A love of experimenting with style – and a desire to design and decorate – has brought Sue Anthony to where she is now, soaking up the autumn sun from her designer Torquay abode, overlooking the rolling fairways and 18th hole of the golf course at The Sands. Sue didn’t just land in her niche, or travel a path straight out of design school, but embraced her love and flair for design after years working in a furniture store. “I just loved it, and it’s progressed from there,” Sue said. “I loved it at home, and it’s a passion that has just sort of grown. But I saw there was so much room for improvement.” Sue grew up in Wales, in the United Kingdom, before moving to Geelong aged 15. Thirty years later she moved to Torquay for the lifestyle it offered. Sue walks her poodle George daily on the white sand of the nearby beach and has also recently taken up stand up paddle boarding. “George is my second passion,” she said. “I love Torquay and I love the beach.” 8

She also has a love of motorcycles, and regularly rides with her husband Dave to a favourite restaurant in Aireys Inlet, along the Great Ocean Road. Included in her collection is a red Vespa, which was purchased after time spent in Italy a few years ago – a result of another of Sue’s passions: travel. “Travelling broadens your outlook,” she said. “I get lots of inspiration from Asian and Indian influences. “All the colours and all the experiences you get from travelling and seeing the different ways of life. “I just love Italy, the style there is amazing. And Istanbul is where Europe meets Asia; the colours, textures, and rugs, it’s really amazing.” Sue lives out her creative ideas and

coastal lifestyle dreams by designing soft furnishings, tables and couches, interior layouts, and small pieces that fall under the banner of interior decorating for her business, Livingetc. Located in Belmont, Livingetc offers style that reflects modern living, including timeless contemporary designs, affordable indulgence and individual home furnishings. “Last year I went to Milan for a furniture show, and came home with lots of ideas, it was really inspiring.” Sue also takes inspiration from a selection of top interior designers: Greg Natale; Marco Meneguzzi; Thomas Hamel; and Martyn Lawrence Bullard to name a few. “Basically at different levels we all share the same joys and dilemmas with design. Our homes are the most challenging to decorate; the trick is to edit, edit and edit again.” Years ago people may have just bought furniture, but according to Sue it has all changed. “It’s so much more interesting, it’s changing all the time. Home design TV shows have made people aware it’s no longer just about buying furniture, but doing more. They’ve lifted the bar a bit.” Sue loves being ahead of fashions, but believes there is so much more to do than home maintenance – like travelling and

motorcycle riding. “I like things to be really practical, and really comfortable. You don’t want things to be impractical, you want to be able to just come home.” What’s hot right now in her home is hot pink and fuchsia, but that will change. “I like to keep trying and I like to experiment. Colours change all the time. In Europe, orange and yellow are coming through. “Furniture does sort of follow clothing and fashion. What you see on a runway or catwalk, you often see in the home. “I love wallpaper, basics in neutrals, and then splashes of colour. “Different areas suit different things; certain things suit a home on the coast, and a Melbourne city apartment.” Livingetc is something a bit different: “stand out from the crowd” is their motto. “We try to do things a bit differently, it could be bigger, and I could fill a football stadium with all the lovely things out there.” Sue said it’s possible to work around everyone’s budget. “We work with them. There are plenty of options, and you definitely don’t have to spend a fortune.” Current fashions mix old with new. “I love the old, and now you can mix items

special to you with new things. It’s a real crossover, an eclectic sort of mix. “This makes it more personalised, and not just a look. We want to create comfortable, practical interiors, where everything can be loved and used.” Sue said she would never have thought her love for design and decorating would take her so far. “It is the joke at home that my husband goes out to buy lunch and returns home to a totally different space. “I just love it, it’s what I do.”

