'It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life... and we're feeling good!'

There's something quite magical about the dawn of a new day, the way darkness turns to a glowing light. Perhaps it's being part of that magic that draws every surfer to venture out for that iconic dawnie session. And that same magical feeling fills us all at the start of a new year with the thrill of what lies in store. But what makes it so magical? Is it that we're back at the beginning with a clean canvas waiting for its painting like an empty break of perfect waves just waiting to be ridden? That's probably a good part of it!

Well whatever it is, we're certainly feeling good here at SURPHANG and so have got another great issue just waiting to be read! We take you back to where surfing began by catching up with three Hawaiian surfers; we chat to a champ buzzing with the thrill of new challenges lieing ahead this year; we look back on five fab years of photograpy but with an eye to the future; and we share the work of an upcoming water photographer who's got a bright future ahead of him. After all that, we hope you'll be feeling good too!

SM Dylan Goodale's always going for it with his expert aerial repertoire.

Kauai’s North Shore is known for producing some of the best surfers in the world and Dylan Goodale plans on being no diferent. In 2010 he won the ASP Vans Pier Classic 4-star event in Huntington Beach followed up by a quarterfnal appearance in 2011. Dylan fnished that year strong in his fnal season in the Hawaiian Pro Junior series and so joined the big boys on the WQS last year on a good footing. Best known for his strong aerial repertoire and competitive prowess, Goodale is still transitioning from being the light-footed junior Hawaiian into another World Tour hopeful and with a fresh year of contests ahead will no doubt be going for it even harder in 2013. We caught up with him towards the end of the Twenty Twelve season in California just before he was due to head home to Hawaii to see what the future might hold in store.

Now you're from Kauai, so how has that shaped your surfng?

Coming from Kauai has helped my surfng a lot, because there are a bunch of older guys who are still around there that will push you. But I’m kind of like an unconventional Hawaiian surfer, because I like do airs, and do contests, and surf smaller waves, and stuf. And I’ve never really got a good wave at Pipe.

So, it kind of throws some people of, like if you didn’t know I was from Kauai, you’d never even think it.

The Pro Show Now we can see you've got a great aerial repertoire but is surfng bigger Pipe more often something you see in your future?

Yeah, I’m defnitely going to get out there and do it. But as of right now, I haven’t got a good one yet.

So soon to take on your second year in the Star and Prime events, when do you see yourself qualifying for the tour?

I think it all depends on the year you have. I’m not saying I’m Brother [Kolohe Andino], but he qualifed in one year, just by how he won, what, like three 6-stars in a row? And then, there’s the people who try for six years and fnally make it.

So I think it all just depends on the year you have.

The Pro Show So apart from training, what have you been doing to help get to that next level?

Well to be honest even just watching and hanging out a lot with guys like Brother, Luke [Davis], and Evan [Geiselman] has helped me loads. I like watching their approaches, as well as hearing what they do, because they all have really diferent approaches to waves and to the contest vibe.

With some surfers opting for a career in freesurfng, could you ever see yourself going down that path?

I love freesurfng, and I love going on trips and getting good waves with your friends, but I’m like insanely competitive. I hate losing anything. I can’t handle it. So I don’t think I could ever not do contests, because I still have that competitive part of me, which is what keeps me alive.

Dylan Goodale is obviously driven to succeed in professional surfng and it won’t be long before he is a household name, much like his fellow Kauains that preceded him. With his eyes set on qualifying for the CT in the not so distant future, Dylan’s zest for life and success as a surfer will keep him in the game and going for it for a while yet!

Champ Chats Schulz's Schralpin!

