphics by Mia Hawkins and Hayden Collins
CELSIUS ENERGY DRINKS ARE TAKING OVER COLLEGE CAMPUSES. CONTAINING 200 MG OF CAFFEINE AND ADVERTISED AS A “HEALTHIER” OPTION, IT IS NO WONDER THE DRINK HAS BECOME A STUDENT’S BEST FRIEND. HOWEVER, INGREDIENTS IN THIS INCREASINGLY POPULAR DRINK ARE BECOMING A CONCERN FOR COLLEGIATE ATHLETES.

WHAT IS CELSIUS?

ated options. The main ingredients include a mixture of caffeine, guarana extract, taurine, green tea, ginger extract, and several vitamins. While many may assume caffeine levels would be the problematic factor for athletes, guarana extract is the component placing Celsius on the 2022-23 NCAA list of banned substances.

WHAT IS GURANA EXTRACT?

Guarana is a fruit-bearing plant native to the Amazon Basin. Guarana extract is formed when the seeds are processed into an antioxidant-rich powder, creating a caffeine additive commonly found in energy drinks. According to Healthline, studies show the extract can boost overall energy levels, reduce fatigue, and have pain-relieving qualities.

WHAT HAPPENS IF AN NCAA ATHELTE DRINKS CELCIUS?

According to the 2022-23 list of NCAA Banned Substances, guarana extract is categorized as a stimulant. If an athlete is summoned for a drug test and any trace of stimulants are found in their results, they are subject to loss of eligibility. A common assumption is that the consumption of Celsius is safe, as long as athletes do not ingest more than the NCAA approved caffeine levels below 500 mg in test results. However, there are no exceptions for the guarana additive.

Madison Jump, a third-year on the Stetson softball team, describes a sense of confusion surrounding the ban amongst student athletes.

“We were not aware that the drink was banned, we kind-of just found out through word of mouth. Given that it is such a popular energy drink, we still don’t fully understand why it is banned and the specifics behind the ingredient that could cause us to fail a drug test”

Institutions are required to educate student athletes about NCAA banned substances and products that may contain them. However, the novelty behind the use of Celsius in athletics and the recent boom in popularity has created a disconnect between updated compliance rules and student athlete awareness. If an athlete introduces any new product in their daily routine, it is vital they communicate with their athletic trainers to determine if the ingredients align with NCAA regulations.

While, sure, the historical accuracy isn’t exactly perfect here, the soundtrack is so good you’ll forget to care. is one’s got a bit of something for everyone, so it’s great for those just beginning their descent into the realm of musicals. Want a romance arc, an underdog to root for, a touch of social commentary, a pinch of family drama, or just an all-out smashingly stunning set of performances? is one’s for you!

Hamilton

We get it, the hype is real with this one, but we promise it’s there for a reason. is is a great pick for all you show tunes haters because this soundtrack is packed with Rap and R&B, rather than merely one heartfelt ballot a er the next. is fresh take on tradition livens up a play about a historical gure that most wouldn’t know or care about otherwise. Give it a shot, and you’ll be surprised, we swear.

Spilling the Beans:

A Spotlight on the Best Coffee In Deland

My coffee journey started when I was at my grand mother’s house. She was babysitting me at the time, and every morning, while I ate my eggs and drank a glass of orange juice, she would have a hot cup of coffee. Her morning coffee was very intriguing to ten-year-old me. For years, I have wanted to try it, and on one magical day, my grandmother asked if I would like a sip. I excitedly said yes and have been hooked ever since.

The rich, creamy, and warm tastes of that fresh coffee was unlike any other beverage I have had, and the energizing component of its caffeine was also a nice touch. Now that I am an adult in college, my day does not start until I have my coffee. That is why, when I moved to DeLand, it was

searching high and low during my time as a local, here are

Trilogy Coffee Roasting Co:

I Trilogy Coffee Roasting Co. If you want to get some work done and are tired of sitting in your dorm or the library, come to Trilogy, get a drink, and get down to work! The vibe there is laid back and relaxing, making for a great envi ronment to be productive. The coffee is also very good! It’s super fresh and gives me the perfect boost to get work done.

If you are very particular about your coffee and enjoy some thing that tastes freshly brewed and sophisticated, this is the place for you. My usual order is a cold brew with cream and stevia, but I also recommend their iced teas. Trilogy’s Coffee is also served in other restaurants in DeLand such as Urban Brick, a pizza place, and Bakechop, a scratch kitchen with a variety of food options.

Boston Coffee House:

LBoston Coffee House is a quaint spot that serves sand wiches, salads, pastries, breakfast, and a delicious variety of coffees. During my freshman year, Boston Coffee was like a second home to me. It has a very comfortable atmosphere and I have great memories of sitting on the couches in the back room and enjoying beverages along side my friends. However, if you are not a coffee fan, Boston Coffee House has plenty of other drink options for you, including chai tea, smoothies, and hot cocoa!

They also serve freshly brewed tea. My go-to coffee order is the Yankee Doodle, which is espresso, steamed milk, chocolate, caramel and hazelnut with whipped cream. You can order any of their coffees hot or frozen to

a sugar-free option for those interested. Their food is also a delight; my favorites include the Chicken Pesto Melt, the Mixed Mozzarella Salad, and the Panini Mozzarella Melt (my all-time favorite). This is a place I always take family and friends who are visiting me since the interior is so cozy. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a similar experience.

The Table:

One of the biggest and most popular spots in Deland is The paintings on the doors and windows. The Table is known for its bottomless brunch, on Saturday’s and Sunday’s and their dinner foods they serve during the week. However, their gift shop the table offers a variety of coffee beverag es! Their house beverages include “Dirty-Chai”, Cookies + Cream (espresso, dark chocolate, vainilla,), Honey Cream Latte, and Raspberry Mocha. The Table’s coffee bar is open try something new.

Bonus! Places That Aren’t Coffee Shops but Serve Coffee:

Whits:

This frozen custard shop offers espresso, americanos, and affogato which is frozen custard with espresso poured over! I tried an americano and really enjoyed it! It was not too bitter they don’t offer as wide of a variety compared to the other places I mentioned, but I see this as a quality over quantity situation, the coffee they serve is absolutely decadent and pairs excellent with the sweet custard they serve. They also serve a cream! If you love frozen dessert and coffee this is the sweet spot for you!

Deland Bagel:

Bagels and Coffee are one of my favorite pairings; nothing beats sipping on a cup of coffee while snacking on a freshly made bagel. Deland Bagel is a newer restaurant that opened in 2021 and brings homemade New York City style bagels to cafe latte, cappuccino, mocha, machiato, and americano, (all of which can be served iced or warm). They also offer Hot Coffee that is available in breakfast blend or dark roast, and there is a decaf option for hot coffee for those so inclined. My go-to is an iced mocha since it’s both delectable and refreshing, and it goes well with an everything bagel. If you want a quick disappoint!

Mr. Bill’s Donuts: L

focus on donuts. Like bagels, donuts also pair wonderfully with a nice cup of coffee. Mr. Bill’s coffee offering only consists iced coffee is perfect for a hot day here in Florida. They also offer a variety of non-donut food options such as sandwiches, burgers, salads, and baked goods. Simple and sweet Mr. Bill’s

There is no shortage of coffee spots in Deland, evident by the fact that all of the places I listed are within walking distance from campus. No matter which place you decide to stop at, you will leave with a great cup of coffee that will energize and delight you. If you need some extra fuel while you study or just want something to sip on while exploring down town Deland, these places are worth checking out.
