'All's well that ends well!' Unbelievably, we're nearly at the end of another year! Even more unbelievable though is that we should have all met our apocolyptic end by now! Well if you're reading this, then hopefully our beautiful blue planet is sticking around to see another day. And in that case, before it does, let's look back at what wonders our beautiful blue planet has offered us in Twenty Twelve. Of course, one of the highlights was the Kustom Airstrike and so in this issue's 'The Pro Show' we get the lowdown on high flying surf star, Ryan Callinan. Also flying high is Nomme Mignot, top European grom who drops in for a 'Champ Chat' following his success. If perhaps you feel like flying high yourself, then we share our top surf spots for some 'Winter Getaways'. 'Fab Five' focuses on 'The 2012 Phenomena' while 'Hot Shots' profiles some Total Talent from Twenty Twelve. Finally, 'The Goss' meets some guys who might rather forget 2012 due to 'Injury Time'. Thankfully though, injuries heal and so 'all's well that ends well!' Enjoy the magazine then and we'll see you all again in 2013!

Welcome to

The Pro Show Callinan Blows Up! Words and photos: stu gaston

SM

Ryan Callinan is one of the best aerialists around.

It would be fair to say that Ryan Callinan became a name on every surfer's lips after he few onto our screens in Billabong's movie, 'Blow Up!' Since then, he's been doing crazy aerial manoeuvres on pretty much every big surf movie release and so it was no surprise to see him on the ranks of the Kustom Airstrike challenge this summer. But 2012 hasn't been all plain sailing for Ryan, especially as he sufered not one but two broken legs earlier in the year so when we caught up with him again this summer in France, we were keen to fnd out how things were going!

SM - 06

Unlike some other competition surfers, Ryan and indeed his fellow Billabong crew, Jack Freestone and Soli Bailey, were keen to be out freesurfng as much as possible between their heats. Ryan has juggled successful careers in both competitive and freesurfng but how does he balance the two and see them both developing? That’s a hard one for me. I've had a lot of success freesurfng, but I think you can do both. I really want to do both, I'd love to be on the 'CT, but I'd love to be in all the good movies and I think it's possible. Kolohe, Julian, Jordy and Dane, when he was on the 'CT, are all doing it so hopefully I can just do a bit of both.

07 -

SM

Ryan will blow out a huge range of airs on both his fore- and backhand.

09 -

SM

What blows up must also come down! A consistent Callinan landing!

Every freesurf, Ryan would usually have a videographer in tow as getting good clips for the movies is important to him. Just before hitting the European leg of the WQS events, Ryan's profle flm 'Bad Bad Not Good' came out and so was he happy with it? Yeah, it's really cool actually, it's more of a story movie but there's still a lot of surfng in it. It's more just about the injuries I've had and what I've gone through over the last year. I actually really like it, Jay Grant who flmed and edited it has done a really good job with the interviews and cutting it together and the layout so I'm pretty stoked at the way it came out.

SM - 10

Of course, just before Europe, Ryan was involved in the Kustom Airstrike.... Yeah, it was crazy good. Those guys are so consistent, doing the gnarliest airs. It's really wild 'cause it obviously pushes me and I wasn't 100% back yet so I was a bit scared and skeptical about going on it at the start. I thought it was just bound to happen again. I did do my knee, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. It was cool but, they’re really cool guys and really good surfers and good to surf with so it was a great trip.

SM

Ryan whacks out another from the aerial repertoire.

The Pro Show

13 -

SM

And whatever he whacks out always looks impressive.

SM - 14

Watching Ryan surf on a junky day in France, you can see how he's constantly pushing the boundaries of aerial antics. The Airstike was all about innovation but of course with that 50k cherry on top.... It was weird, the frst day or two I was just all about landing that one air. Like, I’ve just gotta keep going big and if I make one I could win. Like, if I try the biggest thing I can and don’t make it 50 times, even if I make it once I’ll win. But then, after the frst couple of days falling of, I was like, f**k this, I just wanna get some clips for the webisodes now! It was funny to see the diferent mindsets of everyone. I think most people were there for the money. I was just coming back from injury and I was kinda there to get some clips in the webisodes and get myself back out there, I guess. Get back in the water, back in the zone.

