The rain stopped months ago, the earth has a summer crust and the area has come alive with hordes of holidaymakers making the most of the toasty coast. With the people of summer comes festivals, and for Drysdale it’s the Festival of Glass that will inject life into the town on February 17. We chat with organiser Doug Carson and exhibitors Mark Edwards and David Hobday to see what it is that makes the festival – and the medium – so special. The prevailing south south-easterly airflow has kept most days pleasant this summer but a pattern of warm Thursdays has ensured the coast has run hot, too. With this in mind, we have advice on how to stay cool during the warm weather and conserve energy by minimising the use of air conditioners and energy-saving pool and spa pumps. Sunny days have meant no let up in the building industry, and we chat to Cavalier Homes’ owners Rob and Lisa Clarke about
their own renovation project, which has resulted in a superb family home on a Bells Beach property. A five year renovation pays off at this Bells Beach family home. Being exposed to hundreds of design ideas as the owners and operators of Cavalier Homes West Coast, Rob and Lisa Clarke knew exactly what they wanted to achieve with the renovation of their Bells Beach home. The couple and their four children – Nic, 17, Caitlin, 15, Tom, 14 and Daniel, 10 – wanted a place to come together as well as room to relax alone. They needed somewhere to entertain up to 80 guests and enough space for their menagerie of horses, chickens, a parrot and much-loved dog Lennie. The original 12 square house on their five acre block was the second residence ever built between Anglesea and Torquay, and is now a sprawling five bedroom, two bathroom family retreat, complete with a basketball half-court, half-pipe, separate kids retreat and sweeping bush views. 8

“It’s crazy busy in here, everyone is so active with footy, cricket, surfing, basketball, netball, skateboarding, horse riding and karate – it’s a mad house but we like it, it works for us,” Lisa said. It’s a boisterous and bustling house full of lively personalities and the Clarkes have succeeded in creating a hard-wearing and robust space without compromising on quality or style. The family spend most of their time at home congregating in the open kitchen, living and dining area, which is framed by a hand-cut, recycled bluestone wall. Lisa said installing the wall has been a labour of love, with only half a square metre laid per day but now most of the family credit it as their favourite part of the home – except Daniel, whose favourite thing about the renovation is not having to sharing a room with Tom any more.
Oversized Caesarstone bench tops and a huge pantry maintain practicality in the kitchen, but it’s the unencumbered view of the horses and bush and the Esse wood stove that take centre stage. The house can’t be connected to mains gas, so Rob and Lisa had to get creative when it came to their oven and cooktop. Upon finding the wood stove they knew it would be functionally and aesthetically perfect for them, and it has already proven its worth by not only cooking the perfect Christmas roast for 16 guests, but also providing hot water for the hydronic heating system. The house is centred on a giant, outdoor entertainment area, decked with the same Blackbutt hardwood flooring that is throughout the house, continuing the flow from indoors to outdoors seamlessly. coastal lifestyle and several living areas provide access to the deck, and Lisa said it was important for them to have an outdoor space that felt as much a part of their home as the house itself. They have used colours to further merge the house with its surrounding landscape, choosing a natural interior colour palette and a grey-blue exterior paint to match the bluestone features indoors and the blue gums they have planted in the garden. Although the family only moved into the house officially in December, once the deck was complete they wasted no time enjoying it, with Rob throwing up a marquee to mask the construction and hosting a 40th, a 70th and a wedding. As a qualified builder, Rob was directly involved with most phases of the renovation, working in conjunction with local tradesmen who he said they couldn’t thank enough for the hard work and extra hours they put in. This is the second renovation by the

Clarkes. While they were happy to take the process quite slowly, after five years working on the house and living in what is now the guest house, Lisa said the time had come to complete the project and move in. “All the kids were getting injured playing sport and two of them were on crutches and finding it really hard to get around, I just said ‘alright, let’s just do this and get it done’,” Lisa said. “It can be tough at times but during renovations you get to live in the house which gives you a good feel for the place and what is working, what’s not and what changes need to be made.” Once the final finishing touches are put on the project that’s dominated their spare time for over half a decade, Rob said he’s not quite sure what the pair will do with themselves. “I really have no idea – what do people that have finished houses do on weekends?”