Back in 2011 at the WSA West Coast Championships, Kevin Schulz not only clinched the win and the season champion title in Boys U16, he also was the recipient of the Midget Smith Memorial Sportsmanship Award for his conduct throughout the season and especially the West Coast Championships. It was here that USA Surf Team Coach and “Bustin’ Down the Door” legend, Ian Cairns, swung by to impart some helpful competition tips and information on the clear path from WSA to Surfng America Prime to Surfng America USA Championships to a slot on the PacSun USA Surf Team and a professional career if desired. Kevin obviously listened well as a year later he won his frst Surfng America Prime in Under 18s and was shortly after ofered a place on the PacSun USA Junior Surf team. We caught up with Kevin in California twice last year to ask him more about his success so far!

CHAMP CHATS The past two years have been pretty epic for you – becoming WSA West Coast Champion in 2011, and of course fnally making it onto the PacSun USA Surf Team in 2012 must be just two of the major highlights.

But have there been any other memorable moments frst though?

Yeah I won a few contests here and there so I was super stoked on that.

The past two years have seen you getting some great results and and some notable wins. So talk us through your contest seasons and how it all went?

I have just been on the grind for the NSSA and Surfng America. I've been getting some decent results there so I'm stoked!

And having been champion in 2011, does the win at the Surfng America Prime last April go down as your best victory to date?

Well even though I didn't win the whole season in 2012, just that last event in April, that was a huge win for me and I think that defnitely boosted my confdence in contests.

Becoming a member of the PacSun USA Surf Team has been one of your goals for a while. How did it all come about then and how did you feel when you actually made it onto the team?

I couldn't believe it when I made it. I've been working super hard this past year and it really paid of for me! I couldn't be more happy!

You've now become part of a formidable team of surfers! How do you rate your surfng peers over in the US at the moment?

All the boys absolutely rip, they are the best in the nation so to be a part of that is huge for me.

You've been surfng against and known these guys most of your competitive life! So how does this afect the way you surf in a heat against them?

Surfng heats with the boys is super fun, we all take it seriously but have fun with it at the same time.

And which of them would you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why?

Taylor Clark, I think Taylor is the best surfer under 18 in the nation. The kid is unstoppable so it's always a bit frighteneing pulling him in a heat.

So now you've made it on the team what's next? What are your goals for the coming year?

I would love to make the travel team for the US team. I think this year is in Nicaragua and there are some really sick waves down there.

And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng?

I train at a place called DEAN SPORTS CONSULTANTS. Kevyn is the best trainer in the nation in my opinion and working there has defnately improved my surfng.

Now you're from California with some of the best waves that the US has to ofer on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling?

I'd love to go to Indo, the waves there are so good, so hopefully I'll get over there in the next year or so.

Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time?

In fve to ten years I'd love to be competing on the CT level. Thats my dream so hopefully I can get there!

It's all very well looking back on the past and what a great time you've had and after all what other purpose does photography have than to capture those amazing moments for ever, but it's the future that we all live for! The future that not one of us can predict and so is entirely up in the air giving a similar thrill seeking feel to what might be coming our way next. So he'll be grabbing every opportunity to make the most of 2013 and get his surfing back on track and we'll be heading back to Tenerife soon to see just how he's getting on!

10.10.10 Back in October 2010, Alex Baker had just won the biggest prize money purse in UK Pro Junior surfing to that point when he claimed the Oakley XPY Pro Junior. A year later and he decided that competitive surfing in the UK wasn't for him and headed off down under to Noosa Heads in Australia.

What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far?

I had a QS event at Sunset Beach where I was pulling into 10ft barrels that you could ft a bus into. The memory fashes in my head every once in a while. I didn't win or anything, but it will be one of my best memories for a long time to come.

15 foot Pipe. John John helped me get a bomb and pulled into one of my biggest barrel to date, and was super happy that whole week about it.

INSANE!!! The level is higher than it's ever been I think.

Do you train as well as surf?

I have a training routine I have been using for many years. I'm not sure my routine would work for others. Everyone has certain things they do that work for what they need.

Now you're already from Hawaii and you live for half the year in California with some top quality waves like Lower Trestles right on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling?

I spent a third of 2012 in other countries outside the USA. Travelling can be the best and worst part of what I do so I'm just enjoying be back at home in Hawaii at the moment.

Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time?

I don't want to jinx the future with simple assumptions, but I hope to be one of the best at what I do.

Kaoli Kahokuloa Originating from Molokai, Kaoli Kahokuloa is another young Hawaiian surfer already making his mark in the surfng world. Still only 16 years old, his surfng took him to a joint eleventh place in last year's ISA World Junior Surfng Championships so it's no surprise that he's back on the Hawaiian Junior Surf team this year, keen to follow in Kalani's success last year and bring home the Under 18 title for himself this time around!

Kaoli Kahokuloa Like many up and coming surfers, Kaoli craves those perfect air sections and so you're much more likely to fnd him busting full rotation frontside 360s on the North Shore than you are to see him charging barrels.

And like many other young Hawaiian surfers, he spent last summer over in California so that he could perfect the aerial repertoire for which he is becoming increasingly known.

Kaoli Kahokuloa Here, in the epicentre of modern surfng culture, Kaoli was able to show his surfng prowess through competition success and through many internet videos of his gravity defying aerials, both of which earnt him international recognition but more importantly in this modern world, sponsors!

Hot Shots But for Kaoli, his surfng ability isn't just about winning contests. Surfng is much more an outlet to express and share the Hawaiian values for both Kaoli and his family.

As his father states, 'We want to do it the old style way. Always stay humble, no matter what the result, and always come out smiling.' And so what does Kaoli himself aspire to: 'To simply enjoy surfng, everywhere around the world.'

So the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour came to an exciting climax with Australian Joel Parkinson clinching the 2012 ASP World Title. But it was a pretty exhilarating year all round especially with the much talked about rookies rising up to the game. John John fnished fourth which was a massive achievement in itself and Medina made a signifcant mark taking a more than respectable seventh place.

Kolohe of course sufered a mid year injury which really ruled him out of any top ten placing but he made a convincing come back at the end of the season and so has maintained his spot in the Top 34 for the 2013 tour that gets underway at the start of March on the Gold Coast at Snapper! So those three now become 'old hands' with a new bunch of surfers moving up to the elite level of world surfng including two who we think will be ones to watch out for when the new season begins.

This year , Glenn Hall will be supplementing a strong 'Euro Force' on the Men's WCT after surfng his strongest season ever on the Star Tour. Originating from Australia, the Bundoran local opened his account with a win in the frstever Star event in China last January, before moving into serious business with a runner-up fnish in the ASP Prime Nike Lowers Pro in May. Two months later 'Micro' struck back and won his frst major event, the ASP Prime Mr Price Pro in Ballito, South-Africa. With a few more solid results last summer, a 5th in Newquay, 3rd in Lacanau and fnally a 17th at Sunset last month, Hall fnally could let everything go and enjoy his maiden qualifcation for the Men's Elite Tour.

"2012 was an amazing year for me and fnally to reach a goal that I had been working towards for so long is a great feeling." Hall said. "Ever since Ballito everyone was saying 'you're qualifed' and I don't believe it at all. So it was hard to listen to everyone say it all year and try to keep my head down and not take the foot of the gas.

I didn't go as well in Hawaii as I hoped but the fnal result of qualifying was a dream come true.

I'm looking forward to celebrating with my family and Friends for a few nights then knuckling down and training for 2013."

Filip e To le d o Meanwhile, Filipe Toledo will be bolstering a Brazilian presence on the World Tour in 2013.

He similarly had an amazing season in 2012 with his frst ever Star event win at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in August before backing this up with a runner up position in the Coastal Edge East Coast Surf Championships at Virginia Beach.

Toledo stated after his win in Lacanau. “This is my best result so far for sure, I don’t have words to describe how I feel it’s just amazing, unbelievable!

Next Issue

Well that's the first issue of the new year all done and dusted. In fact it's the beginning of the end, you might say! But no, don't panic, by end we simply mean the end of our first year of the magazine! So next issue, it's time to celebrate SURPHANG's first anniversary!
