'All good things come in twos!' Yes, it's true as the recent second Surphang trip to San Clemente in California certainly proved! Having organised to hook up with Pro surfer, Dylan Goodale (who's mind blowing shots will be coming your way in an issue very soon!), a second top notch shredder also rocked up at his local in the form of come back king, Kolohe Andino! So our first issue to hit double digits sees a 'Pro Show' exclusive catching up with Kolohe as he prepares for the penultimate tour event this year, the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Santa Cruz. Meanwhile we also catch up with two Surphang chums from 'Champ Chats' earlier this year, Breyden Taylor and Colt Ward, and find out where their surfing's at six months on. These two were ripping apart the well known classic beach break of T Street during the week so 'Hot Spots' profiles two of San Clemente's iconic waves, T Street and of course Trestles just along the coast. While 'Fab Five' looks at the past few years of shooting around the globe, our 'Hot Spots' section profiles not one but two pairs of brothers who are all doing their family names proud and proving that all good things really do come in twos! So here it is, Issue Ten with so much inside you may just need to read it two times to take it all in!

Kolohe Andino kicks his tail high with a tasty backhand air reverse.
Kolohe Andino has had some huge challenges to face in Twenty Twelve. Just being a rookie on the World Tour is enough, but being one of three with Gabriel Medina and John John Florence at your side seriously piled the pressure on the young Californian surf star. And yet ironically, it wasn't this pressure that caused problems for Kolohe in the middle of his first year on tour – it was in fact a simple free surf back at his local break in San Clemente where an air attempt landed in the fats resulted in a serious ankle injury that took him out the water for the next few months. But Kolohe's made of strong stuf and he's recently made a pretty solid come back too, with some impressive heat scores in his returning events, taking down some of the big names on his way. So when we heard he was back at home while we were in town, we had to catch up with the man from San Clemente himself!
SM - 06
Coming from the central hub of surfing in California, San Clemente, Kolohe Andino is considered locally as simply the latest in a long line of successful surfers. So there's very little hype when he's back in town. In fact apart from his videographer, we were treated to a pretty exclusive show of this World Tour rookie in training for his continuing contest come back. Still with his ankle strapped for support, it was quite clear that Kolohe's confidence was well and truly back both in and out of the water. But of course, it had been a very diferent story four months earlier.
Kolohe doesn't just bust airs.... his tube riding's pretty cool too!

While training back at home after the Volcom Fiji Pro, Kolohe sufered a serious ankle injury which put him out of the water for a considerable length of time, right in the middle of his rookie year on tour. Kolohe fills in the detail:
“Basically, I was taking five days of because I had a small twinge in my right hip. During those five days, I was doing a juicing diet. On the sixth day, my hip felt good, the sun was out and I was all juiced up from a ginger, kale, spinach, jalapeño, carrot, garlic and lemon juice. I was frothing. There were little shoulder-high wedges on the shore at Riviera. Fun in the sun. I paddled out with my Dad, Morgan Maassen and Dylan Goodale, which gets me even more psyched because I love surfing with my Dad. It was a full froth fest. About ten waves in, a little left comes my way and I race down the line thinking, “John John (Florence)…John John…John John…full rotation…Rio de Janeiro…Final Against Parko.” I hit it, go in the air, do a 360 and land way too far in the fats. I heard a significant popping noise and started to scream. Froth fest over...”

Of course, we all know Kolohe kills it when sticking air reverses.
SM - 10
Fortunately, Kolohe was back in the water ready for the Hurley Pro at Trestles in September but he had always been prepared for the worst as injuries can be totally unpredictable and recovery times vary greatly. Having just made it onto the tour, Kolohe had every eventuality covered, even down to thinking about the ASP Wildcard:
“Absolutely, it’s all I think about, but I will cross that bridge when I get there. If I do get back in time for the last dash to the end of the year, I will be trying my very hardest to get some results. For now, I am focusing on strengthening my body and mind to prepare for the tour once I'm healed. In regards to the wildcard, I am not even sure how they pick them and who decides or if I will even need one. If worse comes to worse and I apply and don’t get a wildcard, I’ll just have to do the qualifying series next year and try my best to requalify. But being on the tour means everything to me and I want to do whatever it takes to maintain my spot. What I have learned with all this is that you don’t take anything for granted and live every second to its fullest because it can be snatched from you like that.”

At the end of October, Kolohe was once again training hard at his local spot T Street just down from his home in San Clemente. The waves were small but his airs no the less impressive, especially as he chose to weigh himself down with a few extra layers of rubber in preparation for the cooler waters further north when he would embark on his campaign to regain some lost ground at the O'Neill Coldwater Classic at Santa Cruz earlier this month. Kolohe Andino loves to get those fins out the water and up in the air!

Regaining lost ground though has certainly been Kolohe's only focus for the past few months. Although his return to top level competitive surfing was hesitant to say the least with nothing that spectacular at the Trestles event, this seemed to spur him into a renewed vigour to post some impressive results as he returned to the tour for the European stage. At both the France and Portugal events, he finished with his two highest tour placings this year, taking down some top names on his way. It was obvious Kolohe intended to show he was back and meant business! Kolohe's focusing on his come back and nothing's going to get in his way!

Kolohe Andino
So as the end of a challenging year reaches its end, no doubt Kolohe will be working hard to achieve everything he can to maintain his place amongst the world's elite surfers. Certainly his highly imressive performance last year, winning two 4-star and three 6-star events proves that he has what it takes to be a serious contender in the Top 34. Hopefully now a successful end to Twenty Twelve will set him up ready to make a significant come back next year. And then who knows but perhaps 2013 could be a much luckier year for the kid from California!
Everything has quickly pointed in the right direction for Kolohe now he's back in the water!

From Trestles ... Words and photos: stu gaston
(with quotes from Surfline's guide to Trestles and T Street)
California is literally littered with iconic breaks. But of course the top spot of them all is Lowers. One of four peaks at Trestles, its Lowers which basks in worldwide fame. San Clemente though as the central hub of surfing in California has many great spots and the stretch northwards from Trestles to T Street is where you'll find a few so here's a closer look at these Hot Spots.

'Trestles is always crowded during summer, particularly at Lowers. And the rest of the breaks - Uppers, Cotton's, Church and everywhere in between - have their share of hungry waveriders. Still, it's possible to get your share of quality waves; the kind where you hit the lip a half dozen times and can ride and turn all the way in like a pro.' 51 -

Do grom's get an 'easy life' nowadays? No sooner have they put their first toe into the sea and stood up on a board, they have a board full of stickers and 'free stuf' piled high in their arms. The sun sets at the end of another day in San Clemente.
So there we go! Surphang Magazine has made it into double digits! And what a tantalising ten issues it's been! Now as long as this rogue planet rumour doesn't lead to the ancient Mayan's prophecy of our fast approaching apocolyptic end on the 21st December, then we will be back with the next issue, brimming full with even more fabulous photography and gripping gossip. But for now, simply go back and enjoy the photographic feast before you, remembering that all good things come in twos!