15 -

SM

Plenty of reasons to smile when you can bust airs like this all the time.

The Pro Show

SM - 16

The Pro Show Certainly, shooting with Ryan during the summer, it was clear to see that he was back in the zone! A couple of months later he was given a wildcard into the World Junior Championships in Bali and fnished with a respective 17th place. So one things for sure, Ryan Callinan is likely to be blowing up for a good few years to come!

17 -

One thing's for certain, Ryan Callinan's airs will never get stale!

Champ Chats NOMME NAILS IT! Words and photos: stu gaston

Back in September, Nomme Mignot rose above a talented feld of surfers to become Under 16 European Champion. Having watched Nomme's surfng build up to this achievement over the previous year, we felt it was time to nail him down and quiz him on what could be in store for this champ of the future!!

21 -

SM

Nomme Mignot manages to bust airs way beyond his years!

Nomme mignot Under 16 European Champion 2012

Two Thousand and Twelve has been a pretty epic year for you so far, and of course fnally becoming the Under 16 European Champion must be one of the highlights. But have there been any other memorable moments frst though? Yeah I'm very happy to have won the European Championships! Hopefully I will win the ASP one next year hahaha. But yeah this year has been great. I fnished 5th at the World Championships, and fnished over all 20th in the European ASP Under 21. Since then, I've been sponsored by Billabong which is really great to have their support! And the rest of the time I've just been having fun, especially now I'm back home in Mexico!

SM - 22

23 -

SM

Nomme nails an impressive fins free at his local spot in Lacanau.

CHAMP CHATS

Becoming the Under 16 European Champ has been one of your goals for a while. This year has seen you getting some great results and now this win. Talk us through the contest and how it went? Well I was really confdent the whole event as it was at Lacanau where I surfed all season long, but really what helped me win was my team and all their support.

SM - 24

CHAMP CHATS

You had to overcome some solid surfng from your European contenders? How do you rate your surfng peers over in Europe at the moment? Everyone's been surfng really well this year. Leo (Fioravanti), a good friend of mine, has been surfng really good! So I just had fun and surfed!

25 -

SM

Nomme Mignot mixes up both progressive and powerful surfing.

You've been surfng against and known these guys most of your competitive life – one of them was even your own cousin (Diego Mignot)! So how does this afect the way you surf in a heat? Not at all it dosen't afect me at all. I surf with him all year so it was just like if we were free surfng. Leo was also getting big scores so I simply had to make sure I got big scores too if i wanted to beat him and my cousin!

So during the contest, which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Yeah that would have been Leo or Diego haha

SM - 26

And now you're champion, does that go down as your best victory to date? Yeah my best, but its just the frst one – there will be more to come haha!

So now you've made it as champ, what's next? What are your goals for the rest of this year? This year, going back home to Mexico is one of my goals. For next year, to be World Champion in Under 16s, win King of the Groms and try and qualify for the ASP World Pro Junior Championships

And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I didn't train too much this year because I had a knee problem. What I do to push my surfng is just to have fun!

27 -

SM

And when it comes to barrels, Nomme's right in there, nailing those too!

CHAMP CHATS

SM - 28

CHAMP CHATS

Now you're from Mexico and you live in France for half of the year with some of the best waves that Europe has to ofer on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? I just want to stay at home! I think I've travelled enough this year!

Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? To be in the WCT and have won the US Open!

29 -

SM

Everything about Nomme and his surfing is pointing in the right direction!

Winter Getaways Words and photos: stu gaston

Winter's here once again. The swells have been rolling in off the Atlantic giving some excellent surfing conditions but the temperature has plummetted to a seasonal low already too! So why stick around in cold old Blighty when you could be having fun in the same Atlantic swells but somewhere else in the sun! With much of the UK surfing population already on a plane out of here, it's time to plan your own Winter Getaway and so here's a guide to our four favourite destinations!

31 -

SM

A warm welcoming wave in the middle of winter!

surphangaway

SM - 32

surphangaway Judging on Facebook statuses alone, everybody's pretty much here already – Lanzarote! So our first pick for the perfect place to get away from winter is certainly a popular choice amongst the board riding public and it's not hard to see why!

33 -

SM

Lanzarote

El Quemao at La Santa literally pumping!

