'Going the distance!' It doesn't matter what you do in life, if you're going to do it well then you have to put in a decent amount of effort. But if you want to do it better than those around you then you have to put in even more effort than that! And however hard that effort might become you just have to keep on trying, you just have to go the distance!
So this issue is full of surfers who are doing just that – going the distance! From surfers travelling the length of the land to surf that perfect southern secret spot to surfers journeying the entire globe simply to seek out the best waves on offer in any given season, all of them are putting in that extra bit of effort to ensure they're pushing their own surfing to the limits! And hopefully as you now go on and see what they've all achieved, it might inspire us all to get amongst it, get out there and get shredding too!

SM Connor O'Leary kicks out his tail mid backhand air reverse at Lacanau.
When Connor O'Leary came to Europe for the ASP QS events last summer, he certainly turned a few heads with his surfng skills what with having just won his frst ASP event in Korea. Since then he's gone on to become the Australian NSW State Open Champion and entered the top 60 of the world rankings. So we caught up with Connor to fnd out more.

The Pro Show What got you into surfng? My parents both surfed and mum was a professional Japanese surfer back in the day, so they influenced me alot. When and how did you become sponsored? I got an ofer of Quiksilver when i was about 12. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Probably representing Australia in the 2011 ISA World Juniors in Peru was an awesome opportunity; also recently winning my frst WQS event in Korea. Who in surfng inspires you most? I don't really have an inspiring surfer, but Glen Hall has inspired me alot this year because he's kept going at it and at it on the WQS for some time now and fnally being in a solid spot in the rankings has cracked it to to be able to qualify onto the World Tour this year. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I always love freesurfng and expressing myself and getting footage, but I've always loved competing, so I guess I like to mix it around. What song motivates you before a surf? Any song with a fast pace and good beat, songs of surf movies that get you psyched to go surfng.
09 -
SM Connor keeps his surfing pointing in the right direction.
SM - 10
When and where was your best surf session? I can't really tell you where was my best surf session because I can't really remember but I recently went to Bali before I came to Europe and got some amazing waves, surfed the left point at Canguu 5ft clean with the most perfect barrels with noone out! I was cheering!! What's the worst wipeout of your life? A few years ago I surfed Margaret River when I was 16 for the Aussie titles and it was huge, 8-10ft, and I ended up getting a 10ft clean on the head! Was the scariest moment of my life! And getting caught inside on a big one out Sunset last year!

The Pro Show What do you do when you don't surf? I usually go for a cruise around on the skate board, go and train if I am keen enough, maybe go hit some golf balls at the driving range. Do you train as well as surf? Yes I train 3 times a week, just to keep my ftness levels up and to get some more muscles in my legs, and to increase my core strength.
13 -
SM Connor kicks out a clean fan of spray.
SM - 14
And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? If I didn't surf, I would probably keep playing soccer. I stopped playing soccer when I was 14 because I was always away for surfng competitions so I never got to play. If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? I would buy mulitple houses around the best surf spots in Australia and the world, and a car that can ft surfboards easily in, haha What's the healthiest thing you ate today? I had eggs and fresh orange juice. What's your most overused word? Most overused word probably 'yeah'.

The Pro Show What's your goal for the next year? Goal for next year is to hopefully make the top 50, or at least get a better seed for the year after. And what about the future? In fve to ten years time I hope to see myself either in a solid spot for making the World Tour, or even just making a career in surfng if that doesn't work out, but still having a good ranking in the world rankings.

Gonzalez Goes green! Words: stu gaston Photos: Chris Hartl
Noah Gonzalez isn't your average 15 year old. He simply lives for one thing – getting barrelled! So Noah spends a good amount of his days fnding the perfect green room and where better to do this than the island of Fuerteventura. Here he can perfect his tube riding style, a skill which he then brings nicely into his competitive surfng, most recently having been the Under 14 German Champion in 2011. So now two years later, we caught up for a chat about what he's got in store next.
19 -
SM Noah Gonzalez loves getting in the green room!
SM - 20
So Noah, it could be said you’re living the dream! But how did you come to be living in Fuerteventura? I was lucky and I was born on this great island - my father is from Asturias in Northern Spain and my mum is German and she literally landed here, because she was working as a flight attendant back then. So I am half German and half Spanish - a good mixture. So what’s the surf scene like in Fuerteventura then? The surf scene in Fuerteventura is very multi cultural we have very good locals and lots of tourists also in the spots, but it's not localised at all and we all surf together with a lot of fun. Of course we all know each other and I often surf with my two friends Colby and Ayko and my Italian coach and friend Alessandro.

