CONTEXT Coney Island is ready for new growth. It has been a center for new ideas, innovations, and above all, the glorification of life in all its forms. The parachute pavilion brings that life back. It reaches into the past for inspiration from that burst of life that was Coney Island, while looking to the future in its design. COMPONENT (JELLYFISH) Simple as a single unit, the component derives sophistication from a variety of configurations. Unlike static building components of the past, the ‘jellyfish’ components flex and transform; alternately holding light, filtering view, and acting as an ever-changing facade. The flexibility of the ‘jellyfish’ works both on a unit scale and as a part of the overall pavilion, allowing the form of the building to embody the undulation and freedom of the component type. The ‘jellyfish’ becomes souvenir; bringing form, light, and playfulness from the past, but manufactured and designed using technologies and techniques of today. PAVILION The parachute pavilion embodies the direction of Coney Island today by bringing light and life back to the area, extending out of the earth towards the sky. Excavated green space is displaced upwards as roof gardens, level with the boardwalk. The pavilion grows up around them, with its heavier roots near the entry, becoming lighter as it rises toward the south side. LIFE The parachute pavilion is a place to see and be seen, a place to drop into another world, a place to leave the cares of your life behind, a place that is always changing. The simplicity of enjoyment, the spectacle created of everyday life calls to children and adults alike.