SM - 34

Lanzarote Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands which can justly lay claim to being the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Prime season is winter, from November to late March, when waves commonly reach heights ranging from 1.5-4.5 m and hardly drop below head-high. The highly indented coastline on the NE, N and W coasts of the island offers a variety of breaks ranging in difficulty, so whether you're an experienced surfer or a beginner you can find your dream spot here.

35 -

SM

La Santa looking good!

surphangaway

SM - 36

surphangaway But it's La Santa itself that Lanzarote is famed for though the main peak, El Quemao is not for the faint hearted and can take down even the hardiest of pro surfers and has been known to do just that!

37 -

SM

Imagine paddling out with that as your view!

Lanzarote

SM - 38

Lanzarote Fortunately, Famara, further north on the island's west side, offers perfect surfing conditions for all abilities as it winds its way around to the classic spot San Juan, venue of the island's WQS event. So with plenty for everyone, including the sun, that's our getaway pick number one!

39 -

SM

Will Davey loving life in Lanzarote!

surphangaway

SM - 40

Portugal If a four hour flight to sun drenched surf is too long for some then half that and you can be here – Portugal, Europe's warmest country and renowned wave magnet! During winter the swell size is around the 6ft mark but can get to 15ft or more, making it a spot for those looking for some challenging surf!

41 -

SM

Supertubes living up to its name!

surphangaway

SM - 42

surphangaway The area around Peniche is a perfect place to start exploring what Portugal has to offer as the peninsular gives the opportunity to make the best of whatever the weather conditions may be – stormy then seek shelter at Baleal or if it's on then Supertubes is the place to be!

43 -

SM

One of the best waves in Europe? Certainly!

Portugal

SM - 44

Portugal 'Supertubos' of course means super tubes and it's called that for a reason with arguably the best barreling wave in Europe. Whether you chose to surf it or just see it, this is one part of Portugal every surfer would chose to be!

45 -

SM

Luis Eyre in a Supertubes green room!

surphangaway

surphangaway With 943 kilometres of coastline from North to South on it's western edge, Portugal is easy to explore when it comes to surfing and with waves everywhere, there's something for everyone...

47 -

SM

Point with a view – Ribeira D'Ilhas.

Portugal

SM - 48

Portugal Considered as one of the most hospitable countries in the world (true if you respect the locals at Coxos!), then it's easy to see why Portugal is our second pick for a quick winter trip! Go and see for yourself!

California Third on the list comes California. Not the cheapest of places to get to but well worth the extra dollar! If you're looking for the real surfing vibe then this place has it in bucket loads! Although cooler than the other two so far, it's way warmer than our winters.

51 -

SM

California Dreamin'! Strands near San Clemente. Photo: Jacob Fricks

surphangaway

SM - 52

surphangaway San Clemente is the centre of surfing life in Southern California. An hour south of Los Angeles, it's the ideal base with spots that will work on every swell direction going, such as Salt Creek that really comes to life when the North Westerly swells get going!

53 -

SM

Salt Creek cranking into action!

California

SM - 54

California Of course, the southernmost spot surfed at San Clemente is the world renowned Trestles. Whether you're reason to travel is to get in some serious surf training or simply to enjoy what surfing has to offer, then this is the break for you. With five peaks in all (Church, Middles, Lowers, Uppers and Cottons) there's a wave to suit everyone! Mind you, you'll literally find everyone on the wave, especially if it's good so be prepared to hassle!

55 -

SM

Trestles turning it on!

surphangaway

SM - 56

surphangaway That said, there are mellower times of the day and if you hit it right, Trestles can be a true delight. Indeed you can feel just like a pro as you effortlessly ride the wave back in to the shore, nailing a few good turns on the way.

57 -

SM

Lowers never lets you down!

California

SM - 58

California Or of course, you can choose to sit back, relax and watch the Pros themselves do their thing! Whichever way, California will certainly fulfill all your surfing dreams which is why it's our worthy getaway number three!

59 -

SM

Corey Colapinto punting at Trestles.

surphangaway

SM - 60

Ireland Finally for top pick number four, we've gone for a less obvious getaway choice though that depends on your reason for getting away. If you're after surf and sun then this certainly isn't for you, but if you're a big barrel rider...

