ANNUAL REPORT 2018/ 2019

ABOUT SURFING NSW Surfing NSW, established in 1963, is the largest and longest running of the recognised state bodies for the sport of surfing in Australia. In conjunction with nine regional associations, Surfing NSW is responsible for managing events, programs and education across the state from grassroots level events through to international professional events such as the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series (WSL QS1000 series), Port Stephens Toyota Pro (women’s QS6000 and men’s QS1000) and the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro (men’s and women’s WSL QS6000).

SURFING NSW CEO LUKE MADDEN

It has been a year of solid growth for surfing across the NSW coastline. The athlete and events pathway has continued to strengthen while adding some new projects, programs and partners to Surfing NSW. The two major new events being the Port Stephens Toyota Pro and the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro. Both events were launched and successfully executed in a record time frame in conjunction with the WSL, Destination NSW and council partners. Financially, the organisation sits in a positive position with a great result in FY18 and continued solid investment into programs, development pathways, resources and key event upgrades. The entire Surfing NSW staff, board of directors as well as regions, clubs, coaches and surf schools have worked tirelessly to achieve such great results together for the sport in our state. From our participation, community and education department, our team has yet again facilitated affiliation of over 120 Boardrider Clubs, 50 Surf Schools as well as accredited over 200 level 1 surf Coaches, 30 judges and 1000 surfers rescue 24/7 participants over the past 12 months. We have successfully renewed the Surfers Rescue 24/7 funding again for 2018 and 2019 to roll our the program which provides free CPR and board rescue techniques which in turn has resulted in increased water safety for all NSW beaches. Across our high performance and athlete development department we saw great results across all disciplines including shortboard, longboard, stand-up paddleboard surfing and racing, bodyboard and kneeboard at the Australian Title level. With a focus on the far NSW south coast – through the Office of Sport partnership and the south east regional Academy of Sport - we have seen performance levels dramatically rise as well as participation at higher levels. Our team recently has also signed an important partnership with the Sports High Schools of NSW promoting surfing further into the education department. Our events department continued to deliver over 45 events - through all discpilnes of surfing at a regional, state, national through to professional WSL level - in conjunction with Surfing Australia and WSL. In addition there was also over 50 other affiliated community and regional based surfing events run in NSW. A special mention to the voluntary Board of Surfing NSW chaired by John O’Neill and to our committed and dedicated team of staff for their efforts to ensure that we deliver on our purpose at Surfing NSW.

SURFING NSW CHAIRMAN JOHN O’NEILL

It’s been a great year for our organisation, as shown by our results. Our mindset continues to be firmly about creating opportunities for the surfing community both in our state and right across Australia. We are clear about what we value: our environment, surfing’s history and our unique culture. Within our regional and national network of surfing organisations, we are continually asking: How can all boats float on a rising tide? We brokered a partnership with AirAsia for surfing in Australia, bringing together the World Surf League, Surfing Australia, and ALL the surfing States (Qld, Vic, SA, WA, Tasmania and, of course, NSW). This was our philosophy in action. We are also looking to grow the significance of our sport within Australian society, including by working with the NSW Government and the Surf Life Saving movement to train surfers to save lives and make our beaches safer. We are focused on the importance of protecting and defending the authenticity of the surf culture. And we know to continue to be successful we need to maintain the support and respect of the regional and local communities who host us and our events, including local indigenous peoples. We can all see that women surfers are ripping and we want to create more and more opportunities for women in and around our sport. More broadly, we want to create opportunities not just for surfing professionals but for everyone interested in positively engaging with the surf lifestyle, including by creating jobs, internships and volunteer roles. The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where surfing will be contested for the first time, and new Wave Pool technologies will make us better known and more relevant to many, many more people. We are building for the future by better engaging fans, recreational surfers and even just the “curious” in our events and programs. At the same time, we are celebrating and reinforcing our role and contribution to the Australian way of life. My thanks to the incredibly hard working crew at Surfing NSW, my fellow directors and all our regions for all you continue to do to make this possible.

SURF LIFE SAVING AND SURFING NSW JOIN FORCES

For the first time since surfing’s boom in popularity in the 1960s, leaders of Surf Life Saving NSW and Surfing NSW have reached an agreement between the two state bodies. Increased co-operation, strong developmental pathways for athletes, and shared industry knowledge are just some of the many benefits for Australia’s coastal communities. Some of the features of the new agreement include lifeguards and lifesaving assets provided to increase safety at Surfing NSW competitions, while the Surf Life Saving Academy will conduct First Aid Training for the Maroubra-based organisation. Additionally, Surfing NSW will provide fully accredited judges to the Midford NSW Board Riding Championships, and both organisations will cross-promote events and development opportunities for their members. Australian surfing legend and pioneer Simon Anderson of North Narrabeen, invented the thruster (3-fin) Surfboard setup in 1980. Anderson was brought up in the Surf Life Saving movement in the midst of the historical separation of the two groups. “Throughout the 1960s I was a member of Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club as a Nipper and went onto completing my Bronze Medallion with the club. I competed in the State Titles but wasn’t keen on doing patrols so as surfing flourished throughout the 60s, I naturally moved away from the surf club. “The relationship between surfers and surf lifesavers soured during this time because there wasn’t a good understanding of each other’s needs. Surfboards were big and a safety hazard to swimmers and lifesavers would place the flags in the best surf spots on the beach without consideration. The conflict increased when local councils brought in a registration fee for surfboards, and it was the lifesavers that had to enforce the fines and confiscate boards. “These days there is a better understanding of each other’s requirements on the beach. The partnership is a good fit because surf lifesavers aren’t patrolling the beach seven days and out of hours, surfers are almost always out there and perform many rescues. It’s beneficial for everyone that we have a good relationship because water safety is what we’re all about.” Newport SLSC’s elite academy head coach and international surf journalist Nick Carroll said, “everyone’s heard about the bad blood between surf lifesavers and surfers, but lesser known is that both have been cooperating for years now. There’s the mythology and the reality, and the reality is that surf clubs can do with really great surfers on their side during an incident. It’s in the club’s greater interest to upskill surfers and help them out because when there’s no one else on the scene, they can save lives.” With the agreement now firmly in place and a strong bond between the two organisations, lifesavers and surfers will be riding the same waves for many years to come.

SURFERS RESCUE 24/7

Surfers Rescue 24/7 is a free CPR and board rescue that aims to minimise this risk through the provision of free training to the NSW surfing community. In 2018 courses have been run at: Queenscliff Congo Saltwater Culburra Marouobra Broulee Bulli X 2 A total of 121 rescues have been logged by NSW surfers since April.

SURFERS SURF RESCUE SCHOOLS 24/7

With 200-plus coaches are currently listed in the Surfing NSW network and 45-plus surf schools are currently operating across the state, NSW is the ideal place to learn to surf in Australia. Surfing NSW complete an estimated 250K-plus surf school lessons each calendar year.