Coffee tables need a lot of thought. Once it was quite acceptable to place a rectangular coffee table in the centre of the room like a roundabout, pop a single vase in the centre and maybe some flowers. Growing up in the UK, at a young age I wondered why the coffee table was always way out of reach when sitting on the sofa – and we always drank English breakfast tea, as coffee was something Americans drank.
Why did we call it a coffee table? Obviously it wasn’t a decision by the English or the Chinese because we would be calling it the “tea table”. Fortunately, we have progressed. Now there are endless possibilities. I like to think outside the square when it comes to coffee tables. I find it far more practical to have a grouping of smaller tables. This means every guest will have a spot to place their “coffee”. It also gives you a perfect opportunity to add interest to the room, to mix things up, textures and colours, heights and shapes. For those of you who prefer to have a large coffee table as a focal piece to display interesting accessories, consider two smaller identical coffee tables side by side; repetition creates style. Accessorise with
books and special objects. Use accessories of varying height and scale, this will provide visual interest, but remember accessories on a coffee table need to look great from any angle. Accessories arranged in a decorative tray can easily be moved to use the coffee table in different way. There are many materials available. Timber creates a warm feel, colourful wire shouts relaxed and fun, marble and glass add a more sophisticated feeling. But for me at the moment, for function and style it’s groupings of small tables, the old nest of tables re-designed, unusual shapes and mix-matched colours. When you’re tired of them in the living room, they are perfect in a bedroom or even the bathroom.

Summer’s hot weather has arrived and here are some tips to have a more comfortable home and yet reduce your power bills. If you don’t already have insulation in your ceiling, make it a priority. It is relatively cheap and provides significant benefits. An insulated home can be 5-10 degrees cooler and homes in the Surf Coast should have at least R3 insulation in the ceiling. Shading windows from the hot summer sun is important. External blinds can reduce heat gain through windows by as much as 75 per cent. Shade cloth or other forms of shading across a window will be effective.

Adjectives for glass and water describe each other, each a metaphor for the other – clear, cloudy, shiny, dark, pellucid, vitreous, translucent, diaphanous, turbid, glassy. Every coastal town has a festival, and perhaps the success of Drysdale’s Festival of Glass can be attributed to the fact that the slightly inland town – as far as “inland” can be used to describe any place on the Bellarine – claims the coast through this solid, liquid medium. coastal festival Point Lonsdale glass artist David Hobday will be exhibiting at the festival, and his pieces explicitly acknowledge this connection. The former fisheries researcher, who spent 30 years working at the labs in Queenscliff, now devotes himself full-time to producing pieces that reflect aspects of the coast and ocean. “I snorkel a lot and walk along the beach every morning,� he said. “Glass is a great medium to express the marine environment.� At the moment he’s working on thick blocks
of glass embedded with shells and other miscellany from the sea, and shaping the blocks to create bubbles within them to further capture the underwater world. “Lots of people work not to have bubbles in their glass but I’m working hard the other way.� The fusion of glass and water has another corollary in the shifting tidal line where water and sand merge. “It’s the silica in sand that is the main component in glass. You see how it’s all connected.�
Hobday walks this tidal path every morning, the glass beneath his feet, collecting shells to use in his most recent project. “The shells I pick up on my walk in the morning, but for fish I make moulds from fish bought in the fish shop.� Local business Wathaurong Glass is also exhibiting at the festival. The business name acknowledges the connection between water and glass – the Wathaurong tribe that inhabited the Bellarine and Surf Coast region prior to white settlement

coastal festival were known as “the water people”. Wathaurong Glass owner Mark Edwards attributes the popularity of the festival – now in its third year – to the “ohhh factor” people experience when they arrive. “The festival is going from strength to strength. I’ve got to take my hat off to Doug Carson, who came up with the idea – he and the committee have done fantastically well. “The Festival of Glass beings people from all around the peninsula and even the state. “It’s something that every coastal town has – a festival – and Drysdale needed something like that. It’s given Drysdale life. “There’s gathering interest in the festival and in years to come I’ve no doubt that if the festival continues to grow there’s the potential for someone to have a glass shop in Drysdale.” Last year, hundreds attended the festival and Edwards attributed its perhaps surprising popularity with glass’s versatility as a medium. “You can do so much with glass. It’s so
versatile as a medium. “Everyone walks into a house and doesn’t really take notice of the windows and doors but when people get to the festival they go ‘ohhh’ when they see all the different things it can be used for. “It’s got a whole lot of that ‘ohhh’ factor where people say ‘I didn’t realise it could be used that way’.” Wathaurong Glass will be displaying glass art including bowls, platters and art panels as well as setting up a kitchen display with a bench top, cupboards and splashback. “Our glass art is based around local Aboriginal motifs of wind, fire, rain, waterholes. “Simple images of circles, crosses and lines show peoples’ journeys and travels and can tell peoples’ lives and stories. “We also do sea themes if people don’t necessarily want culture on their glass. We’re a commercial business so when we find something that works, we fine tune it.”
Festival of Glass committee chairperson Doug Carson, who began the festival with the Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association, said he didn’t know much about glass when he first tabled the idea a few years ago. “I didn’t know much at all about it, I know you can drink out of it and watch windscreen wipers go up and down on it. It’s been a good challenge to get it up and running. “When we first came up with the idea we put the feelers out and found that glass had a big influence on the Bellarine with lots of little ideas, artists and businesses.”

