Richie Porta Richie Porta is one of the most talked about people within the surfing industry. He is also a Victorian, having grown up on the Mornington Peninsula surfing for the Peninsula Surf riders Club. Moving his way through the ranks as an amateur judge at State Rounds and into the ASP, Richie became the ASP Head Judge in 2010. We shot some quick questions to Richie via email between events to find out more about the man behind the World Tour judges. Where and when did you learn how to surf and when was the first contest you competed in? I learnt when I was 8 years old at Arrawarra in North NSW. My first contest was the schoolboys at Gunnamatta when I was 13. What was your first judging job and how did you do you think it went? Back in the day, you had your heat, came in and judged the next few heats as soon as you were changed. This ended up failing as too many heats had wrong results due to dodgy judging from bias guys scoring their mates high. The first
surfing makes me realise how crucial grass roots surfing is. Our young guys and girls have a fantastic advantage over the rest of the world’s junior surfers from a young age here due to the mentoring/coaching and support they receive from their local clubs. This continues at the next level with Surfing Victoria and Surfing Australia enhancing the skill level of our juniors with all the competitions on offer, along with coaching/camps etc. There have been lots of changes in the ASP/WSL over the past year or two. How do you think the sport is fairing 1 year into the new ownership model?

There will always be a need for both. To be the best surfer in the world, the champion at the end of the year has to be well rounded in all sorts of waves. That means we need to run events at beach breaks, reef, breaks and point breaks. We need high performance waves along with serious consequential waves that most surfers do not want to know about. Rounds 1 and 2 were held earlier in the year at Mornington Peninsula, at Gunnamatta and St Andrews.
