Surfing NSW presents Sea Notes

PRESENTS

A GREAT PARTNERSHIP.

SURFING NSW CEO MARK WINDON Welcome to our new revamped newsletter Sea Notes. There is certainly plenty happening in surfing at present. After six great years in Port Macquarie, the Australian Surf Festival packed up and moved to Coffs with some really good surf across the three weeks for all competitors which this year included the Wahu Australian Bodyboard Titles as well. Again, the whole event was a true celebration of all surfing disciplines. Surfing NSW are, to coin an old surfing phrase, stoked, to be able to announce, NRMA as their major sponsor. It is a great fit for both organisations and hopefully the start of a long lasting friendship. Some of our iconic clubs are all celebrating the big 50 this year: Maroubra, Merewether and North Narrabeen are three clubs that have produced some amazing talent over the years. Former World Amateur Champion, Mark Scott from Maroubra, recently launched a book, The Golden Years of the Bra (which coincided with a great launch night). It’s well worth a read with some classic photos and I believe that the North Narra boys have something similar in the pipeline, we will keep you posted on that one. The days are getting longer and summer is around the corner, Surfing Australia has announced that the Australian Boardriders Battle is back on with a bucket-load of cash up for grabs. This year’s final at Cronulla was all-time and set the bar for club surfing not only in Australia, but worldwide. Subway are getting behind junior surfing in Australia by sponsoring a National Junior Series which will only further strengthen the pathway for our aspiring young athletes. Surfing NSW were recently at Cape Solander helping with the final touches for the Red Bull Cape Fear Event which ran on a sunny Sunday in late August. If you tuned in on Fuel TV or on the World Wide Web, then chances are you were blown away by some of the slabs the boys were throwing themselves into. Surfers Rescue continues to grow in popularity with over 4000 NSW surfers having completed the course and recording plenty of rescues. With less than five percent of NSW beaches patrolled, recreational surfers play a vital role in aquatic safety and helping their local communities. Surfers are in the water 365 days a year, dawn until dusk and are the unsung heroes in keeping our beaches safe. If you would like to do the course ring Surfing NSW or check out the brand new Surfers Rescue 24/7 web platform at surfersrescue.com.au. Remember, the worst day surfing beats the best day working.

2014 NRMA NSW JUNIOR STATE TITLES HIGHLIGHTS

J

ackson Giles (Maroubra) fought a hard battle with fellow event standout Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park) to take out the Under-18 Boys NRMA NSW State Title. Both surfers locked in a series of excellent scores and until the final five minutes Ball looked set to take the title, however Giles was able to sneak past his fellow competitor with an impressive 6.87 wave score (out of a possible ten points) and claim the prestigious win. Giles is the second Maroubra local to win the event in as many years, with fellow Maroubra local Monty Tait winning the Under-18 title on home soil in 2013. In the same year, Giles also unfortunately missed out on qualifying for the Australian Junior Titles by one spot.

H

olly Wawn (Newport) bagged her third NSW State Title in as many years when she took down an all-star cast in the final of the Under-18 Girls. Wawn, managed to link together a chain of stylish and technically sound forehand snaps to lock in a 16.83 heat total (out of a possible 20 points), which consequently left her fellow competitors in a combination situation. Runner-up Paris Whittaker (Caringbah) put up a valiant fight in the tightly contested final, but ultimately fell short, while Kobie Enright (Tweed Heads) claimed third and Tess Mawson (Manyana) finished in fourth.

WORLD QUALIFYING SERIES SURFER MATT BANTING “Surfing NSW were responsible for providing an awesome part of my childhood. The comps I entered as a grommet paved the way for the events I’m currently competing in, whether it was with me gaining experience or developing a competitive strategy. I think Surfing NSW events are the perfect stepping stone for any kid aspiring to be a professional surfer. I thank them wholeheartedly for their support throughout the years.”

NRMA AND SURFING NSW ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE

S

urfing NSW has secured the support of The National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) for 2014/15 as the organisations’ major sponsor. The NRMA will support more than 30 youth surf events to be held at NSW beaches along the east coast. The sponsorship, announced by NRMA and Surfing NSW will benefit youth surfing and support Surfing NSW water safety initiatives including Surfers Rescue 24/7 a free CPR course available to the NSW community thanks to this partnership. NRMA local Director Tim Trumper said this partnership enables the NRMA to support one of Australia’s favourite leisure activities going to the beach to surf and swim as well as upcoming achievers in the sport. Over 40 per cent of NRMA’s 2.5 million Members live outside Sydney and many of them live by the coast and surf and swim regularly. “This NRMA and Surfing NSW alliance brings together two community minded organisations focused on helping people. Surfers are at the beach from dawn to dusk, every day; they are instrumental in numerous water rescues. Similarly, NRMA patrols rescue people every day when they break down,” Mr Trumper said.