Carson said this year’s festival had a good range of entries among the more than 60 demonstrations, exhibitions and competitions, including a raffle with $1,800 worth of items up for grabs. “We’ve got about eight new exhibitors coming in. There’s a lady who will demonstrate how to make glass beads in a microwave oven. Most people need a kiln but this lady has developed a new approach. “I’m very excited about that and we have several other people coming in to do bead lighting and other demonstrations.” Carson said that not really knowing anything about glass had helped in making the festival expansive. “Not knowing anything means I don’t have any favourites to pick and choose from, so if it’s anything to do with glass, we do it. It’s
not just about art and jewellery; it’s about everything to do with glass.” The uses for glass are seemingly neverending and Carson has an eye on the future. “In 10 years you’ll be watching your speedo in the windscreen. There’s so much futuristic technology out there that’s not readily available. “It would be great to attract exhibitions on those uses of glass in coming years.” The Drysdale Festival of Glass is on Sunday February 17 between 10am-4pm at the Bellarine Sports Centre in Drysdale. On Saturday February 16 at 6.30pm, a dinner, bottleneck slide guitar performance and glass art auction will be held at Harvester Moon Café. Most of us like to indulge in a little relaxation time on the sofa every week, whether it’s putting our feet up after a long day at work, or taking some time out to watch the evening news with the family. Chris Williams of insideout in Geelong said that for a piece of furniture that is used so often, it’s surprising how many people complain that theirs isn’t right. “We find that a lot of people come into our store, slightly overwhelmed with the number
of sofa options available out there. They often need some pointers to help them focus on what will really suit their décor, as well as their lifestyle. “This is why we developed a list (see below) of pointers for buying the perfect sofa.”
1. Firstly,
you need to measure up your space and think about the size you’d like. Consider the proportions of your room and be careful not to over or under fill the space. Take measurements of the room and the proposed sofa size.
2. Secondly,
think about the style of sofa you’d like. Do you want a two seater, three seater, four seater, left chaise, right chaise, modular, ottoman, single chair? Consider the features you like, including back height, arm width, seat depth and cushion style – many of these elements can be customised to suit your needs!
3. Next you need to consider how you’ll use the sofa. Think about the style of your room – is it formal, informal or for family use? Take note of your seating habits too! Are you a “lounger” or do you like to put your feet up? How many people need to sit, and are they elderly or young children?
4. Now for the fun part – the design! Consider what type of cushions you like – soft, medium or firm. Is there a particular type of fabric that you like, and what colours, patterns and textures work into your current and future décor plans. Also think about the finishes, such as feet – do you prefer metal or timber, or none at all?
5. The final consideration is budget. Are you looking to invest in a high quality, custom made sofa, or is it a lounge to tide you over until the kids move out? Do you want a 10 year structural guarantee and Australian Made Quality? Can you afford the lounge of your dreams right away, or would you prefer to pay it off gradually? 18

