W i ng m a n Tr ials The Wingman trials once again ran in the days leading up to the main event to decide the Victorian Wildcard who gets a spot in the main event. Jack Perry emerged victorious besting Victoria’s highest rated Pro Junior surfer, Harry Mann, in the final held in near-perfect two-foot waves at Rincon. Mann had the lead in the final, but Perry took it back with an 8.5 at the half-way mark, to combine with his 7.0 for a total of 15.4, to Mann’s 10.9 (5.5 and 5.4). “I was not expecting this at all, it’s come as a massive surprise,” Perry said. “I’ve come second to my best mates numerous amounts of times, and been envious of them in the main event. Now I’ll be able to tick this off the bucket list.”

The pinnacle of Indigenous Surfing in the Country, the event was brought back in 2012 after a 16year hiatus to Bells Beach, which is a seen as a significant indigenous landmark.
With great waves again in 2013, the Final saw a re-match of 2012 with Russel Molony (Central Coast) facing off against Joe Haddon (Forster). This year, Haddon took the win in perfect 2-3ft high tide Rincon over Molony scoring 16.33 to Molony’s 15.94. “It’s like a dream” said Haddon after the win. “I’ve seen sporting events go down to the wire and imagined how the winners would feel and today it actually happened to me - It is honestly the best day of my life to win an event like.”
I’m pleased that Joe has won- he’s a deserving winner.” In the Master’s Division, former ASP World Tour surfer Robbie Page took out the field after surviving a car crash a few days earlier. “It shook me to have such a serious accident and I’m very lucky to be alive let alone at this special event” said Page. “This is an amazing gathering and it’s growing in numbers and we all can’t wait to get back here next year - Bells is a special place.”
“I’m really happy for Joe to win this event” said The Open Women’s division was won by Tweed Molony. “It’s an incredible event and after my Heads surfer Amber Mercy who won the final in win last year it lead to really good results at the her first surf in Victoria and her second ever surf National titles and then at the World Surfing in a wetsuit! “It’s been a fantastic few days here Games - It’s just a great feeling to be here and I’m honoured to win and hope next year we with a lot of friends and surf good waves and see more girls here.” I am really happy to have made the final and

S ur f i ng V i c t or i a ’ s Indigenous Surfing Surfing Victoria’s Indigenous Surfing Program is now in its 15th year and continues to grow with indigenous programs ranging from Portland to Mallacoota. This year, over 800 participants were involved in the program including events such as the 2013 Woorrangalook Koori Surf Titles held at Urqharts Bluff which had over 250 participants and hundreds more onlookers.
This year’s winner of the Open men’s divisions in the Woorrangalook Koori Surf Titles was Sandy Point’s Jordie Campbell who went on to surf in the Wingman Pre-Trials at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.
A major part of the Surfing Victoria Indigenous Program is the full time employment of Steve Parker and Anthony Hume to run all of the programs across the state. This is supported by also providing work for indigenous coaches and running over 10 cultural awareness education sessions.

The Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls Presented by Ghanda was run across the state over November and December visiting 9 beaches between Portland and Mallacoota. 350 girls participated in the program, which combines water safety skills with surfing knowledge and the chance to surf with World Tour surfer Bec Woods. Local surf stars, India Payne and Jess Laing were also involved in the tour that allows the participants to learn surf skills, a basic water rescue and receive a show bag and a t-shirt from Ghanda. Each location saw a pair of Dragon sunglasses given out to a lucky girl along with a heap of other prizes from Ghanda. Head Coach Bec Woods was stoked to see such a great turn out again this year. “Its awesome to see such a massive amount of participation down here! The program is a great way to improve the water and surfing skills of the next generation of female surfers.” The Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls is Presented by Ghanda and Supported by Dragon, Team Up, Cancer Council Sunscreen and Be the Influence.

A & L tradies challenge Josh Johnson-Baxter (Ocean Grove) has been crowned the inaugural A&L Tradies Champion after claiming the Open Men’s division in marginal surf at Jan Juc. The first contest of its kind in Victoria to cater specifically for tradies, the event saw tradesman from around Victoria battle it out for bragging rights and the chance to win $4000 worth of Quiksilver Vouchers.
The Over 35 Men’s final was a slow affair with large lulls in the action. Steve Buckland (Jan Juc) came out on top over Richard Field (Barwon Heads) with only .57 of a point separating the pair. The event also saw a pair division included which included a trade and a non-tradie could surf together as a team.

With a second consecutive day of strong onshore winds and a dying swell, both Boys and Girls Under 14 divisions were battling it out for an all expenses paid trip to the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre in Northern New South Wales. Wylie went toe to toe with fellow Jan Juc grom Xavier Huxtable for the whole final with the lead changing multiple times and Wylie winning on the last wave of the final. Although Xavier Huxtable was unable to take out the Under 14s Division, he did take the Under 12 Boys division in a convincing fashion putting the whole final in a combination situation.