10

The NRMA’s youth programme Free2go, a special Roadside Assistance Membership for young drivers aged 16-20 will underpin the organisations’ support at a range of different surf events over the forthcoming year. Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon said to coin an old surfing phrase we are “stoked” to have the NRMA as our major sponsor, both organisations are member based that give back to their Members and local communities. “This year the NRMA celebrates 90 years as an integral part of road safety in NSW. Surfing NSW has just celebrated 50 years of involvement in surfing as a sport and making beaches safer. Our organisations have a lot in common, I am looking forward to developing our like-minded partnership,” Mr Windon said. Surfing NSW, established in 1963, is the largest and longest running of the recognised state bodies for the sport of surfing in Australia. Surfing NSW has over 100 affiliated board rider clubs and 45 licensed surf schools, operating from Kingscliff in the north of the state to Tathra in the south. See www.surfingnsw.com. au for more information.

JONES BEACH BOARDRIDERS Location: Jones Beach, NSW. About: Jones Beach Boardriders has been running over the past 30 years, celebrating its 30th birthday last year. The club was strong in the earlier years boasting large member numbers and talent from the area. Members: 150 members Famous faces: Dylan and Darren Longbottom, Brendan Russell, Rhys Bombaci, The Mitchell brothers and Dylan Rodgers. The Future: Jones Beach Boardriders spokesman Steve Conti says: “For many years the club ran with the age groups starting at the 14’s and up. We never really had a strong junior growth for the next generation coming through. In 2011 the club had three to four kids around the age of eight that would continue to turn up and compete in a heat together, just to be involved, as their Dad’s would be there competing also. However, over the last three years myself and fellow member Clint Rodgers decided to concentrate on the groms more and focus on building the junior presence. Now, in 2014 the club has 90 members under the age of 14 and 150 members in total being the biggest we have had in its 30-year existence.”

Anything else: “This year has seen huge growth in girls competing. Jones Beach Boardriders have 28 in total. With Sally Fitzgibbons literally living 500 metres away, the young girls see Sally a lot when she is home which brings lots of inspiration and also which drives them to surf more.”

PHILIPPA ANDERSON AND JARED HICKEL TAKE OUT THE HIF NSW OPEN STATE TITLES

D

ue to solid six-to-eight foot conditions, the final day of the HIF NSW Open State Titles was forced to relocate to Shelly Beach where competitors in the Open divisions put their powersurfing game to the test at the notorious Shelly Beach bombie. Jared Hickel’s never-say-die attitude was the determining factor in claiming the NSW Open State Title. The powerful goofy-footer managed to snag himself a 12.43 heat total in the dying minutes of the final to take the win away from an in-form Jesse Adam who got bumped down into the runner up spot. Philippa Anderson fought a tight battle with Skye Burgess in the Open Women’s final with less than 0.04 points separating the two when the final hooter sounded. However, Anderson’s ability to link together a series of technical cutbacks and snaps on sizey waves was enough to edge ahead of Burgess and claim the final.

RESULTS: Open Men 1 - Jared Hickel (Cronulla) 2 - Jesse Adam (Merewether) 3 - Hayden Blair (Mollymook) 4 - Nic Squires (Corrimal)