CHAMP CHATS
And how then did you actually get into surfng? I started surfng in the summer 2006 when I was 8 years old with the Surf School Las Olitas. They ofered a summer course from the Sports council and my mum booked my sister and me on it. I loved it so much that I did not want to sail anymore though my dad and my sailing coach were not very amused about this fact! But I was so stoked with surfng that from this point I was only thinking about surfng, surfng, surfng!

SM Noah taking the drop into some more tube time!
CHAMP CHATS
And of course you were the Under 14 German Champion a year back. Talk us through that contest and how you came to win it? Yes, I actually won the Under 14 German Champs back in October 2011! In 2010 I became the runner-up and in 2011 I won the contest because the waves in Mimizan, France were perfect for me! In the semi fnals and in the fnal the waves were big and strong and this was great for me. Last year I did not participate, because I was in Panama in the ISA World Junior Championships and in France for the Euro Juniors, so I could not miss more school classes and therefore I could not go again to France for the German Champs 2012.
SM - 26
CHAMP CHATS
You have to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders to win a national title. How do you rate your surfng peers over in the Canaries and the rest of Europe at the moment? The surfng level - especially in Spain, France and Portugal is very, very high. Also on the Canary Islands we have lots of boys who really have a great surfng style and who have a lot of talent. My surfng is ok, but for sure there are boys who have more talent than I have. On Fuerteventura I am among the best fve Under 16 boys of the island I would say. Now you've achieved your frst title then, what's next? What are your goals for 2013? My main goal for 2013 is to become the German Champ in the Under 16 division. I also have a new board sponsor from Germany - Buster Surfboards so I will try to do as many contests as possible on the Canary Islands and the German Champs in France this year.
27 -

CHAMP CHATS
And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I have surf training with Alessandro from Wolfhouse Corralejo together with my friends Colby and Ayko twice a week, but of course we surf every day if the waves are good. Those days without waves we keep ft in the Papagayo Gym in Corralejo with our ftness coach Pedro or I just do some running which I like too. Now, you're already living the dream in Fuerteventura but what's your idea of a perfect trip then? Where would you want to go? My perfect trip would be somewhere in the world where I could fnd rights and tubes! And not too many people! Next year I plan to go with some friends to Indonesia....I am looking forward to this trip! Finally, where do you see your surfng being in fve to ten years time then? In 5 to 10 years I will be surfng around the world for fun and travelling as much as I can besides my studies!

Hot Spots In this ever more digitalised world, the age old notion of simply setting off on a road trip and coming across some epic secret spot with nobody else out leaving perfect peaks all to yourself seems almost inconceivable. Nowadays it's all Google this or Instagram that meaning any epic wave found is all over the web in seconds! So in this issue we pay homage to the secret hot spots around the world as Chris Hartl and her surfing son Noah Gonzalez go in search of secret spots in the south of the island of Fuerteventura.
Punta de Jandia, the perfect semi secret hot spot!

Hot Spots
First of all, before going any further, it's important to point out that this is not about to reveal the whereabouts of every secret spot in the south of Fuerteventura! Not at all! The main spot in the south of the island is actually called 'Secretos' though simply because it is an area thriving in many breaks unknown to the masses and is a haven for the locals where they can surf those perfect barreling peaks all to themselves!

Surfng is ultimately all about a harmonious existence between water and wind that forms into swell and thus creates waves. Mix in a talented surfer and the package is complete. Or is it? There's a lot more to the human side of surfng than just the guy who rides the board. After all the other guy who made that board is pretty crucial too! Plus if we're to share in this harmonious existence then the guy in the water capturing it on camera also has a role to play! So we decided it was time to readdress that balance which means taking a look into the world of a shaper and a shooter as well as a shredder in this issue's special “Hot Shots' feature.

SM - 98
Shaper Taz Yassin
What got you into surfng? Always loved being at the beach and playing around the shorebfeak with my boogy board, so it was just a natural progression When and how did you become interested in shaping boards? I had always been good at working with my hands. And then this one year, I perforated my eardrum on a wipeout surfng the spanish left.. And I was left out of the water for 6 months so I just started shaping to keep my mind occupied and basically just progressed from there... What moment are you most proud of in your shaping career so far? Placing in the top 3 shapers at the Californian "Icons of Foam'' tribute shape-of against some of the best shapers of my time... Pat Rawson, Jhon Pyzel, Wayne Rich, Reno Abellira...