Window tinting of flat glass provides energy benefits as it reflects, absorbs and reradiates solar energy back outside the home. Window tinting can also help to keep some heat inside in the winter months. Window film provides many benefits. Ideas start with a small seed, a small element that grows. I have heard of gardens that all started with the placement of a single tree or urn and then everything was modelled from that point. coping with a pool Pool coping is the name given to edging that runs around the perimeter of your pool. There is a vast selection of materials available which can be used for pool coping. Designing for 6 Star

Energy Efficiency The minimum 6 Star Standard for home energy efficiency was introduced in May, 2011. The 6 Star Standard applies to all new houses, townhouses and apartments and for additions, renovations or relocations on existing buildings. The objective of these energy efficiency initiatives is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The 6 Star Standard is designed to be a flexible standard – it is performance based rather than prescriptive. This means designers, owner-builders and builders can use their creativity in designing cost effective, functional homes achieving at least six stars. Talk to your building professionals early on in your building project to access the benefits of good design, such as a more comfortable home and cost savings on your energy bills. Before a building surveyor can consider issuing a building permit for the proposed build or works, the appropriate paperwork must be submitted by the owner or builder. A component of this paperwork is a 6 Star

Standard energy rating certificate and report confirming that the floor plans and construction materials meet the minimum star rating. The 6 Star energy rating can be achieved by either using the Deemed to Satisfy method or, as is more common, via the Verification Method and a 6 Star energy rating. Meeting 6 Star compliance is not difficult. It’s about good design, particularly at the planning stages of the project. A well designed 6 Star home doesn’t look any different to your average home, but is projected to use 24 per cent less energy for heating and cooling compared to a 5 Star home. Design decisions regarding the size and layout of your home are no longer simply determined by the construction budget or accommodation needs, but also by the need to achieve the 6 Star energy rating. In Victoria, FirstRate5 software is commonly used. Accredited Thermal Performance Assessors (TPAs or energy raters) provide a specialised assessment service to designers, architects, owner builders and householders in the design and planning of a new home.

The 6 Star Standard for energy efficiency now applies to all new homes, renovations and relocations in Australia.

The software program models the amount of heating and cooling energy required to maintain comfortable temperatures in a building and take into account the climate, season and the design and construction of the building envelope – its walls, roof, windows, ceilings and floors. The TPA will require information about a number of things including: a copy of the floor plans, together with data on the home’s postcode; orientation; the site; the construction materials used in the flooring, roofing, internal and external walls and the

coastal energy cladding; insulation; window types and sizes, frames, glazing and coatings; skylights; floor coverings; ceiling types and heights; exhaust fans; lighting; fireplaces; eaves; verandahs and shading from nearby buildings or trees. The TPA is responsible for interpreting and inputting the required data into the energy rating software programme and a star rating is generated. They can also advise on what the likely impact will be for certain changes to the floor plan and building materials. The energy rating software programs have some flexibility and, if required, the TPA may be able to simulate the star rating for higher/lower levels of insulation, for flipping the plans, changing the type of window glazing and the flooring materials. At the end of the process, the TPA issues a star rating certificate, a report and stamped floor plans that are to be submitted to the Building Surveyor. It is essential that you design for your climate as it can significantly improve comfort levels whilst reducing heating and cooling bills. All round shading is appropriate for tropical climates only and isn’t beneficial in warm, cool or cold climates. Eave-less design (borrowed from Europe) isn’t recommended in Australia. Homes built without eaves may overheat as a result of solar heat gains from the summer sun. Houses with concrete slab floors and those with suspended timber floors perform differently. A concrete slab floor provides thermal mass for the home. The Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast are in the temperate coastal zone. Choosing

an appropriate site for your new home and developing it to make the most of its natural attributes will yield significant economic, lifestyle and environmental benefits. Choose a site with good orientation for your climate and regional conditions. Good solar access is desirable, but the size, orientation and the slope of the block will affect it. A home designed to respond to the site conditions can optimise lifestyle, improve energy efficiency and protect the quality of the natural environment. In the temperate coastal zone a combination of passive solar heating and passive cooling is required. Passive solar heating is about using the

sun as a source of free home heating and is the least expensive way to heat your home. It involves letting winter sun in and excluding unwanted summer sun. Consider using shading devices that exclude early morning, late afternoon or high angle summer sun but admit the low angle winter sun. Correctly designed eaves are the simplest and least expensive shading method for northern elevations and plan carefully to ensure passive solar gain to the rooms that most need it. The ideal orientation for living areas is within the range of 15 degrees west to 20 degrees east of true or solar north.