QUICK CHAT WITH OWEN WRIGHT When you’re on tour, is it sometimes hard to give back to the sport that has given you so much? Yeah it really is. You’re so dedicated to succeeding on the world stage, but it’s the system that’s supported you the whole way. I have a big family and they try to help me as much as they can, so it’s been good to have some time out and give back to that system that’s allowed me to get to where I am. I just love watching groms surf also and seeing them perform. I watched the NSW State Junior Titles last year and the level was really high. I enjoy it. Other than your brother Mikey, is there anyone who has really stood out in your eyes? From what I saw at the State Titles a year or so ago, I’d have to say Luke Wrice and Kalani Ball. Both those guys are really good. Also, Monty Tait was really good as well. I remember I came to watch Mikey surf and I caught one of Monty’s heats and I thought ‘wow, he’s got so much power.’ He was really good. I rated him pretty highly. There’s a lot of really good kids coming through NSW at the moment. Having come through the system when you were a grommet, doing State and Regional Titles, do you now look at it and think that it’s changed much? I think it’s on the improve that’s for sure. The level of support has definitely got better in recent years and it’s great that kids now have the opportunity to use facilities like the HPC [Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre] and be able to access all the knowledge of the guys who run it. When I was coming through, we had camps and stuff, which was great, but now they have the top of the range of everything. It’s the greatest thing for surfing now. Talk to us a bit about your ideas for a future an ASP Pro Junior Series event on the NSW South Coast? I do think there’s a lot of groms on the NSW South Coast who maybe don’t get the same opportunities as groms on the North Coast. When I was a kid there were lot of events up the coast and not too many down south. I’ve been speaking to Surfing NSW about how I’d love to see more events down that way and possibly getting one down there in the near future. That’s really what it’s all about, the future and the groms that will take us there.

INDIGENOUS OTIS CAREY CROWNED AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS SURFING CHAMP. In May, Otis Carey was crowned Australian Indigenous Surfing Champion at Bells Beach taking down former Australian Champion Russell Molony (Central Coast, NSW) in small but clean waves. The well-known natural footer wowed the crowds with an incredible display of progressive surfing mixed with powerful carves. Carey was dominant all event taking out the top 4 heat totals over the two days and 4 of the top 5 wave scores. In the final, Carey blasted his way to a 16.80 heat total, including an event high 9.8, to better Molony’s 10.63. James Mercy (Currumbin, QLD) and Simon Knox (Sunshine Coast, QLD) finished in third and fourth respectively. “I’ve always wanted to win this contest so I’m really happy.” said an elated Carey “Last year I was not riding great boards but this year my boards are really good and I feel a lot more healthy this year” “I really just came down to catch up with everyone and that’s the attitude I had coming into the event.” “Its hard to explain winning this competition. It’s such a special thing for all the indigenous surfers to get together and that’s probably the most special thing about the contest.”

SURFERS RESCUE 24/7

W

orld-renowned big-wave surfer and Hawaiian waterman Laird Hamilton is the latest professional surfer to put his support behind Surfing NSW’s free CPR and board rescue course, Surfers Rescue 24/7. Hamilton attended the Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival at Shoal Bay in May and witnessed the merits of the water safety program Surfers Rescue 24/7 first hand. Hamilton was impressed with the simplicity and ease of the course, commenting that surfers are the ideal people in keeping the ocean safe. “What better way to make the ocean safer than having people who know what’s going on happening in the ocean, skilled up to save someone who may be in trouble,” said Hamilton when discussing the program. “There’s nothing like feeling helpless in the ocean, so if Surfers Rescue 24/7 helps so that people don’t have that feeling, then it’s definitely a good thing.” Hamilton added: “I’ve saved a lot of people who’ve been in trouble in my time and I think all surfers feel a bit of a responsibility to look out for others in the ocean.” Laird joins the ever-increasing list of surfers who endorse Surfers Rescue 24/7. Professional surfers Kelly Slater, Mark Richards, Layne Beachley, Barton Lynch, Sunny Garcia, Trent Munro and Glenn “Micro” Hall have all thrown their support behind the program. In 2013 Surfers Rescue 24/7 won the Community Education Program of the Year at the NSW Water Safety Awards in conjunction with the AUSTSWIM NSW Awards of Excellence. The Surfers Rescue 24/7 initiative was sparked by a need to cover the gap between patrolled beaches and remote beaches in an effort to reduce deaths from drowning in NSW. Surfing NSW, CEO, Mark Windon has praised the NSW Government in supporting this water safety initiative and Surf Life Saving NSW for their support in delivery of the CPR component. “We have recorded numerous rescues at unpatrolled locations by surfers who have completed the course,” said Windon. “Who knows what the outcome would have been had these surfers with this skill-set had not been on hand to render assistance.” All surfers who participated in the course will receive a certificate stating they’re a now properly accredited. Any surfer from the recreational grass-roots boardrider to a professional surfer of any discipline of surfing is welcome to participate in Surfers Rescue 24/7. To find out more check out surfersrescue247.com or email info@surfingnsw.com.au or call (02) 9349 7055.