Surfers travel the globe to surf diferent spots. What diferent spots have you visited to shape with famous shapers? I've spent my fair amount of time in famous spots shaping all over the world from Snapper Rocks, Kirra-Point and many other during my stay in Oz... Trestles and T-Street in Cali... And various around Europe like Zarautz and Mundaka...
SM - 100

You spent 3 months in California recently so tell us more about how that came about and the experience you gained as a shaper. Well I posted this video of me shaping on Youtube when I was 15 and the director of the Boardroom International Surfboard Show saw it and invited me to the comp along with six world class shapers like Rawson, Reno, Pyzel... And after placing in the top 3 of that comp I got ofered the chance to Work for Mayhem at Lost surfboards and also became close friends and worked for Tim Patterson! I ended up staying for about 3 months. 101 -

Who in shaping inspires you most? My biggest influences in shaping are Mayhem and Tim Patterson. What do you prefer, surfng or shaping boards and why? Surfng when it's good and shaping when it's bad. That way I waste no time haha What song motivates you whilst your shaping? James Arthur's competition tracks! When and where would you say you've shaped your best board so far? Talk us through it. The thing is that a "best board" is a subjective term... Depending on the type of surfer looking at it... But I'd have to say that my most positively recognized batch of shapes were made in California last year.
SM - 102
Shaper Taz Yassin
What do you do when you aren't shaping boards or surfng? Work on my computer designs and party haha... Surfng and shaping basically occupies 95% of my life. But with my increasing demand for my boards, my time spent behind a computer screen working on my fles is growing at a considerable rate. And whenever I'm back home, there's always a little time for some epic parties! If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? My own factory in Cali, a house near Salt Creek and a jet to fly me back to Tenerife all the time. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? A salad! What's your most overused word? Sick! What's your goal for the next year? To get my label working at a constant rate on a National level! And what about the future? Where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? In fve years I hope to see my self as a noticeable shaping force in Europe... Shooter Jacob Fricks You spent some time in Hawaii recently so tell us more about how that came about and the experience you gained as a photographer? Hawaii is amazing! The water is so blue and just feels like there is so many places to shoot. It really just inspired me to keep on going and looking for new perspectives. Who in surf photography inspires you most? Clark Little! Every time I see one of his photos I'm always amazed! What do you prefer, surfng or shooting surf and why? Shooting surf... Cause I suck at surfng! What song motivates you whilst your shooting? Hard to listen to music in the water but if I could it would be Sail by AWOLNATION. Love that song! When and where would you say you've snapped your best shot so far? Talk us through it. I think probably at Salt Creek which is about 2 miles from my house. I got up at 6am and went down there and waited for the sunrise. It was freeing cold like low 40’s which is cold for California. Finally the sun was just coming up over the Ritz Carlton and the waves where so glassy and perfect. It’s a time where there was only couple people out and I could stand in one spot and just wait for the waves to come to me. This shot wasn’t the biggest wave of the day but defantly my favourite.

Jayce Robinson
Jayce Robinson is current UK Pro Surf Tour Open Champion and so a hot contender on the European circuit. He began his 2012 season in stunning form with some successful early results so if he can maintain that momentum throughout 2013 then our man from St Ives could be in for a good year!

But that's not Luis's only advantage – he's been a UK Pro Junior Champion and already ranked in the Top 10 European Pro Juniors, not to mention the fact that he's almost always made it to the fnal of every contest that he enters! All that adds up to some serious Euro-vision potential for 2013!

Stuart Campbell
Stu Campbell has been a very successful British surfer for all of his surfng career. Picked up early as a grom by main sponsor O'Neill, Stu has been a UK Pro Junior Champion and more recently a British Open Champion so he pretty much has the UK surf contest scene all sewn up!

Stuart Campbell
Stu now spends a considerable amount of his year travelling to seek out some of the best surf across the globe with Costa Rica being a current favourite and so he will be hoping to transfer this thirst for waves abroad into some serious hunger for success when he returns to the European contest circuit for this year's season!

Next Issue Where does the time go? Now a year since we were bringing you shots back from our first Transatlantic trip to California and the talent that breeds along those shores, we decided, inspired by the stunning shots of far flung places popping up in our inbox, that it was time for another globe trotting trip seeking out tomorrow's hot surfing talent! So having been west, this time we headed east, a long way east and jetted half way round the world to none other than Australia where surfing isn't just a sport, it's very much a lifestyle! It's not really surprising then that many of the Hot 100 surfers of the junior ranks hail from this sun drenched, surf rich paradise. And of course we managed to catch up with many of them on our travels. So be prepared for the next issue full of talent from down under!