61 -

SM

Perfect pumping Pampa. Photo: Christian McLeod

surphangaway

SM - 62

surphangaway

This is the time of year when the waves of Ireland really come into their own and any big wave rider will be checking the charts to see when they're going to be on fire!

22.10.12 This shot of Kolohe Andino at his local break of T Street in San Clemente was much more than just a highlight of the year. It could too be a historic moment as we see him take to the air for one of the last time's under Nike's helm before he was moved to Hurley.

Two Thousand and Twelve has been full of a staggering number of phenomena. So what are phenomena? Well put simply, observable occurences! Everyday we open our eyes and are bound to see some amazing sights. We then commit those sights to memory. But some of us are lucky enough to be able to capture those moments forever, thanks to the power of the camera. Twenty Twelve's ToTal Talent Words and most photos: stu gaston

Twenty Twelve will be remembered as a year when sporting achievement was pushed to the limits. The surfng world has echoed this accolade with some amazing feats achieved this year, not least Joel Parkinson displacing an eleven times World Champion to secure his maiden ASP World Champion title. Everyone who is anyone is constantly striving to be at the top of the game. So for our eleventh issue, we've chosen to profle six up coming surfers who exude total surfng talent and will be ones to watch for titles in the future!

Hot Shots What got you into surfng? My mother would make me stop playing playstation and send me of to the beach at the age 8. When and how did you become sponsored? At the age 11 all my training group got a sponsor but at the end of the year just a few of us kept that sponsor… I kept it, so it started then. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? I think now is the time I’m most proud of and the time I’m surfng best. I'm trying to see if I can make a living out of this… just that possibility makes me proud because this is what I love. Who in surfng inspires you most? I like a lot of aspects from a lot of diferent surfers, not sure who inspires me the most… maybe Glenn Hall because of his strong will. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I love free surfng but I don’t think it’s challenging enough; competitive surfng is always a challenge.

SM - 122

Joao Kopke What song motivates you before a surf? Ocean by John Butler When and where was your best surf session? I don’t remember my best session of all times but I had a crazy one at Reef, Ericeira, the other day. That wave has the most freakish barrels… What's the worst wipeout of your life? I think it was when I was 11 and I tried going on an 8 ft wave. I went over the falls and came up screaming and wanting more… I had no clue of what I was doing in there.

What do you do when you don't surf? I've played the double bass since I'm 11 and it’s the best thing to do when there’s no surf. Or I just hang out with my friends. Do you train as well as surf? Yes I’ve been training with Surftechnique, a Portuguese group of training, for a long time now.

And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? Ping-Pong I think, I’d probably be really fat.

Joao Kopke If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? I’d buy unlimited waves, and houses in front of them for me, my family and my friends. I would bring the WT there and give a wildcard for myself. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? I'm in the USA and they only eat fast food over here, I miss my mummy! What's your most overused word? Puto, it’s like kid in Portuguese but we say it even to older people, it’s kind of weird. What's your goal for the next year? Qualify for the World Pro Junior championship. But I want to have fun while doing it. And what about the future? I prefer not to think about it, as I said, I really want to be a pro surfer, within that I think it’s best not to think. Besides I can quit surfng and become a pro ping pong player at any time!

Injury Time Words and photos: stu gaston

Certainly Twenty Twelve has been a year when sporting achievement has been pushed to the absolute limits. But sometimes in achieving the bounds of your abilities, a push too far can break those limits. Like never before, this year seems to have seen record numbers of surfers being injured through simply striving to constantly better themselves at what they do best. Take World Tour rookie Kolohe Andino for example who injured himself half way through his maiden year simply by misjudging a landing of his trademark air and coming a cropper in the fats with a broken ankle. He's now back in business and seems more determined than ever, recently securing himself a place in the Top 34 for 2013! However, the months out of the water can be a long road to recovery and the old 'bumpy road' clichĂŠ isn't far from the truth! We caught up with two Surphang stalwarts who've both been on injury time this year and asked them to fll us in on what their time out the water has really been like.

Alex Kerry always keen to get in even simply for some fun in the small summer surf.