Passive solar heating relies on greenhouse principles to trap solar radiation. Heat is gained when short wave radiation passes through the glass, where it is absorbed by heavyweight building materials (thermal mass elements such as a concrete slab, or reverse brick veneer walls) and furnishings. Passive cooling maximises the efficiency of the building envelope by minimising heat gain from the external environment and facilitating heat loss by natural cooling sources, such as air movement and cooling breezes. The main design elements for passive cooling include orientation for exposure to cooling breezes; appropriate window sizes, placement and glazing; clear air paths through the building; external shading devices to exclude the unwanted summer sun; installation of ceiling fans and the appropriate levels of insulation. The passive home requires active inhabitants. To ensure suitable comfort levels in the home they should be prepared to lower/raise shading devices; open/close windows and doors; open/close access to living, sleeping or service zones and turn on/ off appliances. To achieve the mandatory 6 Stars, good design is the key, so work closely with your designer, thermal performance assessor (energy rater) or builder. recycled water With the importance of conserving water remaining at the forefront of many people’s minds, Warralily is set to be the first residential estate in greater Geelong to have access to Class A recycled water via Barwon Water’s new Black Rock recycled water plant. Mark Whinfield, Warralily’s general manager of development, said it is critical for new developments to minimise their impact on the environment. This is a responsibility Warralily takes seriously. “The recent warm summer was a timely reminder of the need to be water smart when using our region’s precious water resources,” said Mr Whinfield. “Linking into the recycled water scheme will not only summer proof Warralily, but it will take pressure off local water supplies. It is a great win for sustainability.” In total, Barwon Water is investing more

than $150 million in water and sewerage services at Armstrong Creek, and Warralily residents will be the first to benefit. “The residential purple pipe infrastructure is now being installed. A key part of Warralily’s infrastructure, the $4 million Mount Duneed recycled water tank, is well under way. Brian Singer jointly founded surf wear giant Rip Curl in 1969, a company at which he remains a director. The pioneering surfer and businessman recently sat down with My Coastal Home to tell us about his favourite surfing destinations, among many other things.

Lives

I was born in Brisbane. I moved to Geelong with my dad when I was 13 and from there I gravitated to Torquay, which was great as I always loved the beach. Torquay has changed a lot since those days, but when you’ve lived here for a long time the changes seem more gradual.

I live at Bells Beach with my wife Rachel. I have four children – one son and three daughters. I’d love to have a dog or two, but we travel too much for pets. Bells used to be my second home so living so close is great. The drawing factor for people who live in this part of the world is

BELLS BEACH

Every year with family and friends we go skiing in either Canada or France. One of my favourite places to ski is Chamonix in south-east France. My daughter has been living in the south of France for a while. I usually spend some time at Mount Buller during winter as well.

Favourite surfers Tom Curren was great to watch. On a few occasions I was lucky enough to go on some surfing trips with him, which was a great experience. Wayne Lynch had natural talent in spades and since him the Surf Coast hasn’t really had a top line surfer. I like Mick Fanning because of his speed, and of course Kelly Slater.

If I had to choose one I’d probably say Surfrider Café & Restaurant on Bell Street in Torquay, but Wyndham Resort is also really good.

For many years it was Bells, but these days I’m getting slower and the wave has become a lot more crowded. I think it would have to be Macaronis, a wave off an island near Sumatra in the west of Indonesia.

I don’t really cook, but if I have to it’s usually boiled eggs or pasta. Rachel is a very good cook. We eat a lot of seafood, salad and vegies – it’s healthy and tastes good.

Favourite meal

MY GARDEN

We have a relatively big garden and I find it really relaxing. I often find myself wandering throughout it admiring the different plants and flowers, as well as the view. I don’t really have a favourite part of the garden as it’s constantly changing throughout the year.

These photos were taken on a trip to Indo in 1994. The three-week trip was with a few close friends, including Tom Curren. We were aboard the Indies Trader 1 and making a surfing video that was one of the first of its kind. Surfing has been very good to me and my photos are evidence of this.

Ever since moving to the area as a teenager, I’ve spent most of my life at Bells. I don’t surf there as often these days because of the crowds, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. It is undoubtedly one of the best surf breaks in the world.

SURFBOARDS

Although I can’t actually see the waves breaking, I can sit here and see Bells from my window. I’ve lived here for more than 20 years and never get sick of this view – it’s amazing. I’m very lucky that from my window I can look out over a place that has played such a big role in my life.

I’ve had many favourite boards but I haven’t got a huge collection as a lot of them have gone missing over the years. These boards are still in the same place as where I left them after getting back from a surf yesterday morning. I have both a shortboard and a mal – I spend more time on the mal when surfing locally and the shortboard more in Indo. Autumn 2012