For larger pools, multiple spa jets, water features or in floor cleaning systems, AstralPool have developed the Viron P600 eVo, a larger capacity pump with an impressive 600 litres per minute flow rate. Thermal dryer The largest biosolids drying plant in the Southern Hemisphere officially opened on the Bellarine last month, creating a sustainable solution for sewage by-products. The thermal drying facility provides an environmentally friendly answer for managing waste by-products by converting biosolids – a by-product of the sewerage treatment process – into nutrient-rich farm fertiliser. The project has been a huge undertaking with initial investigations into the project beginning 13 years ago. The $77 million plant was opened at the Black Rock water reclamation plant by the Minister for Water Peter Walsh and Barwon Water chairman Dr Michael King who said the facility adds considerable value to the environmental precinct. The need for the plant was established as the production of recycled water at Black Rock created a large volume of wet biosolids, yet there was not a sustainable system for drying and recycling in place. The on-site drying facility at Black Rock allows biosolids to be efficiently dried for reuse, and has eliminated the need to transport them to a Werribee treatment plant for air drying, saving time and transport costs.
“This new facility closes the loop in the sewage treatment process. Sewage can no longer be seen as waste,” Dr King said. Mr Walsh said the day was significant for Barwon Water in their quest to reduce environmental impact during the waste treatment process. “The completion of this project is an important step in Barwon Water’s long-term goal to have ‘no waste’ sewerage systems where 100 per cent of recycled water and biosolids are committed to sustainable use.” The fully enclosed plant will treat up to 60,000 tonnes of waste annually and has been designed according to community expectations that it omit no odour beyond Barwon Water’s fence, and be aesthetically sympathetic with the coastal landscape. The plant has created 12 jobs for the region and will be operated by Plenary Environment as a public-private partnership. Since opening its doors to the public in November 2012, Villawood Properties’ brand new Armstrong development in Mt Duneed has blitzed the market. In what will be the most significant masterplanned community Geelong has seen, the wait for premium resort-style living is over. Land went on sale in late November 2012 and buyers camped on site for up to four days to secure their preferred lot. I’ve just finished Mick Jagger’s biography (by Philip Norman). I read Keith Richards’ biography before that, so it was interesting to compare the two. I think there was a little bit of creative tension going on. I’m obsessed with Michael Connelly, I’m a big fan of crime fiction. I got his new novel, The Black Box, for Christmas but haven’t read it yet. I really enjoy his writing. Crime fiction takes me out of my everyday life – I know I’m relaxing when I read them, because I only read them on holiday.

The mother of two has been trying to change things for the better throughout her career, first as a school teacher, then as a popular member of parliament, then in a management role with Parks Victoria. She is now chief executive officer of the G21 Geelong Region Alliance, and is striving to improve the opportunities of hundreds of thousands of people in five municipalities. She recently sat down with My Coastal Home to tell us what means most to her.
GYM SHOES
I go to Leisurelink five times a week, it’s only five minutes from my house. I’ve been going for about nine years. You’ll see me there at 6am with 100 other people waiting for them to open. It’s really good for you, it’s de-stressing. Leisurelink has about 10,000 members; it’s huge. I reckon it’d easily be one of the best centres in the region.

I like pottering around in the roses and lavenders, I really enjoy that. Each season is different. There are no fruit trees or vegetables, it’s just a display garden. We installed a water tank, which we didn’t have to use much in the past year but seeing as it hasn’t rained much recently, we’ve started using it again.

PROFILE Born Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1957. I migrated to Australia with my family when I was 11. I went to secondary school in Mitcham, studied at Monash University and became a state school teacher, and moved to Geelong in early 1993. Resides
In Highton with my husband Shane. We have a daughter, Hannah, who’s 23 and lives in East Geelong; and a son, Scott, who’s 21 and lives in London. I’m keen to visit him.
Politics I held the Victorian state seat of Geelong Province from 1999-2006, and was a parliamentary secretary twice – for education and training, and the environment. I felt compelled to stand up and try to be a part of it, and to be a voice for a lot of issues that weren’t being looked at. G21 Geelong Region Alliance G21 is the formal alliance between the five councils in the region. It’s very important to work in collaboration as a region, rather than competitively. My job is to continue that work and hopefully advocate for funding for key projects. Travel
Port Douglas is our favourite destination, it’s just got everything. I’ve been there five times in the past six years. It’s not over-developed, like Noosa. We never took the children overseas so my plan for the next 10-15 year is to do a lot more overseas travel.
My handle is @G21elaine. I only joined two years ago when I started working with G21. We have a very low budget, and it’s a very efficient and easy way to get out what we’re working on. I follow Usain Bolt, he’s hilarious – he posts amazing pictures.
Geelong when the Cats are winning The mood of the whole city, the bounce in people’s steps; it’s worth bottling. I don’t think it can be underestimated. Even if you’re not a not a Geelong supporter, the optimism is almost palpable.

IPOD
It was a gift for Christmas one year. I’d never had one before, but I just love it. Even though I also have an iPad, I love the iPod more, because I take it with me. One of the kids set it up, they’re forever putting their music on it. I’m a big fan of U2, Roxy Music and Fleetwood Mac. I’m really excited about David Bowie’s new album and really intrigued about his new single. How about Neil Young coming to The Hill – I couldn’t believe it! Harvest was one of my signature albums in year 12.

It’s an untitled piece from 2007, which was given to me by a special friend who’s dying of cancer. It’s very whimsical and means a lot to me, especially because she’ll no longer be with us. It’s very atmospheric; at different times of the day it has different lights in it. I love Monet – the whole point of my trip to France was to see his works, and his famous garden and lily pond. His art was a feature of my young life, and to be there and see it was just amazing. Summer 2013