The Goss So describe for us when and how your injury happened? It happened nearly 4 months ago now in the early stages of September. I could feel my knee getting weak but thought nothing of it. It all happened just doing a simple reverse but my knee twisted underneath me. And what is the official diagnosis? Torn MCl and tendon damage So how long have you been out the water now? And when do you expect to be surfng again? I have been out the water now for about 4 months, longer than I thought it was going to be thats for sure, as i thought it was only some kind of sprain at the time. How wrong I was haha. I wont be surfng till I go away which is in just over 2 weeks so not long to wait now. Excited is an understatement!

SM - 136

Alex Kerry You spent the whole of summer, when the waves were small, working hard and training. So it must have been a bit of a blow injuring yourself just as the epic autumn swells were about to hit. How did you deal with this? Yeah it was so fustrating at frst as I was feeling good at the time it happened, but I soon forgot about it and kept my head high thinking about when I was going to be better. What did you end up doing with all your spare time then? For the frst month or so I just rested it as I thought it was nothing major, but nothing was getting better so I organised an MRI scan and started to see a physiotherapist (Sean Clement) once a week which is still on going but I can see the end of the dark tunnel now.

Kezza coming in, wondering if he should still be out there...

The Goss

And what are you doing now to be ready to hit the water hard again? Been going to the gym for the last few months training to build it back up to prevent it happening again. Once your surfng again, what are your plans for the next year? I'm heading to Costa Rica at the begining of January for two months to train and make up for the time I have missed out on this winter here. Should be a good start to the new year!! And fnally, any big plans for the future? Got no major plans for the future, just take it as it comes. Just focus on getting regular shots and keeping my website up to date. Also would just like to say a big thank you to my sponsors who have supplied me with gear in this tough time! Obsessive Disorder, Globe Footware and Fourth Surfboards! Lewis Leadbetter was flying high at the start of the year.

The Goss So describe for us when and how your injury happened? It happened back in March. Basically I just did an air reverse to the fats and my back foot missed the board and I landed on my knee and it just broke. And what was the official diagnosis? Torn meniscus and my cartilage was all destroyed. So how long were you out the water then? Well I was operated on 2 weeks after the injury and was non weight bearing for 2 months then I had to learn to walk again.

SM - 140

Lewis Leadbetter

And when did you properly get back surfng? I think it was August when I frst surfed again but I hurt alot so I didn't surf again until a few weeks later. Then I started to surf again but I had a diferent injury every week and it was just a joke. I was stretching everyday and warming up but it wasnt until I went to California at the end of September that the injuries stopped and I could actually get a full week of surfng in. That was the week Stu came over to shoot which worked out pretty well!

Lewis Leadbetter You spent the whole of winter working hard and training, ready for a busy summer contest season. So it must have been a bit of a blow injuring yourself just as the frst Pro Junior was about to get underway. How did you deal with this? Yeah it really sucked. I was injured a few weeks before the frst contest of the year, also I needed to do one more National competition to make the National fnal but I was injured for too long and missed it so it wasn't a good year except from California these past two months.

What did you end up doing with all your spare time then? Well I sat and watched TV and slept for about 2-3 months and also went to rehab every day. When I could walk again, it was summer and I still couldnt surf or train my leg much so I partied and carried on my rehab aswell.

143 -

SM

Eight months later and Lewis is flying once again.

The Goss And what did you do to be ready to hit the water? Well I started to train it lightly after I had fnished all my rehab and when I surfed the frst time it hurt a lot so I skated a bit on the long board. At frst I was pretty scared to punt an air so I went to the skate ramps and that helped me so much because when I stood on it for the frst time I was really scared even to do an ollie but by the end of the day I was skating like normal and doing fips. That gave me loads of confdence in the water. Once you were surfng again, you booked yourself a three month trip to California! So what was your thinking behind that then? Just to get my surfng back to normal and see how good California was because there's so many Pro surfers that have moved out there to live so I just wanted to see what it was all about. But i think the Canary Islands is the place for me, it's the best place to live in the world...(even though Mentawaiis have much better waves haha)

As you're now getting back on form, what are your plans for the next year? Oh I really don't know yet! I'm going to see how I do in the frst Pro Junior in Gran Canaria and take it from there so dont really have plans yet! And fnally, any big plans for the future? Just enjoying life!
