‘Great start’ celebrated By Enzo Raimondo, CEO REIV
First home buyer assistance WHEN the current First Home Owner Grant was introduced to compensate buyers for the impact of the GST in 2000, it was set at $7,000 – and at that time the median price of a house was $222,500. In the past decade the median price has more than doubled to $540,500, yet the grant has remained at $7,000. Over that time the Victorian State Government has created an additional scheme, the First Home Bonus, and that is currently between $2,000 and $11,000, depending on the type and location of the home. As a rule they provide higher assistance for new homes and even higher assistance for new homes in regional Victoria. The Federal Government also introduced the First Home Owner Boost to help first home buyers during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). These schemes saw the proportion of loans given to first home buyers increase by 50 per cent and it ensured that house prices in the more affordable segment of the market did not record any substantial falls during the GFC. Now that the boost has ceased and the State Government has provided no funding for the bonus to continue past June 30 this year, it is timely and sensible to reassess the assistance provided to first home buyers. The REIV has asked the State Government to review first home owner assistance as part of the budget for the next financial year. The review should consider replacing the different forms of assistance with either a doubling of the grant of $14,000 to ensure it maintains the value set in 2000, or replacing the grant and bonus with a total exemption from stamp duty.
BARRY Plant in Torquay celebrated its second birthday recently – toasting a “great start” to business. Owners Glenn and Kylie Hardman and the team have worked extremely hard over the last 24 months, putting the new business on the map. “It’s been just fantastic.
