Starting at the young age of 15, Kym Thompson made designing surfboards his life’s work and to this day he designs and shapes everything from single-fin boards, right down to all multi-fin configurations. Originally Kym began his career shaping longboards and as the shortboard era took hold, Kym advanced his skills and transitioned his designs to meet the demands of the market.

With decades of experience in the shaping bay, Carl Schaper belongs to the higher echelon of shaper royalty on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Knowing a thing or two about high-performance surfing, Carl shapes for some of the very best surfers out there, including longboard 2x World Champion (Bonga Perkins), pipeline charger and industry legends like Garrett McNamara (Guiness Book of Records for biggest wave ever ridden).
Marcie grew up surfing in Australia and started designing surfboards at the Aloha Factory in 1989. Coming from a traditional, yet eccentric background, when you look a little closer at the lines and rockers, you will see how our longboard, funboard and fish have evolved in terms of performance and taken on Marcie’s highly regarded style.
Tully St. John is the owner/shaper of the legendary Laguna Bay Longboards from Noosa Heads, Australia. Down to earth and heavily involved in the local longboarding subculture, Tully has been shaping since his early days in high school. His shapes are being used by multiple World Champions, right through to everyday surfers, wanting something truly exceptional under their Tully’sfeet. shapes have been honed on the long running walls of Noosa’s Surf Reserve and its many surrounding beach breaks.

NSP is currently teamed up with Hawaiian based Carl Schaper and the Australians, Tully St. John, Kym Thompson, and Marcie O’Neill. All masters at their trade, these shapers create the shapes that allow top-level surfers to achieve the impossible, while also providing groms with the gear that enables them to hone their skills from entry-level, right up to the tour.
Shapers Union boards will be predominately constructed using the latest high-performance Custom Surf Epoxy (CSE); the next-level in surfboard technology by NSP. Our very best craftsmen start out with a CNC-cut EPS core and sand it by hand into the final desired shape. Each shape then gets a different tried-and-tested glassing schedule with a UV-stable resin, along with fiber-reinforced tail patches, finalized with a satin rub finish. Shapers Union boards can be found in our PU constructions. Shapers Union board comes standard with NSP’s FTU fin box setup and the result is a high-performance surfboard with plenty of flex, generating speed and maneuverability unlike anything else. The CSE longboards will also feature a wood stringer and carbon string ers on the bottom. The NSP Pro-9 is designed by Carl Schaper as a performance longboard, and it is Bonga Perkins’ favourite all-around longboard. For over 20 years now, former 2-time World Champion Bonga has been riding slight variations of this shape. The most significant improvement is in the Pro-9’s nose riding capability.

Shape: The Pro-9 is a longboard with as much shortboard crammed into it as possible. Carl Schaper will often point out the back-third of the board, as it fits almost perfectly on his 6’2” step up, with the same thickness, tail dimensions and rails. The bottom has a soft roll to V in the middle, running into V with a double concave in the Designedtail.as a single fin or quad fin setup, the Pro-9 is a low-volume, extremely high-performance longboard, capable of doing it all with tons of manoeuvring and solid nose-riding! Fin Set-up: The Pro-9 comes in a 4+1 fin configuration enabling you to be creative in your setup as a quad or thruster. The Atomic Flyer is a Kym Thompson design.
Other interesting features such as the flat deck, delivers a very unique and positive response feel under foot. In addition, the distinctive beveled rail concept not only adds to the retro look, it increases the form and function. This allows for volume throughout the board to be maintained without impacting and bulking up the rail and dulling the boards response and reactivity.
The purpose of this is to add stability to the board in small and less powerful waves. This increased volume delivers and helps maintain forward momentum and forward trim sensitivity. The essence of the outline is defined by the double wings, which delivers a very purposeful function to this design. The objective of these “flyers” serves to increase the displacement and “trim” area throughout the board. This increase in the board’s displacement increases the volume under foot while maintaining a refinement in the tail outline. The result is an increased low speed dynamic.
The soft diamond tail shape delivers a swallow tail like performance, but without the worries and maintenance issues associated to the pragmatic swallow tails.

While working on Maui as a custom surfboard builder, Buzz had an epiphany about producing affordable, versatile, durable and great performing surfboards. Buzz correctly realized there were everyday surfers who needed an affordable board that performed in Hawaii, yet they didn’t require “custom” or specialized competition or extreme surf boards. His dream was a utilitarian surfboard that could ride in the back of a pick-up truck to the beach, be left in the sun all-day or loaned to a friend without fear of damage – of course it had to surf well enough to be given to his long-time surfing buddies, neighbors and friends.

Choosing repurposed, recycled or renewable resources wherever we can is essential to us as a brand, creating a more sustainable future for ourselves and our sport.
The quest began, so Buzz summoned his friends working for a leading composites manufacturer with the goal to create a light, very durable surf board at highly competitive prices. Working together they introduced a new epoxy technology that would go on to revolutionize the industry and quite possibly recreational surfing. Weekend and occasional surfers no longer had to rely on the ill- performing “foamies” or be relegated to the used board market.

NSP was born in 2001 from the vision of Bruce “Buzz” Hansen, a life-long surfer, skater and all round waterman.
Our code name during development was “New Surf Project”. The name stuck and “NSP” was established. Over the years, we changed and evolved, and so did the name. Today, NSP stands for “Nature”, “Surfing” and “Products” because at the end of the day, that is what the company is all about.

NSP CocoMat is the world’s first and only Patent Pending construction that uses natural fibers from coconut husks to create a light and strong micro sandwich. Another industry leading innovation by NSP is the use of water based dye pigments in our CocoMat construction. These dyes use zero percent solvents or other toxic additives.
In keeping with our pledge to pursue sustainable materials and manufacturing, NSP has introduced Flax Fiber Rail technology to the CocoMat series in 2019; resulting in the CocoFlax range. This already eco-friendly product benefits from this highly durable reinforced fiber made from the flax seed plant, and helps NSP in reducing the use of fiberglass and overall carbon footprint.

NSP was the first to incorporate shape molded SecureCell EPS blanks in our surf- and SUP manufacturing process. The result is almost zero foam dust waste.

We have a combination of kraft paper wrap and tissue paper that we use to package the boards and although we are striving to be 100% sustainable in our packaging, we are not quite there yet with our PU boards. We have yet to find a material that keeps the boards protected without scratching or damaging the clear coat- if you have any suggestions, please contact our product team to discuss. We are always open to hear how we can become better for the planet!
